dragnor was his kingdom in this world. he was a ruler- one recognized by both players and the system. he thrived in this game, and to watch it die prematurely dampened his mood by then.

everything remained as he had left it after it was closed down during its update event. even the kingdom of sylvis, the new region that opened up and ironically, the one that tore down the game, stood tall in this virtual reality that exists in his dreams.

tears in space that reveal a series of ones and zeroes behind them can be found on the select areas of the region. he wonders if it was there when he first went, then he realizes that perhaps the update was bugged from the start, and the closure never unintentional as they claimed.

his legs bring him to the very castle that housed the last setting that he saw in the game. his last memory included a skirmish with a knight and their doppelgangers— a description eerily similar to a previous experience. armed with wings of thunder and a firearm of ice, he enters the building for the second time.

a trashed palace greets him, just as they have left it. silence stirs as the only noise entering his ears are the quiet footsteps he makes, as well as buzzing noises of a static screen.

further along, the throne invites the ruler of the neighboring kingdom, ready to be conquered. kyle approaches it. what catches his eyes isn't something that can feasibly be found in the game, but rather something that doesn't belong.

the king of dragnor finds the drops of the last boss killed in this world— a piece of data that grants administrator privileges.

he drops to the ground with the knife still clutched on his hands. he's not going to let go of it.

the mask hides his quivering smile. excitement intermingles with anxiety with the possibility of his life ending. the question of ho-oh's abilities applying to himself was present, and there was never an opportunity to find out until now.

"who do you think the next champion will be?" he asks as he lays. the implication was clear. "would they be easier or more difficult to deal with?"

he was never proactive to begin with, compared to the ones aiming to take his seat.

the orders were already given to the metagross. it doesn't let go of the huntail underneath it as its plates melt down. liquid metal drips on to the aquatic lifeform as it pins it down with its weight.

without its lackey, the mightyena fires off its attack. hidden power strikes the hatterene as payback for the previous lashes it gave the previously dark-type psychic-type.

"i didn't like how you looked at me," he answers. "shouldn't you be aware you have that effect on people? you can't possibly be playing around with the mist without knowing that much!"

despite the self-realization, he switches his grip on his knife and readies his stance for another lunge. the distraction comes just in time to give the avatar of ruination space to breath.

the solgaleo, affected by toxins, reacts erratically at the ultra beast poison. though a creature of ultra space as well, it basically grew up on hoenn as opposed to the other side of the wormhole. resistance wasn't fully built.

it shifts away from the nihilego, and the shock moves it in between the two trainers.

"and why do i need to get dirty if others are willing to do it!" he shouts. "actually, they're all equally just looking for an excuse. aren't i nice for letting them cut in line?"

with his knife, he nicks part of his forearm instead. thunder cackles from the sky, with a bolt landing to the ground, barely missing elisabeth.

time flowed differently in this space, kyle was certain.

he had finished multiple titles, yet kyle still hasn't woken up from his sleep despite the save files indicating play times lasting longer than human waking hours.

the champion stands up and stretches, while his eyes find an outline of a door just by the outskirts of his peripherals. curiosity beckons him to explore the temporal dimension he finds himself in. his steps bring him to the exit.

one careful swing of the door doesn't help the strain his eyes receive from the sunlight that blinded him. it takes him a few moments to adjust, but the sight that he takes in helps him ignore his chagrin.

what welcomes him felt familiar. it didn't feel like the fantastical galar that he was told about, but something more personal that he had lived in.

it then hits him: blades & bulwark.

he looks back at his point of origin, and then notices the guild hall they had when they first played the game. by the time he turns back to what's in front of him, he finds himself holding a bow and feels the weight of the knife on his waist already.

that's one way to start his exploration of this world, he supposed.

the skarmory's appearance disturbs him, but he can't bring himself to ask about it. it's one of the weirdness this space by the mist shows them, and the symbolism it pertains can be asked later, if he even remembers by then.

"help them how?" he asks, then turns his gaze to the ground and smiles wistfully. "what would you do in my situation?"

a measly poochyena, who roars away trainer pokemon, only for them to replace them with another, and a dying skarmory, whose sturdy wings, that were once its key features, now failing.

objectively, the best thing to do was to regroup and fight another day when they have a more advantageous position. kyle ran this scenario in his head multiple times when it happened. he was weak, and were easily lambs to the slaughter.

a sigh, and he holds his head up to answer the voice. "i'm not sure. you tell me," he tells the other person.

he thinks about it before scratching the back of his head.

"tapu fini got me." he finally stands up and stretches. "but it's not that big of deal, right?"

after all, there are more colorful personalities working for the league that doesn't much differ to his current temperament.

the worst part of it is that it seemingly doesn't wear off. perhaps the interdream mist reaching into his thoughts and bringing it back to the surface had something to do with it, but kyle doesn't care much at present to avoid them.

"you go ahead. i'll follow right behind you." he tells him. "think of me like i'm a ten year old kid with attention issues."

the best part is that he's seemingly self-aware of his shortcomings, although it doesn't help that he appears not to look for solutions to fix it.

"galar," he answers without skipping a beat. "i know you gave me your mask, but i can't give this to you."

he had practice with the knife earlier, and as his hand gets used to the gripped, kyle gets more comfortable with using it. it's almost felt natural in a way, akin to muscle memory. as far as he knows, the only other times he used a knife was in the kitchen.

"there's only one way to take this from me, though."

the grim reminder was neither a taunt or a suicidal suggestion, but the objective truth. kyle takes the offensive this time despite his words. with the weapon in front of him, he prepares another swipe at the armored avatar.

frustrations well up on the mightyena's inability to use hard-hitting moves on its own. the howl grows more ominous as it orders the metagross to do what it wants to do.

the pain of the heat melting away its shell was ignored for the orders of the alpha. it powers through, and even had the huntail not clamped itself on the pokemon, the metagross' target would've been the same.

with the last of its strength, it raises one of its metal legs and hammer arm crushes down the pokemon that kept itself wrapped around it.

kyle already sprints forward by the time they're noticed with the lycanroc's attack.

the other grunt manages to get a pokemon out in time, which kyle matches with his own. a mightyena faces off against a tyranitar, but the battle doesn't last as the match is decided within the next moment.

a whistle from kyle sounds as he runs past the pokemon. crystals burst forth from the pokemon as a tera blast is fired from its mouth. the pokemon thinks twice about blocking kyle, and instead, gets hit with the fighting-type move at full force.

kyle leaps at the other rocket with a boot to their face, knocking them down. the shock and the force are enough to keep the grunt fainted.

"are we interrogating them?" he asks kazimir, his boot resting on the grunt's chest.

"isn't it obvious?" he answers navy, "the best part is that there's nothing we can do about it."

he can't stop himself for being amused as he looks far away. troops were starting to lay siege to the city with their fully evolved pokemon. opposing them were the likes of him, who doesn't have anything better than a poochyena.

hoenn was peaceful beforehand. there was no need to be strong.

"what would you do in this situation?" he asks this navy. "would you die for others or try to live another day?"

a quick tap on his belongings confirmed what he feared. his pokemon were gone, replaced with the ones he had that day: six barely-trained poochyenas.

family was apparently not that high in their list of priorities. they both valued their careers, and kyle can't fault them since they already dragged him out of the system.

"it's not ideal, but we make do."

eyes wander around the house. the walls were decorated with pictures of him growing up, from the day he first got here, to his football matches, to his graduation, his induction to the force... affection was there, at the very least.

"do you want to play outside after you're done with that snack?" he asks. walking up to the door, he opens it to reveal the actual turning point of his life.

he doesn't get it at first, but he can read intent from feel alone. he didn't work in the industry without learning a thing or two, especially in a high tension situation.

"i'm trying really hard not to have a reason to kill you. this isn't my fault anymore, you hear me?"

the warm up consists of a hop or two. it doesn't seem like the pain from early slowed him down.

he lunges forward, situating the knife's hilt on his palm for a thrust. if she dies, she dies. he always has an option to get her back to life if MATIAS SILPH requested his friend alive.

the solgaleo, on the other hand, manages to lose its footing as the nihilego attempts to trip it. it falls with gravity, but not before extending its huge paw forwards to crunch the ultra beast beneath its weight.

the room was dark.

in front of him was a brightly lit screen, casting shadows behind him that stretch way far back. multiple game consoles lie in front of it, and scattered around him are cases for various games.

he sits on the floor with crossed legs. a mini-fridge conveniently situated beside him sit on one side, while a box of pizza and bags of chips were on the other.

cheery mellow music don't necessarily come from one source, but from all over him, not unlike a surround sound system. clicky-tappy noises from the controller buttons accompany the tunes, with a seldom chewing of chips or slurping of soda.

his eyes were glued to the screen. there wasn't a choice for the library of games had all the ones he barely had time to finish due to his real life responsibilities.

click, click, click.

only the game was on his mind. it was an empty dream, but one that fulfills him regardless. at the moment, this is what he wants. the coincidence rings true to the rumors regarding the dream mist.

rumors?

regardless, if his dreams were the only place he can continue to enjoy his hobby, then he'll look forward for his next visit.

taking more than thirty seconds to defeat a single pokemon was already taking too long for kyle, and the appearance of a second one simply complicates the equation further.

"i think we need to wrap this up fast."

the dachsbun is recalled, and a baxcalibur takes its place. the excessive heat from its surroundings was enough to activate its thermal exchange. the temperature around the dragon-type gets normalized for a moment, until its trainer's next move takes it up a notch.

"snowscape."

the heat dies down in the battlefield they've been engaged on. while it doesn't completely kill off the smoke and other hazards from being near a volcano brings, it's enough for them to move comfortably for finishing blows.

the suicune by el starts to direct a huge blizzard towards the kommo-o as soon as the conditions for it become ideal, while the raikou ridden by yuina howls to the sky, directing a thunder at the kommo-o.

he hadn't had his fill yet. perhaps he came late for the party, or that there are more overzealous representatives of the league that got to them first before he did.

nevertheless, kyle ran out of things to do.

"do you want to fight instead?" he invites thomas before he dips his head low with a heavy sigh with a dismissive wave of his hand. "ugh, forget it. we're just going to ruin this place if we do."

it was obvious something was off.

the voice on the other side of the line seemed frazzled. it's normal, given that an issue that shouldn't be one is made into one.

"s-sir, i don't think we can share any more information about the cause of your problem."

"huh? why is that?"

"um, i can't tell."

or rather, the agent from the call center wasn't sure how to approach the situation. the frequency was compromised, and they weren't sure if revealing that they are aware was better or not.
