Loving without being loved in return is not something she is unfamiliar with. But the sting of it remains, burrowing deeper and deeper beneath her skin. It makes her sick, makes her erratic, turning her into a version of herself she cannot recognize.
So when he laughs, she stiffens, because his voice is sarcastic and mean.
