Suicune's appearance sealed their fate, the final puzzle piece to Nomi's plan. It had cost Isaac Merlo to oppose Elisabeth Fiorelli so defiantly, however - for his name was now etched into the tablets of ruin, a beacon of resentment so bright Nomi could see it across the battlefield like a terrible, ominous star.[break][break]
They are coming.[break][break]
It was the same warning, a split-second of foreshadowing, and her eyes flashed white as she looked ahead - to where her various hidden sentries were watching the many entrances in and out of the cave system. Above, Kallistatus prepared a beam of HIDDEN POWER. And then, through wind and water, decaying petals and shards of crystal, the triad appeared.[break][break]
Six agents had been sent this time - black clad and masked - the symbol of their order sewn onto their chests. Nomi steadied herself against a boulder, summoning a layer of blue crystals around herself - a weaker mimicry of Zev Harcourt's black armor - but enough to protect her long enough for Kallistatus to transform.[break][break]
The shiny Unown-K released its attack, then retreated to Nomi's side, where it began to resonate with the Tera shards embedded in the walls of the cave. Nebulas of silver light glittered across its symbolic body as it terstallized.[break][break]
"The DRK Triad is here!" She announced to all present, loud enough for her voice to carry. "They've come to kill us all! League or Rocket, it makes no difference."[break][break]

Enemy Unown descend upon them, striking with terrible hidden power. Navy made the mistake of underestimating the Unown once. Never again. A mega stone fixed to his wristwatch glows with power. Navy and Hattori share an ironclad battle bond, coaxing the little frog to push himself past his limits.[break][break]
As he bathes in infinity energy, the frog’s strength is renewed. For just a moment, he forgets the barren land beneath his feet. He forgets the intricate politics of the humans. All he knows is that his Lord wishes for no one here to die.[break][break]
His water shuriken are large fans now, moving with the speed of a swooping Talonflame. They splash at the enemy Unown and those who command them alike. A smoke bomb explodes, the resulting smokescreen adding an extra element of confusion.[break][break]
“Yo, Isaac! Let’s get out of here.” It behooves them all to take out a few of their enemies, retreat, and lick their wounds. Even a woman lost in the madness of old grudges and hate can see nothing will productive will come of the fight.[break][break]
He prays Isaac did not pay too high a price for the time they bought.

He, Navy, and Nomi could stand as one while Lis either played along or took opportunistic potshots. They could stand tall over interlopers from beyond this universe, and then try to make a point about unity that would fall on willfully deaf ears.[break][break]

This time, things were different. Isaac just made the list.[break][break]

Did Lis have a grudge against Isaac, or against his patron? Or was the grudge against what the two working in concert represented, the idea that even an abandoned street rat with stains on his soul and a gun to his head could rise above his fate? He defied the odds that she'd sold her soul to avoid, and broken the chains that she swore were her own tether. So long as he lived, he was an acute reminder that Elisabeth Fiorelli had died long ago. All that remained was decay, a death row prisoner of her own device.[break][break]

Isaac had tried that life out for himself. He'd half expected to rot in Rocket's clutches forever. He'd set himself on fire to be a light in the darkness and let better, more deserving people like Ashley Shepard stomp him into the muck so they could escape its rise. It was a foolish endeavor. All he did was give them a false sense of comfort as they all succumbed to Rocket's clutches.[break][break]

To think Lis had chosen the same, pitiful fate for her one woman show. She was the victimized maiden, the matron's justifications, and the torturous crone all in one.[break][break]

She and Wo-Chien spoke as one, a hungering legion that demanded absolution. The air between the two of them grew thin and strained. For each second they stood there, their energy was forfeit. Suicune's knee buckled ever so slightly, icy mists spreading between their fangs as they clenched them tight. Part of them twanted revenge. Part of them knew now was not the time and place. This time it was Isaac's turn to comfort them setting a hand on Suicune's flank. Soothing green light passed between the two, the legend taking a shuddering breath.[break][break]

It wasn't worth it.[break][break]

All the while, Akane held the line. The Iron Thorns targeted the manifesting Unown with relentless precision, array after array of Pin Missiles raining down on the Dark Triad's setries. Kalistarius' bright blue color was Nomi's last act of kindness; it at least allowed Isaac to avoid any friendly fire. It wasn't until Hattori's Smokescreen filled the chamber that her vigil ended.[break][break]

Isaac's agreement was silent. He set his other hand on Navy's shoulder, then took a deep breath. He took one step, two steps, then finally three, carrying Hoenn's newest Elite away on the northern wind. To Nomi and Lis, it would seem like he was being spirited away, all while Isaac and Suicune had disappeared entirely.[break][break]

"I'm nobody's but my own. And neither are you," the disappeared Isaac said. As he spoke, a chill encircled Elisabeth, as if he was circling around her at this very moment. "But if you want to find me, you know where I'll be." With that, he was gone, leaving only a quiet echo bouncing off of the walls of Area Zero.[break][break]

As Nomi and Navy fretted over this twist in Isaac's fate, he welcomed it with open arms.[break][break]

The indignant fury of her screams tore through the ensuring RUINATION that followed, cleaving through the sea of enemy Unown and robed figures in vain. Now nothing more than wind dissipating with Michael Navidson's SMOKESCREEN, Isaac Merlo vanished into thin air as if he had never existed here at all.[break][break]

Again and again Elisabeth struck blindly at the DRK Triad that had gathered here, tangling vines diving through bolts of dark energy to take the heat of her unfed GRUDGES. Unsatisfied and irritable, all she wanted was to release the misery inside of herself, pent-up and waiting for the TABLETS OF RUIN to justify their release.[break][break]

And what better target than the DRK Triad themselves, who'd dared to make an enemy of her by targeting the one person she cared for more than herself?[break][break]

Drunk on rage, she might have stayed here fighting until the forces eventually overwhelmed her; emotion blinded her, leaving her unable to see their odds for what they were.[break][break]

The rationality of that response would be Naomi Sato's, not her own.[break][break]

Kallistatus summoned an astral TERA BLAST, preventing two of the DRK Triad agents from attempting to follow after Michael Navidson and Isaac Merlo. It wasn't that Nomi really thought they'd be able to catch the north wind: it was just not in her nature to take any chances. She watched them go with tired eyes, feeling the weight of their good fortune for having run into her rather than two antagonistic Rockets, staring down the uphill battle that was convincing the rest of Rocket to lay off the faction conflict in favor of the greater war.[break][break]
A war that Elisabeth Fiorelli was doing a fine job of fighting, unhinged though she was in her unbridled rage. Bodies fell, wrapped up in shadowy vines that sapped their energy, blood dripping from cuts made by festering thorns.[break][break]
It would not be enough, however. Two more Triad assassins leapt from the underbrush to replace their fallen comrades, and for a heartbeat Nomi wondered if she ought to leave Elisabeth here to reckon with whatever destiny Arceus had in store for her - for having allied herself with ruination itself.[break][break]
Would doing so increase the chances of Hoenn's survival, or further damn them with the loss of an Avatar?[break][break]
Tapu Fini is out there somewhere, Nomi remembered, recalling the recent study she'd conducted on Elisabeth Fiorelli. It still has some part to play.[break][break]
Mind - and heart - made up, Nomi dashed across the cavern until she had reached Elisabeth. Doing her best to ignore Wo-Chien, who reeked of resentment, she grabbed hold of the Rocket Underboss's arm, even as she flailed to direct another attack at the DRK Triad.[break][break]
"Time to go, Elisabeth," Nomi murmured softly, preparing to teleport them to safety.[break][break]
And then they were gone.[break][break]
