"Don't sweat it," Orion assures him. "It's on me as well."[break][break]

He hadn't followed up with anyone from that night, though he'd met plenty. He wasn't great at follow-through. Kazimir, however, didn't seem to share that problem; five badges? It was an impressive feat.[break][break]

He's cute when he blushes.[break][break]

The thought comes unbidden and Orion does his best to ignore it, instead focusing on the conversation.[break][break]

"If you've got five badges you must be doing something right! I haven't got any."[break][break]

He follows Kazimir's gaze to the encroaching ship, and is thus caught entirely off guard when the other tackles him to the ground. His elbow cracks against the deck and he hits a nerve that sends a jolt of fuzzy pain up and down his arm. In spite of it, he's glad to have avoided the far more disastrous hyper beam that sizzles overhead and takes a chunk out of an upper deck. Had it avoided killing him, he's sure a direct blast from such an attack would at least put him on deaths door.[break][break]

"Shit, thanks, are you OK?"[break][break]

He scrambles to his feet and releases his Absol, who immediately leaps from his side to DETECT and shield passengers from potential danger. It's the only Pokemon he'd brought with him. This was supposed to be a nice, relaxing cruise!

Silence settles between them. To Orion, it feels awkward: it had been because of what he said, hadn't it? Such anxieties keep him from breaking the spell of quiet between them, and he trudges through the desert sands toward their goal with a squirm in his gut.[break][break]

His concerns translate to nervous energy at the other Ranger's shout.[break][break]

Damn it, should have brought someone with Misty Terrain...[break][break]

Hindsight was 20/20, and Orion didn't have time to stare into the rear-view. He whistles for his Flygon and clamps his hands over his ears.

Tiamat levels out in the air and begins to rapidly vibrate her wings. BOOMBURST grows to a deafening pitch, distracting the group of snakes to grant Razz enough time to back off without further harm.

"I'm in no rush," he assures her. "I've cleared my schedule in case of complications."[break][break]

It was something he'd learned as a Ranger and been constantly reminded of as a councilman: things could, and frequently would, go wrong.

He greets the young water-types with a smile, his stiff professionalism evaporating. "I love the names! Sobble are still fairly rare in Hoenn; are you from Galar, perhaps?" He blushes. "You — don't have to answer if that's too personal."[break][break]

He, too, dislikes the howl of wind and the darkening clouds. His grip on the rail tightens as he gazes down into the choppy waters in the hopes of glimpsing the colony. The boat's engine shuts off, and that's Orion's cue to hop into the water next to his Lanturn; Nephelai swims down to illuminate the depths, her lantern catching on branches of pink-and-white. The bleached branches of some Corsola stand out as a stark reminder of climate change.[break][break]

Overhead, an ominous rumble of thunder sounds.

Iris is succinct in her response. It could be her personality, but Orion's own anxieties convince him that he is the cause. His stomach squirms. Those fears are compounded with her next statement: it lacks the fire she'd possessed during their first spat.[break][break]

"Look—" The words are out before he can stop himself. "I know I was a bit of an ass to you before..."[break][break]

A bit. Underselling it. He'd been outraged by the reports he'd heard from others, but he'd heard nothing of the like since she'd been placed with the Rangers. People could change. Maybe she had. Maybe she had gotten good at hiding it. Either way, Orion should have been professional no matter how inflamed he'd been.[break][break]

"It was out of line. I'm not gonna jump down your throat like that again."[break][break]

They're coming up on the seashore house in which the scientists were said to operate. Orion's fingers curl around his Swampert's pokeball as he peers through one of the grimy windows and tries to see if anyone's home.

In spite of his grumbling, Orion's already organizing the ingredients on the counter and setting up bowls. Alex is right: there's no time.

He seems confident enough in his ability to eyeball it, and Orion doesn't want to look incompetent in comparison. He defers to a recipe for peanut butter cookies and nearly swears when he realises the jar he'd bought is half-gone. He'd taped a label to it, rather explicit: DO NOT EAT. That label currently adorned the top of the trash can, alongside the silver seal.[break][break]

"Ugh... add peanut butter to that list."[break][break]

He's scraping every last spoonful from the remainder of the jar and spares a glance over at Alexander's work when the other man comments.

"Maybe it just needs more force?" he reasons, hopes. "These guides are usually made with automatic mixers in mind, I'm sure."

There's some sort of event going on at Slateport's beach: Orion passes a couple wearing matching tees that simply read SPORTS SPORTS SPORTS and gave no further indication of what kind of tournament was in play. Given the location, he thinks it could be beach volleyball, but the crowd's too thick to see through. They've blocked off a few streets closest to the beach to protect pedestrians, and crowds of reporters are out in force.[break][break]

Orion never gave much thought to the media before he took his seat as councilman. Now, they had a habit of descending like vultures whenever there was some major event sweeping Hoenn — and if they were vultures, the recent disaster in Littleroot was fresh roadkill.[break][break]

This time, Orion isn't their target. He recognizes Ranger Adachi, would have known her face even without the recent article printed in HNN about her, and he also recognizes those circling buzzards closing in on their prey. She's not a part of the council, she isn't a celebrity, and Orion has a feeling she won't be as practiced at dodging their attention. Though he could certainly be wrong, he chances an approach.[break][break]

His Alakazam appears at his side, and he grins.[break][break]

"Hey, Kaida! You wanna dodge the press?"

A figure emerges from the shadows like a ghost, pale and shivering. Orion takes an involuntary step back, hand clutching his Absol's pokeball as if seeking reassurance that it was still there. His Noivern circles overhead, lower and lower, in anticipation of threat.[break][break]

Orion's laugh is sudden, sharp, perhaps inappropriate: They speak the same language. Thank fuck.[break][break]

"Define safe." His tone, still light from hysteria, is quick to turn grim. He doesn't take his hand from the pokeball. "Who are you, where did you come from?"[break][break]

He looks — abnormal. Was it the clothes? The dark circles under the eyes? The shaking?[break][break]

No, Orion realises, it's because he looks fucking dead.[break][break]

He was too pale. In this sunless place, Orion supposes that shouldn't be a surprise, but it is.

Razz knew who he was, then. An occurrence that had become more and more common of late, but not one that Orion had grown accustomed to.[break][break]

He laughs, and then his ears burn as he wonders if that was a silly thing to say. This guy didn't seem like the sociable type — which Orion didn't mind in the least, preferred even — and he was probably judging him, now.[break][break]

He fixates on the antidote, anything to take his mind off his embarrassment.[break][break]

"That's great thinking, plenty of shit that can poison you even if it's not a snake."[break][break]

Case in point: Orion's Nidoking, who's released onto the scene as a precautionary measure when they draw close.[break][break]

Orion was, to put it kindly, over cautious. He carried cures for just about everything when he went out on ranging jobs, just in case. You never knew what you might need, even if it meant lugging around a heavy, too-full backpack in the blazing desert heat.[break][break]

"Nothing yet, Basil, just keep the sand off us."[break][break]

Nidoking grunts, wresting control over the mild SANDSTORM and offering a circle of solace like the eye of a storm.[break][break]

Thing was, Orion hadn't seen much of a choice. This was a short-notice task given to the two when the previous bakers had pulled out last minute and the League couldn't afford the PR hit from cancelling a Littleroot fundraiser. It had been a scramble of finding time off and coordinating with Alexander and forgetting who was bringing what, apparently.[break][break]

Maybe it was him. He's not sure any more. Either way, it felt like one royal fuck-up after another.[break][break]

Orion groans. "An assistant. I need one of those."[break][break]

Silph had one, too, though Orion's interactions with her had been minimal outside of their misadventures in Ultra Space.[break][break]

Snapping back to the present, pressing issue, he stares blankly at the ingredient list. "Uh... measuring cups, maybe? Just in case... we've gotta start the first batch like, now, if we want to be going home tonight..."[break][break]

How hard could it be? His thoughts mock him as he cracks eggs over a bowl, frantically trying to dig out a stray bit of eggshell.

Shame burns at the back of his neck, a memory he'd rather forget. If she'd reported him to Lars, he hadn't heard about it.[break][break]

Her Mudkip — Marshtomp, now — looks in better condition than the cynical Orion of the past would have expected.[break][break]

It's easy to relax in Kazimir's presence, and Orion is quickly reminded why he liked him so much. He's friendly, warm, the sort of personality that puts even Orion's awkwardness more at ease.[break][break]

"Hot springs, yeah." He laughs, smiles. "It's a great idea, don't sell yourself short, but uh, not in the middle of a heat wave."

It's a good thing Orion develops a natural bronze to his skin due to his Ranger duties; even the thought of sun-tanning in this heat was enough to make him sweat. Adding the hot springs into the mix was a recipe for heat stroke.[break][break]

Thankfully, Kazimir seems unperturbed by the offer. Bullet: dodged.[break][break]

"You got it."[break][break]

He doesn't judge, slips through the crowd toward the bar and inspects the menu. The non-alcoholic options are more limited, and Orion chooses based on what looks more appetizing in the list of hand-drawn images. For himself, he does much the same — though he does partake in the alcohol, feels it might boost his confidence — and returns with Kazimir's drink in one hand and some fruity cocktail he's already forgotten the name of in his other.[break][break]

Handing one off, he takes a sip and makes a face.[break][break]

"Fuck, that's sweet." Not in a bad way, so he keeps sipping. "Man, that boat's getting damn close to us."[break][break]

It looms on the horizon, imposing. Brushing aside an ominous feeling in his gut, Orion asks, "So what've you been up to this past uh... geez, has it really been six months? Time flies."
