Bailey leaned back in her chair, unable to explain her feelings of sympathy. These creatures—these Ultra Beasts—they were dangerous. They were hostile. They killed.[break][break]

But so could Pokemon.[break][break]

Nature toiled, uncaring for who those who proclaimed it cruel. In a reality separated from this one, creatures existed without human interference. In that absence, there were no trainers. There were no battles. There was only the ongoing fight for survival.[break][break]

It was hard to hate something merely because it existed, even if it could be capable of great harm.[break][break]

“Lane's the only jackass I know in our science department, and I don't feel like explaining this shit to anyone else.”[break][break]

She rubbed her brow.[break][break]

“Everyone's gonna freak the fuck out. Yeah, sure, the thing is dead, but that doesn't change the fact that it managed to sneak back with us,” and her fingers sought her temples, just to rub away the oncoming headache, “and every clown in this fuckin' political bullshit likes to blow everything out of the water. What? Am I gonna have to hear about this... aquatic initiative? The fuck is it called? Aqua? Whatever. Fuckin' made to fight Ultra Beasts, and I'm the only one fucking fighting them. Every goddamn time.”[break][break]

Her breath ran hot, and she breathed to air out her last puff of hostility.[break][break]

“They can suck my dick.”

Clumsy hands sought the division between Groudon's armor-like plates.[break][break]

Bailey Cooper felt her fingers clutch into the awakened grooves that ran as long and as stark as ravines, trying to latch to a creature that so easily dwarfed her; on her waist, a cold truth revealed as a single pokeball sat on her belt. The rest were empty, marked by their minimized size to reflect their lacking contents.[break][break]

She had only brought Tink.[break][break]

One trembling hand clutched the red orb to her chest, cradling the object like an egg; her only ounce of control. In a last moment of thought, it was tucked into the inner pocket of her jacket, where it jutted and refused to be concealed.[break][break]

Without it, this pokemon was primal and unyielding; rapid and frothing and all-consuming with a heat that began to singe her hands and make the skin protest.[break][break]

“You better run!” Bailey screamed to the heavens, holding herself to a pokemon that felt like it could not be restrained. “Next time we fight, I'll shove you into a pokeball! You hear me? That's a promise!” A promise that rang with such volume that it made her head ache from the blood rush.[break][break]

It rang empty at the sight of the draco meteor.[break][break]

Panic. “Destroy it! Solar Beam—!” but her command was uttered too late. Her vision flared white.[break][break]

The ruination of the impact was blinding. Her hands were unable to retain their grip as the wake of its force washed over her; it came with such speed she thought it was the same as pulling her soul from her own body, like death had come and cleaved her within that fraction of a moment.[break][break]

But that was the feeling of her fall. That was the sensation of gravity.[break][break]

The gathered solar light formed in the gullet of the beast, but as the ground collapsed, Groudon released an attack that struck across an empty and rumbling sky; a beam of pure, raw energy decapitating the tip of a far-off mountain with its screech as it stretched across the skyline.[break][break]

Falling. She was falling.[break][break]

Bailey hit the raw surface of the chasm, so propelled by force that she felt her body hit its surface like she were a discarded doll.[break][break]

Like Mt. Pyre, her hands blindly sought traction; fingers digging into raw grooves, trying to snag onto anything to slow her decent. Instead, she can only feel something hot and viscous spray out from her fingers. Earth cutting and shredding her skin that it refused to slow her.[break][break]

Nothing will save me this time.[break][break]

Her jacket tore, lined by a show of blood that followed its division.[break][break]

I still can't win.[break][break]

Her shoes tried to catch, but their weak, canvas-like material was unable to find traction.[break][break]

Hasn't this been a long time coming?[break][break]

A jutting section of rock stuck out like a precipice. Her body landed atop of it.[break][break]

When she hit, it came with such force that it choked the air from her body as her side took the brunt of the blow; then, her slant, as she felt herself skidding off from its surface as the rest of her weight refused to be stopped. Her arms outstretched to grasp onto the ledge, feeling her nails drag as she desperately tried to hold on, tried to not look over her shoulder, tried to not see the rolling boil of certain death—[break][break]

All she could feel was the numbness of her arms, then their tremble. The jutting edges of the red orb still poking out from the pocket that she had so crudely shoved it into.[break][break]

“Please, please, please—!” where the words I don't want to die lingered unspoken, rioting against a mind that screamed that it was time to accept her failings and be broken beneath them. “I can do this! I can fucking do this! I can still—” Choking on tears, there was no amount of strength left in her body that could hold her.[break][break]

She fell.[break][break]

“Stay with me, Lopez,” and Bailey chalked his reaction to shock rather than incompetence. She knew how fear could make the body feel weighed; how her limbs could feel like lead to be dragged.[break][break]

She snapped two pokeballs from her belt; with a snap, their releases were deployed as two red shapes took form on either side of her. Meowstic and Blaziken manifested from their shrouds of light, taking stance as they stood shoulder to shoulder with her.[break][break]

Mean Look was the first move deployed. The male Meowstic letting its eyes glow with malice to entice the Ultra Beast to stay within the confines of the warehouse.[break][break]

“Hawkins, go for the hit-and-run,” and despite having two pokemon on the field, Bailey was ready to snap off another capsule if necessary.[break][break]

Speed Boost activated as the Blaziken took its stance, heat emitting like steam from its limbs; then, fire, as the pokemon executed the move flame charge to initiate their clash.

Bailey knew her laugh was strained, pulled taunt by her own duress.[break][break]

“You wouldn't want my help. I think I failed English,” and that subtle jab at her own faults left tension to quiver like an earthquake, threatening to fissure.[break][break]

The adventure had been a success, but it had come with its own cost. As these costs kept building, in every little failing, Bailey Cooper rationalized that it could have been done better; that, because she thought of herself as a fuck-up, these scenarios were preventable.[break][break]

She fought against this process, but it was so deeply ingrained to “take blame” that she struggled when to let go.[break][break]

“I'm waiting on Lucas,” and her secret was laid plan as she gently laid out the tissue, “we had a stowaway.”[break][break]

There was no point keeping it a secret, but the truth of the crumpled creature still made her lips twitch into a frown.

Her hands clutched to the rough, unshaven edges of the crystal.[break][break]

It was all that Bailey had to hold onto.[break][break]

Roars from the grounded green dragon flowed like electricity down her spine; all hairs raised as Rayquaza continued its approach. Crawling, pulling, its vestigial claws dragging the length of its serpent-like body, she watched the formation of the sigil upon its head as it began a metamorphosis of its own.[break][break]

Groudon marched, building slow momentum with each step as it attempted to intersect its crawling foe; attempting to cut between Rayquaza and the crystal it sought. With each tremendous step of the legendary, Bailey can only cast her eyes to the rolling boil of the exposed magma; bubbles bursting to release plumes of heat.[break][break]

As Ancient Power manifested, she recalled a move of primal power—a name that had escaped her, until this moment.[break][break]

“Precipice Blades!” She would scream, raising her hand to cast her fingers; frayed like a wall of spikes.[break][break]

Rising, ground trembled and then reshaped as her command was heard; Groudon raising a enclosed fist before colliding it to the malleable surface.[break][break]

In that fissure, rock-faced blades rose like bramble as it followed a line to the collapsed Rayquaza. Some blades standing so steep, so tall, they would rise to interrupt the manifestation of Ancient Power. Ground against rock, crashing and spearing into one another in a collision that was intended to fragment the Rayquaza's attack; spear it and hold it together.[break][break]

It unfolded so fast, with such fervor, that Bailey ran to Groudon when it felt like it was already too late.[break][break]

Bailey chomped into her unwrapped burrito, hissing and breathing in a pained silence as she chewed through its molten contents.[break][break]

Tin foil folded over her fingers, paper wrapping askew, she was thankful that her lunch was so well wrapped. It kept her next bite from spilling the hot, melted cheese into her lap. “Hot, hot, hot,” she'd breath from her seat on a abandoned steel railing.[break][break]

Bumbo, her fire type, could only shake his head in dismay as his trainer continued to torture herself.[break][break]

She was too hungry to wait for it to cool.

It felt like there was a pit in her stomach.[break][break]

Bailey slicked back her bangs, trying to push them away from her eyes; a comforting motion to try and distract herself from the tangela-like coil that continued to toil in the empty expanse of her gut. She had skipped breakfast. She had skipped lunch.[break][break]

It was hard to eat when she felt like this. Stress persisted, even when the endeavor was behind her. It lingered, tauntingly, like a reminder that her job was not finished—that the universe still dwelt behind corners, waiting to catch her with her guard lowered.[break][break]

When had she become paranoid?[break][break]

“Fuck,” and it was only when she sighed and leaned back that she caught Kyle's tired gaze.[break][break]

A distraction. It caught her from her spiral, keeping her from feeding a beast that had grown since Mossdeep. “You manage to get some sleep?”[break][break]

Her hand coiled around the Ultra Beast, corners of the napkin frayed between her grasp; careful to not crush, only to conceal.

“Fuck,” and Bailey patted a hand to a crystal like it was a light switch, wondering why nothing happened. Was this not like Mossdeep? “Oh fuck?”[break][break]

Dumbassery would finally spell her demise.[break][break]

Or it would have, if not for the trill of Piggie Smalls. Her eyes pull to the Spoink, feeling the strength behind the war-cry and then the radiation of energy that swept from it. Its flow came, filled, and then overflowed from what was clenched in her hand.[break][break]

Her eyes followed; orb, crystal, then to the red giant as the connection was finally established.[break][break]

The overflowing heat flushed over her body with such an intensity that she had to blink back tears; heat searing straight to the white of her eyes like curling smoke. She had to raise her hands just to brace against it.[break][break]

Smalls' fall would be interrupted; marshmallow wings extended to catch the Psychic pokemon to envelope it. She caught sight of Tink as her head twisted back to avoid staring into the searing light of the mega evolution. “Go! Hurry! Find somewhere safe!”[break][break]

Because when she had found the Spoink, she had already been mourning the death of a pokemon.[break][break]

The tilt of the plate growing more drastic as she shouted her order, commanding the legendary to action as it sprang from the ground to grapple with their segmented foe; large claws raised and brought down with hammer-like force.[break][break]

It felt like the sky would fall, like all of its sundering force would press her down; grinding, she realized her jaw had been locked the moment her fingers had touched the orb.[break][break]

Something felt familiar in that brief glow of light, and it was enough to draw her focus as Piggie Smalls rendered crystal from construct. Crumbling, she can hear the separation, and then the resounding calamity as the red monolith was cast aside.[break][break]

She wondered if such force was how these mountains were made in the first place; massifs threatening to shape themselves beneath such crushing weight.[break][break]

“Tink, take Smalls,” she breathed. “Get 'em outta here.”[break][break]

That was when the segmented dragon aligned itself, straightening its trajectory like a descending spear. She felt like a durant in its sights, only distracted by the link that tethered in her mind; claws scratching through bone with its static-like draw, beckoning her gaze to the collapsed legendary.[break][break]

She knew.[break][break]

That was when her hand plucked the red orb from atop the Spoink's head, sundering its psychic energy and leaving the crystal to collapse without its tether.[break][break]

At that moment, feet pushed from the ground as she ran; dirtied shoes protesting the surge as Tink sprung to action behind her. Across the distance, across the tilting platform, Bailey Cooper lunged for the shape of the crystal.[break][break]

Like Mossdeep, she breathed and sought fire as her hand pressed to its rainbow-like surface.[break][break]

She had performed primal evolution; once.[break][break]

Bailey was used to rough landings.[break][break]

She felt her body curve, hitting the ground at such an angle that she could buckle and roll with its flow; better to follow the force than to fight it. In this mad tumble, she linked her arms around Piggie Smalls, hoping to shield the pokemon with her own body. The skid did more to her jacket than her own skin, as she felt her shoulders roll and drag across the rocky terrain.[break][break]

Falling a few feet short from the orb, she would open her eyes to see Tink attempting to regain her composure. The burn that scored the corner of her fairy's wing was blackened and ugly with its char. “Fuck our luck,” were the best words that she could choke out as she fought to stand.[break][break]

Trainer and pokemon would recuperate. Tink flexing her wings as Bailey would take Piggie Smalls by the small outstretch of its hand; there wasn't enough time to nurse their wounds.[break][break]

It was only when she accepted that help that Bailey felt her eyes drift to the spoink's pearl, noting the same reflective light that emitted from the even larger construct. Her mind was not allowed to linger on such an observation for long, but she felt like her earlier suspicion had been confirmed; there was something similar.[break][break]

The ground shifted, further disrupted by the weight of the monoliths crashing behind them; earth split to reveal the heated veins that ran deep beneath its surface. It kept her from thinking, kept her from feeling, as adrenaline urged her to move.[break][break]

They had to act before they could be caught in the crossfire.[break][break]

“They'll drag us down with 'em!” Her feet carry her as Tink would fly in tow; the original plan still in action as she sough to hide herself behind the radiating light of the construct.[break][break]

The aching of her lungs demanded a hand be pressed to the surface of the construct as she would breathe, trying to find the time to fight down the panic, like someone seeking a wall for support. “What the fuck? What? Fuck?”[break][break]

She looked to Smalls. She looked to the ensnared shapes of Groudon and Rayquaza as they collided against one another. She looked to the sky, like an unseen God would answer her.[break][break]

There wasn't enough time to lament her luck.[break][break]

“We gotta pick the right time to make a break for it,” because they weren't the target of this ongoing conflict. They were just caught in the middle of it.[break][break]

Tink executed Life Dew, letting healing waters soothe her burn.[break][break]

“On my mark, we use Extreme Speed and get the fuck outta here. Smalls, you're gonna use Psychic, and we're gonna take this fucking thing with us.” She talked like the hot air would fill her chest, like bravado would spell success.[break][break]

And her head would turn, watching the two unknown pokemon clash; the tilt of the ground growing more dramatic as their weights pushed further down.[break][break]

They couldn't afford to be caught by another hyper beam.[break][break]

"Think you can handle it, Smalls?" and that would be when her hand would transition from one rainbow-like surface to another; fingers grasping around the red orb in a kind gesture, as if to give the Spoink a reassuring touch.[break][break]

Bailey, no longer occupied by a verbal brawl, would make her way to the closest table just to lean against it. Taking an unmarked red cup, she would ladle the contents of a punch bowl until it filled to the brim. Ginger sips would inform her that the drink was without liquor, and she figured that it would be for the best.[break][break]

Hydrate, then resume drinking from the flask. That was the smart way to do it.[break][break]

She stared at the sea of pin-cushions as they pushed their way onto the beach, uncaring about their assault as she opted to step over one of the dastardly pokemon.[break][break]

By accident, one step would be the equivalent of a kick as she stumbled over one of the poison-types.[break][break]

It did not pass.[break][break]

Bailey felt the tremble as it traveled from the ground to her chest; the sound of churning earth only revealing its full might as prodigious claws breached the surface. With that, she felt the shift, as weight from one end of their platform was applied with such force that it seemed to threaten a full tip into the depths.[break][break]

Earth made malleable shuddered beneath such application, like it was more akin to sand than something solid; whatever was coming, it would be able to cleave this platform with unimaginable force.[break][break]

“We gotta go—!” Old memories arose, old panic.[break][break]

Her feet failed to find traction. As she scooped Smalls into her arms, her efforts to push were useless as the platform became steep; rainbow lights casting across the stone arena signaling like an alarm to her eyes. She had to shield a hand to dampen its intensity.[break][break]

And with that moment, the twist of her head was enough for her to catch sight of the emerging monstrosity; something in its shape harking back to a nightmare that Bailey cannot place.[break][break]

That was not an Ultra Beast.[break][break]

Wind howled, and with it, her sight obscured by the fraying and tossing of her bangs. The draft pushed down against the shoulders; oppressive.[break][break]

How could it feel like the sky was shaking? As her eyes glance back, staring at the elongation of the descending titan, she found her answer. This time, the shape of a new creature unfamiliar with its draconian fury.[break][break]

Run. Their conflict for the awakened orb was not fully understood as the Elite Four member dug her nails into the ground, uncaring if it brought discomfort from the scrape. With that, she was able to find a strength in her throes, propelling her into a mad dash against the sinking of the platform.[break][break]

There was that same overbearing presence, that same unspeakable strength, that Bailey Cooper had come to recognize; the thrum of charging lights as the green dragon parted its maw to show the overflowing light. Hyper beam. Her best friend.[break][break]

Her hand snapped one of the capsules from her belt; white wings the first thing seen from the released red light as her Togekiss sunk her claws into her shoulders. “Extreme Speed!” There was no need for complex instruction.[break][break]

Wind ruptured twice; Togekiss sailing across the length of the tilting plateau and towards the rotating light of the rainbow orb; out of the way of the beam. Bailey felt her shoes skid, aggravating the blisters from her hike as she came to the orb and then attempt to slink her way behind it.[break][break]
