another blow of clear smog rids the fumes surrounding the office and selena is just in time when skyler halts a few running thieves with altaria’s hyper voice.[break][break]

the few ones who escape through the vents, unfortunately, find themselves chased down by macua’s spirit shackle, who comes out of his pokéball at selena’s command. the arrows strike their targets and bind them with ghostly chains into decidueye’s wings.[break][break]

“now, that is quick.” the gym leader pats the owl’s head, eyes darting at skyler and nodding for her to follow.[break][break]

macua leads the two to the vents, advancing while pulling into his supernatural strings. the shackles shake as the avian tugs but their resistance is inferior to the pokémon’s strength.[break][break]

a wicked smile flashes on selena’s face as she looks at skyler. “i think it’s best for the police to find them here like this. what do you say?”[break][break]

selena’s fingers grasp the metal railings as the ship wobbles, thinking the megalopolans have an army underwater as well. her eyes dart back to tapu koko and venus who succeed thwarting the flying-types in spite of the aliens’ quick retaliation.[break][break]

ultra wormholes whirlpool in the sky above the giant trammels from the distant islands. with such a stroke of luck, the machineries’ activation triggers the earth and sends a colossal tidal wave into the city of lilycove.[break][break]

they have to move fast.[break][break]

“we’re wasting time on the coast. we need to advance now!” urgency coats her every word, her scream pleads for people to board the ships. she will wait before she gives the signal for the captain to sail forth.[break][break]

but if anyone is looking, they will notice selena is observing from the ledge of the bow. delphox has been called out and milotic already slips into the water. just like what she and tapu koko plan.[break][break]

the gym leader jumps, mounts on milotic and sails into the nearby isles where the enemies spawn. venus, who remains in the air, helps the other pokémons counter the tsunami with mirror move, adding size into their opposing ocean wave before she and tapu koko follows selena and medusa.[break][break]

as they reach the mouth of the holm, the surfing milotic drowns the megalopolans and their naganadels with muddy water as tapu koko electrocutes the drenched army with electroweb.[break][break]

when selena tells skyler they should use the smog for their advantage, what skyler not-so-subtly is not the first thing she has in mind. a breathe of momentary dismay escapes her gaping mouth before letting out a faint laughter at her partner. “i guess that also works.”[break][break]

the kalosian and castform rushes into the abandoned office to check on the perpetrators working their way inside. the thud from the sailor’s attack provides them a short window before they notice the journalist and her company. selena barges in, replicating the energy from skyler’s previous action as her cloud pokémon blasts the burglars inside with fire. they make an attempt to summon their weezings but realize the poison-types are already taken care of.[break][break]

desperate, they retrieve more smokescreen for their backpockets and unleash the veil of smoke. selena huffs, coughing, but makes an effort to notify skyler from the back. “they are escaping!”[break][break]

selena has never seen lilycove like this: ghosted, abandoned, and almost scorched to the ground. for a few months now, it has been her home away from kalos. vantage, the fruit of all her hard work, has found a home in lilycove. being its gym leader, she doesn’t expect the job to more of an honor than obligation. she has grown fond of the city and its people. and she will do anything not to watch it drown in flames.[break][break]

at the third day of war, megalopolans finally make an all-out move into the fortified city. war cries echo from the distant horizon, forcing the war god out of his capsule and witness the abomination waiting to happen. tapu koko pulsates with voltaic intensity, its unrelenting desire to protect the region materializes into the surge of power radiating from its golden crest.[break][break]

a brief text message is sent to all the employees of vantage, including Billi Marsh , before she puts herself into position: no one dies tonight for we’re the ones to write the story of our survival tomorrow. aboard the naval vessel, they watch the invaders’ fleet advance with naganadels and flying-types. the deity pokémon communicates with its mind that only selena will understand and the gym leader nods, agreeing to the plan. tapu koko rises into the air and it glances for venus to follow. the tapu utilizes the existing terrain and casts electroweb while altaria mirrors the wave of attacks back into the horde.[break][break]

“circe, medusa, help them.” from the ship, the delphox creates a light screen around the two, protecting from the incoming waves of attack. milotic, on the other hand, scatters life dew to heal them for attacks that will break through the shield.[break][break]

more and more areas in hoenn are succumbing to the vicious invasion of poison, surges of hostile pokémon attacks pop from all corners of the region. after the attacks in lilycove and fortree, selena has put herself on a patrol to report the effects of ultra beast toxic to the local wildlife.[break][break]

she receives reports of similar anomalies nearby slateport, about a school of qwilfish washed into the seaside and causing troubles for residents. they say the fish explodes when attempted to approach, spreading the poison they are engorged with. arriving on the scene with her toxapex, the water and poison-type carries the antidote for her trainer and begins treating the group of qwilfish. its baneful bunker proves effective in protectint itself and her trainer. meanwhile, the journalist documents the scene with her pokénav, lenses shifting from one qwilfish into another, featueing the changes in their physique.[break][break]

the journalist is taken aback at the other lady’s voice approaching her. and then afterwards, she laughs. “isn’t it a journalist’s job to chase danger?” she realizes skyler has probably no idea who she really is—a breath of fresh air from her previous experience, where people are as if stunned by the presence of a lowly gym leader like her.[break][break]

as they get closer into the suspected source, her castform puffs another clean cloud of air to clear the smog. towards the end of the hallway, weezings of various forms hover around the area, securing the entrances of what looks like an administrative office. the explosion, she surmises, might come from the attempt to unlock the door. criminals might be inside the room although their intentions still seem unclear.[break][break]

selena and skyler have a short window before the smog crawls back into their position. she wants them to take action as soon as possible. “now we know what’s causing the smoke, it’s time to use them for our advantage.”[break][break]

the kalosian feeds on the councilor’s words, nodding with great consideration of his clarifications. there is surprise when selena hears about the blacephalon being caught. it’s something she doesn’t know or maybe not allowed to know as a mere gym leader—but perhaps being an avatar puts her in a valuable position that grants her such exclusive information. but there’s something that doesn’t fit the narrative.[break][break]

“so... we don’t know who has the blacephalon?” fernando’s revelation poses a lot more questions than answers. her real concern, however, is if these theories will ever be tested by the time the war reaches its climax.[break][break]

her electric surge radiates brighter as they approach the heart of megalopolan camp. her careful strides stop at the sense of danger. “looks like this place is also sprawling with those metal cubes. a lot of metal cubes.”[break][break]
