Reaching for a pokeball from the holsters at his waist, Derek released his pokemon of a choice—A Machamp!

"Looks like we finally get to test this out. You ready?" A firm nod from Randal convinced Derek to unsheathe the mega stone ring on his hand hand, balling into a fist as the one on Randal's belt resonated with it.

While preparing to fling the first one away with it's strength, Derek turned to find that his partner was also chipping away at their numbers.

Del Mar means ‘of the sea’, and true to the surname Mars gave to himself, much of his time is spent near the endless blue waters that surround Hoenn.

Today, he had gone sailing, but the sight of beached Wailords is one that can be seen from afar, and while he usually would care little for getting involved in ranger affairs (except for when he’s interrogating them for information as a Rocket admin, that is), Wailord happen to be a pokémon he really likes. Not as much as skyler dross does, obviously, but you know… In this house we appreciate Water types.

”Hey, man, need a hand? Might wanna get all those Wailord back in the water soon.” When the sailboat is docked and he approaches the Ranger, Mars raises a hand just enough to point to the keystone currently being worn as a bracelet – all while flashing a confident smile of perfect pearly whites.

Knowing this would provoke the pokemon, Derek couldn't help but smirk as the Machamp furiously used bulk up. Bolstering the size and strength of it's muscles, the next application of strength proved quite astounding.

Not just one, but two of the beached pokemon were sent flying out over the water, where they'd be free to go on their merry way. "My name's Derek, by the way. Where you sailing back from, if you don't mind me asking?"

”Ha! Sounds like you know how to motivate your Machamp.”

Whatever works, right?

Reaching into his pocket, it’s with calm that Mars retrieves a Luxury Ball that seems to almost shine under the late Autumn sun, an Urshifu soon being called out onto the sun. The Wushu Pokémon stands tall and proud, looking at the Machamp as if he were sizing him up.

”Oreius, help with moving the Wailord back to the water.” Upon hearing this instruction, the Urshifu looks at the struggling beached whales and nods solemnly, already walking towards them when the bright light of a MEGA EVOLUTION overtakes their surroundings.

Now clad in white and blue, the Rapid Strike Style Urshifu begins sending Wailords back into the water without a problem. Meanwhile, Mars simply watches while chatting with the ranger.

”Nice to meet you, Derek. I’m heading back to Slateport’s marina, actually. I was just taking the boat out for the afternoon, the seas aren’t usually this calm this time of the year.”

Which could have to do with why the Wailords ended up on the beach.

He turns to look at Derek then, offering a hand for him to shake while smirking faintly.

”Martín, but feel free to call me Mars. Most people find that easier to pronounce.”

Another bulk up set the stage for Randal, who now towered over his normal stature, to pick up. Four. Fucking. Wailords. They were chucked across the ocean sloppily, but were out of sight in no time.

"But as you can obviously see, he has reason to be. Having finished with this stretch of beach, the Machamp stood next to Derek as the passed by Mars and his Urshifu.

"Slateport, was it? Seems like everyone's got business there. Everyone but me, anyway. Rangers are so short-staffed these days, I seem to be working my way across the entire region. Except where there's civilization."

Very impressive work.” Mars will never be one to deny the usefulness of a pokémon, but of course, his Urshifu would never want to be outdone either, and it’s soon enough that Wailords are being tossed into the water in pairs. Wailord pair after Wailord pair, all done with an ease that makes it seem as if they were huge balloons filled with nothing but air.

”With how far they send you all, you should be getting paid more.” He jokes with a short chuckle, paying no mind to the fact that part of the reason rangers are short-staffed is the dangers that come with the job… Like those that disappear under totally mysterious circumstances. Not like he'd know anything about that, of course.

”Still, must be nice to see all those distant places. Working in the city can get repetitive as hell, I wish I had more time to go sailing.”

That would be nice, but alas, Mars sure is a busy man.

"It's funny you mention pay, though. Everyone seems to joke about budget cuts and all that. I'm only a cadet, so I don't really care. Once I become a captain, then I may want to negotiate a higher wage." The prospect of running patrols of an entire city worth of people and pokemon was quite demanding. Taxing, even, on the individual bestowed such authority—Responsibility.

Clearing up another set of Wailord, Derek gazed around to see that only a few were left. Once they were all gone, it'd be time for him to head back to headquarters. A head count was taking place before the holiday season. They needed to determine who would be working, and who would be free to, well...enjoy the holidays, of course!

Despite having lived in Hoenn for two years now, Mars is sure he hasn’t seen every single place in the region. He just doesn’t have time for that, even if his job does occasionally take him to every city and town. Should he be thankful for that? Perhaps, but there’s nothing too exciting about visiting distant bank branches.

”You should. Being responsible for other people and their actions is hard work, and you should be paid accordingly for it.” Mars would know, being a CEO and all.

As they talk, it’s with huge splashes of water that Wailord make it back into the sea, the beach soon being back to its nice and whale-free state.

”Good job, Oreius.” Praise is given when it’s deserved, although Mars’ attention soon returns to the ranger. ”Looks like you’re done here... Might wanna tell your Machamp to devolve...”

It's muscles cramp from the strain, Randal no stranger to such a thing. But this is different, and he seems to take a knee due to the stress it put on his body.

"We'll get you checked out. Here, get in the ball awhile." Returning his pokemon to it's device, Derek looks over towards Mars with a half-hearted smile. He felt foolish for not paying attention. Irresponsible, even. It wasn't a good look for a ranger, let alone someone who used to be a gym leader here in Hoenn.

"It does seem like we're done here, huh? Thanks for the help. I'd stick around, but...I need to get Randal to the pokemon center. Hope you understand!" Calling over his shoulder as he darts off, Derek releases another pokemon, this time a Charizard, that lifts off to take him elsewhere...
