Bailey had taken the chance to catch her breath, working to unfold bandages from their thin paper packaging.[break][break]

Her hike had left its mark; angry and red were the back of her ankles, where she had been plastering bandages to suppress the blisters. She should have done better research—the map had made the journey seem so short. She had expected it to be a pleasant stroll, not a full trek through the red rock of her home.[break][break]

“Holy shit, Smalls,” she breathed as she placed another layer of protection to her already shredded skin, knowing that she was already past the point of return. “My feet are fucking killing me.”[break][break]

Malpais greeted her with its vibrancy; reds stacked in layers that composed the plate of earth that stretched before her.[break][break]

Paths had been narrow, almost harrowing, and she only breathed with relief when she realized that there was no longer a risk of sliding into the crags.[break][break]

“Smalls? You hear me?” She glanced up, surprised to see that her Spoink had departed from her side. She followed his bouncing shape, looking up from his misshapen pearl to the sphere that dwarfed it; the marks of an ancient construct unfamiliar as she closed the distance.[break][break]

The red ran familiar, and she could sense that familiarity just from a simple glance. “Woah... is this the same stuff as your pearl? How'd you know this was here?”[break][break]

There was just one problem. It looked like it was embedded into the rock.[break][break]

“Uhhh... I think this "pearl" won't be easy to get,” and something in the distortion of her reflection made her draw close; hand pressed to the surface of the smooth crystal in an attempt to brush away the accumulation of dust. Could it come loose?[break][break]

“The fuck is wrong with me? The fuck's with you?” and then, as if realizing that a pokemon battle was likely to unfold, she felt her hands absently pat herself down, only to feel that she had left her tigh-holster back with her motorcycle.[break][break]

And she was not in the mood to walk herself back to the parking lot. “Fuck.”[break][break]

His comment of the Spoink only made her stare at him with a blank, almost dumbfounded expression. “I don't have 'em...”[break][break]

Hostility finally seemed to defuse itself. She could only blink heavily, as if her brain was running on fumes. “Uhh... raincheck?”[break][break]

She found her flask instead of a pokeball. She screwed off the cap to take a sip.

She dropped the flipflop back to the sand, as if realizing that would be too extreme a measure... and the fact that dominic sinclair seemed to be twice her height when up close.[break][break]

Funny how height could do that.[break][break]

“I'll get the damn pig, and we'll wipe you out—you'll eat so much shit, you'll look like the contestants from Mantine Surfing last year.”[break][break]

Dominic had literally pulled her chain—affixing a construct to her leg to keep her from making a hasty departure. “Fuck!” and with that yank, her massive bowl of shaved ice spilled out onto the sand. “Ohhhh, come on!”[break][break]

She paid money for that drink.[break][break]

Her hand swung back, if only to bat at the persistent Klefki like she was trying to ward a Combee from a honey pot.[break][break]

Sand died blue as Bailey reoriented herself, almost tripping over the chain as she gave it a firm yank. “What? You wanna go for round two, bucko? Wanna fuckin' fight? We can throw down. Get your pokemon. We can fuckin' go—!” She extended her arms outward, holding them out in a challenging display.[break][break]

As a member of the Elite Four, she should have been expected to behave in a more civil manner.[break][break]

But it did not fucking matter, because people only seemed to recognize her when it convenient for them.[break][break]

She turned to march back in dominic sinclair 's direction, arms still outstretched. She was ready to get in his face, breath hot and heavy with the smell of heavy liquor. A good screaming match sounded like the perfect fix for her frustrations as her face flushed red.[break][break]

Mid-step, she fetched her flipflop, brandishing it as if it were a weapon.[break][break]

And that was when a fucking snake blasted sand over the front of her. She blinked, only feeling the sand slap against the lower half of her dress as it swayed from the spray.

“...Huh?” And the pokemon departed back into the crowd, her eyes following its direction.[break][break]

She stood there, stupefied. What was that supposed to accomplish?[break][break]

Her eyes switched back. “Uh... right, where were we? Fuck you?”

Music rumbled, letting its aftershocks tingle down her spine; amplified as her body bent to dip beneath the bar.[break][break]

Lower, lower, but she would shuffle beneath it. Balancing her shaved ice in a free hand, she laughed with the onlookers as they cheered on the contestants. Some recognized her, though she was indifferent to their attention as she took a heavy sip.[break][break]

Fuzzy in mind and in body, she could feel a gleeful smile rise to her features.[break][break]

It felt good to detach. It felt good to rip her sporadic mind from its stem and shut it off. Who gave a shit about Ultra Beasts? Who gave a shit about almost dying on countless occasion?[break][break]

Not her. Not right now.[break][break]

Old bombardments of trauma washed away as she shuffled back in line, waiting on the last round of limbo. Humming along with the tune, she failed to see dominic sinclair as he navigated through the crowd.[break][break]

She only noticed his arrival when a cloud of sand suddenly filtered into her face, causing her to cough and sputter as she managed to shuffle fully out from beneath the bar.[break][break]

Her eyes opened in time to catch his guttural growl.[break][break]

“Uhhhhh,” and memories filtered of their battle in the park, from which she had ran away after her pokemon had assaulted him. “Hi?”[break][break]

Bailey Cooper was not fond of being held accountable for her own actions.[break][break]

She aligned herself straight, but not before her hand dug into the sand and deployed it in his general direction. “Bye!” and back into the crowd she went, cackling as she almost choked on her sloshing, half-melted ice drink.[break][break]

This was her big brain moment.

Bailey Cooper took the first sip, tasting only what had melted and the alcohol that greeted it. It was a way to dull the senses, in the same way that someone would cup a hand to a flame to displace the air around it.[break][break]

Deprive certain senses of oxygen for long enough, and she was sure she'd find herself at the wake's edge—puking.[break][break]

The Elite Four member told herself to not let that happen again.[break][break]

Still, gin tasted sweet and the flavoring of the swablu even sweeter. So saccharin, it lingered on the tongue with its juniper like a mash that her teeth could not scrape off.[break][break]

“how long can you go!” someone chanted, lowering the stick as the game of limbo began.[break][break]

Yeah... how low could she go? Her eyes swept slow to the scene.[break][break]

Her sundress was tied at her waist, just to keep it out of the way as she took her turn at the descending bar; swimsuit still dry.[break][break]

Gravity had an odd sway, but she felt that it would be possible to walk even with this impairment.[break][break]

The fight between these two baby pokemon had gained a new level of intensity, and she felt like a new trainer out on her first route again. What was she supposed to do with a pokemon she did not technically own? When there was no pokeball to recall it?[break][break]

She opted to pull the spoink away, pulling back her psychic pokemon before the throat chop could find its mark.[break][break]

The ground split, but she did not have the time to observe the damage. Like she was guilty of a crime, she was already running.[break][break]

“Sorry!” She would yell over her shoulder; Piggie Smalls huffing and squirming in her arms. “I gotta go! My bad! Have a nice day!”[break][break]

Her spoink would raise his head, peaking just enough over Bailey's shoulder to unleash one last strike—psychic.[break][break]

He launched a hail of pebbles towards the ice-cream ruiner.

“Fuck off,” she said with a light dismissal, rolling her shoulder in its joint just to loosen the muscle. “I want my first challenge to be in Evergrande, smack dab in the middle of that arena that they have all nice and pretty for me.”[break][break]

Her eyes scan the stretching emptiness of their arena. No floor, so her pokemon beat their wings to remain suspended. His own pokemon diametrically opposed to her own.[break][break]

She had a Gliscor of her own—she knew what they were about.[break][break]

When her pokemon glance over their shoulders, they'd catch the swirl of her finger. “You two know the drill,” and that was their signal to begin.[break][break]

Flatter initiated the combat; Mandibuzz fluttering its eyelashes in a coy manner directed to the Noctowl. Something to boost the owl's morale while intending to cause equal confusion.[break][break]

“Switch the glider out, Buzz,” because there were enough ground-types involved in this fight.[break][break]

The dragonfly pokemon would buzz its wings to life, pulling forward as it would aim to close the distance between itself and the floating gliscor. Then, with a twirl, the flygon would swing with the full strength of its tail as it deployed dragon tail.

She had felt her own life almost slip from its coil, and that left her trembling.[break][break]

“Fuck,” and she has to clap both hands to her face; hard with its sting. “Fuck!” This time, louder, and she bawled her hands into her hair, just to pull and feel the strands fray.[break][break]

Being alive had been a miracle, but it still fell short. Not good enough, not fast enough, not strong enough—frustration felt like it was ready to squeeze until she would burst.[break][break]

“Get us high enough for a good vantage point. Shouldn't take long to find someone—we should be the only people here,” and with that command, Tink would latch to her arm and heave her back to the expanse of the sky, where weight only pulled down at her legs.[break][break]

It was better than standing, where its pressure rested on her shoulders.[break][break]
