Words can often seem so insignificant, so simple, and yet they can speak of things that are beyond any comprehension. A single word to represent a whole universal phenomenon; to represent power unlike any other. Is that what the Unown Report is, then? Words of power? ANTIMATTER is the first one that appears when opening the peculiar app, but it’s not the first that had been registered half a year ago when so many people had been given these mysterious devices…

There’s almost a hundred words now.

The mere thought of them brings up the list in Mars’ mind, every single entry being perfectly documented and committed to memory – to an unnatural degree. All ninety of them.

So many words, so many months passed, and yet, the same questions that had been raised when first receiving the mysterious devices still remain:

Who had created the report? Why give it to people? Why is it incomplete? What does it do?
[break][break]
Theories upon theories pile up in the admin’s mind, but the closer his strange bond to the report becomes, the more questions that come. Answers are needed, to an almost desperate degree. Once more, Pandora’s pithos lies before him, but the lid won't budge, so what else is there left for him to do other than prying it open and forcing the truth to come out?

Last time he had done something like this, it had almost gotten him killed, and yet, despite knowing this, he still calls the meeting…

Rocket headquarters, north wing, his office, 5PM.

Sitting at his desk, the admin looks through a manila folder while he waits, and nearby, on an all too comfortable bed, a Persian peaceful naps until the moment approaching footsteps interrupt her slumber. Penny’s round ears twitch, yawning as her attention turns to the door.

Adrian finangles with the Klefki bound to his wrist as he passes through every corridor, antechamber and bulkhead that separates him from Martin del Mars' office. Normally being ordered to present himself somewhere on any schedule but his own would go over poorly, but these circumstances were the exception. A modicum of camaraderie had been tended and nurtured between them, something that could rarely be said of Adrian and his alleged superiors. Still, this all left him tense with unease.[break][break]

What did they want to get out of him? How many times would they insist upon drawing blood from this stone?[break][break]

Hesitating outside the doorway, he takes a breath before making the plunge, going over the top... and arriving in Admin Mars' official quarters. Two biosignatures...[break][break]

"You keep fine company," he motions towards the shiny Persian that is all-too-reminiscent of Miser, a similarly disposed Persian that had been his, once upon a time. And now it was gone, whisked away at the whim of the Light-Eater, unbeknownst to him. The door clicks behind him.[break][break]

Sometimes doors are shut, never to be opened again. He hopes this is not like one of those moments.[break][break]

Immediately he goes for a seat, not one for formalities. A brisk gait carries him to a cushioned chair, which he eases himself into, draping himself against it leisurely and without decorum. A lanky leg pushes against the floor, swiveling the chair left-to-right in an oscillating pattern.[break][break]

A hand raises to place a single digit against his jaw bone, his eyes narrowing into slits while he analyzed the room with a dread visage. "So... You wanted to see me?"[break][break]

His browline shoots up amusedly, his lips spreading thin as if to suggest, 'Well I'm here now. This'd better be good.'

Of course Mars thinks so, since he was the one who planned all this; since he called Adrian Malcolm to his office with a very specific purpose in mind and intended on making an offer about which most Team Rocket members only dream. He does not delay on explaining, either…

”Thank you, her name is Penny.” The Persian stretches like the feline she is, circling around the desk and approaching the man she calls her trainer. He pets her before returning his attention to Adrian. ”As for why you’re here… I’m working on a new project, and I want you to help.” An admin personally recruiting him for a task. Something important. A smirk tugs at his lips, eyes of amber meeting those of the man before him. There’s so much more to it, of course. So many details to give, but as if by heavenly providence, right on cue, and with impeccable timing, everything changes.

For, see, as much as Mars had planned all this, he couldn’t have planned for the word that suddenly and unexpectedly materialises itself into his mind. Uninvited but always welcomed as if it were exactly where it belongs; the sight of it remembered as perfectly as if it had always been part of the Unown Report.

How much more would they alienate him from his ethics? He was still struggling to acclimate to the idea of sacrificing pokemon, no matter what sort of propaganda they hit him with, and Adrian was much more adverse to confronting people—especially innocents. Although his affiliation had earned him some opportunities that may not have otherwise been afforded him, Adrian still yet fostered reservations about his decision to enlist to Rocket...[break][break]

From disinterested to exasperated, Adrian's expression said it all—but Mars was not forthcoming. Drumming his fingers impatiently, he quietly wondered, 'Why won't he just get on with it?' An answer manifested itself when they finally broke their silence. "Eugh... So what if it did...?"[break][break]

Adrian fished his phone from its pocket, finangling with the passkey before swiping around for the Unown Report. Flicking down along the list for the myriad entries, he doesn't spot it at first. It's just a wall of words he needs a dictionary to understand, same as ever. ...But then a name, scrunched together so as to not contain any spaces.[break][break]

Eyelids squint, heavy with skepticism, and he reasonably doubts the authenticity of this entry. He dials back up the list and refreshes it, starting from the top, noticing his name listed among the Alpha directory. It boded ill.[break][break]

"As if I needed the reminder I'm being targeted by those unown chumps... Those nutless punks better hope I can't figure out how to wrangle my own Unown one of these days," he spat the words full of vitriol before turning his attention back to Martin. "This isn't a prank, right? 'Cause... well, how'd you know it updated?"

No, that’s not the question, because the answers to that one are all too easily speculated. He knows they both have made the most contributions to the report, he knows they have tirelessly searched for Unown, he knows Adrian Malcolm is an avatar and that the assassins that arm themselves with the Symbol Pokémon seem to hunt avatars for sport, and he knows Yveltal’s name is one of the Unown Report’s one hundred words. He knows because he has been researching the Unown Report for months, he knows because he has a connection to it that’s impossible to properly explain…

So, why now?

”It’s not a prank, Adrian.” It’s at this point that Mars knows that to have Adrian Malcolm’s trust in this, he too will have to trust him and explain what he doesn’t really know how to explain. Which, admittedly, he hadn’t originally intended to do because it’ll sound fucking insane. As if to encourage him, Penningar sits by his side, putting one heavy paw on his chair's armrest. ”Remember when I made that portal with Unown in the Tree of Life? The one that got us back to Sootopolis? I think something changed back then… in my head. Ever since then, I remember the whole Unown Report perfectly – every single word – and I even know when new ones are added.”

Suspicious? Of course it is. Even Mars is suspicious of it, paranoid as he is. It’s why he needs answers, why he needs to understand, because the questions and speculations are driving him mad.

To someone like Mars, few things are more annoying than not understanding something happening to him, and over the past few months, this annoyance has presented itself all too frequently.

”That’s what I wanted you to help with. Finding answers. I need to know what the report is, who made it, and what the hell is its purpose. Especially now.”

Especially now that both their names are among all those words that time and again have been proven to be both powerful and dangerous.

Adrian's lips pursed with disbelieving frown as Mars mouthed the words, but then reality put him in check: Did it really sound all that much stranger than weirdos opening rifts between dimensions to take pot shots at avatars...? Not really. But it was just as convenient as it was confounding. Why Martin, and why during the raid on the Tree of Life? A thought occurred to him suddenly...[break][break]

Things got more... interesting the more one punched holes in the fabric dividing space. Celestial objects were moving ahead of schedule. Dimensions were spilling over where they lapsed. And the Tree of Life, which they knew didn't belong in their Hoenn, had somehow acted as an anchor for them to traverse into some greater expanse beyond. Adrian knew more surely what they had witnessed and encountered belonged to another world—the one in which the wasting Xerneas belonged. Which would explain why they required the Unown to make their escape. But...[break][break]

Another hole punched into the veil, another miracle...[break][break]

The trick was to control the circumstance to control the outcome, maybe? He's not sure how they combine together and add up to the end result, but that's a greater mystery he cannot expect to solve. Or rather, it seems the mystery has chosen Martin. And maybe he was involved. Perhaps understanding the report in and of itself, as Mars desired to, was the appropriate first step.[break][break]

It was like Adrian to try doing things out of order, though.[break][break]

"Well... if that's your game, then have you tried getting in touch with the guy that ran the food hut? He had a Meowth, didn't he? Strings?" Adrian had never gotten to know the person by name, but the pokemon he was on familiar terms with. It was weird that nobody had tried to get a hold of him to give an official statement on the nature of the report or how he came across it...[break][break]

"Think maybe we should look him up?"[break][break]

In his search for answers, Mars had made a list; detailed, point-by-point, including every single person who he thought might be somehow connected to the Unown Report. People he met and people he had not. People he’s suspicious of.

That list had been paired with all of his theories on what the report is, what it does, and what the goal of its creators might be, and when all of it had been put together on a board… It probably made him look like a damn conspiracy theorist. Mars is all too aware of this, and yet that same digital board is still among the encrypted files in his home office’s computer – left for him to look at when trying to make sense out of it all.

He doesn’t need to look at it to know who Adrian is speaking of, nor to remember the name of the restaurant’s mascot.
[break][break]
”String. As in ’String Theory’. The other pop-up restaurant had a Slurpuff called ‘Branes’, which are… fundamental objects in String Theory, along with strings.” He sighs. The definition of what a ‘brane’ actually is easily comes to mind, but explaining things this way is probably much better than him trying to talk about theoretical physics with Adrian. Definitions only make for layman’s knowledge when it comes to these things. ”We should have paid more attention back then… It’s almost like they were trying to play a game. Making a sick joke.”

A word that appeared in the Unown Report soon after Slateport Beach’s cook-off. A word that Mars can clearly see in his head.

”As far as I’m aware, no one even knows his name. I was thinking of asking Killian to try to find him so we can question him.”

As many resources as Mars may have and as good at his job as he may be, when it comes to finding people, Killian Decker is probably his best bet – intel expert as his fellow admin is.

”Dr. Holo is also on my list. The one from the space centre that hosted the Star Soirée? I was thinking of maybe paying her a visit…”

Those as he couldn't immediately comprehend were only a short web search away from understanding. "I do have internet access."[break][break]

Martin was right though. It should have warranted an investigation. It was a tool they didn't completely understand; they could be funneling information to the enemy, for all anyone knew about the matter.[break][break]

"I don't like Killian." It's irrelevant, but the truth.[break][break]

He tries not to let it get to him any further. Who Mars places their trust in, and delegates tasks to, is of no consequence to him. His prejudice is personal.[break][break]

"Dr. Holo? She was definitely an odd one..." And had intimate knowledge of the celestial objects and their alignment, but also... had she not been keenly aware of the interdream zone? Even if they were not involved, they might've had some foreknowledge that would've been helpful, had it been shared and made public knowledge.[break][break]

Surely the sort of helter skelter that broke out doesn't just go unforeseen and undetected? The more he thought about it, the more it seemed a little more suspicious.[break][break]

Adrian stops there and considers for a moment...[break][break]

"We have no legitimate credentials to get an appointment, and no assurances they'll help us..."[break][break]

Adrian's mind wanders to the state of those Megalopolans as are in their custody, somewhere in a holding cell in a different compartment. He wanted to capture one.[break][break]

An Unown Assassin, like the one that got Moltres' avatar.[break][break]

"We know what they want, we have the bait—all that's left is the trap... And proofing it for Unown travel."[break][break]

That was the trick to it, but surely a means existed.[break][break]

Adrian's eyes are trained hard on Martin, forcing him to consider the merits of his approach. And the risks.

A brow quirks when hearing Adrian’s response, and internally, Mars wonders if he really is this cheeky about everything. Must be an ‘Avatar of Death’ thing. Or, maybe just an Adrian Malcolm thing. ”Fair enough.”

He would have bother with explaining that most people generally don’t seem interested in learning what the words in the Unown Report actually mean, and that the grand majority definitely hadn’t realised the connection between these and the names of the pop-up restaurant mascots (Mars himself also hadn’t until recently), but Adrian’s next comment distracts him too much to care for doing so:

”I don’t like Killian.”
[break][break]
”Ha. Like him or not, Killian Decker is the Head of Intel and he’s damn good at his job.” Despite the way in which he shrugs, there’s an amused smirk, because something about Adrian disliking Killian but apparently being somewhat fond of Mars himself that is all too amusing to him. ’It’s only natural, Adrian has good taste,’ he thinks. An internal joke thought with utmost affection towards Killian, of course. After all, Mars would never insult his own taste.

Now, going back to the topic of the Unown Report and Dr. Holo…

”I figured I could pretend to be interested in making a sizable donation to the space centre and wanting to know more about it. Usually for things like those the people running the facility talk to the donours.”

Easy as that.

Money talks, after all, and Mars is a man who knows how to use his own wealth, status, and reputation to his own advantage. A philanthropist, one who cares for the well-being of Hoenn, it wouldn’t be beyond a man of such reputation to be interested in the space centre – especially after reading about the oncoming meteor.

”You want to set up a trap?” This part does catch his attention, and he considers the option for a short moment, just so slightly reclining back on his chair. ”It’d have to be more than just Unown travel proof. Pretty sure they can teleport on their own. But… Hmm… Yeah, that could work. We’d just need to make sure we’re prepare to deal with them.”

Even for him, there’s no telling what other abilities these "assassins" may possess.

But neither of them were here to argue on that point, so his complaint quickly found itself swept under the rug while they dug in on the greater matter at hand. Mars has a plan to get close to the observatory's curators, but Adrian himself still isn't satisfied. First Adrian had to be convinced they were invariably involved, which was something still cast in reasonable doubt. They might be innocent after all.[break][break]

Nothing bothered him more than wasting precious time.[break][break]

But as an aside from all of that, Adrian simply wishes to cut to the chase and avoid all the subterfuge. He wants to go right for the throat from the get go, and setting a trap might get him that. Or it could even land him in the afterlife.[break][break]

I bet you'd like that, he says in jest to his patron unseen.[break][break]

Martin has his misgivings about the finer nuances of the plan, of course. But that perhaps isn't his main concern. Only if they felt they could not reasonably get what they came for, would the Unown assassins choose to flee.[break][break]

The plan had its risks, but they themselves would benefit more from understanding why the assassins were targeting avatars and their legendaries as well. Adrian couldn't fathom much other than they were the next asshole on the long list of 'em. He'd like to have a name to jot down though, rather than acting in anonymity.[break][break]

It all brings too many reminders of everything that had happened back in January, when the so-called ‘Father Winter’ had sent him to a doomed world and he had encountered assassins. Things had been different there, as far as Mars can tell in retrospect. There weren’t any avatars, not present at least, but people could fuse with pokémon and use their powers. No avatars, yet the assassins had killed them all and attempted to destroy their world anyway.

What is their purpose? What is their goal? Is that what they want to do here as well?

The thought is grim, and Mars does his best to push it away, sighing before giving Adrian an answer. ”That’s true, it does seem like avatars are one of the things that lure them here. I guess the best we can do is be prepared for whenever they show up.”

Unless they can figure out a proper way to lure into a trap, but that seems all too unlikely at this point in time. They need to find out more, but it’s not like the assassins Mars himself has encountered have been particularly talkative or willing to give any answers.
