THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

The three of them stand in a mountainous valley. Despite the wind playing with Milo's hair, everything felt so... sterile. Washed in sepia tones, defeating the purpose of his all black and white outfit.

Spires jut out from the ground off in the distance, piercing the sky. The three of them hiked, and eventually reached a dip. A place of flat ground. No threat of a rolled ankle. And... a seal affixed to a spire in the middle of the plain?

Milo stepped onto a platform, trying to get to even footing. He felt thin air fail to refresh him, looking aside at his more experienced companions. Beyond their plain, there was a trail winding down.

"...Are we getting closer?"

Derek is familiar with this place. The vivid sensations of envy, hatred and bitterness. Drawing closer to the seal only increases how hard these feelings are pulled out of him, to the point that the ranger is irritated by their inquiry. "Tch. Look, will ya?"

An index finger rises to point out the seal fixated upon the spire-like tree. It resembles the others in some manner, so he assumes this must be it. "That's what they look like."

Derek allows his Steelix to be fielded, stepping up on it's head. That it may raise him to inspect the seal more closely. Really he was just looking for those dead leaves...

Nope. Didn't seem to be any up here. Oh well.

Wasn't like he knew what they were for. Could've just been blown around at random by the wind. Not that he noticed much of that in this place. Curious.

As the trio hiked towards the Jubokko Tree, Thomas reflected on what he saw at the base of the mountainside, and behind the waterfall on the previous trips. Strange, bitter leaves in the first one, and the white hot remnants of the second seal. He wondered what they could mean, and what they were supposed to be sealing.

As they stepped inside, Thomas saw nothing at first. Then, a cold feeling of pure hatred crept up. The Kalosian was all too familiar with hatred, but this felt different. It felt wrong.

Before they could edit, a wall of ice formed over the exit.

"Shit!", Thomas called out, before turning to see a phantom of a large, lean, saber-toothed feline manifest in the middle of the area.

"What the hell is that!?", Thomas asked the group.

The Kalosian prided himself on his knowledge of Pokemon species. He had religiously kept up to date with discoveries of new species through various journals. But this strange phantom cat was something he had never seen before.

The strange feline immediately formed an Ice Shard, which hurdled towards Thomas. The Kalosian barely had time to bring out Ripper to defend him. The Scizor grunted in pain from the attack. He would look down, noticing the shard of ice left quite a mark on his exoskeleton.

Whatever this thing was, it hit considerably hard.

The three of them stood under the tree, which towered over them. The rest of the ravine had a sterility to it, but this tree felt more like a hibernating, living thing. Comatose. They drew closer to it, leading Milo's eyes to trail up its trunk.

The feeling that hit him all at once was something like a pencil being driven between his eyebrows. A splitting headache, slowly melting away what few scruples he had left. However, the three of them were halted in their tracks by what looked to be a great jungle cat. The thing towered over the three of them. The urge to dig his heels in and die fighting was sharpened by the tree, but even this faltered in the face of a monster out for blood.

While Thomas bore the brunt of its first attack, Milo marveled at the clear frostbite on Scizor. He called his Greninja, his best option for running interference. However, even hearing the two of them enter the fray lead Chien Pao to send another Ice Shard down the field. Greninja was struck, one arm turning white and going stiff. Its breaths came sharper and shallower. Greninja tried to retaliate with a Smokescreen, to deter whatever came next.

"...I thought you'd know. Whatever it is, running isn't an option."

"It's just a spirit." A strong one at that, though not so much as to deter Derek from confronting the creature. It wasn't like they came all the way out here to run, right? "The goal remains the same. Fend it off." Sliding down the rocky back of his steelix, the steel type that'd been standing tall came crashing with all it's weight in the form of a body press.

It was a devastating blow for ? ? ? (Chien Pao), both it's vessel and the mantle of this plane suffering from the fissure that came of Xol's attack. Little did the three of them know, their actions warranted investigation from the shadows. They would be upon them soon enough...

For a spirit, it was strong. Thomas dreaded the idea of finding the physical form of whatever this thing was.

Another Ice Shard came barreling towards the Scizor. This time, he managed to counter it with a Bullet Punch of his own. Despite this, signs of frostbite began to show up on his pincer.

That was when Thomas remembered the Cleansing Tag. If the Spirit Tag acted as a lure for such spirits, then surely, the Cleansing Tag could be used to repel this thing.

He would motion to Milo, hoping to get him closer. "Me and Ripper can hold this thing off! Try to ward it off with this!", he told Milo, handing him the Cleansing Tag.

He would send out Mordred the Ceruledge to help join in on the fight.

The three of them stood around Chien Pao, this thing that towered over them, and had seemingly no trouble fighting all of them at once. In either case, Derek's Steelix and Scizor held it off well enough. Thomas then offered a tag to Milo. It acted as a brief reprieve from that madness inducing headache, and his eyes widened.

"Thanks. Just keep it occupied, and I'll get in there."

In either case, the opening those two left was getting smaller by the second. Milo dashed, just outside of that great tiger's field of vision. He leapt, and tried to slap the side of it with the cleansing tag.

"Good idea." Derek mentions over towards the two, one of which passing off a special tag to the other.

"Xol, let's pin it down!"

Using it's lumbering frame once more, the body press would leverage the Steelix's weight against their opponent after a barrage from Thomas' pokemon. The cleansing tag would undoubtedly find it's mark, causing the spirit's form to wither and fade. Yet more trouble seemed to be headed their way.

A group of shadows encroach. Their forms and movements morph drastically. Derek isn't sure what to make of it, other than assuming there might be something else watching nearby. Perhaps the vessel of that infernal spirit?

"Looks like we're just getting started." This visit was proving more troublesome than his previous visits. Whatever the case, it was becoming rather evident there was more battling to be had. The shadow grew in size to match the steel serpent, even capable of replicating Xol's shadow rave. The attack would threaten Derek's pokemon, as well as the others caught in it's wake.

As the Steelix pinned down the mysterious phantom, Mordred would rush in, and hack at the creature with Bitter Blades. Ripper would lunge at the creature with a Bullet Punch. All to keep it occupied, while Milo used the Cleanse Tag to banish it.

Things were far from over, as the exit had yet to be unsealed, and mysterious shadows manifested themselves. One of them became a copy of Thomas himself, who beckoned him towards him.

A challenge to hand to hand combat.

Thomas would gesture for Ripper and Mordred to hang back, as he stepped up to fight his doppelganger.

Thomas took multiple swings at the shadow of himself, first attempting to wind it with a strike to the midsection, before going for the head. But each strike was dodged or deflected expertly, before the shadow unleashed a forceful kick to Thomas' midsection, sending him flying back, and hitting the ground on his back.

The Shadow would follow up by attempting to go in for the kill. Once it got close enough, Thomas caught it with a kick to the midsection with both of his feet, before rolling his legs inward, sending the shadow flying foward.

Thomas would use the momentum to kick himself up, and back to his feet. The shadow would land with a forward roll, before dashing towards the real Thomas again, taking swings at the man. Thomas would dodge and deflect the blows, before finally finding an opening, and kicking his shadowy doppelganger in the perrenal nerve, bringing it down to its knees.

Thomas would follow this up by getting behind the shadow, and put it in a chokehold. The shadow would struggle desperately, until Thomas managed to snap the shadow's neck, causing it to drop, and to dissippate.

Upon the dissippation of the shadow, something manifested, something watched the fight play out.

The three of them were cornered, all at once, by men who looked exactly like them. The specifics of Milo's situation were a little different. He felt powerless to help the handicapped Thomas, but his attention was grabbed all at once. A freshly tattooed BOY of about seventeen in a skater's attire sneered at him.

"Just by lookin' at you, I can tell you train competitively. That's no life for these creatures to live. I'm gonna set 'em free."

Milo clenched his teeth so hard, they almost popped. This teeny-bopper, this fake punk barking at him... why, that was him. Using a grandiose justification for erratic behavior. Now 23, he looked to Derek and rolled his eyes, trying to signal to his boys that he isn't like that anymore. He then shouted back at the boy.

"Other people are gonna bail you out when you do something stupid. Over and over. And you can't even fit a whole person in your head. She doesn't have the nerve to say it yet, but Madeleine's only with you to piss off her parents."

The two squared off, both letting loose their Zweilous. Both of Milo started with Work Up, watching the dragon's muscles swell. They had that "get it over with" instinct in spades.

Lacking the martial prowess that Thomas exercises against his shadowself, the ranger's bout devolves into a much more primal contest. Desperate, all-or-nothing esque strikes are milimeters shy of the silhouette that slyly operates just outside of Derek's reach.

And unlike him, the shadow doesn't tire. While Derek exerts himself, the shadow made in his image works hard to capitalize on the fragility of the physical being. Fatigue builds, and the thing refuses to relent as Derek attempts to back off and catch his breath.

"Fuck." It was a wonder he had the time to complain. "When did I become a black bel-ouf!!!" It only takes one. His thoughts and focus are gone as soon as the ebon fist meets at the cheekbone, sending the ranger spinning to the ground.

Proceeding to pick Derek up by the back of his hair, it prepares to snap the ranger's neck like Thomas had his clone. Like a child, it was experimenting. Imitating. Learning. But for some reason it thought he was the only threat...?

As Derek's gaze lifted, he could see the Steelix of his observing their match. He can't help but look confused. "Why aren't you helping again?" He was a pokemon trainer, after all. Not someone who trained their hands to be a weapon.

To his dismay, the earth power that would save Derek's neck would also send him flying into the air as well. However, scaling the air in different directions, it would be the shadow's imitation of the ranger that found itself skewered by the following shadow rave.

Gathering himself after a graceless tumble to the ground, Derek stands to find a little fiery eyed gremlin staring him down. Like an angry child, who just watched someone break their favorite toy...

The strange shadow-like creature gestured to Thomas to challenge it to battle. Mordred would accept the challenge, stepping up to the small Pokemon.

"Be careful, Mordred. This one might look small, but that doesn't mean they won't be formidable.", he cautioned the Ceruledge.

The Ceruledge nodded, before disappearing with Phantom Force. It would attempt to land a sneak attack on the Marshadow, only for it to disappear into the shadows, before reemerging behind the black knight.

With an angry grunt, the Ceruledge swiped at the Marshadow with his Bitter Blade, only for the Marshadow to duck into the shadows again. This time, it would reemerge with a Shadow Punch uppercut, sending the Ceruledge flying back several feet.

Thomas watched the fight, concentrating on how the Marshadow moved. He would realize that the strange Pokemon moved by utilizing Shadow Sneak to dodge out of the path of attacks.

Once more, the Ceruledge attempted to hack away at the Marshadow with Bitter Blade, only for the ghost to dodge, and to reappear behind him, and smack him on the back in a mock display of Assurance.

The Ceruledge got to one knee, glowering at the Marshadow.

"Mordred, that's enough!", he called out to the Ceruledge, before recalling him, and switching him out for his Alakazam, Freke.

"Time to change tactics.", the Kalosian muttered, pulling out a pocket watch. Upon opening, it would reveal a Keystone in the center of the clockface. Thomas pressed down on it, which caused the Alakazam's Mega Stone to react to it, forming a cocoon around him.

Emerging from the cocoon was a Mega Alakazam.

Thomas would channel his bond with the Psychic-type in order to unleash its Z-Move, Psy-Tempest.

The Alakazam would summon a psionic storm that would sweep the area around them, before concentrating its fury on the Marshadow. The Gloomdweller would attempt to dodge, only to find itself unable to escape the eye of the storm, which practically brutalized the Fighting-type.

In the aftermath of the Psy-Tempest, the field would take on a Psychic Terrain. The Marshadow would attempt to duck into the Shadows again, only to find itself blocked off from doing so, as the Alakazam unleashed Expanding Force across the field.

The Psychic Terrain would cause the attack to gain wide reach, sweeping up the battered Marshadow. In a last act of defiance, the Gloomdweller would unleash a quick Shadow Punch at the Alakazam, causing it to hiss in pain. Despite this, the Alakazam would unleash a point-blank Expanding Force at the Marshadow, bringing it down.

"Good work, Freke!", Thomas called out.

Derek and Thomas went ahead. While Milo cleared the way, he felt all too certain that he'd hold them back, if he followed. And that left him with... this boy.

"..."

The younger Milo heard his tirade, and was left speechless. He then ran forward, and crouched at the last second. When he sprang off his feet to try and tackle him, Milo caught him just under each shoulder, catching him in a front-headlock and letting his knees hit the ground.

"We're gonna keep getting in our own way. Over and over. People are gonna feel sorry for you, in a few years."

The elder Milo's Zweilous used Outrage, thrashing around while the other dragon prepared. It was like getting in someone's face to make them flinch, followed by an actual series of wild swings. Each strike landed with a thud, like a door being slammed.
