[attr="class","athread"]Her lungs were burning, but that was fine! Of all the kids in in the orphanage, Annie is the best at holding her breath! Mostly because first, second and third place died, but she’d claimed the victory anyway. Still, she wouldn’t say no to some extra air, and so Pokken Rider’s present was met with little resistance.

Zuri stopped giving aid to rush back to Annie, but she only made it halfway before she realised there was a stunning lack of suffocation on Annie’s face. The girl’s thumbs-up told that she could focus on doing the heavy lifting instead. With the trio’s undivided attention, the boulder hardly stood a chance, and the fish were set free before long. That, in turn, meant the party was free to swim back to the surface. Annie waved to the Luvdisc as they departed. In her heart, they waved back.

She broke water, pulled the hair out of her face, took off her air tube and showed the masked man a cheery grin. “Well, I think that went pretty well! Thanks for the air and stuff. I was trying to hold out while Zuri was busy, but I don’t think that worked out as well as I’d hoped…” It was hard for something as rotund as an Azumarill to look stern, but boy, did Zuri try.

Gemini slowed as they circled around him and his… interesting choice of mount. “Not today! Any good trainer’s got to have variety, and I’m looking to add some to mine! There’s one very special Pokemon in particular that I’m looking for…”

As if on cue, a Golduck broke through the waves, announcing its presence to the party as it leapt towards the sky. “Is it you?!” There was only one way to find out. A clicked Pokeball summoned Pancake onto the field. The surfing Raichu had no trouble settling herself a few inches above the water. “Give that one a test.” There were few instances where a Thunderbolt constituted as a test, but either way, it sufficed as a solid blow to the Golduck’s system. They’d had both the sense and the speed to attack before it hit the water, saving the sea-dwellers a nasty wake-up call.

Annie followed suit with a Pokeball just before the body hit the sea; it would be down to either of her psychic-types to return the confirmed capture to her. “…Doesn’t look like it, but still an interesting catch anyway.” She returned her attention to the dragon tamer – or rather, his Snorlax. “I can’t say I’m too surprised that a Snorlax floats. I’m more surprised that you’re getting yours to go anywhere in a hurry.”

[attr="class","athread"]Annie leapt off her Starmie, disappearing beneath the surface for a second. An annoyed yell announced her head breaking water. “Why does it always have to be so cold!?” Violent shakes seemed to stave off incoming shivers as she gave Zuri her orders. “Alright, we’re on the lookout for Luvdisc. Luv-disc. Pink guys, heart-shaped and lots of them.” Her partner only understood about half of that, but half would likely be enough.

Both Annie and Zuri placed a hand on one of Gemini’s frontal points as the masked hero took the plunge. The rabbit rolled up her ears, and the three followed after him.

It was hard for her to stop comparing her ‘suit’ to his, but considering their clear differences in wealth, Annie thought that she’d done pretty well! Fully submerged and in a more natural habitat, Gemini’s second star became a makeshift propeller, pushing the trio further into the ocean. Nothing she had on hand could beat out his beaming eyes, but the light glow of a Starmie’s gem helped them navigate the way well enough.

Zuri provided her trainer with small air bubbles roughly every twelve seconds, and if they ignored her wide-mouthed gasps for the fleeting air, they did a good job of keeping her alive. Even underwater, Azumarill’s hearing was hard to match; before long, she was pointing the pair towards the boulder too, no doubt hearing the muffled cries under and around it.

Once they drew near Annie disembarked, using both hands to order her Pokemon. Both hands pushed outwards was enough for them to understand. Gemini’s Psychic, aided by Zuri’s Helping Hand, could slowly force the boulder upwards. Not fast enough for Annie’s lungs, but progress was being made.

Do you have to jump on the job boards really early to make sure you get a job that justifies spending money on that?” She paused; furrowed her brow. “Maybe that last one was rude. Sorry. I’m going to judge you so hard if you don’t do a good job, though!”

With that, she reached into her nylon crossbody bag. Leaving her valuables in her pocket before she dived was bound to end poorly, after all. A Pokeball was retrieved, and from it, she ushered out a golden Azumarill. Zuri cheered her arrival for the half a second it took for gravity to force her under the waves. She bobbed half her body above water, waiting orders.

“Meet my air tank, and my propeller.” She gestured to Zuri and Gemini in turn - the former was taking deep breathes, preparing for the expedition. “My protection too, if it comes to it... So I guess they’re like metal alloys too! Anyway, where’re we headed from here?”

[attr="class","athread"]A lack of money was good, Annie occasionally told herself. It meant learning to improvise. Make the most of what she had, even when what she had was very little. It had made her a better person. And yet, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealously, irritation, dismay, all at the same time, as she came to a halt beside Tobias.

Where he’d let money solve his problems, she’d used her Pokemon. Her ‘speedboat’ was a blue Starmie, half-submerged in the water while she stood on its back, keeping one arm on its topmost star. Her swimming suit was whichever one of her three outfits needed a wash anyway – the tracksuit in that case. Her air tank was… nowhere to be seen, but it was safe to assume that she’d thought that far ahead. Probably. Hopefully.

“Another one? Do all of you masked superhero guys have meetings or something? Is that suit any good for diving? Wouldn’t metal weigh you down? Is it uncomfortable? It looks uncomfortable, but also kinda cool.” The Starmie was silent, its gem oscillating between blue and purple. A flash of yellow seemed to serve as a reminder. “Oh! And I’m Annie. Annie Mei. I guess, in a way, I’m a junior hero for hire! That’s basically what people that do these jobs are, right?”

[attr="class","athread"]Asking a gym leader to find new Pokemon in the routes surrounding his domain hadn’t been enough of a challenge, and if there was one thing Annie enjoyed, it was a bit of risk. Harmless fun, in her eyes, that kept her feeling on top of her game. That was why, knowing that her Lapras would be happy to act as a ferry and that her Wailmer would happily bob atop the water, she’d chosen a Starmie as her mount for the day.

Starmie were hard enough to decipher without the strange colourings of Annie’s catch, so it was hard to tell how it felt about being made into a living surfboard. She stood on the back of her half-submerged sea star as it propelled them across the ocean, one hand clinging to the topmost star whilst the other felt the wind whip past it.

Was it the most practical seafarer? Absolutely not. Was it the most fun? Annie’s face said yes.

“Where are all the water guys hiding? I did not come this far out and get half of my outfits wet to go home empty handed!”

A cocky smirk showed itself at the boy’s faith in his Pokemon. “That’s what I like to hear. Me, I think this’ll be good training for me and Cel, but I’m sure she’d handle it herself.” Her steed threw her head around, letting her mane flourish. “Good luck to us both, then! Here’s hoping that it doesn’t get too ugly.”

She gestured for Celeste to fall into line. “Alright, you all know the rules. There are no rules, as long as your Pokemon’s feet stay against a surface.” Silence was taken as confirmation. “On your marks. Get set. G-“

The cave descended into chaos in the blink of an eye. Pokemon roared and hissed and cried as they burst into action. A flash of light threatened to blind the racers; if any of them could spare a glance to the side, they’d see that the Manectric has immediately tumbled into a crashing halt.

That would mean turning their attention away from the clouds of smog rolling in to smother them. Like an ethereal cloak draped over her horn, Celeste’s Pastel Veil parted the poison from her and her allies. The same couldn’t be said for the Weavile rushing dangerously close to Absol as they neared the first turn, claws and fangs bared.

Then again, if he had already heard rumours of her strength, their display might not have been a surprise. For several minutes they shattered rocks and glittering shards. She lowered his body close to the ground and asked: “You wanna take five?” A muffled grunt of confirmation told Annie to set her partner does; he released his stance and plopped his bottom onto the cavern floor. No doubt it was damp, and probably cold, but members of the Sandstorm Squad were a sturdy bunch.

The trainer took time out to shake life into an arm, stare at the makings of a bounty on the ground… And set an unamused stare on Jet. “I don’t see why you came all the way down here to sit around and do nothing. If you weren’t even going to pretend to do the job, couldn’t you have done that at home?”

[attr="class","athread"]Not quite the words she’d hoped to hear. That slight frown made itself at home again. The issue seemed to be closer to the woman’s heart than she’d realised, so she let her speak her piece. To think Annie had thought she’d forgotten.

Silence followed her speech, if only for a second. “Er… You’re the one getting worked up over it. You’re like a Pokemon right now, hurting yourself in confusion. I read that you’re supposed to take deep breaths at times like these. Come on, with me!” Annie made a show of deeply inhaling; Trixie immediately dropped a half-eaten poffin to imitate her trainer. They got all of three breaths in until the act tired the trainer – and the bell rang to change up the game.

“You’ll keep it up in your own time, right? Take some time to get your head all clear. I gotta beat you, but I wouldn’t want to do it when you’re seeing red over something else! At least, not without trying to chill you out.” The finger tapped against her cheek, and her eyes briefly widened in realization. “Which I just did, so… Next week, right? Or this week, if it's better for you. I don’t have a phone, so I’ll hit up those League guys to get in touch. Make sure you rest up before our big fight!”

[attr="class","athread"]There was a reason that Excadrill were known as the Drill Kings, and he’d never waste a reason to show it. Annie knew as much. Annie also knew that an underwater cave was one of the worst places to start making tunnels in, and drowning leagues below the earth was not how she intended to leave the world.

That was how the Excadrill had been reduced to a mere weapon, loosely tucked under Annie’s arm. His straightened body was body tense and still, awaiting a command from her. Once she’d raised his body to an intriguing vein, she called “Drill!” and he span to life, throwing shards of stones to the sides as he tore out their treasure.

How had Jet chosen to handle the situation? She didn’t knew, and she wasn’t sure that she cared, after his last showing.
