A vicious thunderstorm was brewing north of Rustboro City, on the plateau near the west entrance to Meteor Falls. The air that far up was so dry that its rain evaporated back into the sky before touching the ground. Gusts of wind howled through, trees creaking in its wake. Rangers urged people to remain indoors due to the storm having a history of destructive winds and dangerous lightning. And what was Josh doing?

He was in his Jolteon's saddle, wearing his SYGNA SUIT and sitting next to his bonded Pokémon, Saber. Many of his electric steeds were around him, their paws, talons, and hooves glowing lightning yellows and whites. Josh's studies of electric Pokémon had taught him that in the presence of a natural thunderstorm, electric Pokémon could travel at far higher speeds than normal. The more intense the storm was, the faster the speed boost.

In particular, his saddle-wearing Kilowattrel looked ready to soar, his wings crackling with every flap. Holding his Jolteon's reins firmly, the Gym Leader circled his Manectric, Luxray, Zeraora, Zebstrika, and Kilowattrel once before lining up next to them again. "This is gonna be really fun!" Josh smiled, already feeling the Jolteon's legs flexing backward in preparation to enter a low leap at her rider's command.

The aggressive Onix was the Gym Leader's worst nightmare. With a squad of Electric-type Pokémon and staring down a Pokémon the Jolteon could not easily pass due to its sheer size, the impulsive Gym Leader could only think of one way to defeat the Pokémon. Reaching for two Poké Balls, Josh hurled the one that came from his belt toward the ground-type Onix. Raikiri emerged from the capsule and reared like a feline about to pounce its tall prey. "Overload it, Raikiri! HYPERSONIC..."

Not even getting a chance to warm up, the excited Zeraora faced the wild head-on. Its ROCK THROW crawled toward the thundercat by comparison to what Josh's mythical partner was about to put on display. A wicked lightning bolt struck the feline's body, his VOLT ABSORB empowering what was to come.

"...PLASMA CHARGE!!!"



In one frame of Josh's eyesight, the Zeraora lunged toward the Onix. In the next, he appeared on the serpent's other side, a line of lightning bolts striking in the space between. Even the boulder-hewn creature's grounded tail could not protect it from the Z-Move's blinding discharge, let alone the sonic boom that came from Raikiri outrunning his own shockwave. While the Gym Leader hurled his other Poké Ball in the Onix's direction, the shock wave may have reached Zekrom by now, perhaps drawing its attention toward Remiel and Josh.

Josh had to periodically put pressure on Blinky's reins to hold her still; with how powerful of a thunderstorm that was rolling through thanks to Zekrom's BOLT STRIKE, she wanted to run. While it may not have been well-known, Josh's racing background gave him insight to many electric Pokémon having enhanced speed in stormy weather. He relished the opportunity to ride his Zeraora in a dry thunderstorm, though he wasn't going to deny the Jolteon the chance.

The trainer's voice, and the presence of the dragon he had never seen, caught his attention. He approached the large Pokémon. "Oh hey, Remiel!" the Gym Leader greeted the royal. "Wow, that's one slick ride you have there! I've never seen a Pokémon like that before!" He may have been more respectful if he knew he was in the presence of the divine...

"I've never heard of Zekrom before," Josh replied. "Electric Pokémon, especially riding electric Pokémon, are some of my favorites!" He watched the legendary black dragon battle the Morelull, in awe as the TERAVOLT energy completely overwhelmed the wild. "Such power..." he gasped. "I can tell that none of my Pokémon would be a match for your Zekrom. Not even Raikiri," he pointed toward the Zeraora, who remained humble around the lightning god.

Josh smiled as the Exacting asked him his purpose for being out in the dry thunderstorm. "As someone who loves going fast, I'll take any chance I can get to bring my Pokémon out in this kind of weather. When there's a thunderstorm outside, it raises the top speed of electric Pokémon, letting them run faster than they normally do. I'm saving the run on Raikiri for last, but I bet Blinky here could outrun even Entei in weather like this!" The compliment got the Jolteon pumped, sparks flying from her paws. Once Josh squeezed her sides, she was gonna fly through the plateau. "Your Zekrom looks especially fast." The glowing tail was especially intriguing. Perhaps they used electricity as a direct propellant?

"I'm aware," Josh smirked as the striped Pokémon bolted toward a spot where charge was building in the air. "Raikiri is a Pokémon I don't use lightly. I love him, but I know how strong--" As if on cue, a massive thunderclap pounded the ears of everyone present, the quadrupedal feline energized by the lightning strike that preceded it. Full of energy, Josh's Pokémon slid to Blinky's side in a flash. "As I was saying, I know how strong he is. I'm sure he'll see me through the Pokémon League."

Josh's eyes shifted toward Zekrom, then Remiel. "Such majesty and power, though. I wonder what kind of speed your Zekrom is capable of in such a storm?" Blinky sounded another crackled cry, the Jolteon full of energy and looking ready to run at wild speeds enabled by the inclement weather. Another nearby lightning strike raised all of his mount's quills, Josh thankful for the guard on the front of her saddle protecting him from being spiked. "I'm trying to hold her back, but she really wants to run!"
