She placed a Soft-Boiled egg atop the head of a half-conscious trainer. Her creation’s energy melted off it, trickling down his body to seek out and heal his injuries. A faint smile from a man stripped of his pain prompted overjoyed cheers from his aide. She returned the egg to her pouch, giving it a chance to recharge as she sought out her next new friend….

Or rather, it sought her out. A Falinks had almost made it to her side beside the pack toppled over, their pain clear in a dozen eyes. They wiped the smile clean off Fortuna’s face, if only for the second it took for her to cast Heal Pulse on them. Six pairs of legs wriggled themselves upright, but Fortuna only stayed long enough to wish them well, and them hurry off to soothe a crying Squirtle’s words. In time, they would all be healed and eager to celebrate, but until then there were too many wounded for her to dwell on any one for long.

An unseen foe set her Pokemon alight, drawing out Annie’s frown mere seconds into the match. She could hazard a guess at what move would follow, seeing as Glimmer knew it herself, but she couldn’t stop the attack if they couldn’t even see its caste-

A robotic command widened her eyes. “Blitz, cover!” All too eager to show how he’d earned his name, the Weavile ran and dived to take the ‘hit’ for his ally. Patience had paid off for them; he regained his footing, unaffected. Annie knew better than to give the Aurorus a second chance.

“Brick Break on Big Blue.” He took off again, claws charged with white energy as he ran to the dinosaur. While he moved to smash through its defences, Annie set her gaze on Glimmer again. If they couldn’t see the enemy, then there was only one move to use. “If we’re starting a light show, then... Glimmer, Dazzling Gleam on your side!”

The flames, having died down to persistent embers upon her body, couldn’t stop her from returning fire. Flickers of light heralded a blinding blast of light expanding from her body. Rainbow bolts shot out from it, seeking to slam into whatever hid in the hailstorm. It wouldn’t stretch as far as to reach Blitz (and the Aurorus by extension), as per the trainer’s command, but if the Froslass was hiding elsewhere…

The makings of a frown showed themselves, more confused than upset or annoyed. “The excuses don’t really change that he still started a fight over it, you know. Just because you think he had a good reason doesn’t mean he doesn’t do it. Even I know that. If anything, it sounds a lot like you know he messed up, but you can’t bring yourself to say it out loud.” A stray finger scratched at the side of her face. “That’s alright, though. I already said that I forgive you – conditionally -, and going back on my word isn’t the Annie Mei Way.”

Annie gestured for the woman to wait; no need for her to get too excited, after all. “Con-dish-eon-allie. I’ve got a challenge for you. Internet says you’re one of the E4 now, right? So I’ve got to beat your guys sometime soon. How about it?” A smirk showed itself – as small as it was, she seemed to think that it’d have reason to grow very soon.

Fortunately, Frankie was long past attempting to murder strangers. Unfortunately, it wasn’t above beating them senseless. The Munna was a mere second from learning that little factoid the hard way, as Frankie stalked its way into her shadow. It didn’t bother with a warning, instead choosing to introduce itself with an X-Scissor to the intruder’s back. Once she was knocked out, Frankie got to work, bobbing his head against the body until it had rolled away from Annie’s property.

Annie responded to any and all advanced in the same way. She mimicked a steed too proud for her own good, raising her head up high and closing her eyes. It wasn’t until the sixth man – well, boy – arrived that she stopped rearing. A glance at him told that he couldn’t have been much older than herself, but she knew better than to take age as an indication of skill. Instead one hand waved to him, while the other beckoned him over.

“I’ll forgive the lateness, but only if we win! Luckily, my Celeste has this in the bag. Probably. Maybe.” Her beast huffed at the sound of doubt. “Kidding! Mostly. It’ll be fiiiiine.” A gentle hand stroked her mount into a calmer state. “Or maybe you and Hades might take the race. Who knows?” A snort from Celeste suggested that she thought she knew.

“You gotta do what your heart tells you, my dude! If this is anything like the street legal races, this whole thing won’t last more than like, twenty seconds. There’s no way you’re keeping up with your Pokemon unless you’re on him, but if you feel like you’ll do better shouting orders from over here, then go for it. Just make sure you keep an eye on the competition. There’s probably a good reason why these guys aren’t leg-” A gruff voice cut her off – their starter, and the only non-participant present. “Get in line! The race is about to start.”

Clasped hands rested atop the table, and she mulled over how best to jog the woman’s mind. “You don’t remember Slateport? New Year’s? We all ran around, almost dying a bunch to save the city. Then your friend jumped my Pokemon over a shoe, and you blamed me for, I don’t know. Talking back? It wasn’t very clear. Partly because I try not to think about it. Probably because it didn’t make much sense.” The whole night had been a whirlwind, even without the fights breaking out right after. Nobody could be blamed for avoiding dwelling on its events.

“But that’s alright, because I’ve just decided to forgive you. Conditionally.” She raised a brow, waiting to see if her terms would be entertained. Trixie was entirely oblivious to their talk, still gorging herself on stolen snacks.

The Dragonite fell. Cairo stared. So did Annie, wide-eyed and ready for her to regain her footing. Relaxing herself took an age, as she realised a second wind wouldn’t be coming that day. “…We did it.” It was less of an exclamation and more of a relieved sigh. Cairo shared the same sentiment in his own way. He collapsed onto his knees, but rather than faint, he calmly leaned backwards and leaned on his back. Heavy breaths left him, even as his trainer approached.

“Cairo.” He grunted. “You did great, you know.” He managed a single syllable of agreement. “Do you need a minute?” He barely nodded. Annie reached down to pat his head before she walked over to the gym leader.

Shock, surprise and relief had numbed the Annie he knew, but with every step a little more seemed to return to her. He spoke his words without interruption, and then, finally, she revealed the source of her repose.

“That’s the fourth one.” A surprisingly calm declaration hung in the air for a few seconds, allowing it to sink in for them both. She’d become one of a handful of trainers in the region capable of challenging the Elite Four, and perhaps the first in quite some time to exercise that right. “Next… I keep fighting. Four more battles, and then I’m Hoenn’s champion.” Her hands settled themselves on her hips and she brought on a daring smile.

“That means the next time you fight me, I’ll be even stronger! Ready with some dragon hunters, too.” She retrieved her badge, taking a few moments to appreciate her prize. An impressed whistle left her as she pocketed her reward.

“Alright!” A bit more of her trademark energy slipped into her voice as she asserted herself. “It’s Annie Mei tradition to take something extra from each gym leader. Whether it’s advice, cash, food, a training tip, or an autograph, something to remember this by would be great!”

It was almost too close to be comfortable. Another attack that couldn’t be dodged slammed into Cairo. Whether it was strong enough or he was weak enough was anybody’s guess, for the end result was the same. He was forced back, his feet leaving the ground for a few frightening moments. Even when he planted them on solid footing, the attack sent him skidding back to the arena’s edges. He came to a stop, forced onto one knee. Trembling knees threatened to give way.

Annie was silent, watching, waiting. She’d done well to hide the nerves creeping in her mind, but seeing her Pokemon struggle, knowing how far a loss would set them back… It made it hard not to look worried. “Cairo-“ she began, concern in her tone, but the frustrated bark of her comrade cut her off. Quivering legs forced themselves to stand; pained eyes fixed themselves on the target. He was almost as stubborn as his trainer, and they both knew the stakes. Still, he had only been saved by the gym’s insistence on only using moves his kind resisted. Which was most of them, to be fair, and part of the reason why he’d been chosen. The Sandstorm Squad was a sturdy bunch.

Annie closed her eyes, letting out a breath she hadn’t realised she was holding. “Alright. You heard him; let’s end this fight. Vacuum Wave!” He didn't need to be shown how it was done, but Annie found herself punching nothing anyway. A glowing paw punched the air, but its energy dissipated as he threw the swing. There was but an instant for the others to assume his attack had failed before it rushed forward; a horizontal tornado rushing to greet Veda.

TL;DR:

She had more important things to do, like pretend they were there for more than free food. The pair stayed at their table, while their next ‘date’ arrived. Which one of Hoenn’s wonderful trainers would she me-

“I want a redraw.” Annie had long since mastered the art of quick face changes, as demonstrated by a swift switch from joyous to deadpan. She used to like the woman that approached, and not just because she looked like an older version of herself. Too much had changed that night in Slateport – her view of the lady included. She couldn’t even bake, for goodness’ sake.

[attr="class","athread"]She reached up, gently patting the space where its cheek would have been. “Sure did try, didn’t you buddy!” No response, but that didn’t seem to surprise her. “More like a warning scare than anything. You know, the way a Mimikyu will get all funky if you try to lift its disguise. I’ll keep it in mind in case it ever changes its mind.”

Talk of an early demise brought her pause, and a little more worry than before creeped its way onto her face. “Don’t worry,” she said a few seconds too late. “I… keep a close eye on my big beastie. If anything serious happens, you bet I’ll find some help. That’s why I’m here, right?” Another hollow chuckle; another awkward pause. She slipped her hands into her pockets, trying to shake her head free of the doubts once again. Why wouldn’t they budge?

“…Yeah. Let’s just go make sure it’s alright now.”

Few trainers were expected to stumble into the cave in the dead of night, and any wild Pokemon would know better than to interfere with the makeshift racetrack. That made the cavern as good as place as any for what promised to be a few minutes of chaos.

Six trainers were lined up to race that night, each pair representing one of Hoenn’s wannabe racing kings. The Blitz Bolts were there, represented by a Manectric, Luxray and their trainers. Nightshade had sent a Weavile and Salazzle as their bid, though their trainers were already bickering about their strategy.

And then there was Annie. At least five years younger than each of the other participants, but no less familiar with getting her hands in shady business. If her size and age didn’t catch stray eyes, then maybe her Galarian Rapidash would. Or the fact that she had chosen to ride her racer. Or that she seemed to be without a partner, though she’d insist to anybody that asked that they were on their way. Hopefully.

Truthfully, she had no clue. The other racer was likely in the same boat as her – a League-sponsored plant in need of some fast cash. Racing wasn’t exactly her specialty, but she knew few Pokemon that could outdo Celeste in a race, and they’d spent plenty of time training together in the Safari Zone. What was the worst that could happen, besides everything?

The tables had turned, even if it had cost Cairo another rough blow. Had she made her team up of anything other than steel-types, the battle might have already been over. Even then, the damage was starting to show on her fighter’s face, which couldn’t bode well. They didn’t have long – but thanks to the poison, neither did the enemy.

“Back to me, Cairo!” He sprang from the scene, landing half a dozen feet away from the Dragonite. From there, he ran the rest of the way back to ‘their’ side of the field, staring down the foe. “We’ll see how they like it,” she muttered, shortly before committing to: “Aura Sphere!”

The space between the canine’s palms came to house a dark blue ball of chi. Not the most effective move in their circumstance, but what it lacked in power it more than made up for in accuracy. Fired from the beast’s paws, the sphere seemed set to home in on its target; whittle his health down a little more, even in the face of another burst of speed. Annie kept her voice low as she gave her last hope his orders. “You’re on defense now, buddy. As long as we can run out the clock…”
