"My entire life is a shake up," he insists, laughing. "If I were a can of soda, I'd have exploded by now."[break][break]

He winces even at the light pressure on his jaw. He opens his mouth, works the muscle and makes a face at the throbbing ache. It's as if his jaw has a pulse of its own. Though he can't see for himself what it looks like, he can feel a lump beneath his fingers.[break][break]

"Like a bitch," he confirms, "but I've had worse."[break][break]

He chuckles again at the grim statement, interpreting it as the same brand of morbid humour he himself enjoyed. If Kazimir wasn't joking, Orion hadn't realised.[break][break]

"If space didn't kill me, these pirates sure as hell won't."[break][break]

Not us, because Orion still had no idea that Kazimir Wynter was in fact the renowned Pokkenger.

Orion nods, pensive. He did miss the ocean, sometimes. Walking along the Lilycove beach at night had been a favourite pastime of his youth. The smell of salt and the hum of the waves could be oddly soothing.[break][break]

Now, it's the birdsong and rustling branches of Fortree that lull him to sleep.[break][break]

"Ah, the Ren-faire. Been a while since I went."[break][break]

He rarely attends for pleasure, too anxious to partake in many of the activities, but his duties as a Ranger made him good security.[break][break]

Underwater, he looks to the shimmering surface above as lightning flashes overhead. Skyler insists that they're safer down here than up there, and his anxieties war with the logic that a storied sea captain would likely understand how things work.[break][break]

His Pokedex functions underwater, and he returns a message.

She signals him to follow, and he casts a last glance toward the boat before choosing to trust her. He follows.

Though he'd heard rumours that she'd died and came back to life, the manner in which it had happened was impossible to pin down. Everyone seemed to have a different opinion or idea of how it happened. He can tell it weighs on her, and keeps this curiosity to himself.[break][break]

She'd answered the burning question, and that was gracious enough.[break][break]

He tilts his head. "The media, or the region falling apart?" Speaking of the media, they seem to have successfully gotten out of their sight. It's a relief to stop racing about for a moment, let the spike of adrenaline neutralize. "Honestly, I only got involved in both those things around the new year when I ran for office. It sort of coincided with the Rangers trusting me with some of the bigger stuff, and next thing I know I'm in the middle of it with everyone else."[break][break]

He'd even gone to space at one point. Wild.

One seems larger than her mate, slithering forward and leaving a deep track through the sand. Its paralyzing glare lands upon Tiamat, who'd attacked its young, but the ground-type is unaffected. Orion has just enough time to send out his Aegislash and lift the shield defensively as the Arbok spits acid toward them.[break][break]

He's a ranger. He doesn't want to hurt these wild Pokemon, especially not when they were trying to protect their family.

His tone is sharp with panic, edged with hope. None of the Pokemon he'd brought with him are able to neutralize this threat beyond providing protection from the poison.

Though it's clear they disagree on such philosophies, Orion lets it drop without much fuss. He likes Evan and doesn't want to make an ass of himself by digging a deeper hole.[break][break]

He softens immediately, however, as Evan's Null snorts. It's a subtle show of its responsiveness, personality, and Evan's next words coax a quiet smile from the councilman.[break][break]

"That's — adorable." He chuckles softly. "Percy — that's, uh, what I call him — seems to really like my Espeon. I think she keeps him calm. You know how psychic-types can be."[break][break]

It's the reason Orion likes them so much. They had a level of understanding above most.[break][break]

"If you ever find out anything that can help them, would you tell me?" This request sees his expression contort with pain. "I'll do the same. I just — I want to make him as comfortable as he can. My fault he's like this, and all."

There's the biggest, fanciest one that everyone prefers, several 'in-case-of-emergency' machines, and the busted one below the sink.[break][break]

His arm's already aching from the force with which he needs to mix the ingredients by hand. Alexander isn't faring much better. Orion's mixture looks fine to the naked eye, but he's sure there should have been more peanut butter added.[break][break]

In a desperate bid to salvage the taste, make it less bland, he grabs some chocolate chips and adds them in.[break][break]

"Well I don't know how they'll taste, but they're in."[break][break]

Now he just has to keep an eye on them and ensure they don't burn. At least he knows how to do this part right.

"No kidding. I heard there was an increase in pirate activity but I didn't expect—"[break][break]

He cuts himself off, realising that his Absol is in danger. Surrounded by a couple of the pirates' Pokemon, the fur along the creature's spine bristles as it growls and swings its head around in distress.[break][break]

Orion yanks the pin from his lapel, and his Absol is swallowed in a blinding flash of white. Its mega evolution is stronger, quicker, more capable — it glances back to give its trainer a reassuring nod before leaping back into action.[break][break]

In the short time it had taken, Kaz has disappeared.[break][break]

Orion finds him soaking wet next to a Jacuzzi. There's a pirate slumped unconscious at his feet, but Kazimir himself seems unharmed, so Orion manages a weak laugh at his jest.[break][break]

Their Pokemon gain the upper hand over the pirates, and Orion steps in to physically detain one of the men who hasn't been tossed off the ship by Kazimir's bird. He's rewarded with a solid punch to his jaw before he gets the guy down, and he rubs at it irritably.[break][break]

"Just once, I'd love to go somewhere and have nothing go wrong."

"Shit." It's heavy. His tone reflects this, and he exhales. "That's — I mean, it's amazing, but also... holy shit, that sucks."

Councilman Lykos, articulate as always.[break][break]

"I'm glad you're OK," he admits, darting down another street. It's the outskirts, the part of the city they warn people to stay away from, but it's nothing to fear for the two of them. "The Rangers need people like you. Hoenn needs people like you. I swear, every other month it's falling apart."[break][break]

He laughs, but it's strained and humorless.

"Oh, same, actually." The back of his neck prickles at the thought of Lilycove; it's never been as much a home to him as Fortree. It's only in the interest of relating to Skyler that he doesn't fall back on his instinctive lies. "With the no-travelling and everything."

She's younger than him, he thinks: if they'd been close in age, they might've grown up together.[break][break]

"I'm in Fortree now," he adds, "but I still visit Lilycove on occasion for work."[break][break]

He hates every minute of those days, save for when he can find the time to visit avery jones, but he keeps this to himself.[break][break]

As the ocean's water churns and darkens with the skies overhead, Orion release his Swampert from its ball. Though Nephelai was good for providing light, Orion's Swampert brought him a feeling of comfort, safety: they'd endured the New Years attack together, and their bond had been strengthened for it.[break][break]

Lightning arcs across the sky. Underwater, Orion casts a silent look of concern toward Skyler: What do you want to do? It's dangerous to dive under these conditions, but Orion's duty as a Ranger was to keep others safe. He wasn't going to abandon her.

Though his job as a Ranger lent Orion the stamina required to keep up with Snorlax, speed was another matter entirely. It's not long before the large creature's momentum has gained enough to leave its trainer in the dust.[break][break]

Thankfully, the amount of noise Snorlax made as it crushed its way through targets provided ample warning for anyone in its path to get out of the way.[break][break]

Orion attempts a clumsy axe kick on a nearby board, if only to feel like he's contributing to the team.[break][break]

Having chosen a random partner assignment, Orion has no idea what to expect as they are left on the island. Its lush jungles look beautiful from afar, deceptively concealing the danger he'd been warned could lurk within.[break][break]

He turns to the girl, to whom he hadn't been introduced. "If we're gonna be stuck together for a week, you might as well know whose name to curse, huh?" An awkward attempt at humour, accompanied by a quick smile. "Orion Lykos. They never told me yours."

Kaida gives Orion all the confirmation he needs, and suddenly they're somewhere else.[break][break]

Circe's TELEPORT takes them to a nearby alleyway, and Orion grins as he gestures down one of the side streets. One of the advantages of his social anxiety was knowing the best routes to take to avoid as many people as possible.[break][break]

"They been giving you a lot of trouble since Littleroot?"[break][break]

He hadn't been there, but like everyone else, he's heard the stories. He'd suffered the press in the aftermath of the New Years and couldn't imagine how much worse it was when Kaida had supposedly died and come back to life.[break][break]

"You're probably getting tired of answering this," he says, bracing, "but... is it true, what happened?"[break][break]

He peeks out from an alley and spots a news van, dodges back and points down another route.

He laughs, tries to brush aside his misgivings. When asked about the strange creatures they'd created, he shakes his head.[break][break]

"Not much. A — friend of mine had one. It reacted to whatever the hell that clown thing was, at New Years." He hopes Evan watches the news. He doesn't want to have to explain the Night Market incident if he can avoid it. "Other than that, mine seems... passive. It hates this damned contraption; I feel awful for having gone through with those instructions."

Orion's never seen a Toucannon in person before. He admires it with wide-eyes, jests: "I didn't know you kept Pokemon that weren't dogs."[break][break]

Obstagoon wasn't exactly a dog either, he supposed, but it was more dog-like than the large-beaked bird that perched upon Kyle's shoulder. It made Kyle look like half a pirate himself, the stereotypical ones from kids stories who always had chatty birds and hook-hands.[break][break]

He's not at all expecting the attack.[break][break]

A powerful surge of energy bursts forward from Toucannon's beak and slams into the hull of the other ship. It's taking on water but it only seems to aggravate the pirates more: they're shouting profanities and buzzing about the deck of their soon-to-be-sinking vessel like a swarm of angry bees. One of them hurls a pokeball, which bursts in mid-air and releases a Pelliper whose presence immediately summons a drizzle.[break][break]

Orion releases his Swampert in turn; it throws up a WIDE GUARD.[break][break]

"We'll keep them from getting aboard!" Sure enough, like it's playing goalie for a sports team, Swampert lets nothing past its guard. It knocks one of the pirates into the water with a gleeful cry. "Keep doing — whatever you did, that was awesome!"
