Heh, don't get the wrong idea..." Yveltal shifted its lumbering figure at the backhanded remark, but otherwise maintained composure. Their alliance was forged out of necessity, not admiration or loyalty. More oft than not, he found the loathsome creature a wretched thing, one that had never done for him anything it wouldn't have done for itself, for its own reasons. But perhaps it would have behooved Serena to present herself more graciously towards an alleged god of death.[break][break] "...This one sees fit to mock me, even as he tests my hospitality..." Yveltal does not take well to Adrian's comments, yet treats him as more than just another vessel carrying out man's duplicity. For so long as it had deigned to share with Adrian its terrible duties, it has made note of his unwillingness, a lack of enjoyment. It is accustomed to his incessant quips and misgivings. However, Serena it does not know save through him, and as such it elects to remain inert, that it too might understand his reasoning. And whether to act upon them, misguided as they may yet prove to be...[break][break] "I'm... not sure how to explain it all. Not in so few words." The reasons were many, no one mattering more than the rest. Adrian draws a shaky breath before turning his attention back towards Yveltal. It still unnerved him, staring up at it. He wondered if any amount of time or familiarity would ease the malaise its mere visage brought.[break][break]
MEMENTO MORI[break][break] "I felt like... you deserved to know, I guess?" His status as an avatar was, to him, a well guarded secret. This might have been one of those 'too little, too late' moments between them, but Adrian had been hoping to explain how much of what he'd done had been impacted by the cumbersome burdens placed upon him.[break][break] "When Howie died, I... I started looking for ways to bring her back."[break][break] He would have her relate to his sheer desperation to undo fate.[break][break] "...So that was your intention, as you muddled through the path I set you on..."[break][break] This isn't about you. Let me finish, I owe her this much.[break][break] "I read about a burned tower in Johto, and of the pokemon that had resurrected its three casualties. I had willed myself to believe that, that if one could achieve this miracle, then—" He realized how crazy it must've sounded.[break][break] "...Then any of them could. And that is when I encountered... Yveltal." Adrian's face conveys exhaustion as if suddenly drained of his youthful vigor, aged beyond his years by the melancholy and upset that yet holds his heart. Howie never came back. But the things he'd done just to make it so, they still kept him up at night. Where some saw power and monsters to be wielded, Adrian only felt an emptiness. These greater beings never gave more than they received, the odds always in their favor, their conditions skewed towards self interest; if there was anything he wished to impart upon Serena, it was that becoming an avatar was inherently an act of martyrdom. No good could ever come of it that would justify their labors, save to the eyes of those whose lives spanned eons, and whose prejudices valued men and their lives so little.[break][break] It was they who were wielded, and not the other way around, make no mistake.[break][break] "It was the single greatest mistake I've ever made." He draws a shaky breath as his eyes close in a pensive reprieve from his monologue. Almost finished.[break][break] "When I found out you were in Rocket, I was so angry at you. You'd fallen into the same kind of trap, subjected yourself to the same kind of treatment. And for what?" Taking a moment to slick his hair back, he iterates further:[break][break] "I knew only that you had made the choice, not why. And I knew I had only done it out of necessity, as required by the greater purpose I've served. I'm still not sure I should trust you with this, but... I want to think better of you."[break][break] "If I serve anything, it is the idea of a greater good. This is exactly that."[break][break] Because he had experienced the immeasurable guilt of the first sin of man; it had been his only comfort that it was all leading towards a greater good, and even then it had been unconscionable. It weighed on him even now, and he knew he could not ever commit to such an act against nature without the vindication of a righteous cause inspiring him. "So please... don't ever make me choose between loyalties, Sere."[break][break] "I love you. But I have no love for Rocket or its principles, only a need for their protection now that the League could never have me..." He was a murderer.[break][break] As much as he'd been hoping to prove to Serena he wasn't entirely lost to her, the fact remained that she was now a Rocket Beast, an enforcer. If a time ever came where he had to choose between what was right, and what Rocket demanded...[break][break] He would choose himself and Yveltal every time, though with a leaden heart.[break][break] ...So it was protection this one sought by siding with thieves and cutthroats... But what use have you for their mortal devices, when you were made to stand higher... What means have mortals contrived that could worry one with the gift...? How vexing...[break][break] —But I know now he is begun to see the virtue of the path. tags Serena Malcolm[break] [attr=class,bottom-text] THE BURDENS WE BEAR SUMMIT OF MT.
