As he's wrapping up for the evening, he spots a Gardevoir in the distance. Although an exceptional find for the Black Market, it's not something he has any personal interest in, and so he stays the course of heading home. Packing away his things neatly, Adrian releases another of his Corviknights and begins the return journey home.

How much more would they alienate him from his ethics? He was still struggling to acclimate to the idea of sacrificing pokemon, no matter what sort of propaganda they hit him with, and Adrian was much more adverse to confronting people—especially innocents. Although his affiliation had earned him some opportunities that may not have otherwise been afforded him, Adrian still yet fostered reservations about his decision to enlist to Rocket...[break][break]

From disinterested to exasperated, Adrian's expression said it all—but Mars was not forthcoming. Drumming his fingers impatiently, he quietly wondered, 'Why won't he just get on with it?' An answer manifested itself when they finally broke their silence. "Eugh... So what if it did...?"[break][break]

Adrian fished his phone from its pocket, finangling with the passkey before swiping around for the Unown Report. Flicking down along the list for the myriad entries, he doesn't spot it at first. It's just a wall of words he needs a dictionary to understand, same as ever. ...But then a name, scrunched together so as to not contain any spaces.[break][break]

Eyelids squint, heavy with skepticism, and he reasonably doubts the authenticity of this entry. He dials back up the list and refreshes it, starting from the top, noticing his name listed among the Alpha directory. It boded ill.[break][break]

"As if I needed the reminder I'm being targeted by those unown chumps... Those nutless punks better hope I can't figure out how to wrangle my own Unown one of these days," he spat the words full of vitriol before turning his attention back to Martin. "This isn't a prank, right? 'Cause... well, how'd you know it updated?"

When the last of the dirt caking the stone's surface falls away, he discovers a question in the engraving, which is in and of itself quite peculiar: 'To whom are you thankful?'[break][break]

I should really be used to this whack-o kind of crap by now, Adrian thinks to himself in exasperation.[break][break]

But playing along was the name of the game. Seating himself upon a nearby boulder while bluegrass and prairie dropseed flourished along the forest floor, he takes a moment to meditate on an answer. Already he could consider naming Howitzer, with whom he was recently reunited. And then there was the one responsible... Father Winter. The man had abandoned him to a strange world, fodder for the pursuant assassins hunting him since the Star Soiree. I should really look into that more, his mind interjects while dismissing this villain as one who might receive his thanks. But to be truthful, the gamble had been worth its stakes; it's not like he wasn't thankful.[break][break]

But in this, perhaps the feeling should be pure, no?[break][break]

Adrian carves the name without much more consideration. Someone he was thankful for being there, who could stand on their own but knew when to stand with him... Who had within them a passion for pokemon to match his own, and a readiness to explore new places and activities on a whim...[break][break]

Someone who had waited on him through thick and thin, and exhausted themselves in seeing to his needs and wants... Not to mention they gave incredibly good—Ahem[break][break]

As he lays the flat of his palm against the coarse texture of the tablet, he cannot help but make note of its contrast to the smooth complexion and delicate touch of a certain someone's hand intertwined with his own.[break][break]

Ironically, 'thankful' didn't scratch the surface of his feelings for them, but it served his purpose well enough.

The Inkay approaches him, turning itself right-side-down while eyeing him down-and-up, paying no regard to the notion of personal space. So of course he returned the favor, shoving a palm in its face and forcing it aside as he cleared the way. ~~Deja vu or something like that...~~

The League cautioned those that were determined to make the jaunt to the summit for the distortion that had appeared: But he would not be deterred. The mountain belonged to him just as well, though firstly to those as were entombed here, and that thing which lay dormant beneath its peak—sequestered in that limbo between planes.[break][break]

Howitzer at his side, Adrian felt invincible—which was ironic—but that made little difference to the infectious moxie overtaking him. Scaling the mountain in his own time, they eventually crossed the threshold of the distortion, and within it encountered their first obstacle: An Electrode that looked more agitated than usual, with the semblance of an apricot. Okay... It burned like one, too.[break][break]

This he discovered after siccing Howitzer after it. Oops.[break][break]

En route to the summit they would inevitably cross many more oddities: Pokemon displaying unusual behavior, executing maneuvers hitherto unseen on Hoenn—though it paled in comparison to what lie in store at the mountain's peak. A dense fog had rolled over the mountain, and enshrouded within this mystifying phenomenon was Yveltal, though all others whom approached would see only the mist and shadows as they were led in circles around Him.[break][break]

'...A strange phenomenon, is it not, Executioner?'[break][break]

Yveltal watches on with renewed curiosity at the wonders of life, eyes unblinking orbs of luminescent cyan.

"Alright Howie, you ready?" She woofed and wagged that sweeping bush of a tail, her tongue lapping over the side of her mouth in a dorky way. "Just don't go too far ahead of me, alright? Good girl," he doted over her with some pats on the head, dragging his fingers like a comb through her mane. And then he set her to track the scent of the Lopunny fluffle reported to have swarmed Route 103.[break][break]

When she inevitably caught their scent, she gave a deep bark before pointing her muzzle in the right direction. And sure enough as they stalked forward quietly, there they were: Buneary and Lopunny all hippity-hoppity as they reveled in the spring bloom. And then a pokeball flew out from the concealment of shrubbery and tall grass, a deluge of pokeballs descending on the swarm.[break][break]

Alakazam, a telepath, notices his presence along the Jagged Pass. It confronts him but not directly; earth shifts and bars his path, so his mind reaches out. 'I w o u l d n o t f i g h t y o u u n l e s s n e c e s s a r y,' he would begin.

'B u t I k n o w t h a t I w o u l d w i n.'

Dark aura is strong in the echoes of his psyche. It was a threat, but made as a deterent. Whether it realizes the full weight his threat carries, or simply like him does not wish to fight except out of necessity, it retreats back into its seclusion. Thus Adrian can continue his search unabated.

A gentle and pleasant walk through the woods, Howitzer at his side. The smell of spring is out in full force, a fanciful palate of aromas wafting through the air as they brush past shrubbery and tickling fields of grass. As they make their way towards his gracidea seed, Howitzer comes across a colorful daisy. She brushes her nose against this particularly heavy specimen hanging over the path, letting out a hearty sneeze just moments after. AchWOOF![break][break]

"Heh, you alright girl?" He'd missed how goofy she was.[break][break]

Up ahead of them the path grew darker, where the trees denied the light's passage and the grass became sparse, and the cobwebs of an Ariados now clung feebly to this mirkwood—waiting to be blown away. It is here that he's placed the seed, hoping the damp, unused soil would be a fertile grounds for the seed's beginnings. Only, he'd fully expected to have to relocate it after it sprouted.[break][break]

That would not appear to be the case, he shortly realizes after crossing the threshold to where he'd buried the seed, noting the full bloom of a hibiscus flower. Him and Howitzer stood there, watching as breaks in the tree's canopy allowed godrays into the forest, which glinted off its surface. "See that, girl? That's why we're here—"[break][break]

Lowering her nose to the earth she padded forward straight for the gracidea in bloom, and for a moment he worried she might eat it, reaching out in mild alarm vainly just as her wet dog nose pressed against a single petal covered in morning dew. But before either could react further—[break][break]

Something sprang to life in that moment, as the tree's canopy seemed to shift and its lumbering branches began to groan, allowing a wave of light to come surging over the nearby flora. Grass sprouts began ascending from littles pores in the soil, and flowers began to twirl from out of unseen shoots, vibrant and almost lively in their sudden emergence. Adrian felt his leg jerk away, but he remained enthralled by the beauty of the floral arrangements. Howitzer padded backwards from the original flower, looking up to Adrian and back expectantly, until he realized that a single white stone had emerged from the earth.[break][break]

More of a tablet really, dusted in loose soil...[break][break]

What's it got on there, he steps forward on an impulse.

Adrian finangles with the Klefki bound to his wrist as he passes through every corridor, antechamber and bulkhead that separates him from Martin del Mars' office. Normally being ordered to present himself somewhere on any schedule but his own would go over poorly, but these circumstances were the exception. A modicum of camaraderie had been tended and nurtured between them, something that could rarely be said of Adrian and his alleged superiors. Still, this all left him tense with unease.[break][break]

What did they want to get out of him? How many times would they insist upon drawing blood from this stone?[break][break]

Hesitating outside the doorway, he takes a breath before making the plunge, going over the top... and arriving in Admin Mars' official quarters. Two biosignatures...[break][break]

"You keep fine company," he motions towards the shiny Persian that is all-too-reminiscent of Miser, a similarly disposed Persian that had been his, once upon a time. And now it was gone, whisked away at the whim of the Light-Eater, unbeknownst to him. The door clicks behind him.[break][break]

Sometimes doors are shut, never to be opened again. He hopes this is not like one of those moments.[break][break]

Immediately he goes for a seat, not one for formalities. A brisk gait carries him to a cushioned chair, which he eases himself into, draping himself against it leisurely and without decorum. A lanky leg pushes against the floor, swiveling the chair left-to-right in an oscillating pattern.[break][break]

A hand raises to place a single digit against his jaw bone, his eyes narrowing into slits while he analyzed the room with a dread visage. "So... You wanted to see me?"[break][break]

His browline shoots up amusedly, his lips spreading thin as if to suggest, 'Well I'm here now. This'd better be good.'

[attr=class,bulk]He stayed out here quite often these past spanning weeks, though he had yet told anyone a whiff of why, prefering solitude. In the years past, the purpose of his pilgrimage was to mourn the loss of someone loved, and while still he pitied the exploits of his younger self... He did not count himself among those trapped in their miseries any longer. Purpose had substituted for passion, but no more...[break][break]

Fingers quietly finish padding letters on a keypad to send a message. Others would be joining him soon, to share in this moment, but for now it was just him and her. Howitzer, thought never to be reborn, was returned to him now. It did little to dampen the solace her return to his life offered, but such was irrefutably true: This was not the same Howitzer. Fingers dig through her flowing mane beneath the clementine sunset, and she whines quietly into the twilight hours. His loss was reflected in her eyes, deep pools of amber with sunken bags beneath them to highlight the melancholy.[break][break]

Both of them had lost so much, but they were bonded in that way.[break][break]

"It'll get better Howie, I promise... Until then, I'm here for you..."[break][break]

Brushing against her dense coat, he looks pensively to the enshrined urn he'd placed at the summit of Mt. Pyre some two years prior. She would know what it meant, but to her, it represented something else. Someone else. The stranger that was also him.[break][break]

"Do you remember the day we met? When my father first brought you home...?" Another whine escaped Howitzer, but she pushed the brunt of her weight against him, crushing him in her warmth as she was wont to do.

"No, not in a technical sense," Adrian suggested sincerely, taking a moment to recollect what he'd been able to see before casting Angelo a cautious glance. "There's a groove in the soft parts of the earth here, almost like... A wheel?"

Could've been the result of a pokemon battle too, he supposed, but there was more to it. Adrian had detected only a faint hint of its aura, but it was uniquely disposed, just like the ones he'd seen in distortions. It wasn't enough to be certain, but between that and how violently feral the pokemon was... The location of their disappearance, and the first few distortions... "There's some tracks up ahead."

Adrian stumbled forward feeling a little lightheaded, gesturing to the prints that disturbed the natural state of the forest floor. Whatever it was walked on four legs, but had differing amounts of claws on its fore and hind. He took out his phone and scanned it with his pokedex app, though it hesitated to draw a comparison until...

"Hmm... I think I would've seen it standing there if it were on two legs, besides—these tracks belong to something quadrupedal..." Adrian showed the results to Angelo regardless, but then he figured it might be worth showing it to the only witness among them: Arcanine.

"C'mere girl," he calls out affectionately, running a hand through their fur as they curled around him where he stood. "Take a look at this... Is this what you saw?"

She whined and hesitated to answer, her head tilting and her low grumble giving mixed messages to the way her eyes seemed to recognize the creature trapped in the screen. It remained inconclusive.
