She sat there, wondering how many days lead time they’d need before the Pokémon around the area started going crazy bonkers for no apparent reason.

Granted, the information they had was made with a margin for error so anything was possible at this point.

“Should there be any who want to volunteer, the choice is up to them; otherwise, us Rangers can be able to handle quelling the wild Pokémon and taking them somewhere safe where they won’t be agitated should be enough. We do have enough squads to go around, right?”

Maybe she was just wishful thinking. Maybe not. But either way she was ready.

She held up a hand with two fingers extended.

“I got two. A pair of troublemakers, believe it or not. They’re six years old but my f—good grief, their energy levels are off the charts,” she elaborated in a fit of laughter, remembering to self-censor herself because yes, there were other kids around and she didn’t want to run her potty mouth off and be a bad example.

“Their dad spoils them so much I’m the one who has to bring order to the court when they’re on the loose,” she added with a very pointed eye-roll.

“Their grandparents spoil ‘em, too. That’s both his parents and my own mom,” she continued with an exaggerated, defeated shoulder slump.

“I can ask my husband no problem about inviting your kids over, since I know your mother in-law can’t be around to handle them all the time,” she offered afterward. She knew how this shit worked, since she was a working parent herself.

While most of the Rangers were unattached, there were a few that had families of their own to protect—while they were in that minority, it made the work (and the end of the day) all the more satisfying.

There was—actually, one question that came to mind, now that this had been pointed out.

“What’s the capacity for the underground shelters?”

And then—how come she didn’t know that there was one under Lavaridge? Also: location-wise, since they were at the foot of Mount Chimney, wasn’t this going to be a bit risky in and on itself?

“I also have another question, although it’s more like on a potential scenario—nothing’s going to cause Mount Chimney itself to go berserk, right? I mean—since Lavaridge is at the foot of the volcano itself and all. Just… making sure.”

Well, there you had it. Her questions were now cast to the wind.

“Hey, you got this.”

Those were her words of comfort to her better half. The chaos wasn’t definitely missed on her, that’s for sure.

Thank hell we’re small but mighty, she added to herself as she watched her husband take to the stage. Hopefully to lighten the tense atmosphere in the room.

She couldn’t help but gigglesnort for a few moments at what was supposed to be his original introduction. Hey, wife privileges, don’t bat an eyelash at that!

She’d actually helped him condense the information—well, as much as she could anyway, because a lot of the technical mumbo-jumbo flew over most of her head—but for the parts where ease of functionality and usage were all concerned, she couldn’t help but grin.

“As Josh—well, my husband over here said, the custom builds are still in the prototype stage on the most part. We aim to strike a balance between design and function, so a custom monocle order isn’t too far off.”

Or, in the case of , an entirely new racing helmet of some kind.

“Further down the road as the reports from the field tests that everyone here can run—please do help us out—we may be able to expand further connectivity to additional information networks covered by the League as well. We get first dibs to test these out though.”

Now things were getting rather—busy. Speed picking up and all that.

What with what went down a few weeks ago, she was sure things were only going to get even spicier moving forward—and that was in the ‘oh shit the world may be doomed’ kind of manner.

The information was more than a little much to wrap around her head, but then again most of her duties involved her keeping the peace around the little hot springs resort town.

(Which, barring its volatile location at the foot of Mount Chimney, was pretty quiet on the most part.)

Trusting that the town could run by itself without her for a few hours, she’d eventually arrive next, hair still looking absolutely windswept and mussed up—her Braviary was currently taking an extended resting period within its Pokéball due to the distance she had to fly out (as she hadn’t completely set up all of her Teleport-available locations yet. Oops) to make today’s meeting.

And so far—

At least she wasn’t late?

“Captain Izumi from Lavaridge,” she introduced herself to the other people in the room. At least she knew approximately half of the ones who turned up, them being fellow Captains themselves.

Noticeably there were a few more missing, but hopefully they’d show up soon?

“Oh, totally! Maybe I can get Zack and Lyra to meet ‘em when you get the chance to come over to Lavaridge,” she hummed, unable to keep the excitement out of her voice as she followed the other man some ways back and saw—

A completely massive Tyrantrum carrying a redhead who was literally screeching with glee. At least the Tyrantrum had another Pokémon walking alongside it just in case the girl decided to take an unexpected trip down!

“Oh, my god they’re all going to have a ball when they meet Zack,” she continued as two of the three turned their way and greeted her.

“Hi!” she waved. Sometimes she forgot she was already a mother. Ah, to be young…

“You three better not be giving your dad a headache now, okay?!” she couldn’t help but add in her own ‘mom’ voice, before devolving into a fit of laughter. “When y’alls come out to Lavaridge for a visit I may have a couple new playmates for you to meet. And one of them’s a boy.”

She couldn’t help but laugh afterward. This was going to be a hoot.

Hot on the heels of the Venusaur was the—coconut tree.

Yes, wherever Gustave went, this giant-ass coconut tree would follow!

Due to the Exeggutor’s height, the shade it cast over the ground was—well, it was long, it was much, and while the other plants grew in its shade, the weeds were left to just wilt in the oppressive summer.

Now if only they had something blowing a nice wind, or some refreshing rain to help the bounty grow faster…

She felt her husband’s hand squeeze hers gently, and she looked over at the spiky-headed Chocobo man who was trying not to lose his shit.

“Hey, J… you’re looking pretty pale there,” she began quietly, gently returning the gesture with one of her own.

“I’m—I’m here, okay? Don’t panic.”

And then the meeting proper began. Good news, before the bad—

Oh boy. Oh, holy—

Having been assigned to oversee ’s Ranger training despite their differing locations, she understood at once why the older man was concerned at the choice. Another one () brought up a point, and she suspected that there may have been something else at play here…

Looking at the two new Ranger Captains, she made a mental note to grab their numbers and add them to the group chat later.

“Given Lavaridge’s proximity… we can volunteer our manpower, no matter the size, to the Desert,” she spoke up after a few moments of considering what she wanted to say, before looking at her husband.

She then gave Josh a look that said, ‘And besides, our moms are more than enough protection for Lavaridge while we’re away, right? I mean—’

Giving another glance, she then fished out her own phone and sent the other man a message.

‘Hey, I heard what’s up. I can get you set up in Lavaridge for the meantime, if you’re fine with that? I can ask my husband for help with your kids and all.’

It didn’t take too long for Sora to alight in one of the lower-growing trees, before she literally took a flying leap and scored a three-point landing on the ground below—recalling the Braviary back into his Friend Ball to allow the dual-type some time to rest.

Thankfully, the satchel bag she’d brought along didn’t tip over to the side, so the food she’d brought along didn’t spill. Whew, thank hell for that.

A few minutes’ of walking later, she finally found the person she was sent out to meet—and she couldn’t help but crack a grin at the other.

“Yeah, that’s me,” she replied before taking a little bow of her own in response to his greeting. “I heard you got kids of your own?”

That was what was within the information brief that was sent to her. Might as well get the familiar ground established so that they could get down to business afterward.

“Well, it’s been quiet on the movies front, but I’ll let him know you enjoyed that movie he made,” she continued with a grin on her face.

“As of now though he’s been busy with the tech division of the company because my mother-in-law is preparing for her eventual retirement and his succession as owner of the entire danged thing.”

At the mention of him asking if she knew anything about Mega Evolution, she cracked a smirk.

“Of course I do. Always have, always will be. Why, do you need me to mega-evolve my Gardevoir right now?” she asked the other, reaching into her pocket and thumbing one particular shrunken-down marble just in case he did ask for her to get ready right now.

She could only sigh at his words about the fate of the entire region.

“It’s nuts. We’ve had to not tell the kids about it. Don’t want to scare the hell out of them, you know. Especially if they have hyperactive imaginations and all that shit.”

Admittedly, the Lavaridge Ranger roster was—pretty small. At least in Izumi’s eyes it was, because it was just her and her husband who kept an eye on the small hot springs town, at least to her knowledge.

But that’s how she liked things, ‘keep it in the family’, as she jokingly called it. While she was tempted to tell her husband about her Mount Chimney escapade with , she decided not to—at least not yet.

While she was well-aware of what her husband brought along with him, this meant that she was left carting the food offering that she’d made to cover the both of them.

“You just left me to carry all the sandwiches?” was all she would reply, tempted to give him a noogie but hell, their height difference was too vast for her to reach his smug ass. Either way—

“Oh, really?” she inquired, her eyes sweeping over to the other one that her husband had pointed out () and blinking.

“I’ll take your word for it. And… stop being so nervous, J, I can tell you’re trying not to freak out.”

She then made her way over to the ‘buffet table’ and set down the several Tupperware containers full of nothing but various flavors of pinwheel sandwiches; all speared with tiny toothpicks. There was…also an obvious demarcation point as to who made what.

While her sandwiches looked clean and well-pressed, the ones that her husband made were a little more—rougher around the edges, if at all, and the toothpicks in them were crooked.

And she was sure the kids had run off with some of the sandwiches while they were making the food!

Once she was done setting down her food, her eyes wandered around the various food offerings—and decided to get a little bit of everything to sample for herself.

“So what’d you think they’re going to talk about?” she asked the tall blonde, who still looked nervous to all hell.
