[attr="class","athread"]The rest of the party arrived – her quiet friend and two old men rounding out the cast. As usual, she was the youngest, and with her apparent insistence of wearing a tracksuit everywhere (colour-coordinated with her Zoroark, no less), she could make an unassuming first impression. And yet, there was not a trace of doubt in her eyes, or even her usual joy. When she spoke, it wasn’t with her usual foolhardy smirk, but experience and conviction.

“I can get the surveillance and the lights.” A Pokeball withdrawn; a Pokemon unleashed. The Joltik materialised on the back of her hand, and seemed content to stay there as she gestured her way through the talk. “Meet Arachnode. Small, likes tight spaces, very eager to suck the power out of anything nearby, as I’ve learned the hard way.” The bug chirped his pride. “Wasn’t a compliment.” He did it twice more. Annie’s face held halfway between a stern stare and a restrained smile.

“Anyway, if they’ve got a generator down there, he’ll find it and kill it… But that’ll mean the rest of us will be running blind. I’ve got guys that will be fine in the dark, but I wouldn’t want to spring that on you guys without knowing that you’re prepared for it.” Her gaze fell to her Joltik, who had spent his time hungrily staring down the Salamence. She raised one eyebrow, then both at once.

“Arach brings up a good point, even if I’m sure that wasn’t what he was going for. A lab’s going to be deep inside that tunnel, right? Not exactly spacious. Are you guys sure we should be going in with giant dragons, especially when we’re not looking for a big fight?” And yet, her Zoroark remained, quietly watching behind her.

The lady unleash'd one of those folk – a flaming canine yond wast quick to eye the food those gents w're being did deny. Hunteth'r did charge, sinking fi'ry fangs into the escavali'r until t hadst to stand ho to f'rce that gent off. Yond gaveth his traineth'r the chance to throweth h'r pokeball, though the lady didn’t seemeth to careth about the capture. Removing that gent from their planeth f'r a moment simply gaveth h'r a chance to reclaim h'r food.

The trouble is trying to figure out which is and isn’t.” Sometimes they made it painfully clear, as proven by the electric orb shooting out of the water. The Lanturn’s head breached the surface to watch her attack barely miss the bird above – long enough for Annie to set wide eyes on her.

“It’s not red, but we’ll take it! Pancake, give us an opening!” The Raichu had recovered enough to land Psychic on the fish, throwing her out of her element and towards the skies. “Gem, Swift.” Annie grabbed hold of the star as it tilted its body, exposing its gem so that it could launch golden facsimiles of itself. comrade’s attack gave the Starmie a chance to Analyse the situation, ensuring that every star would meet its mark, pelting the Lanturn into submission. A Pokeball ended the volley, claimed by Pancake’s second Psychic to return it to Annie’s hand.

“You’re describing a Noivern, right? My Ekko just evolved into one last week. I’m glad that he’s out of his bitey phase, but he’s gotten real vicious, even by dragon standards…” She dared to release her hold on the star to fold her arms. “I don’t know how you put up with that full-time. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of dragon-types, but I like the variety other types throw in too. I won’t stop you from catching one, though.”

[attr="class","athread"]Annie shrugged, biting back a comment. She spent a few more seconds in silence once his Pokemon were unleashed. A Kommo-o was a familiar sight - thanks to Django she knew at least some of what to expect there. The Smeargle was a wildcard, but if she had to guess, it would be the nuisance of the pair. Her hands shuffled around in her pockets until she found her preferred pair, summoning them onto the field.

Comfey and Emboar were her choices, the latter distinguished by a blue-black body and lilac flames. “I hope this can be fun, at least.” She didn’t sound hopeful. For what it was worth, her Pokemon’s presence had loosened her face a little. “Wildfire, Leia, let’s make this one to remember, alright?” Neither hesitated in nodding; they were facing forward, but Annie knew determination was plastered on their faces. Her spirit was more subdued, masked behind her obvious distaste for the man, but the fire was there nonetheless.

[attr="class","athread"]The rustle of leaves could easily be mistaken for wild Pokemon exploring, and yet, it was the only warning of Annie’s arrival. She didn’t walk in so much as she appeared beside the gym leader, flanked by a Zoroark whose glow was rapidly fading. “Yo.” Trainer and Pokemon raised a hand in greeting, in perfect synchronization. They’d ben in each other’s company for much too long.

“I think I’ve got a good team for the job,” she continued without missing a beat. Hopefully she hadn’t frightened him too much. “A scout, a support. Kit here’s really good at sneaking around.” The Zoroark flashed a smirk, uncannily close to the one often seen on his trainer’s face. “I figure that if we’re planning to catch a bunch of labcoats off-guard, I didn’t need to bring a bunch of hard-hitters… But let’s see who and what we’ve got to work with and plan something out from there.”

The girl had barely cracked a smile since they’d arrived. Maybe Pokemon cruelty struck a nerve. Perhaps lingering guilt from her own experiments with the beasts had dulled her mood. That, or she’d taken a gamble on some old sushi and lost. Again.

[attr="class","athread"]A raised eyebrow with a dull stare told that she wasn’t buying a word of his defence. Somebody that hadn’t so much as lifted a finger before she’d opened her mouth didn’t strike her as the kind to work hard, especially when nobody was looking. Even poking holes in his argument seemed to beneath her; the most he’d earn was an eye roll.

She let Quake go anyway, trusting – hoping – that Jet was smart enough not to repeat his mistreatment. Her Vulpix had been small, hesitant to act and too kind for him to handle. Quake was at least twenty-five percent sharp metal, and fifty percent more likely to turn his blades on the man if he felt threatened. Surely, the boy knew better than to antagonise that… Right?

Wrong.

He sunk to new lows, found new ways to surprise her. It showed on her face, in the surprise in the air. The drill in his arms sent quakes through his body, even though there was nothing for it to work its way through. Perhaps it would find something to slice through, softer than the cave wall. More likely to scream, too.

Annie, on the other hand, looked just short of furious… for a second. She tried to temper her emotions, remind herself that he wasn’t worth it. It wasn’t working. It rarely did. She was all too used to strangers brushing off her struggles, but for anybody to have the audacity to lash out at her for trying to survive… He’d managed to strike a nerve.

“I’m sorry that my homelessness is uncomfortable for you. Tell you what, why don’t I just wander off-“ A pair of fingers walked along the air. “Out into the ocean, and go drown myself now? That’s what you’d prefer, right? Out of sight, out of mind?” The drill sprang open. Hopefully Jet was quick to move, because the Excadrill made no effort to mind his claws as he freed himself. He returned to Annie’s side just as she flipped the bird. “Eat a dick, dude. I wish I could go back to the time when I didn’t know you.”

She stormed off, deeper into the cavern. She still had a job to do, but there was no reason why they needed to be together to do it, especially when he wouldn’t even try. With Quake following close behind, giving her quiet and concerned questions, all that was left were the paltry scraps of shards she hadn’t picked up in time.

[attr="class","athread"]Annie nodded, several times in a row. “I try to keep a lot of interesting beasties around me,” she said, once he’d finished claiming another Pokemon. “Helps keep me on my toes. It’s why I’m out here looking for a special something, and why I’ve got lovelies like Gemini-“ She gestured to her blue Starmie. “And Panc-“ She turned back to eye her Raichu, who was staring back at her with wide-eyed horror. The mouse’s eyes slowly dragged themselves towards her latest nightmare – a sea slug crawling up the side of her body.

Gemini was silent, as always. Annie sniggered. Pancake looked about ready to burst into tears. Her stubs reached out to push the Shellos off, to no avail – he’d glued himself to her, and seemed quite amused by the effort. “I didn’t think that you got scared by sticky guys. Then again, that’d explain why you and Escargoo keep fighting. Anyway, Gem, would you give her a hand?” The Raichu could have just as easily used Psychic to pull the slug away, but in her fright it was left to it to help her out. A surprised Shellos found itself floating in the air, over and atop Annie’s awaiting arm.

“I bet a Pokemon brave enough to crawl up onto strangers is something special too, right?” He had no idea what she was saying, but he smiled anyway. “How about it, little dude? Would you like to join the crew?” Her free arm went for a Pokeball and, after a few seconds of waiting, pressed it against his body. Pancake did not look pleased; Gemini nudged himself a few feet forward, so Annie could console her with pats on the head.

“Anyway, of course! Feel free to help. Everything gets done faster when you’ve got a buddy, and if not, it at least feels faster.”

[attr="class","athread"]The air itself seemed charged, as if warning them of grave danger. The glow poking out of the rocks was either a very excited Ampharos or there was bad news waiting behind the new wall. As tempting as it was to drill straight through, he rather liked living.

He started calling out for them to make and take cover, fast. Where the Onix stopped and showed hesitation, Quake knew exactly what to do: what he did best. He fell before the snake’s eyes on his way, swan diving into a drill that would pierce the earth. If the Trick Room would allow it, he’d spin through the ground to make his hole; if not, his claws could do the job. Either way he started his Dig, moving below the surface before Kjoll’s tail could swipe him aside, and going further still until the two – maybe three – lay out of harm’s way.

And then, a little further still. In the absence of a cover for the hole, Quake came to a rest in a little alcove beneath the Onix. If either one of them was going to take the brunt of the blast, he hoped they’d both agree that the snake had better odds. As long as the ground didn’t give way, the snake wouldn’t crush him… Right?

The moments before a battle were usually filled with introductions, cheery banter, overconfident promises and the like… But he’d be spared the small talk. Their meeting wasn’t a fun challenge with a trainer she’d been excited to test, it was an obligatory stepping stone to her next goal. If there were to be any niceties on the battlefield, it would be up to him to start them.

At least the silence meant she couldn’t voice her nerves, and focus on keeping them off her face. Confidence was her middle name, but considering how few trainers made it as far as she had… Even she knew that a win would be tough to pull off. Not that she’d ever admit it to him. All he got was a stare while she waited for him to declare the battle’s start.
