”Ugh, don’t even talk to me about paperwork,” he groaned. ”I’m the owner, and that means filling out all kinds of forms for things I didn’t even know I needed.”

Throughout the conversation, Locke kept a careful eye on the wildlife. Nothing they’d seen so far seemed to match what they were looking for however. ”Maybe there aren’t any here…?” they muttered under their breath.

A small Riolu seemed to peak out of the trees to watch them. Paxton’s eyes are immediately locked and before he can coax the pokemon closer Joules shoots out like a bullet slamming the little pokemon to the sight before floating upward and coming down to crush it against the earth hard before the little pokemon can react. Paxton let out an uneasy laugh, but you couldn’t beat that efficiency. He threw a pokeball at the small creature while Joules returned to his flank, beeping happily at a job well done. [break][break]

“Oh? I had no idea you were the owner. Congratulations on a successful holiday season I suppose?” the blonde offered turning to look back at his companion. He noted that Locke seemed a bit distracted, having passed multiple pokemon now without much interest. “Y’lookin’ for something specific? Maybe I can help.” Paxton for the most part had just been ambling around, happy to have company that wasn’t too rowdy.

Locke watched Joules’ sudden attack in nervous silence. ”…Jealous type, huh?” Hopefully it didn’t extend to people.

”Ah, a friend of mine mentioned some kinda report about Unown the other day. Was kinda hoping to find some…” he explained, bringing Ji-Ji to a momentary stop to let another set of Pokémon pass through. ”To be honest, I’ve got all the Pokémon I could ever want, so it’s just letters I’m looking for. Still, it’s nice just taking it easy like this. Definitely an improvement compared to how things’ve been lately,” he added nonchalantly, rubbing under his Drampa’s chin as the party continued onward.

Paxton looked over at Locke before smiling as he laughed softly. “Joules? Mm..I don’t think so.” He said trying to ease the possible discomfort Locke may have had. Joules could be intimidating after all. “They’ve just been with me for a long time and we can communicate sometimes without talking.” He said with a small shrug. Joules could carry out their missions quickly and efficiently. And the mission for today was check for steel types and train. [break][break]

“A report about Unown? Can’t say I’ve heard of that.” Paxton replied with a small shrug, slowing down as some pokemon went by. Joules took the liberty of hovering above them as the pokemon moved before coming down to float by his trainer’s side. “My boss says it’s good to take time off.” He said with a small nod. “I can’t imagine it must be for a business owner during the holidays, but I’m glad you’re more relaxed today.” He said. “If it makes you feel better to vent, I don’t mind. I’m used to that sort of thing.”

He shook his head. ”Worst of it won’t come ‘til December really. All the last-second deliveries are what really-Oh!”

Locke was quickly distracted by a familiar-looking squid Pokémon floating past. They smiled, knowing exactly who would appreciate one of these.

”Ji-Ji.” The elderly dragon raised a sleepy head to follow his trainer’s gaze. ”We’re catching that one.”

Their Drampa looked the Inkay up and down up towering over the little squid as he ambled up to it. The smaller Pokémon stared up at the dragon with wide, terrified eyes, before Ji-Ji lowered his head to the ground, lifted the cephalopod up with his snout, and let it slide all the way down his back and tail.

He turned around and did this a few more times, until the Inkay seemed to understand the game, climbing and sliding up and down the dragon with glee.

”…That works too, I guess.”

“Rush season.” Paxton said with a bit of sympathy. He didn’t wish for that kind of responsibility. He could barely take care of himself and his pokemon, much less a whole enterprise. While Locke moved to try to capture something, Paxton found himself distracted by a soft mewling. A Skitty peered up at them from the bushes, the tail flicking playfully despite Joules’ many eyes coming upon them. They beeped at the cat, and the cat meowed back before sprinting away. Joules followed, disappearing as well. “Don’t stray too far!” he called out. [break][break]

“So why did you start your own business anyway?” he asked turning back to Locke. “You just really loved Delibirds?” He asked as the bushes rustled again, and out came Joules with a pink kitten sitting on top of their head. He beeped once at Paxton, and the Skitty stood up to yowl at him. Paxton blinked before pulling out a pokeball. The pair began to shake excitedly before he booped the cat's forehead with it. They disappeared into the pokeball, and Joules beeped loudly. [break][break]

He paused for a bit, trying to piece together an explanation that would sound at least somewhat reasonable to a normal person. ”I guess…I just think someone oughta? Even if it’s not always safe.”

At that, their Drampa flopped back over to jam his big dopey head in his trainer’s face. Everywhere was safe with Ji-Ji.

Even so, not even the old dragon could stop a little bit of melancholy from dripping into Locke’s next words. ”It’s not right, ya know? Being on your own like that…”

They shook it off not a moment later, covering Ji-Ji’s ears and turning back to Paxton with a mischievous look. ”Truth is-and don’t tell anyone-my favorite Pokémon is actually Dragonite.”

Paxton nodded as Locke spoke. “Ah…so you’re the pony express then.” He said looking over at him. “OR at least, you decided it’d be you.” He could admire that kind of ambition. He didn’t really have a sense of ambition or a goal he was working towards. He had dreams but…it wasn’t anything concrete he truly felt he could work toward. “Naw, it ain’t. Could drive any man crazy. You do good work, Locke.” Not that he’d used the service but form what he could tell, their intentions were good and that’s all he really needed to judge the quality of their work. [break][break]

He stood quietly as Joules moved to hover near Paxton, reporting nothing out of the ordinary. “Dragonite?! Well, I’ll be damned.” He said with a laugh. Joules beeped, more so a warning for their trainer than chiming into the conversation. “I’d ask why Delibird then, but I guess you can sav e that story for next time.” He said as he waved over the courier. “I think I’ll be heading on out first. But it was nice chatting.” He said trying to, very awkwardly, smile at his newest friend before Joules beeped happily, spinning their magnets as they added to a similar positive sentiment towards Locke and Ji-Ji. “Be seein’ ya.”

Locke let out a short bark of laughter. ”I guess I am!” His embarrassment soon returned at Paxton’s further compliments, turning his head away slightly to hide the blush rising to his cheeks.

They didn’t think reasons for his branding decisions weren’t all that interesting, but they still smiled at the promise of future meetings with the other man. He seemed nice.

”Yeah, it’s getting pretty cold now.” If Ji-Ji’s attempts to huddle close to his trainer were any indication. ”We’ll probably wrap up too.” Didn’t seem like they were going to find what they were looking for here anyway.
