The gym leader’s skill showed itself in his partners’ independence. It would be a while until Annie could trust her Pokemon to act of their own accord, but to see such confidence from him… He’d earned a look of surprise, which quickly gave way to mild annoyance. No call-outs meant she had to hazard a guess at the Crobat’s attack. The wide-eyed pause from both of her Pokemon could only mean bad news, but as long as they could still attack, she’d have to figure out the rest later.

Sandstorm, on the other hand, she was very familiar with. Clamp was a member of the budding Sand Squad, and found few greater pleasures in life than going toe to toe with her Tyranitar. Annie knew that the stream wouldn’t faze, let alone damage him, but the same couldn’t be said for Blitz, and it quickly showed. A hailstorm was more up his aisle, which meant the sand had him shielding his eyes and gritting his teeth.

“If that wind didn’t budge him… Clamp, get in there with a Quick Attack!” The Scizor showed no hesitation braving the sands, charging through to give the Hippowdon a proper greeting. An arm swinging down onto his face might do the trick.

“Blitz, Icicle Crash!” If the bat could dodge a single swipe, then maybe a flurry would do better. If nothing else, its berth could help make up for him struggling to see in the sand. The Weavile’s mouth blasted cold air towards Koga, the sparkles within it quickly growing from hailstorms to ice spikes on their way to him.

TL;DR: Clamp and Blitz are hit by Mean Look!

You signed up for a mining job, so confident that you weren’t going to do any work that you didn’t bring anything to help you? No pickaxe or hammer? Not even a Pokemon you could pretend would do the job?”

She wouldn’t go as far as to insult him. Not verbally, anyway. There was a lot that could be said with eyes alone, and Annie’s had always been expressive.

“Quake, release. Go over and help him out.” Claws opened up to reveal the Excadrill’s very sceptical face. He had good reason to question her, especially when Annie remembered the last Pokemon she’d entrusted to Jet. Something told her he’d be a little more careful handling a giant drill than he had been with her Vulpix.

A nod was enough to make Quake obey, springing out of Annie’s arms to meet the other trainer, raising his arms to be picked up like a small child. That was when he would learn that an Excadrill weighed significantly more than a small child… But if Annie had managed to carry the drill without complaint, then surely he could too, right?

“Just tell him when to drill and he’ll break up whatever you’re pointing him at.” Rarely one to slack off on the job, Annie set herself to work collecting the rest of the scattered shards they’d sprayed across the cavern floor. “This job is what’s paying for dinner tonight, for me and my Pokemon. I’m not going to risk losing that just because you didn’t feel like doing some honest work.”

A waterproof one, at that; somebody’d had a bit of extra money. “Not much yet, but that’s alright. We’re being picky, searching for a special guy.”

Behind her, the Raichu zipped back and forth, peering beneath the waves whilst the boy fought for his next catch. Annie knew better than to talk over his fight, and stood and watched instead. As best as she could stand atop a Starmie, anyway. A Lapras was amongst her oldest partners, so a sound-based water beast was familiar territory for her. It was with a faint smile that she compared and contrasted their styles in her head, right until he asked what specifically had brought them there.

“We were around here weeks ago on a hunt, and long story short, I’m sure there’s a sea-dweller out here with Lightning Rod. It’s an ability that redirects electric-type attacks to a Pokemon, and stops them from taking damage from the hit. Really useful power, and even better on a water-type! Problem is, last time I saw it, we were so caught off-guard that it got away, and I don’t even know what Pokemon it was…”

She gestured to her Raichu, who waved to Alec. “That’s where Pancake comes in. One strong electric blast will wreck most water-types, so that’ll narrow it down. Plus, I think I caught a glimpse of it. Red-or-orange and white, and can swim underwater. Could’ve been a Magikarp, could be something else entirely.” With that in mind, it was no surprise that neither of her Pokemon bothered pointing out the Chewtle swimming by. They knew what they were looking for, and the turtle wasn’t it.

[attr="class","athread"]Oddly enough, a rocky golem manifesting in a hidden temple was exactly the kind of subterranean adventure he’d been hoping for. Now, if only somebody could turn off the go-slow power, they’d have a real party going on. Still, even with the disadvantage, he’d been taught better than to turn tail from a few death threats.

Quake was happy to accept the Onix’s invitation, and his Curses gave him a chance to take leaps up the snake’s body, finding his footing atop Kjoll’s head. A cocky growl of thanks was all he’d give in response before they jetted off, closer to the source of the troubles. Any rocks that Kjoll failed to dodge would be met with Metal Claws hoping to cleave through them.

Or at least, you’ve done this enough that not being around has caused problems for you before. I’m gonna go with the second one.” While she spoke, Quake busied himself collecting the shards on the ground into Annie’s crossbody bag.

“It could work. Turn up for a job, stand around, do nothing. Until your partners start complaining. Sure, the first person might be doubted, maybe even ignored… But two, three of them calling you out in their report? That’s gonna raise some eyebrows.”

She beckoned her beast back into her arms. Her body lurched forward as she lifted him off the ground, letting him straighten himself back into a drill before she sought out another vein. As such, she stopped looking at Jet while she spoke. “I’m willing to be the first. Or maybe the second, or the third. Guess we won’t find out how many it’s been until you suddenly stop getting jobs.”

Their reactions dealt a blow to what was meant to be a carefree smile, and after a nervous chuckle, she continued. “But I guess I should be a little more careful. A dead hero’s not much good to anybody. Besides, there’s a lot I’ve got to do before I kick the bucket. Better?” The golden rabbit gave a nod of approval, her scowl softening in the face of an apology. Well, the closest to an apology most people would get out of Annie.

She eyed the speedboat up and down, then did the same to Gemini. The star was a stellar (albeit unorthodox) mount, but in the face of a free ride, she was happy to give it a break from carrying her. “Alright, alright! You’re doing a good job of impressing me, Pokken Rider!” Annie and Zuri climbed aboard the speedboat. “Something tells me this won’t be the last time we help each other either! Maybe we'll have to make a team: Pokken Rider, Pokenger and The Hero That Doesn't Need a Mask!”

Gemini, by far the heaviest of the bunch, could keep up with them without the added load, spinning his second star all the way back to the shore.
