The conflict at Meteor Falls had mostly only served to ravage the wilderness surrounding Route 115. His own vineyard and draciary had been no exception to the fact. But, surprisingly, the destructive clash had also served to unearth a great deal.[break][break]

Remiel had already signed himself up for one of these 'adventours' in the battle-scarred mountains, assembling a crew that consisted of Galar's child veteran, his best friend, and a sea-faring blonde that had come recommended by said best friend. Their excavation was due to begin the next day. And it wouldn't be until then that he would come to discover the true origin of the newfound hot springs on the route: the same he had invited Stormy to come visit with him today.[break][break]

The springs were tucked away in a pocket of mountains adjacent to Meteor Falls, surrounded by a thick forest of pine trees and steep cliffsides. The black-haired royal was pleased to find that they were but a mere fifteen minute drive from his vineyard estate- five, if one flew. It made everything rather convenient. Seeing as how the hot spring had only just been discovered, and was still in the infancy of becoming a proper onsen, however, the operation was currently minimal.[break][break]

A small family from Lavaridge, formerly from Circhester, had been given the opportunity to move here and start their own business. The Galarian Embassy had funded the effort, and had even flown in a temporary, portable house to shelter them while their real home was being built. The hot spring itself consisted of three shack-like buildings (two changing rooms with lockers and a reception room at the center) and a perimeter composed of hastily built, twenty-foot log walls.[break][break]

In its current state, the hot spring was as natural and untamed as any average person could hope. Without the walls and the shacks, it went right back to being a frontier phenomenon. For that reason, it hadn't been opened to the public yet... but the family made an exception for the Galarian ambassador that had granted them their free chance to make a living.[break][break]

"They've separated the hot spring into two," Remiel informs Stormy in the nearly empty reception room, carrying nothing more than a small duffel bag with toiletries and an extra pair of clothes. "So that we may enjoy it as intended. They only ask that we refrain from summoning our pokemon." Earl Grey, who had come with him the whole way here, now sat on a small cabinet against the wall, beside a basket containing Remiel's six luxury balls.[break][break]

Even Stormy's thoughts are awash with speculation and anxiety. Their trip to the impromptu, barely finished hotspring is met with silence, for the most part, presumably from both parties. Stormy's knuckles press against her cheek as she looks the other way, head quite literally lost in the clouds.[break][break]

Like Remiel, she had a group of capable adventurers tackling the Meteor Falls in the morning. She had no idea what to expect or what they would find, only that thinking about it gave her the shivers. It was a fortunate turn of events that Remiel's pitstop, or maybe planned excursion, she hadn't been listening, is to kick back and relax in a hot spring.[break][break]

Stormy blinks awake from her trance, squinting at the man as his voice comes through her tumultuous thoughts. But she finds herself smiling at him anyway, slowly nodding.[break][break]

"Right-- okay. You'll keep me company."[break][break]

Her face falls, slightly, when he turns away from her to head into his own private bath. She does, however, eventually go her own way and make her way into the spring opposite his. Though she doesn't enter yet, instead preferring to tuck the towel around her form and dip her toes in the water.[break][break]

Though rather barebones and simple, taking the ambassador back to a time of no electricity or sophisticated technology, the men's locker room serves its purpose anyway. He sets his duffel bag down, takes off his clothes, and neatly folds them before placing them at the edge of a wooden bench inside. When he's done, he, too, wraps a towel around his waist prior to exiting towards the hot spring.[break][break]

They technically share the same steaming pool of water, but Remiel's portion of it is about 300 square feet: sufficient enough for at least three or five people, and certainly for just one. The thick and tall wooden logs that had been placed together to form fencing around each portion serve their purpose well, though not as well as the expertly crafted bamboo fences at traditional Johtonian onsens. The few small gaps do not provide enough visibility to even discern a human shape. Yet there's a brief glimpse of color when Stormy passes by on the other side.[break][break]

As Remiel makes his way to the pool, he notes the surrounding forest, peacefully abuzz with the sound of birds and leaves in the breeze. "I don't imagine you have much time these days to unwind, do you?" He inquiries, having noticed her disconnection with the world earlier. He carefully dips one foot into the water as he waits to grow accustomed to its heat. "I haven't had a free weekend like this since... summer."[break][break]

Though he wasn't looking for any sympathy, simply just stating the fact.[break]

Stormy traces her fingers against the wooden logs, lingering on the edge of the spring and not actually entering it. Ever since attaining avatarship and bonding with Moltres, the thought of getting wet was something undesirable. Of course, hot springs were.. hot, and generally enjoyable - and she felt obligated to participate because she had been invited, but it takes a lot of pacing before she sinks into the water, leaving her towel off to the side to dry off later.[break][break]

The heat of the water doesn't bother her, and she finds herself wading into it with ease. Despite its scalding heat, her skin practically glows as a result of it. [break][break]

Her attention shifts to Remiel's voice on the other side, and she makes her way to the wooden logs to get closer to him. The woman presses her back against the barrier, leaning her head back against the wood. It smells earthy and natural and relaxing, and she can't help but close her eyes and let her shoulders relax.[break][break]

"No, not really. There's always something that needs done, and something I need to do."[break][break]

It wasn't a bad thing, necessarily, but she was certainly exhausted.[break][break]

The spring water bites back, seemingly as soon as Stormy enters her own part of the pool, but Remiel can't be sure. Thankfully, the change in temperature isn't enough to warrant him backing away. Instead, he silently bears it, stubborn against the stinging pain as it tints his fair skin a very light shade of red. He might have benefitted from soaking his body with hot water prior, but the family that now operated this locale had yet to install showers with proper plumbing.[break][break]

Regardless, the young royal manages to wade into the pool waist-deep, but stops there to adjust to the temperature a bit more before going any further. "I quite understand," Remiel says in reply, noting the closeness of her voice before gazing at the stars up above, past the pine leaves and slate grey rock of the adjacent mountains. "Sometimes I wish things were different."[break][break]

He sighs, and closes his eyes as he tries to forget the worries plaguing his mind like a storm. The delicate balance between his duties as ambassador and his duties as admin. His mother's increasing attempts to pull him back to Galar in whatever way she can. In addition to the continued plight of Alistair Marleigh and his Knights Bethel. And, of course, the disappearance of Isra Nightingale to top it all off...[break][break]

Sometimes he found himself regretting having come to Hoenn in the first place. Things would have been much easier if he'd followed his mother's perfect little plan for anointment. Though, arguably, he might have been just as miserable. And he wouldn't have met her...[break][break]

She sinks lower into the water, allowing it to lap at her collarbones. When it recedes, she breathes out, her breath cooling her skin before she's swallowed again by it's warmth. It's therapeutic, to sit back and relax and think of nothing else but the quietness of her breathing.[break][break]

Stormy's eyes open, however, and her head tilts back to gaze up at the stars. Remiel breaks the calm silence between them, and she finds herself focusing on it, and the way his voice dips and whispers. There is pain in his voice, or maybe listless confusion and stress. She considers his words carefully before responding.[break][break]

"And what would you do differently?"[break][break]

Remiel finds more relaxation in the surrounding ambiance. The hot springs do their part, of course. The mineral-rich water, though a sharp sting to his skin at first, slowly begins to feel less like an immediate threat to him and more like a physical relaxant of its own.[break][break]

But what he can actually see strikes him far more profoundly. The water rippling with every miniscule movement of his hands and arms. The pine leaves blowing in the wind and spreading their aroma. The moonlight blanketing everything with its gentle presence, where candlelight will not reach. Though he rarely found peace inwardly these days, he could easily get lost in the peace surrounding him instead.[break][break]

And, though he doesn't know to truly appreciate it now, it was good to spend time with another person. A friend.[break][break]

Her words reach him past the wooden logs. He stops to think, taking another floaty step into the deep end, and closer to the barrier that stands between them both. "That's part of the problem... I believe. I wouldn't have done much differently... I just hoped for better results." He turns his back to a boulder before leaning against it, slowly sinking downward with a rich exhale of breath. He could slip away so easily. Submerge.[break][break]

Instead, he half-opens one of his eyes, which he hasn't truly realized he's closed until now. "I'm probably striking you as horribly prideful, aren't I?"[break]

Were there crickets? The more she relaxed into a puddle of mush, the more the ambience, the serenity, the calmness of their surroundings came into absolute focus. She could hear the lapping of water with her every movement, lipping at the edge of the pool. She could hear the rustle of the trees above her, hear the pine needles rubbing against each other. They'd come loose, some of them, and land in the water. They spun around in lazy circles on the surface, and some brushed her skin.[break][break]

Absently, the woman pinches them between her thumb and forefinger after having chased them around the water. They seem to give off a pleasant, earthy aroma, one that she is endlessly thankful for.[break][break]

And on the other side of the barrier, through several inches of wood stacked on wood, she could hear the movement of another body. She was acutely aware of every movement he made, even despite the physical barrier. The further he moved into the pool, the closer she could feel the water pushing through the barrier to lap at her back.[break][break]

It was comforting, she realized, to know that there was another person on the other side. To hear his voice brought her a sense of peace, one that she found herself waiting for the longer silence stretched between them.[break][break]

When he does speak, his voice sounds closer, and she instinctively turns her head to rest her chin on her shoulder.[break][break]

"Hmm.."[break][break]

His words strike a chord in her, more than she cares to admit. It leaves her feeling heavier, and she sinks lower in the water until it brushes her chin. She could relate, and that was what hurt the most.[break][break]

"No-- no.. I get it. I hoped for better results too. If that makes you prideful, then that makes me prideful too."[break][break]

Stormy's understanding strikes a bizarre chord with him. Primarily because he believes it. Even despite the trauma of their last assignment together, she had never struck him as shy or terribly insecure. There was an uncanny strength to her that hid just beneath the surface of her bright exterior. He'd seen it when they're first met at that night vendor's outdoor restaurant in Petalburg. He saw it again on that pirate ship.[break][break]

He wondered if she, herself, was aware of its brilliant (and, yes, even beautiful) complexity.[break][break]

Closing his eyes again, and feeling the steam bead on the surface of his exposed skin like sweat, Remiel sinks just a few inches further into the depths of the spring. Two prideful individuals... too prideful to admit they might have been better off making different choices. If one should aspire to live their life with no regrets, then what became of those whose life was worsened for the lack of them?[break][break]

There was no growth without decimation of some sort. No gain without loss. But, in between all of it, there was a limbo of unspoken truths and deep-seated infallibility. A limbo Stormy Silph and Remiel Calcifet now seemed to share.[break][break]

He breathes in, exhaling in a gentle sigh as a pine leaf gently floats down to land atop his head. Leaning his head back against the warm boulder, however, it slides off to join him in the steaming pool. "An Elite Four member and the Galarian Ambassador convening in such a private... place. If the press caught wind of this, we'd never hear the end of it." He flatly joked.[break][break]

A branch snaps nearby, somewhere in the forested mountainside overlooking the spring. A chittering, and the thump of a Bibarel's tail against soil, rings out into the air, followed by a Murkrow's caw. The sounds bring no alarm to Remiel, however. The area was much too remote and steep for the prying eyes of press to find or even navigate.[break][break]

"Even so," He adds, stretching an arm into the air, and uttering a satisfied groan when he felt his joints pop. He peeks a single cobalt eye open afterwards, his muscles relaxing. "... Thank you for joining me."[break]

At the same time Remiel sinks deeper into the water, Stormy does too. Her breathing slows as she focuses on the clarity of this trip, of truly letting herself melt away. The heat is soothing in its complexity, and she quickly forgets that she's even bathing in water. The gentle lapping of it against her bare skin becomes invisible and unnoticed, like a second skin.[break][break]

It is here, in the quiet and in the private of only one persons company that she truly feels like she could be herself. Gone is the loud, boistrous, confident woman. In her place is a solemn silence, a show of humility and honesty. She is bold, bright, confident because she feels she has to be. That if she doesn't provide the world her strongest self, she'll be overlooked. [break][break]

She exhales quietly when Remiel speaks again, but her eyes remain closed. There is a lazy, amused smile on her face - though she knows he can't see it.[break][break]

"There are worse things to gossip about, surely."[break][break]

Though she chuckles, and the faint blush she feels bubble up from her chest is masked by the heat from the hot spring. She muses to herself just as he thanks her for joining him. It brings another warm smile to her face and she tilts her head back to gaze up at the stars.[break][break]

"Thank you for inviting me."[break][break]

There is a dull, rhythmic tapping of wood nearby. It is faint; hardly alarming. In fact, even the typically vigilant ambassador subconsciously ignores it. Though perhaps that has something to do with his present company.[break][break]

Meanwhile, finally, the heat bubbling from the pool becomes less of an invading sting and more of a warm hug on his body. He lightly moans as he settles into his seat beside the boulder. He can feel the stress being siphoned out from him, slow and subtle, like a poison. Though it isn't enough to completely rid himself of it, it's enough to relish in the feeling.[break][break]

Eventually, he lazily lolls his head in Stormy's supposed direction. His vision blurred slightly by the steam rising from below, he stares at the wooden post shielding them each from the other's view. The silence that lingers between them for a moment is comfortable; gratifying, even. But he breaks it before long. There's something he's compelled to say.[break][break]

"I don't take your friendship lightly, you know... if that's what this is. I feel like you should know that, Stormy. Particularly after the last assignment we took." The pirates. Her being taken hostage. The threat of torture. Unbeknownst to her, all of the men on that ship (that hadn't perished with its sinking) had been assassinated. Some of them more brutally than others.[break]

Is she falling asleep? She might be falling asleep. The heat seems to stabilize, maybe even drop off entirely from being altogether too hot. It seems that the atmosphere is really working to pull out her knots and let her truly relax. Her earlier stresses seem to melt away the deeper she sinks, and the rhythmic noise of something tapping at wood encourages her to close her eyes and let it all melt into background noise.[break][break]

Though she isn't aware of his attention shifting to her through the wooden barrier, his voice comes across more pointed and specific, seeking her. Stormy shifts to glance over her shoulder slightly, chin resting against the ball of her shoulder. She can feel a peculiar sort of warmth rise in her cheeks that is not the result of hot water. His words strike a chord in her that she doesn't realize even exists, and she lets those thoughts settle for a moment.[break][break]

"You are a very close friend of mine, Remiel. It's an honor you think so highly of me, really."[break][break]

She hums, the smile present in the tone of her voice. As she leans back, however, the barrier seems to shift against her weight. It's definitely, maybe, just coincidence, but it causes her to push away from it anyway, eyes wide with surprise. Did she hear something creaking and groaning?[break][break]

There's a pang of warmth from hearing those words from her for the first time. Feeling unsure, timid, or insecure wasn't something Remiel had too much experience dealing with. In fact, he actively and utterly despised those feelings. Lately, however, it felt as though some sort of levee was beginning to break... and it left him more baffled than anything. He was better than this. Sentimentality was a weakness.[break][break]

Suddenly, there's a sharp creak... followed by a low groan of wood to his right. Snapping out of his thoughts and turning his attention to the source, the black-haired royal is surprised to see the tall wooden barrier tipping in his direction. With little time to spare, and without a single word, he pushes himself off the boulder he's been leaning on and dives below the surface of the pool's water.[break][break]

Seconds afterward, the wooden barrier collapses onto the spring with a loud clank. The rocky edges of the pool keep the oak wall from becoming submerged. But, for a good moment afterwards, Remiel is nowhere to be seen or heard... until, finally, he reemerges on Stormy's side of the pool with gasp and a slightly reddened skin. He hisses as he stands, dripping and with the water line up to his waist, while he wipes at his face with his hands. "Gah!"[break][break]

Too invested in willing the stinging pain to fade away, Remiel has yet to fully grasp where he has reemerged and with who. Needless to say, he doesn't take notice of the Bibarel nearby either, who blinks at the sight of the two humans for a moment before scurrying back into the forest. It'd come back later for those neatly arranged half-trees it had brought down![break]

For a long moment, she worries that she's said the wrong thing. Surely it wasn't possible, but the extended period of silence between them made her second-guess. [break][break]

The moment she glances over her shoulder to furrow her brows and overthink it, however, is the exact moment the barrier between them shifts and gives way. As it turns out, there had been a Bibarel gnawing away at the foundation of the wall. It splits and creaks, and Stormy stands straight up as it falls away from her.[break][break]

And then there is panic when she sees no one on the other side of the pool, where there should have been a man.[break][break]

"Remiel? Remiel!"[break][break]

Her panic is crystal clear in the pitch of her voice and she wades further toward him, until her feet no longer touch the bottom and she has to swim. She hates swimming.[break][break]

But there is movement to her side that doesn't belong to the Bibarel who sprint off into the rest of the trees. Her eyes wash over the man's pink skin, the way his hands wipe the water from his eyes. He's sopping wet from having dove under the water, and in her surprise she had almost certainly been responsible for the temperature rising.[break][break]

"Oh my God, Remy, are you okay? The barrier didn't land on you, did it?"[break][break]

She is breathless and overwhelmed, and not at all concerned about his closeness, only his safety. Stormy reaches out with one hand to touch him, though she comes to her senses halfway through and hesitates, not quite committing.[break][break]
