Martin was right though. It should have warranted an investigation. It was a tool they didn't completely understand; they could be funneling information to the enemy, for all anyone knew about the matter.[break][break]

"I don't like Killian." It's irrelevant, but the truth.[break][break]

He tries not to let it get to him any further. Who Mars places their trust in, and delegates tasks to, is of no consequence to him. His prejudice is personal.[break][break]

"Dr. Holo? She was definitely an odd one..." And had intimate knowledge of the celestial objects and their alignment, but also... had she not been keenly aware of the interdream zone? Even if they were not involved, they might've had some foreknowledge that would've been helpful, had it been shared and made public knowledge.[break][break]

Surely the sort of helter skelter that broke out doesn't just go unforeseen and undetected? The more he thought about it, the more it seemed a little more suspicious.[break][break]

Adrian stops there and considers for a moment...[break][break]

"We have no legitimate credentials to get an appointment, and no assurances they'll help us..."[break][break]

Adrian's mind wanders to the state of those Megalopolans as are in their custody, somewhere in a holding cell in a different compartment. He wanted to capture one.[break][break]

"We know what they want, we have the bait—all that's left is the trap... And proofing it for Unown travel."[break][break]

That was the trick to it, but surely a means existed.[break][break]

Adrian's eyes are trained hard on Martin, forcing him to consider the merits of his approach. And the risks.

I already have like, two Golduck... Adrian's interest fell considerably when he already owned something, especially if it wasn't already unique to begin with, although in this case he had his considerations. CLOUD NINE was a rare enough ability to come across, but in the end... This pokemon deserved its independence, rather than be crammed into a storage system.[break][break]

Assuming it let him be, he'd leave it to its business.

A look of concern flashes over his eyes as the swarm of Shaymin appear from out of the grass. Howitzer seems intrigued by the first one it finds, but hesitates to investigate further when the flowering fields around them suddenly erupt into a multitude of the Gratitude pokemon all at once. They are seemingly innocent and docile, though one pads over to Adrian on a mission, raising its snout towards the flower cradled in his palm. "You want... this?"[break][break]

With a nod and a yip to confirm his question, it then led him down a path, to a stretch of loamy soil as yet untouched by the verdant growth surrounding them. The creature known as Shaymin looked to him expectantly, its muzzle gesturing to the unused land. "I'm not exactly a gardener," he interjected, but the creature gave him a piercing stare.[break][break]

"Alright, alright..." Before setting the flower down in a pile of dirt without any know-how, he decided to pull on experience. Releasing a Mudsdale from his collection, he recalls the day he acquired it: Helping corrale some pokemon on a ranch. His reward had been a Mudbray, if he had not been mistaken. When releases the pokemon brays noisily before calming itself down. Was it the aroma...?[break][break]

"Mudsdale, can you help us out?" Adrian raises the flower, gesturing to the patch of untilled soil with his head, while the Shaymin scuttle about in the undergrowth.[break][break]

After stamping about the earth to scare the Shaymin away, that it might clear its work space, the Mudsdale gets to work; hooves like iron gouge into the earth and shift the soil, grinding it into a softer, almost clay-like texture compared to the dusty surface dirt. Adrian covers his mouth while the task is carried out, and notices how the Mudsdale seems at peace during the toil and trouble of it.[break][break]

Once done, the horse continues to trot about while inspecting its work, before stamping a single foot at its chosen spot, and bringing Adrian over towards it, brushing its snout against him when he doesn't budge at first.[break][break]

"Ok, I'm going... Sheesh." Adrian carefully approaches, lowering himself to the ground, his knees impressed upon the soft earth while he scoops some dirt aside, allowing him to bury the root and stem into the earth before covering it in fertile soils. "...There." He looks to Shaymin.

Adrian knew full well the dangers of scaling a mountain unprepared. "Regent, huh?" He should very much like to ask them more about the circumstances they had captured the phoenix's immortal flames for their own use, but they had more pressing matters: Avoid sleeping but allow the Yawn to hit. It sounded easy enough on paper.[break][break]

But the caveat was there for those with an ear for detail.[break][break]

This time he needn't visit the rotomi; Riffraff's pokeball was already fastened to his belt, which made it easy to pluck off and lob forward to release a rockin' Toxtricity onto the arena. After they had all released their pokemon, a visceral YAWN echoed across the stage, prompting even Adrian to lift a hand to stifle an exhausted yawn. But then it was their turn. "Alright Riff, hit 'em with your UPROAR!"[break][break]

While they're all conversing, Adrian simply absorbs the information quietly, until making a stern quip: "Did you really just crack that joke?" Lame ass motherf#$%er...

He'd pat her side gently, stroking through the fur twice before withdrawing, rising to his full height and stepping over towards Rowan while she languished upon the grass, alone.[break][break]

"Hey Row," he croaked back with audible fatigue, approaching them with an arm outstretched for embrace, planting a single kiss upon their cheek in greeting.[break][break]

"Yeah, it's Howitzer..." How did he want to explain it? For now he snaked an arm around the thin of Row's waist until they were snug against him, Mistral plopping up beside him. Eyes shift back to the Arcanine whining softly into the night, eliciting a shimmer from his own eyes. "...But it's not my Howitzer." Adrian had made a deal with the devil he didn't know. Why should he be surprised by any of this?[break][break]

"There were these letters over the holiday that, well... They were more than letters—they had something to do with the unown report; it was pretty cryptic..." Arcanine rolled over away from them, perhaps trying to drown out the sound, or simply to satisfy some deeply visceral need. Suffice it to say, Adrian did not take it well. It wounded him, every little show of anything that wasn't outright acceptance and joy. Howitzer shouldn't have to exist like this. No one should.[break][break]

The thought of her having to make it on her own in some alternate reality was more dreadful than even this, though neither was the miracle he wished for.[break][break]

"It was a trick... He promised whatever I asked, and conjured up a place where I might seek it, using the Unown," this part was essential evidence towards a later conclusion. "Stepped through, and there I was—right where it happened the first time. Slateport Outskirts, going for that stupid briefcase..." Adrian rattled his head with distaste. "Except I died this time, and poor Howie, she was all alone there." He omitted the details of murdering Empirio Saga in a frantic scramble; it wasn't like he meant it, then. Instinct and the will to overcome were what drove him. It did not satisfy, and it did not burden him overly with guilt. "So I brought her home."[break][break]

Except it would never be the home she remembered, not really.[break][break]

Leaning against Rowan for support, he confided: "The Letters from Father Winter were a ploy by the Unown assassins. It was all pretty clever, now that I think about it..." All they had to do was ring the dinner bell, and all their victims came flocking in at the promise of reward. He was glad they hadn't gotten to Rowan.[break][break]

"Too bad they didn't count on me being such a badass," he said with snark.[break][break]

Fingers squeeze into their side while he quietly reflects on Howitzer as she has become.

Adrian had been diving with Furor leading the forray, its trainer clasping one of its jagged dorsal fins while kicking his legs habitually, a his flippered feet doing little to assist the massive pokemon's descent. Somewhere on their flank, his Greninja lagged after them, a backup for in case Adrian encountered any difficulties while diving.[break][break]

Once they reach the cavern Adrian disembarks from Furor, giving it a rough pat against its marred scales while doggypaddling towards the cavern's entrance, bursting through the water's surface into an air pocket under the sea. Greninja follows closely after him, to assure he does not get lost in the murky abyss.[break][break]

Once liberated from the flippers and oxygen filter, Adrian is able to take his first few steps into the deap sea caves, noting the terrain as Greninja follows closely.[break][break]

"Is it so strange? The Church of Arceus was by Ever Grande, wasn't it?" It was still a wonder why there was such an interest in Arceus, and all localized within the area of Ever Grande City, but then again it was practically occam's razor at play. It could've been those who built this place were influenced by the ancient wonders of Sinnoh's mythos. Or maybe, like with anything in Hoenn, there was more to it they simply could not know... until they did.[break][break]

To him, it's only a distraction from the battling.[break][break]

The challenge at least proves quite simple. Sorting through the rotomi, he almost withdraws a Druddigon, but he thinks better of it at the last second. He didn't want to get caught up in any sort of technicalities if he smacked it down from its aerial vantage. Or maybe that was the big brain play...[break][break]

He releases a Swoobat, which flaps around halphazardly while getting its bearings, a little disoriented from being in its pokeball for such a long time. When it comes to with an enthusiastic trill, Adrian finally gives Swoobat its orders: "Swoobat, use Gust on that Aerodactyl up above."[break][break]

When the orders are given, he finally takes a moment to gander at the next inscription. ...Sounds depressive.

They reach the top, and Adrian discovers the meaning of vertigo. On a terrace high in the clouds, overlooking the undae of Hoenn surrounded by ocean on all sides, he wonders where and how this place came to be. Looking back, the pathway begins to erode gradually, leaving them trapped. It's not something he feels exactly good about, so he decides to prepare a contingency.[break][break]

"Murkrow, come back," he withdraws the raven in exchange for its Galarian equivalent, a massive Corviknight adorned in black lustrous feathers. "Keep an eye out for me, eh? Don't wanna take a tumble if this thing goes." The knightly creature gave a shrill shriek before taking off with in a gale. Adrian swore he heard the flowers rustling, but it must've just been the wind from flapping wings...[break][break]

And then it happened again, while all else was still.[break][break]

"Howie, check that out, will you?" Obedient to a fault, she inhaled a deep whiff of air to try and catch a scent from the sea of aromas wafting about. If anyone could make the distinction, he knew it would be Howie. She had a nose that could find anything, if it was there to be found.[break][break]

Her wet, doggy nose plowed through the grove as she closed in on the source of a distinctive fragrance emanating from the garden. C'mon girl, you can do it...[break][break]

Her tail wagged and her forward advance halted suddenly, before she exclaimed with a bark and bounded forward.

Adrian's lips pursed with disbelieving frown as Mars mouthed the words, but then reality put him in check: Did it really sound all that much stranger than weirdos opening rifts between dimensions to take pot shots at avatars...? Not really. But it was just as convenient as it was confounding. Why Martin, and why during the raid on the Tree of Life? A thought occurred to him suddenly...[break][break]

Things got more... interesting the more one punched holes in the fabric dividing space. Celestial objects were moving ahead of schedule. Dimensions were spilling over where they lapsed. And the Tree of Life, which they knew didn't belong in their Hoenn, had somehow acted as an anchor for them to traverse into some greater expanse beyond. Adrian knew more surely what they had witnessed and encountered belonged to another world—the one in which the wasting Xerneas belonged. Which would explain why they required the Unown to make their escape. But...[break][break]

Another hole punched into the veil, another miracle...[break][break]

The trick was to control the circumstance to control the outcome, maybe? He's not sure how they combine together and add up to the end result, but that's a greater mystery he cannot expect to solve. Or rather, it seems the mystery has chosen Martin. And maybe he was involved. Perhaps understanding the report in and of itself, as Mars desired to, was the appropriate first step.[break][break]

It was like Adrian to try doing things out of order, though.[break][break]

"Well... if that's your game, then have you tried getting in touch with the guy that ran the food hut? He had a Meowth, didn't he? Strings?" Adrian had never gotten to know the person by name, but the pokemon he was on familiar terms with. It was weird that nobody had tried to get a hold of him to give an official statement on the nature of the report or how he came across it...[break][break]

"Think maybe we should look him up?"[break][break]

It was said those flames would never burn out as lit by Moltres, so he could only imagine they must have been blessed long ago by the firebird, or somehow stole the secrets of its fire.
