Josh did indeed remember Melody's challenge rules. How could he forget? He had such a close battle with the Elite Four member last time. The Gym Leader took his place in the challenger's trainer box, remaining seated on his Zeraora as he hurled two Poké Balls containing his prized aerial Pokémon toward the battle court's center. Within emerged Bladestorm, the screeching Metal Menace, and Verte, an energetic Flygon whose wings were already humming like an insect's. They were still fast, but they weren't as all-in on speed as Josh's last team.

"Of course I took your advice! I've got a completely new team this time around," Josh bragged as he waited for the match's judge to give the signal to begin. Melody, too, was using a brand new team. Since their last match, Josh had been put in many uncomfortable spots that required him to not rely entirely on the speed he was known for. It would be easy for Josh's Pokémon to get the jump on Melody's, but would it matter? That Leavenny in particular looked tough as nails.

"Now let's make this a match to remember. kyle lopez and Entei are waiting, after all."

Melody, too, had brought a completely different set of Pokémon: rather than the water-types she was known for, she had two grass-types that were more than ready to take advantage of the hot weather the Cherrim had baked the now-steaming battleground with. Though the Leavanny's CHLOROPHYLL had denied Josh his speed advantage, he still had the mobility advantage. That mobility advantage was one he would press. "Bladestorm, STEALTH ROCK!"

The move was less Stealth Rocks and more Stealth Blades, Bladestorm shedding two of his many wing blades to serve as the heat-seeking projectiles floating around the idol's side of the chamber. The Metal Menace would be able to easily deflect any Solar Beams headed his way, giving the Gym Leader ample time to continue restricting the foe's space to maneuver.

The nimble Leavanny landed right on Verte's back, right between the scale-marks where his back was. As much as the LEAF BLADE to the back hurt, the insectile dragon's scales repelled the attack some. The next one would certainly be aimed at the Flygon's neck, and that was something Josh could not allow. "Gotcha, Melody," he grinned as a shriek came from Verte's now-invisible wings.

Without a saddle to mitigate the BUG BUZZ, the vibration coursing through the Flygon reached earthquake levels, and the shrieking wings threatened to ravage the grass-type's hearing organs. Verte swerved toward the Cherrim in an effort to shred the grass-type's leaves with the high-frequency buzzing and dislodge his unwanted rider.

Even Bladestorm was not totally immune from some of the fiercest vibration Verte could muster. Josh could feel a tingling sensation even with the distance between him and his Pokémon. How did Shalin withstand that? Even with a Sygna Suit, being shaken around on a wing moving that fast was just so hard to believe. The mangled Leavanny's STRING SHOT into X-SCISSOR blindsided Verte, digging deeper into his wounds from the LEAF BLADE. The pain left the Flygon unable to remain airborne, landing in the center of the battleground upright but with a loud thud.

It wasn't over yet, though; despite Cherrim's FLOWER SHIELD, there was one way for Verte to dissolve it and do real damage. While he could no longer fly, his wings could still roar. "Full speed, Verte!" Josh cried, barely audible over the squeal the wings made. That squeal led to the wings' pitch growing ever higher. Blood splattered from the wounds between Verte's wings as their tips went supersonic in a BOOMBURST. The wind was so powerful that it even caught the SPIKES Bladestorm was shedding from his body, turning them into a whirlwind of deadly projectiles. The blood loss did leave Verte in awful shape, though; even a glancing blow would fell him now.

The AERIAL ACE from Melody's Leavenny was precise, yet merciful; it took only a glancing blow to incapacitate the Flygon, and that was all it delivered. That was the difference between the two: though they were both fierce combatants, the Mauville Leader's ambition was so great, and his Pokémon's will to fuel that ambition likewise, that they were not afraid to hurt themselves to get the job done.

Melody was right.

There were red smears all over the fallen dragon's wings, the shockwave from its immensely powerful attack having sprayed evidence of its own injury outward. He withdrew his Flygon, raised the Poké Ball to his head level, and said in a quiet voice that may have been just loud enough for the Elite Four to hear, "Verte, I know how badly you want to win for me. But please... take care of yourself first. Please..."

Clipping the collapsed Flygon's Poké Ball to his belt, the Master of Faster reached for a second, hurling it as close to Ariel as he could. A bright green Gogoat emerged from within, sounding a gruff cry as his golden horns gleamed in the limelight.

The Metal Menace continued soaring near the rafters, shedding a second layer of SPIKES that the wakes of his ultrafast Pokémon would certainly blow around. The trap hadn't quite been set yet, but it was close. There was one more step to be had before he could do so. That bug-type needed to go. "Nitro, AERIAL ACE," an uncharacteristically calm, yet firm, command fame from the Gym Leader's mouth. With speed only a Gogoat raised by the Gym Leader could reach, the grass-type lunged toward the weakened Leavenny in an attempt to remove it from the battle. Reciprocating Melody's mercy, Nitro would aim for a glancing blow, for that was all Josh felt was needed.

Josh pumped a fist at Nitro's precise yet merciful strike, goring the Leavenny with just enough power to knock it unconscious. He had the upper hand, and he was going to press that advantage as long as he could. That advantage would end the moment a Skeledirge came out of Melody's final Poké Ball, goading Bladestorm into an ENCORE. While he soared out of range of melee attacks and continued to shed SPIKES, it made the Primarina's PSYCHIC attack all the stronger.

Many of the SPIKES bounced off Bladestorm's metal down. The raining projectiles pelted Nitro from all directions, completely clearing Melody's end of the battleground from the carefully-laid minefield and scattering them randomly about the Gym Leader's side.

That would not do at all.

"Nitro, EARTHQUAKE." There was a calm, yet serious, demeanor Melody may have never seen from Mauville's Master of Faster before. Mayhaps it was respect for the two legendary Pokémon staring him down, particularly Cobalion, the Sword of Iron Will. The SPIKES forced the Shiny Gogoat to use a weaker version of his ground-shaking attack, merely rearing and slamming his hooves into the earth instead of leaping skyward to do so. Even if the blow did not render the fire-type unable to battle, perhaps it would disrupt the singer enough to free the Metal Menace from the clutches of their ENCORE. Josh also banked on it more evenly distributing the SPIKES over the battlefield.

Melody's duet wiped out Josh's advantage; microscopic crystals from Ariel's ICY WIND compromised the flight surfaces of the gliding steel-type's wings. "Bladestorm, snap out of it! Use your ROCK SLIDE!" No such attack came; even when on a collision course with the arena floor, all the Metal Menace could do was shed more of his SPIKES, slowly restoring Melody's side of the battleground to how it was before her Primarina used the last wave of them as projectile weapons.

The out-of-control bird crashed into the flames of Louis' TORCH SONG. Whether by intent or happenstance, she had shielded Nitro from an otherwise match-ending attack. Josh was losing control of the battle. Not wanting to bear the agony of losing to the Unwavering a second time, he squinted, in a zen state not unlike the one during his racing challenges. As nice of a leader as she was, and as talented as she was, he wasn't going to let her steal this match from under his nose.

This was his moment to shine.

Feeling the trainer's energy, even Raikiri snarled, startling Josh as he suddenly reared to cheer Nitro on. His paws crackled with fireworks-like electricity after Josh withdrew the fallen and exhausted Skarmory, hurling forward the Poké Ball containing his own water-type: Snacker the Sharpedo.

The young rider's next move could easily determine the outcome of the battle. Not one to hum and haw over a complex plan of action, he was one to trust his instincts. As much as he was uncertain the speedy shark could withstand even a single Sparkling Aria from the alto, it was a chance he had to take. Louis was too much of a threat to completely ignore. "Nitro, HORN LEECH."

Lowering his horns, the grass-type faced Ariel to ram and trample the fairy-type. Landing a clean hit would be more difficult than the Leader was used to, his stiffness from the ICY WIND reducing his speed to that of a typical Gogoat. Not slow by any stretch, but not the blistering speed Melody may have been used to from the Mauville Leader. The dark-type took advantage of the waterfalls on the arena's edges, swimming up one of them before attempting to crash into Louis to LIQUIDATE them.
