he's consumed by the penumbra the moment he hears the purr of the engine and the chords of the van's music; a cold rushes that lurches him forth along the length of the cycling road railing, displaced, and neither here nor there. he flickers back into place moments later, a short distance behind the elite four and champion as the former veers off down the curvature of the road.

in those precious seconds, as his head spun with something between vertigo only exacerbated by adrenaline, dominic can't quite make out the minute detail of the guzzlord in front of them, but he can recognise the tell-tale whine of a HYPER BEAM. cursing under his breath, dominic moves west at the corner as the alcremie attached to him raises an optimistic PROTECT; although the guzzlord is aiming more toward the van than them based on where dominic can see it facing, he cannot be sure the of the attack's radius and whether it will clip him from where he stands. ready to take paltry cover behind whatever rubble he can find, dominic turns back to watch the van approach.

dominic realises the people inside won't hear him, but his pokemon should; he whistles to catch the attention of his togekiss, steelix and luxray and then gestures - a sharp flicker of his hand that means danger, move. the togekiss and steelix jerk violently to their left, away from the van and moving diagonally toward their trainer, and luxray follows after lifting itself with MAGNET RISE. as it flutters its wings, togekiss summons a METRONOME in the direction of the van and its occupants, hoping that whatever esoteric power it summons will be able to offer some protection.

before the hyper beam can be fired, but after the leaps of bailey's pokemon, the steelix will raise a STONE EDGE at the perimeter of the road where it curves; a makeshift and meagre attempt to stunt the guzzlord's attack with an angled, rock barrier.

maybe there's an atypical fondness in the way dominic regards the nidoqueen - his own first pokemon was a female nidoran, a long-forgotten fact buried under the rubble of memory. he never got to evolve her to her final form. there's a tight feeling in the back of his throat but he doesn't have a name to put to it - the closest thing would be bitterness.

his senses and reaction time dulled by his reminiscence, dominic fails to notice the venomous spurs of the nidoqueen until they bounce off his aegislash's KING'S SHIELD. the pokemon raises itself to defend him, and dominic quirks his mouth in a grateful half-smile.

the delcatty blinks slowly at the aurorus as it tries to use ENCORE, but seeing as it hadn’t used any moves yet, it just inclines its head sideways and regards the ice-type with amused confusion. still, apparently everyone is expecting it to do something, so the delcatty sighs and rises from its sitting position and lunges forward to snap at the armaldo before it can act with a FAKE OUT.

the gengar remains inside the delcatty’s shadow and, once it is brought closer to their opponents, the gengar will connect itself with the aurorus with an unfathomable, mystical force that manifests itself in a SKILL SWAP as its ability is taken away and replaced with gengar’s NORMALIZE.

dominic watches the scene play out, his expression impassive and his smile distant and meant for a moment that is not this. "you’re doing great," he drawls to his pokemon. from somewhere in the shadow, the gengar gives an impish cackle.

shaking off his initial surprise, dominic watches oscar’s pokemon dispatch two of the lycanroc with ease. fortunately, his gengar is quick to react, as though it had anticipated an assault before it happened; though it had no special forewarning, its eagerness for something to happen guided its actions.

the gengar is quick to fire off a SHADOW BALL from its parted jaw, sending the lycanroc flying backward from the gathered cluster of wooloo. as the lycanroc scrambles against the grass and mud to rise back onto its two feet, the gengar capitalises on the opportunity to giggle silently as it collects a handful of TOXIC sludge in its hands to throw at the wild pokemon.

although oscar’s pokemon seem to have the remaining duo under control, dominic flicks his wrist to release an excadrill as back-up. the pokemon squints against the light, but looks up to him expectantly nonetheless. "grab the one furthest up." the pokemon snaps its claws together and lunges into the dirt as it DIGS its way ahead, intending to grab at the same pokemon that the golisopod attacked.

the wooloos start bleating in unison at the commotion, and one of them bumps its head into dominic’s leg as if seeking reassurance. the underboss’s brow quirks into a frown and he firmly, but gently, pushes the pokemon away as he becomes suddenly conscious of how loud the herded pokemon can be.

dominic is sifting through the crates and storage containers below the deck when he sees gavin’s shadow appear in the doorway, followed by the sound of the man’s voice; clear and calm. dominic offers a non-committal hum in response, slamming down the lid of one wooden box with a little more force than necessary. he had expected pokemon capsules or energy-infused ore from meteor falls - the kind so highly sought for refinement by league and rocket alike - but he had come out wanting.

refusing to leave empty-handed, dominic rummages with more aggression, knocking boxes from shelves just to see the contents more quickly as it spills across the steel underfoot. his expression is set to a silent snarl because these people had decided to be absolutely fucking worthless to him in death as well as in life. coming across a stack of cases, dominic snaps one open and raises an appraising eyebrow when he sees that the interior is studded with carefully packaged pokeballs - their warmth and gravity tells him they’re filled, and he lifts the cases before ascending back to the deck.

dominic steps over a body and throws a case to gavin for him to catch, tone heavy with a dark mirth when he says, "plundered loot but i dunno what’s in ‘em. these fuckers really had nothing else." he scoffs and gives a shake of his head in disbelief as he brushes past gavin to make his way over to where the smoke billowed off the ship, a heavy dark plume heralding where he had left his houndoom. with no living targets remaining, the pokemon prowled across the deck aimlessly - its fur licked by the remnants of flame and its maw twisted into a perpetual snarl. dominic returns it to its capsule and whistles to summon his hydreigon from where it hovered in the sky above them.
