Finally, a proper handshake without pretences. Annie’s smile grew as he gave in… And kept frowning as he held it for much longer than she considered comfortable. The grin slowly shrank as she realised that he had no intention of giving her an answer. The silence was like an especially sour Skittle to her, if her puckered lips were anything to go by. Even Pancake questioned the scene from across the field, calling to the two to make sure they were still with her.

It fell to Annie to overcome the mightiest challenge yet, after a painful half-minute of endurance. “I understand. ‘Sometimes, silence says a thousand words.’ Powerful advice, Mister Guy. I’ll do my best to keep it in mind,” she declared, already knowing that was far from the truth. “I’ll take your words of wisdom and be on my way!” She freed herself from his grip. There was a spring in her step as she returned to her Raichu’s side – partly because of her victory, but mostly because she was glad to be out of the eternal handshake. “Come on, Pancake! We’ve gotta take a trip to the supermarket! We’ll buy some batter, some oil… Ooo, you should find some berries for us! And we’ll need syrup. I think I have the money for that, and if not, we deserve it anyway!” Ken wouldn’t hear an end to her words, so much as they slowly faded into nothing as she left the way she came.

Her frozen face is no less awkward as she’s awarded the badge. After a few seconds of expectation, she let out a nervous chuckle. “I’m glad you’re so eager to give me the badge, but that was for a handshake, dummy.” The badge is unceremoniously shoved into her tracksuit’s pocket, and the hand is offered again, giving him one more chance to get it right.

“Don’t look so down! Or maybe that’s just how your face is. I don’t think you’ve cracked a smile once since I got here… Anyway, you did good; I just did better. And that should linger over you, fellow weatherman! Next time, I expect you to beat me, and then I can come back and beat you again! We’ll make each other better.”

With all the positivity out of the way, she cleared her throat, placed her hands on her hips, and announced: “Now, it’s Annie Mei tradition to take something extra from every defeated gym leader! I accept advice, cash, an autograph, your favourite training spot, a charitable donation to me in my name, or a cloak. You have a cool cloak. It’d make a good blanket, so I’m mainly hoping for that.”

The canine was down, and it took Annie a few seconds to realise he wouldn’t be getting up. Her lips widened into an all-out grin. “Wow, we nailed it! Not a bad match, if I must say so myself.” Pancake swivelled around on her board, zipping past the gym leader and his fallen friend, into Annie’s open arms. “Oh, you’re all wet but I don’t care! You did really well with that Thu- Ow!” The Raichu had nuzzled her face, forgetting for the third time that week that her cheeks were also lightning sacs. Annie reared her head back, giving her partner a stern stare. It wouldn’t last. “Don’t embarrass me in front of the gym leader, alright?” Even as she spoke, her face gave way to the smile’s return.

“We’ll talk later. Pancakes for dinner.” The mouse squealed and flipped in the air as Annie set off, walking across a drenched battlefield to meet Ken. “Having one Pokemon carry another is a really cool way to have them cover each other’s weaknesses! I wish I’d thought of that. Maybe I’ll have to next time. That’s the fun of finding another weather trainer – you see all kinds of new ideas!” She offered a handshake to the man.

It was a plan well-executed, but at what cost? Annie hadn’t counted on the gym leader using friendly fire – an assumption that would cost her dearly. The Hurricane was a heavy blow under any circumstance. Combined with the Thunder moments before, it was a knockout blow. “…Huh.” What should have been a victory cheer from the trainer was diminished to mild surprise… And then amusement.

“Alright, alright, you’re taking me seriously! Sorry you had to take that, Rudi, but you did great!” The dancer lay splayed out against the ground, barely able to groan in response before she was returned to her ball. That left the Raichu, blown aside by the Hurricane, and then rocked by a mighty bolt. She’d managed to stay atop her tail through it all, the sheer power of the attacks balanced by her resistance to them, but they’d managed to wipe the smile off her face. Annie’s had only grown.

“Think you can catch a wave up here?” A daring “Chu” and a pair of raised stubs heralded water rising from beneath the plateau, curling and growing into a tidal wave as it rushed to embrace the mouse. Not that that worried her. A psychically-charged jump propelled her atop the wave, her tail acting as her surfboard as she spun to face the Jolteon. Under her command, the water’s wrath crashed down on the enemy, the mouse coming to hover inches off the ground a few feet behind her target. "Gotta make the most of good weather while it lasts."

A defensive strategy was an annoying one in Annie’s eyes, but it was a strategy nonetheless. One that the spikes were supposed to counter, and one that visibly irked her to see succeed. Still, it had been a long time since Annie had lost her cool in a battle. If the threat of death in Slateport hadn’t done the trick, then she could survive a few more rounds with Alec… Right?

“Fine,” she grumbled. She bided her time until the dance slowed before barking her next order. “Extreme Speed! Spike that dragon!” At that distance, either of them using the move could barely be distinguished. One moment the Lucario was awaiting orders, and then it was in the air, intent on slamming its body into Veda’s on his way back down to earth. In essence, it was the same trick Bastion had attempted earlier in the fight, and one that Annie must have taught to most of her team to ensure that the Toxic Spikes could get to work.

Protect. That was the second gym leader in a row that had started the battle with Annie’s favourite least favourite attack. “Why do the top dogs of Hoenn love using the worst thing to happen to competiti- You know what? Whatever. We’ve got this.” She wasn't about to let that move get abused again If there was one thing she’d learned from too many infuriating encounters with the move, it was that it offered a brief window of opportunity after each use.

“Rudi?” The Ludicolo’s dance had been stiffened by the blast, but it seemed to insist on showing its moves regardless. That was enough to tell Annie that she had fight left in her, to say nothing of what she could steal. “Get in there with a Knock Off!” For such a shaggy, bulky blob of a Pokemon, the dancer didn’t give the aura of a speedster… Mostly because it wasn’t. When it abandoned the rhythm to charge at the enemy, it became clear that it wasn’t quite a slowpoke either. Could it match a Jolteon? Almost definitely not. But a Pelipper weighed down by a Jolteon? They’d find out. If she managed to cross the distance in time, she’d leap up and smack the Lightning Pokemon with a glowing palm – and maybe even throw him off his steed…

Making the opening his partner needed. “Who says lightning doesn’t strike twice? Pancake, one more time!” The clouds above cackled and roared, giving but a brief warning before the third beam of the match was unleashed. Would it be the first of Annie’s that met its mark, the Pelipper?

[attr="class","athread"]Too much walking, not enough digging. That was to say, no amount of excavation would be enough for an Excadrill promised a subterranean adventure. He managed to contain himself until the rock snakes made the beginnings of a tunnel. The mole made his way to the front of the party, slapped his claws together and gave the earth ahead a cocky smirk. As he straightened his body, transforming into a living tool, Quake seemed set to show the pack why he’d been deemed the Drill King.

At least, that was the plan. In two seconds, he’d carved through a dozen feet of soil, but before he could reach his stride, the Trick Room brought his fun to an abrupt end. They were fortunate that his trog of a u-turn didn’t trigger a cave-in, or perhaps he’d done enough digging to know how to stay safe. When he surfaced, it was with a very unamused glare, his eyes searching for whoever had decided to mess with his job.

[attr="class","athread"]She shouldn’t have been in Slateport. The attack wore heavily on her mind, even if she refused to let it show. If anything, forcing on a brave face could was bound to hurt her in the long run, but there always seemed to be something more important than learning to say what scared her.

Such as on her last day in the city, which she’d spent lending her healers to the city’s hospital. Much like the Comfey, the park was her last stop in Slateport, and they had both volunteered their aid to its people. Their kinship wasn’t lost on the girl. That, and the niggling sensation that echoes of the night wandered the city (tainers she barely remembered seeing, Alexei Ivanov included) and she found herself weaker than she’d felt in a good week. Perhaps she could show some of that weakness. Just for a moment.

Annie lowered herself onto one knee in front of the gathering, closed her eyes, and muttered a few words of thanks. It was the closest to prayer that anybody would get out of her, and it barely lasted seconds. If one of the wreaths chose to stay by her side after the display, she’d warm up to idea of having another happy helper in her Camp, and offer it a Pokeball to call home.

Yeah, that was always really weird to me. You guys lived in a world without Bidoof for so long. That sounds pretty rough to me. I’m glad your dad got you a cool Pokemon, but you probably don’t have to whisper about it anymore. It’s not like I’m going to take it away, right?” She leaned back into her seat, her smile as strong as ever. Old crimes, it seemed, didn’t bother her that much.

The bell rang, summoning them to another table. Annie’s eyes widened again, if only for a second. “Already? Alright, alright, quickly! Tell me your backstory, and it better not be tragic!” Trixie punctuated the demand with a cheer, raising her stubs up again. There was a good chance that the cotton ball took any show of energy as a cue to get excited. Maybe the Yungoos would jump in, or show anything other than its resting predator stare.

A slap from a two hundred kilo dragon had to hurt, even if the typing wasn’t in the foe’s favour. Cairo was too stubborn to let it show, but knowing that didn’t ease Annie’s woes much. She knew the unspoken tells – the feet spread a little too far apart, the clenched fists eager for vengeance, the raised sensors on his head, ready to charge another aura attack.

Well, if that was what he wanted, who was she to deny him the chance? A trainer that wanted to win, that was what. If the Pokemon was flying, and hadn’t fallen victim to the Toxic Spikes, then an annoying chunk of Cairo’s moves would be weak against it. A show of his powers would have to wait for another day. “It has to be me,” she declared. “I’m on a strict time limit, so we can’t wait around for a rematch! If you’d like to forfeit now and give me the badge, that’d be great, but if not…” Then he was standing in the way of a new home. The recognition she craved, and wealth that could bring about a life of comfort. An end to nights of instant noodles and day-old bread. Like hell she was going to risk that on a bad move, even if it meant a little repetition.

“Round two, Cairo! One more Metal Claw, and don’t hold back!” Closed paws on the canine gave way to glowing white extensions, shaped into claws atop his limbs. He’d learned from the Excadrill, from the looks of it, for the claws were in its image. Not that he left much time for them to admire his work; as soon as they had formed, he aimed to strike the dragon down with them.

The Yungoos’ stare, it seemed, would go unacknowledged for a little longer.

Then came the million-dollar question. He’d had a good point – knowing what she’d made would go a long way to understanding how it functioned. On the other hand, giving up that information meant that her Frankenstein was well on its way to becoming the next Porygon, and something about that unsettled her. Both the idea of a mass-produced killing machine, and a scientist that hadn’t completely earned her trust being able to recreate it, thanks to her.

“…It might take me a while to dig that up,” she lied. “I thought that something like that should stay hidden, but I know where it is. Roughly. But yeah, let’s check the vitals first. See how it’s holding up, and if there’s anything we can get out of that.”
