Her victory was brief. As the young woman climbed onward, she knew that the smirk plastered on her face was for her and her alone. “Was that a compliment?” She called back, surprised to hear him retaliate. “I'll accept it,” knowing that a word of praise would be rare from her capable partner. The urge to banter would be irresistible–for the both of them.[break][break]

No ghosts came to ruin their lives. The climb was uneventful. “Now what?” The steel doors were the last obstacle. As Bailey climbed to their destination, she tried to refrain from looking down. Her knuckles had turned white, gripping tightly against the bar as she shuffled to the left–sparing enough room for Daniel to squeeze next to her.[break][break]

By reflex, her gaze dropped as Daniel came to reside by her side. She tried to act unfazed. There was a natural friction that emerged from the closeness. Her skin prickled, sensing it. When he uttered his jab, she instantly latched to it...but the downward shift of her eyes had been a mistake. There was an audible gulp as Bailey realized how far up the shaft they had climbed. It could have been misconstrued.[break][break]

She wasn't scared of heights; but, this was enough to make her heart clench.[break][break]

The sickness from earlier almost threatened to rise. She had to push it down. It took mental effort to pry one of her hands from the ladder and into the wedge of the elevator door. “Yeah, yeah, let's just get this damn thing open–” and she yanks hard with her hand, trying her damnedest to get her side to budge without losing her grip on the ladder.

The blitzle is aglow with unspent energy. One glance at the young foal seemed to signify Bailey's intentions; it had been caught red-handed. The charred remains of the night-stall loomed behind the unassuming stripped pokemon. “So, you're the troublemaker,” and Bailey angled herself for battle, a hand hovering over an unspent pokeball. An electric-type would be a good addition to the team... and this one had spunk.[break][break]

Cooper always liked the troublemakers. When the pokemon charged, her Boldore was ready.[break][break]

Anyone could guess the results of the battle just from those split moments. An electric pokemon against a rock type? That was a losing battle. When Boldore tanked the quick electric assault–wild charge–he retaliated with a hefty smack of mud. Ground. The bitzle's weakness...[break][break]

And Bailey threw her capsule.

“Oh shit,” Bailey murmured as the other attempts to cross the gaps failed; the web bridge had brought her from the ledge and to the closest pillar, but that was as far as she had crossed before she watched two members of the rescue crew plummet down to the depths below.[break][break]

Togekiss seemed tempted to lunge from Bailey's shoulders, wanting to help, but that was when @andromeda called out to DANIEL WALKER . She turned her head, if only because she had watched her partner do the same–just in time to watch the man plummet down to the abyss below. “EXCUSE me?” and at first, she wondered if she listened to someone committing suicide until she heard the splash against the water. “Oh,” that was a weight off her mind. “That was dramatic–fuck, it was cool though.”[break][break]

What wasn't cool was watching the silhouette of someone plummet down from the ceiling; the same as what had happened to those that had tried to cross through the use of Physic. Something was interfering with the moves of other pokemon? But... what was it? Tink slapped a wing against the side of Bailey's head, expressing that she was eager to help and tired of sitting on her shoulders. “Hey, hey! I'm trying to think!” An impossible task with so much happening; Bailey's poor brain cells were trying to stitch a plan together.[break][break]

And someone made a freaking ice bridge. persephone amavi had deployed a water-type pokemon to assist those that had fallen into the water.[break][break]

She could think later. “I could make that jump,” Bailey said to DANIEL WALKER as she pointed toward the pillar that @satori had landed on. It seemed like the quakes had stopped. If things were stable, why not risk it? “Get those web bridges ready, I'll be right back,” and before he could protest, she took a runner's stance as Tink extended her wings and gripped tighter into her shoulders. [break][break]

If this went well, she could get to the guy that had banged his head and help him join with the others. He... didn't look too heavy.[break][break]

Bailey went for it; her shoes crunched the ground beneath her as she sprang forward, Tink unable to fly but able to catch the faint updraft–kinda like a hand-glider. It looked cooler than it felt. Her Togekiss had a powerful grip that made her skin bust with a fresh bloom of bruising.[break][break]

When the ground quaked and the foundations before them shuddered, the sight of a net-bridge was a relief; the reinforcements only made it better. Bailey Cooper drew in a low breath, watching as some daringly made their way across... and knew that those methods would be right up her alley, if the bridge was not already available.[break][break]

With a tap on the waist, Bailey released her Togekiss. “Might be too tight for you to really stretch out and fly properly,” Tink landed on her shoulders, recognizing what her trainer wanted–if the flight would be difficult, then at least the Togekiss could use her wings just to assist in case something went wrong.[break][break]

With the fairy-typed hand-glider attached to her shoulder, Bailey felt no worries as she made her attempt to cross. “Coulda' just had Kapow fling me across,” but that would have been... too stupid.[break][break]

In the middle of the night, Bailey Cooper is called back to work. Leather jacket over her shoulders, pokeballs on her waist, she had been the closest League member in the area to respond to the call. Something about rambunctious pokemon causing trouble in the streets; easy stuff.[break][break]

It was her job to chase off the wild miscreants. If everything went smoothly, she could wrap this up with a few flashy battles and let the people of the Lower District of Slateport get back to sleep; some people had to work tomorrow.[break][break]

“Come on, Craggy.” The Boldore followed after her. His tiny red legs hold up the massive weight of his upper body as he scuttled down the street, trying to keep pace with Bailey's long strides.

“Huh?” Bailey was unfazed by @fumiko 's sudden intrusion–she had heard the young woman's rambling a few moments prior. What was she? A journalist? Wasn't she a little young? The ghost comment had been a callback, not a... Never mind. The gruesome story encouraged Bailey to lift her hand and wiggle her fingers. “Ooo, spooky. Where'd you hear that one? Summer Camp?”[break][break]

Punch Dragon would whoop the shit out of anything in this cave–bloodsuckers or not.[break][break]

Bailey felt her lips split into a condescending grin, equally amused to be called a rookie by a teenager. As the reporter went to the front of the pack, she nudged her partner. From the corner of her eye, she could spy his amusement. “Hear that Daniel? We should get our shit together,” and she found a moment of respite; a chance to chuckle. The situation was serious, but that had managed to cut some of the tension.[break][break]

Daniel's question brought her back to reality. “I'd hope–” and there was another intrusion. persephone amavi spared her knowledge; Bailey watched the silver-haired woman carefully, recalling the warnings that had been given prior to this expedition. No one could be trusted. “Yeah. Like she said,” and she played it off, pretending that the woman had stolen the words from her mouth.[break][break]

There was more light. That was the good news.[break][break]

Bailey hung in the middle of the pack, listening to the noises that reverberated through the dark caverns. Was it voices? Or was it her mind playing tricks? Anxious to the darkness that closed in from all sides, she kept her head low and flanked close by her partner's side.[break][break]

DANIEL WALKER was the only familiar face. Her team of three pokemon had been assembled in case they encountered resistance within the caverns–not for support. She came with the muscle...and the three orbs were oddly absent from her belt. They were kept close to her chest, tucked in the pocket that was in the inner lining of her jacket.[break][break]

How many people were trapped down here? She wondered. “I'd rather deal with the ghosts.”[break][break]

Bailey listened, leaning herself against Gene, as he explained what had kept him from showing up sooner. “I gotta visit your dad again. I haven't swung by Lavaridge in a while,” and when the subject switched to her, she tried to wave away his inquiries. To her, it felt like nothing had changed. Life was still the same... even if there were a few changes.[break][break]

“I hitched up with the League. Don't know how I tricked myself into doing it,” Bailey joked as she threw an arm around her friend's shoulders. [break][break]

“Less about me. More about you. It's been waaaaaay too long,” and she would escort him to the bar where they could sit and chat, like how they used to. Just two dumb kids trying to learn everything about the world before they were ready; Bailey still felt like she fit that picture. Maybe that was why she found herself drawn to places like this–the ugly felt more genuine than anything that resided outside those bar doors.[break][break]

She slapped some of the bills down onto the table and took a moment to fetch her beer from its coaster. While Bailey felt tempted to chug her drink and order another, she knew that wasn't an option for tonight. “What do you feel like? First drink is on me.”

The image that thought conjured was morbid; but, Bailey shrugged it off. She wasn't squeamish. Did she think it was fucked up? Sure. People were so weird. Of all the weird shit there is to eat, they pick that? Seriously?[break][break]

Chubs squealed with... delight (?) as Joey mounted his skateboard. “I couldn't pick up the hobby–I didn't grow up in a place like this,” and she waved at the Mall that surrounded them, aglow with its modernity. Her eyes focus from the spinning wheels of the board to his face, trying to gauge his age for herself. She squinted.[break][break]

“You got a babyface... but, yeah. You're not a kid.” If she was older than him, it wasn't by a lot. “Don't know why people gotta be pricks about what other people do.”[break][break]

She nudged one of the bags. “Waste my time,” the truth. “Maybe something will come along. Maybe I'll grow up. I dunno," a shrug as her words trailed away. "Hey, speaking of which...you know anyone with one of those... uh... secret bases?” Because she was offering. [break][break]

“I'm keeping the big Charizard one, though. I call dibs.”

In the outskirts of Slateport, she kept her hands tucked in the pockets of her leather jacket and walked with a slouch; it was called minding her own damn business. Anyone could do it. Eyes narrowed, gaze focused on the pavement, she could walk knowing that most people would pay her the same respect. Her worst enemy would be cat-callers; the foe of anyone that looked moderately attractive in this sea of hardened faces. A middle finger or the summoning of her Kommo-o would solve those woes. [break][break]

Nobody messed with punch dragon.[break][break]

She weaved, departing from the crowd to navigate down a tight alleyway. The cadet knew her way around these parts. Nights of drunken merriment were spent in this smoking dumpster fire. Sometimes, it was good to cut loose away from judgmental eyes–Bailey Cooper was no saint.[break][break]

In the narrow space, it was hard to navigate. Each turn was sharper and sharper. She could not see what came next, even if she tried. Before she could make the next turn down the passage, someone stepped out in front of her. Bailey collided against the stranger, stumbling back and falling on her ass.[break][break]

“Frick–!” Were the first words out of her mouth, barked as if she were a Growlithe that had just been stepped on.

Daniel had less trouble making his way through the hatch. Bailey was thankful. If there had been a struggle, her arm would have been hurting something awful. She returned her phone back to her pocket–not fast enough to escape his gaze. “It does its job,” she grumbled, feeling like a student that had failed to study for a test; a situation she had found herself in countless times.[break][break]

The ladder looked sturdy. The bolts seemed intact. When she gave it a good shake, it refused to budge from the wall. Ghosts couldn't fuck with it–she hoped. “Me first, huh?” She called back to Daniel, fixing him with a knowing look as a swarmy smile ripped at her lips. “If I fall, huh?” She was goading him, trying to see if he'd be embarrassed. Bailey had skin showing. Her denim shorts were not professional. Now, it was her turn to tease. “Eyes on the objective, Walker.”[break][break]

Teasing aside, she started to climb the ladder. Which floor were they heading for? Daniel had been the one that hit the button. She had not bothered to pay attention.[break][break]
