He sat and listened to the lot the league's heavy hitters, watching his daughter, a sleeping bean in a meowth onesie.

Ever so often her pacifier fidgeted and she wriggled in the arms of her uncle, but just as soon as she'd start up, she was still again.

It made sense that she wasn't much disturbed in his care; she was Cait's kid and Viridians were part tree or something.

He listened to the back and forths concerning their reluctant genocide while studying the patterns of his daughter's breathing.

When it was time to vote on locations he made an angling to keep Fortree off the list. Losing Cinnabar Island and losing the entirety of Kanto thereafter defined him in ways he was still working through today, even in this very moment.

It was an easy instinct to lean into; sparing his three girls the fate he lived with.

He wrote his choices down on a paper square and flipped it over to ponder while there was still some small amount of time.

With most of the others gone by now the Head Ranger patrolled the beach turning any stragglers from the Eel swarm back to the sea.

Try as he might to avoid getting bitten by one of these squiggly shockers, a handful of them still made a lunge for him if their mouths got close enough.

He finally ran across someone he didn't feel the urge to dunk.

He remembered the face of mint frost (if not the (fake) name) from a shift he covered at a bar in Sootopolis last year.

Mint Mojito, dry, extra mint, if he recalled correctly.

He gave the ball a real throw but wasn't much disappointed that he missed.

If he kept failing at the second most difficult trick move, it was only natural he move on to the most difficult of all.

Either he was going to pull off a proper Magikarp Splash, or his heavy body was going to splash the water itself.

"Maybe we should get married sooner." It was the only part of him that he would allow any sort of doubt about the coming meteor.

The part that wanted to be locked into harmonious union in the most officiated way before they were sent to the other side.

Surely Arceus would let a married couple and their cubs dwell in the same circles of the afterlife.

More likely though, Sénon was going to make himself complicit in the destruction of that other world; Sea-Hoenn as they had taken to calling it.

"Of course I hate the idea of rushing something so momentous."

A thought came to him that seemed to steal away his resolve for only a moment.

For all the time that had passed since the incident he hadn't really talked much about what happened to him.

Even still, he guessed Cait read the mission reports while he was hospitalized. Meaning she knew who he ran into visiting that seaworld. "Do you think the two of them, on the other side, married?"

He didn't stir at the sound of her footfalls.

By now he recognized her approach by sound alone. The weight of each step on the cabin flooring and the pace of steps told him it was her.

Zeraora and Zarude were waved away into the night to find their own distractions. Jūken, ever-still the Head Ranger's bodyguard, kept close.
Though, Zarude wouldn't wander far from the twins.

As per its responsibilities among their massive pack.

At the feel of Cait's shoulder against his own arm, it expanded automatically, wrapping itself around her, bringing her under his immediate protection.

He still hated the hot summer nights in Hoenn, but if he was going to overheat it was better to do it with the feeling of her skin on his, her scent on his.

"Nah." He stared at the twinklings in the night sky. "We got all the time in the world." His voice never wavered through a single word or syllable.

No matter what came, he would see his family through it.

As he sat on the cabin steps his elevated body heat lifted from his frame like vapors from a hot meal on a hot plate in a cold room.

Although in this case the room was almost as hot as the plate was.

It took some work to get all three of the girls to sleep at the same time. Enca and Primrose were easy to put down; feed them, play with them, exhaust them, change them, feed them again, they were out.

Cait was the one who took most of the effort.

She seemed to run on endless energy now that she had achieved Mommy Mode but even she needed a proper release.

It was a touchy thing to invoke that release without waking the twins in another room, his hand covering Cait's mouth went a long way to keep what happened in their room from spilling out into the rest of the cabin.

He made his own satisfaction a non-factor; it was her vindication he sought. Knowing Cait's buttons as he did, he found her vindication, and then found it again.

Post union, he kissed her lips goodbye as he left her to cool off on the front porch in the evening heat.

For three hours he sat with Jūken, Zeraora and Zarude

Having nailed a blindfolded throw, it was only natural to try it again.

He missed, but he wasn't deterred to stop throwing blind balls, nor would he be until he accidentally hit a bystander in the face with a fastball.
