mateo had little expectation of who would all show, but when he got the invite he couldn't exactly say no. it was then that he took notice of kyle's portion. just as he prepared to take another bite of his portion, mateo would swoop. the utterance of a "glomp!" signifying his claim to the succulent treat. "that's just right, move over!" he'd come to take his seat.

"we're sharin'." he'd then proceed to take hold of his own utensil to prepare stealing another portion away.

When Katherine notices Fernando dealing with the goblin in her peripheral vision, she nearly hurls right then and there. If there was a fast way to make her move on from a guy, then it was this. Watching him parenting a child - regardless of the fact that it wasn’t his - was the ultimate turn off.

Yuck.

It causes her to shake her head in order to dismiss the thought away and forget about this image that slowly burned into her memory. Fortunately, she find a new distraction in Hoenn's hottest dragon-tamer, mateo martinez.

Finally, a hot guy without children following after him. Now, he was a real catch.

The hob-goblin noticed how she had suddenly gained the attention of several people at once . Her face turned immediately red upon kim cole-essam and FERNANDO SILPH chastising her for her animalistic behavior. She then also pouted at him by saying she'd eat at the children's table before mumbling under her breath "Not my fault im short.." she said. He then went into guardian mode and began to fill her plate with food, and he even offered her insight into how exactly hotpot worked. Which was actually very useful "Thank you." she said gleefully as the goblin began to eat some of the food presented to her, however when Fernando's back was turned to walk back to his chair Yui quickly grabbed a side plate and placed some of the food Fernando had given her to lars and even gestured for him to give some to Razz Kingsman . The meowstic on his lap was extremely adorable and Yui couldn't help but look at it in awe and wanted to give it some food as well.[break][break]

More and more people were joining, causing her to sink back into her personal bubble a bit, regretting not having one of her Pokémon out to give her a slight bit of comfort. She was really missing Cotton at the moment, she was the best for comfort.

"Fern's all right," Orion says in his fellow councilman's defense, though his smile suggests he knows that kyle lopez is messing around. He looks at Fernando as he playfully adds, "most of the time."

A year ago, Orion wouldn't have been caught dead at a social gathering, let alone one populated by the region's gym leaders and council, but the position had done well to quite literally drag him out of his shell. His stomach still flutters with anxiety as he carefully selects the scraps of the hotpot passed up by others, not wanting to be rude and butt in as they all seemed comfortable doing, but he's at least relaxed enough to enjoy himself.

He's close enough to the Rangers in attendance to hear Razz Kingsman's question. Hoping their previous encounter has become water under the proverbial bridge, he chuckles and weighs in, "Stealing from each other is a 'them' thing, I think." He manages to grab a couple Magikarp filets. Common as they were, he enjoyed the familiar flavour.

Squinting suspiciously at the interloping little shit that had taken the piece he was about to reach for—and instead got another piece in return.

Well, well, what the fresh hell?

Eyebrows raised slightly, he decided to turn to Razz and answer the question.

“They’re more common in Johto, apparently. That’s what I heard,” he replied in response to Razz’s question. Seeing another familiar face at the table, he gave the pinkette a ‘how’d you end up here’ look, raising his eyebrows ever so slightly before squinting suspiciously at the table again.

There was no way he was going to be stolen from again, and to make sure of that he casually pulled off the glove he was wearing where his chopsticks were resting at the moment.

Now, if anyone had noticed this gesture, he hoped they didn’t. It was time to see if metal chopsticks really did conduct temperature faster when it was colder…

Reaching for something closer to where Razz was seated, he then handed one of the smaller pieces to the Meowstic before quickly grabbing several more—never mind if he had to knock away other chopsticks in the process—before dumping the pieces of meat he’d managed to scavenge into his own bowl once more.

The squint was still there, eyeing the other people present at the table quietly. Hm.

In the midst of him stuffing some veggies into his mouth, his head is suddenly forced to turn, eyes glowing as they meet Stormy; the councilman quickly downing the mouthful and setting his bowl onto the table, vaulting from his seat to meet Stormy halfway.

“Stormcloud!”

His arms quickly move to wrap around the woman, lifting her into a bearhug in seconds- never minding the bowl and sticks she held onto, soon after setting her down. Kim walks her to a seat next to himself, shooing anyone near to make room for her.

“I ordered some Mareep if you’re interested in that. Otherwise we can get drunk and enjoy the show.”

A waiter soon approaches, bottle in hand; Lum sake set onto the tabletop per Kim’s request.

Kim quickly pops the cork on the bottle, pouring a cupfull for himself before offering stormy the same.

He leans in close for a moment, whispering to Stormy in a hushed tone. “We’ll catch up with each other after this is all done, k?” He smiles, pulling back and offering up the bottle.

“Anyone want some… What is this… Lum sake? This any good Ferny?”

Kim dangles the bottle precariously, holding it out for Fernando to take a gander at.

She both is and is not expecting the bearhug, and she feels his arms crush the wind right from her lungs while she fights to hold onto her bowl and her utensils. In turn, her returning hug is weak, but her breathless laughter and smile is genuine.[break][break]

When he sets her down, he's quick to usher her into a seat next to him, even going so far as to eject someone else from the spot. Stormy dips her head bashfully in apology, but she is not at all apologetic in hanging out with her best friend. With her butt now firmly in her seat and her mind spinning with all of this new information and commotion, Stormy takes a second to refocus.[break][break]

"Mareep? That sounds amazing!"[break][break]

Someone approaches with a bottle of sake, and Kim reaches for it, but not before whispering in her ear. However, the context behind his suggestion confuses her, and she hesitates before stuffing her face full of whatever she'd managed to gather in her bowl.[break][break]

"After the party is done, or after you've polished that bottle? 'Cause if so, I'd like to help."[break][break]

She reaches for the bottle that he dangles for Fernando to look at.[break][break]

Yui looked at kim when he called her a gremlin, she wanted to laugh but she knew if she did fern would give her a stern look so she tried to act like she was unfazed by the comment but gave a small smile to the man. She also looked over to Selena Desmarais as she spoke about Fernando, she apparently liked him somewhat but found him obnoxious at times. To which Yui REALLY wanted to make a small giggle, at but she suppressed it as hard as she could since he would probably make her eat at the kid's table, or really by herself. [break][break]

Afterwards Yui remained mostly quiet at the table, she knew that when adults were talking it would be rude of her to interrupt. On top of that these people were all related to the league, some people were hurdle's she'd have to jump over during the gym challenges, others were even elite 4 or involved in some big way... She began to get a small pit in her stomach, she wasn't used to these types of situations. She was just an orphan girl with a talent for software and hacking. However there was a woman at the table that the man from earlier (kim cole-essam) regarded as...stormcloud. Was she the stormy silph that she heard so much of? [break][break]

She was very very pretty in person. She seemed so confident as well...maybe hanging around her would help some of it rub off on herself? How could she even get the woman's attention? She knew Fern had a...slight distaste for her, but Yui wondered if she'd feel the same way. Surely by now stormy would notice the young girl staring at her with awe but if she tried to talk to her Yui would instantly freeze up. But wave a small hi to her as she continued to eat her food

“After the this whole, shabang is done and over.” He answers, looking to Stormy as she reached for the bottle in his hand. As he pulled back, he grabbed Yui’s cup and topped her off with the brew he had in hand, nonchalantly setting it before the girl as he conversed with Stormy.

“I wanna see who these other chumps, that ‘nandy over there invited, are. I haven’t been paling around with the newbies like I should as of late.”

Taking a sip from the sake glass, Kim’s face turns to surprise, a slight smack of his lips signalling his affinity for the drink.

“Oooh, that’s nice.” Kim says as he hands the bottle over to Stormy after having hogged it for so long. “It’s sweet but has a bit of tang to it… Pour me a little more, m’love.”

Her fingers fall just short of the bottle when he pulls it away from her, and she reclines backward, brows furrowed and an amused but irritated smile on her face. Instead of pressing the matter, she resumes eating, only to notice a pair of eyes staring at her from across the room. Mid-bite, Stormy hesitates to stare at the child in return. When she waves, Stormy waves back.[break][break]

In doing so, she doesn't notice Kim filling the girl's cup with his sake.[break][break]

"You certainly haven't been paling around as much - I hardly see you. Though maybe that's on me for being so damn busy."[break][break]

Stormy watches as he takes his first sip, giggling at his reaction. She takes it eagerly to take a sip for herself, though her face contorts slightly in surprise and she takes great care to savor the taste on her lip.[break][break]

"It's quite yummy - that's dangerous."[break][break]

But he asks her to pour out some more and she does so happily, topping up his cup.[break][break]

cait had arrived to the gathering a short ways into the meal, garbed casually and making for a familiar sight as she entered the establishment. the faces here were quite familiar, each individual she could pick out with relative ease - their respective titles coming to mind. she'd nod politely to some, but her her eyes immediately caught on the sight of kim, stormy and fernando.

she initially maintained her distance, getting a feel for the crowd as she simultaneously determined where she could settle. she'd spot a vacancy in a spot that was relatively close to the councilmen and elite four member, the woman taking her seat and addressing the trio with a voice which radiated warmth.

"evening. sorry about being late, sir," she said, the tail end of her apology directed at the eldest silph.

cait eyed the admittedly unfamiliar layout, having a vague idea of what to do. she'd only indulged in a hotpot once or twice beforehand, but she was thankful she was competent enough when it came to the art of wielding chopsticks. she claimed the vegetables and tofu above all else, her ceramic bowl soon filled with a collection of the freshly stewed edibles.

"hm."

the first experimental bites proved savory and filling, the woman quietly enjoying her meal. she focused more so on listening into conversations being held than starting one, curious to see how those who were closest to fernando interacted.

[attr="class","spiral"]By the time Fernando returns to his seat, he can spot the additional plate of food nudged onto Laurence Anderson’ side. That defeats the whole point of him teasing the Head Ranger and he makes a mental note to rebuke Yui Fujin Silph. Why was she only tolerable to those he hates? Can she feel the negativity he keeps under warps? No, impossible. Maybe?

“You know, I don’t have to pay for this,” Fernando quips back at those present. He’s only joking, naturally, but he does give them a side-eye as well.

The man of the hour only gets to squeeze in a few more bites as more people join in. He shrugs at kim cole-essam’s question, avoiding eye contact with Stormy Silph in lieu of their recent awkwardness, before cait alfric arrives shortly after.

“Don’t be,” he insists with the most genuine smile he’s had since they’ve started. Alfric is one of his most loyal companions and her service to him is a stark reminder of what everyone else should be. “You didn’t invite…” How does he put it? “Your man?”

Cait never gets a chance to answer that question when his phone goes off. It only takes one glance at the caller ID before Fernando excuses himself, waving to kim cole-essam that he has to take the call.

“Yeah, yeah. Merry Christmas,” he answers sarcastically. “Love you too…” His less than enthusiastic tone carries over as the last thing he slips toward the party before Fernando leaves to go outside to talk.

Unfortunately, he never comes back. Nor does he leave his card. And, as with any good Kantonese restaurant, they don’t take IOUs. Cash or nothing.

For all the jokes and teasing, tonight is the one night he gets to bite them back where it hurts.

Their much, much smaller wallets.

[attr="class","light"]while mateo helped himself to some beef. he couldn't help but feel a bit strange. it was as if he were being watched the moment he felt a shiver go down his spine. he only gained this feeling with one person. so, shifty-eyed, he'd look around. thinking to himself there's no fuckin' way she's here.

for now, with a wryly chuckle, he'd try to act as if he were imagining things. unaware that the person eyeing him, like the malicious mismagius she'd knew herself to be, was Katherine Fairburne.
