As Orion approaches the Mariner 2, an ominous rumble of thunder announces his presence. A bad omen, perhaps — Orion, like his Absol, heralding disaster. He tries not to think about it.[break][break]

Dark eyes scan the horizon, fix upon the woman that hails him.[break][break]

"Morning!" he calls back.[break][break]

They meet in the middle, and Orion offers a politician's handshake. Firm, brief, professional. Force of habit.[break][break]

"The pleasure is mine, Captain. Orion Lykos, Ranger."[break][break]

Councilman, too, but he rarely mentions that.[break][break]

Unfortunately, this position has taught him to analyze others. He notes her energy, wonders if it has something to do with the encroaching storm. He hopes not. If the captain's nervous, then...[break][break]

"Will you be diving as well?" [break][break]

He'd dressed in his own wetsuit, flippers slapping against the deck. At his waist, two pokeballs were secured. He sends one of them into the water; the Lanturn makes a gentle splash and surfaces shortly after, chattering happily.[break][break]

"This is Nephelai," he informs Skyler. "She's my diving partner."

Orion's grateful for his sunglasses as he looks up to track the firework's path into the air, well aware he'd be sun-blind without them. He's admittedly a little giddy himself — he can't support most firework displays on principle — but finds himself disappointed by the incredibly lackluster pop of colour against sunny skies.[break][break]

"Well, if we're still out here by the time the sun starts setting, we should set off the rest."[break][break]

It's part suggestion, part invitation: he's got nowhere else to be today, having cleared his schedule off for this particular venture.[break][break]

His gaze is drawn repeatedly to the absurd sight of an Obstagoon tending the barbecue. It's doing a surprisingly good job of it, and the smell makes Orion's mouth water.[break][break]

Returning his gaze to the horizon, the councilman smirks.[break][break]

"Shit, I think it actually worked — get ready, they're heading right for us!"[break][break]

There's a renewed sense of energy about Orion as he drops the binoculars back about his neck and returns to a lounge chair, aiming to keep up appearances as a dumb, rich tourist. He's distinctly aware of the pokeball belt right next to the chair, and of every Pokemon he'd brought along for the trip.

"Hey — those are expensive!"[break][break]

Orion's a few yards away when he spots the meddling Dedenne, calls out in spite of himself. His sharp shout sends the creature scurrying into the safety of the leaves, momentarily disappearing from sight. He definitely should have snuck up on it, but... his Salacs.[break][break]

In the end, it's the Dedenne's cord-like tail that gives it away. Its cord-like tail catches on a low-hanging branch, and an impulsive desire to grab it is overruled by a ranger's compassion and unwillingness to hurt the little mouse, even if it was potentially costing him a lot of money.

Instead, he catches it around the middle and makes a face when it nips at his fingers.[break][break]

"Chill out, I'm not going to hurt you, but you can't be eating my plants..."[break][break]

He carries it off a safe distance away and gives it some Pokefood, instead, to placate it and hopefully dissuade the little bugger from returning.

Orion's Flygon is no doubt what catches the attention of Cobalt. Sand stirs up in the wind from her wings as the bug-eyed dragon makes her landing, and Orion slides from her back.[break][break]

He'd have introduced himself if not for the cloud of dust that threatens to choke him; he's waiting for it to die down when his ranging partner gets straight to the point. The guy's a rookie, someone Orion's not heard of before getting the mission debriefing, but he makes a good — if flustered — first impression with his competence.[break][break]

A monocular is handed to him. He's got binoculars around his neck, part of his Ranger get-up, but he doesn't comment. Instead, he politely uses it to zoom in on the indicated locations before nodding and handing it back.[break][break]

"Nice work."[break][break]

As if the desert's not hot and miserable enough already, the damned heat wave makes it almost unbearable. Orion pushes damp hair back from his forehead and secures his goggles.[break][break]

"We'll start with the closest and work our way out, then." He starts walking, sensing this guy appreciates action rather than conversation. Flygon alights and follows from the air. "You're Razz Kingsman, right? That's what the file said, anyway, but they've gotten it mixed up before. All depends who's on paperwork duty, heh. Name's Orion."

His brow furrows as Fernando delivers his to-the-point assessment of the Elite Four. It's only the fact that they're discussing the Four that it clicks: Stormy must not be her real name. That's fair. Orion's not his, either. While he finds Silph's judgement of her harsh, he doesn't argue them in the moment. They've more pressing matters.[break][break]

"Neutral's what I aim for," he agrees: his way of assuring Fernando that no offense was taken.[break][break]

He hopes they can solve this without having to drag kim cole-essam into it, too.[break][break]

He takes what notes he can based on Fernando's report: purple, flying, incredibly strong. It's not much to work with, but it's all they've got. That they'd managed to avoid surveillance and any reports from news or nosy civilians was a testament to the attacker's caution. They wouldn't slip up easy, he imagines.[break][break]

"I'll look into what I can," he promises. "Who else knows? Hospital?"[break][break]

He'd been bandaged up somewhere, after all: how much had he told them about the Pokemon in particular?

These are words Orion's coming to regret as he stands in the office kitchen, opening drawers and cupboards and realising just how many steps of the recipe they were following required precise measurements. This is a space where tired government employees make coffee and microwave leftovers, not one meant for baking.[break][break]

"We'll just eyeball it, yeah?"[break][break]

The question is directed to his colleague and fellow councilman, ALEXANDER STONE, as Orion looks up from the cupboard under the sink. Nothing down here but a stray cobweb and some cleaning supplies, an old coffee maker someone's neglected to toss out.[break][break]

He stands up, frowns at the ingredients on the counter. Something's missing. It hits Orion in a real big brain moment:[break][break]

"Hey, weren't you going to bring the baking soda?"

As he approaches the rendezvous point and recognizes his ranging partner, there's a beat before Orion says anything. He hasn't forgotten the terms they'd parted on, the ass he'd made of himself in his anger.[break][break]

Since then, she's stuck it out with the rangers.[break][break]

"I heard your Mudkip evolved." Is it his attempt to break the ice? Who knows. His tone lacks the tension and disgust it had possessed during their last interaction. "You bring him along for this?"[break][break]

Orion's got his Swampert, though it remains in its pokeball. Out of its ball is a Kubfu that sits on Orion's shoulders like a little kid. It grins at Iris, blissfully unaware of the awkward history between them.

The S.S. Primarina sets sail from the Lilycove docks to a muted fanfare from those onboard; she was on her way to Mossdeep, taking the longest route to accommodate the party aboard.[break][break]

It's not the trip to Lavaridge's hot springs that Kazimir had suggested all the way back in February — Orion had thought that a poor idea with the heat wave sweeping through Hoenn — but it had seemed an entertaining backdrop for catching up with the other man.[break][break]

He'd found the number in his contacts and it had taken him a hot minute to remember whose it was.[break][break]

"I don't usually save random numbers in my phone," he tells Kazimir with a chuckle, after they've met up on board, "so I was like — who's this guy?"[break][break]

There's a bar serving cocktails, and Orion gestures in its general direction. "You want a drink?"[break][break]

Then he blushes, because like, this hadn't been set up as a date. I mean, that's how they'd met, with the speed-dating and all, but he'd suggested this as a way to reconnect considering they'd made loose plans to hang out at the time. Was he being too forward? Oh, god.

Fernando had a point. If he could manage to effectively disappear, no one would be able to track him. Another, darker thought creeps in.[break][break]

He doesn't know if Silph considers anyone close. He spends time with the Elite Four and Orion knows that Stormy Silph is his sister, but apart from that...[break][break]

It's thrust onto him, now, the weight of responsibility, and it's as if Orion can feel it pressing down upon him. He swallows, thinks. Where did they even begin, with something like this?[break][break]

"We need more info. Where did it happen? Anywhere with surveillence? Any idea of the Pokemon's typing — if it's even a Pokemon at all?"[break][break]

He glances around as if expecting answers to materialize; it's nothing more than a product of scattered thoughts, and a moment later he's sitting at his desk and flutters his fingers over the laptop keyboard. Damn it, he was going to have to look into encryption if he wanted things digital. Who knew the kinds of access these people had? Abandoning technology, he opens a drawer on his desk and jots down a few quick details in code.[break][break]

His breath exits loud. "Is there anyone else we can trust on this? Elite Four?"[break][break]

The tail end of the question is silent: Or are we doing this alone?

It's a rough word in politics, a poisonous word. Trust was turning your back and making it that much easier to slide a knife between your shoulder blades. Trust was dangerous, and yet it's something he refuses to relinquish.[break][break]

He nods. Nervous, with twitchy hands and tense posture, but determined.[break][break]
