"Aku, use Hydro Pump." Rowan issued the command with a confident timbre, watching as the Blastoise dispatched the grunt's Infernape with ease. Stepping over, he placed a hand on Aku's shell in a show of gratitude and congratulations. "You'd do better to improve the typing pool in your arsenal, one water-type League officer would wipe the floor with your fire Pokémon." A few more words were exchanged, Rowan offering suggestions for additions to their roster before they stepped aside.

"Alright." A hand grabbed the Pokéball on his belt, returning Aku to their capsule. "Who is next?" It wasn't difficult to spend the day defeating grunt after grunt in battles, but at least it helped hone his own skills and provided much-needed experience to some of the more green members of the organization. "Don't everyone step forward at once." A small smirk crawled across his lips, wondering who would challenge him next.

The cowardice of the other grunts beside her was amusing, to say the least. Were the muscled and imposing men around her so afraid of humiliation that they dared not step forward? She smirked ever so slightly. What pathetic posturing and ego. Their weakness would be Elisabeth's gain.[break][break]
The tall, slender blonde silently took a Pokeball from her satchel and tossed it lightly into the air, revealing her Vileplume in a burst of joyous light. "I am ready to learn," she said, her voice a low whisper. "Teach me."[break][break]

“Gladly." Rowan responded with a courteous nod of greeting, grabbing one of the Pokéballs off his belt. "Rowan, a pleasure." Introductions were important in getting to know the newer recruits in the organization, otherwise they were just another face in the vast sea of nameless grunts.

"Think I'll use Sirocco for this one." A Pelipper appeared in a flash of light, quickly taking to the air and circling the arena in which they'd be battling. "You can have the first attack." Rowan wanted to measure what he was going up against before committing to how much power to use.

She hardly expected someone of Rowan's rank to recall each of the lowly recruits gathered today, but something in his demeanor made her feel welcomed nonetheless. Her shoulders relaxed ever so slightly without her realising it as she nodded, signaling her readiness to begin.

As Rowan's Pelipper entered the battlefield in a DRIZZLE of pitter-pattering rainfall, the faintest crease worried itself into Elisabeth's brow. Ah. That would prove a problem soon enough. Some equal footing was in order, then.

"Bryony, I am afraid it is rather drafty in here," she said calmly to her Vileplume. "Would you be a dear and summon some GRASSY TERRAIN?"

Motes of green light suffused the Vileplume as she nodded briskly, and sprouts flourished in the otherwise concrete, urban premises. Lush grass sprang into being underfoot, coaxed by the Vileplume's languid twirl, until the entire section of the facility appeared more like a greenhouse than a place for training Rockets. The rain lingered, of course, but its effects seemed to dampen Bryony's spirits far less than before.

It was a defensive move, but hopefully the right one. No sense in rushing headlong in a battle where she was at a disadvantage.

"I believe the next move is yours," Elisabeth said to her instructor, hands pressed before herself in wait.

"So it is." Grassy Terrain could eventually be a problem, but Rowan wasn't about to let that deter him from giving his all against the recruit. Before long there would be another battle against the League, they needed to be prepared to defend what was theirs and take what wasn't. "Sirocco." His voice got the Pokémon's attention, but a sharp click of the tongue informed them of what attack to use, not wanting to give away anything to his opponent.

A silver aura covered the wings of the Pelipper, whipping both of them forward into the air to create blades from the wind, launching a Wing Attack towards the Vileplume. Amber eyes watched Elisabeth closely, curious as to how she would handle the move and how she would retaliate.

[attr="class","tctext"] Even as Bryony attempted to pirouette out of the worst of the WING ATTACK's range, the gust of air still knocked the wind out of her, reeling. Elisabeth winced slightly; where she had chosen caution, her opponent had chosen to attack her weaknesses immediately and mercilessly. As to be expected of a Rocket Beast.[break][break]

Being the underdog, however, was likely to be a common event in Elisabeth's missions for Team Rocket. This was not a time to give up prematurely. Noting how her opponent did not voice his attacks, she resolved to do the same -- wasn't this, after all, an educational task as much as anything else?[break][break]

When Elisabeth's crystal blue eyes turned to Bryony's, this time she merely nodded at the Pokemon, gesturing in a circular motion. Chirping pleasantly, Bryony did as instructed, the rafflesia petals upon her head unfurling to aim a TOXIC attack upon the nearby Pelipper, covering him in the acidic sludge. [break][break]

The earlier she could begin to whittle away at Sirocco's superior strength, the easier it would be to start regaining her footing. Right now it was a race against time.[break]

"Toxic, very good." Whittling away the health of a stronger opponent was a good measure to ensure that you weren't at a total disadvantage, shifting your opponents focus to maintaining the health of their own Pokémon. With their battle now on a timer, pressure was mounting for a quick resolution. "You created an obstacle for me, meaning my focus is no longer solely on attacking." Of course, he still had time before the poison fully set in.

A set of tongue clicks informed the next move, Sirocco beginning to beat their wings furiously in order to generate a mighty gale of wind. Moments later, a Hurricane formed, launching the full force of the wind attack towards their opponent. Status moves could cut both ways, and if he was lucky this would leave the Vileplume confused.

The clipped reply came just a moment before HURRICANE struck Bryony--its accuracy deadly in the face of the Pelipper's DRIZZLE. This battle wouldn't stretch long enough unless Elisabeth did something to regain her Vileplume's health, and soon.[break][break]
There were, however, small mercies. The roughly one-in-three chance of confusion had not taken effect in Bryony, although the damage alone of the attack was enough to be cause for concern. Had Bryony gotten confused and hit herself, Elisabeth suspected the battle would end within a round. [break][break]

"Bryony," the blonde said to her Vileplume simply, "I believe you know what needs to be done." GIGA DRAIN would not be the most effective attack against the Flying-Type, but it would gain power from the GRASSY TERRAIN, and Bryony would gain some strength from it.[break][break]

The greenery surrounding them brightened as the Vileplume rooted herself in the lush terrain, once more unfurling her rafflesia petals to this time send green bubbles of energy to absorb the Pelipper's life force into her own. [break][break]With any luck, it would drag the battle out long enough to either outrace the poison, or at least make a decent showing in front of the Rocket Beast teaching her.

Between their Giga Drain and the poison from Toxic, Sirocco was in rather dire straights. While the Vileplume regained health, they were only getting weaker by the moment. "You've forced my hand, good work." Another click of the tongue informed the Pelipper, indicating for them to land on the ground.

Roost left them vulnerable for the time being, but allowed Sirocco to recover a large portion of their vitality. Vileplume would be able to get another shot in during the interim, but the Pelipper would come back stronger than before once they were able to take to the air once more.

Watching the Pelipper land was like Elisabeth had been pushing relentlessly against a stubborn, unmoving door, only for it to suddenly open wide with possibility. The recruit had anticipated another round of ruthless attacks, but this provided a window of opportunity: the flight that had rendered the Pelipper so deadly to her Pokemon was, for a brief moment, a non-issue.[break][break]

Once more the Vileplume drew in sunlight, green bubbles spiraling forth from the centre of her petals to absorb the life force of the Pelipper as she basked in the power of her surroundings.[break][break]

The GIGA DRAIN of a moment ago had been a desperate attempt at staving off inevitable defeat. This time, it would be a proper attack: accomplishing regeneration in tandem with brutal force. GRASSY TERRAIN would not merely elevate the damage to something respectable this time. Rather, it would make it... well, against a Water-type Pokemon, rather powerful indeed.[break][break]

The question was how much stronger the Pelipper had become from its ROOST, and how much more powerful Bryony had become with the slight shift in type affinity between them. Frankly, Elisabeth couldn't tell--she only knew this deciding moment could decide if she won or lost the battle.[break][break]

A chance like this likely wouldn't come again, and GIGA DRAIN was a card that could only be played so many times.

As Roost allowed Sirocco to regain their vitality, the Vileplume used the opportunity to sap some of their own through Giga Drain. Another click of the tongue, indicating this time for the Pelipper to take to the air once more, circling overhead like a predator on prey.

“What’s your victory condition, Elisabeth?” Rowan asked, watching as Sirocco started working their wings into a faster and faster beat, generating a Tail Wind in order to provide themselves a strategic advantage. The effects were immediate, allowing them to slip through the air with greater speed than ever before. “What do you have that will guarantee you’ll win?” He was curious.

A childhood of playing chess with her father came to mind, along with his explanation of the different arcs in the game: how to set your beginning position, how to increase your advantage through the midgame while whittling away your opponent's, and how to secure the necessary steps to win in the final stretch.[break][break]

If the metaphor held, then Elisabeth was playing Black pieces on the chessboard -- defensive on the onset, against an aggressive opponent with a built-in lead. Her job had then been to find any chink in the armour of moves Rowan presented, and thus far, those had been precious few. But if any were to appear, it would be now, when fatigue set in. [break][break]

"This is a war of attrition," the blonde said simply, the thin veneer of equality between the two Pokemon's vitality failing to hide the reality of her poor standing in this battle. "I need to keep my Vileplume alive on the board long enough for your Pelipper to eventually succumb to Toxic's hold."[break][break]

That didn't mean her every move had to be defensive, however.[break][break]

Elisabeth's eyes flickered to her Pokemon's with a slight nod. This time, Bryony released another pile of sludge, striking the Pelipper with a spew of ACID. It struck with less strength than the Giga Drain of last round, but Elisabeth already knew that all other attacks would. At least it was a proper attack, and not the weak attempt the first Giga Drain had been.[break][break]

"If there's a victory to be had at this point," Elisabeth said with a faint laugh, "I think it is far from guaranteed, don't you?"[break][break]

“I can tell you my victory condition.” Rowan snapped his fingers, watching as Sirocco dodged out of the way of the Vileplume’s attack with deft speed. “Death.” The Pelipper descended on the opponent on its Tail Wind, moving in close in order to strike with a decisive Wing Attack, one that was aimed to maim or worse.

At the last moment, Rowan let out a sharp whistle, calling off the attack. Sirocco diverted their flight, slipping into the air once more before landing on the ground beside their trainer. “Remember that the League has no problem using deadly force against its enemies, as we’ve seen in Sootopolis City. Battles against them won’t be friendly, and they won’t have rules.”

A hand moved to return Sirocco to their Pokéball, disappearing in a stream of crimson light. “We fight for our survival, and the freedom of Hoenn. That means doing anything necessary to win.” He paused, amber eyes locking on Elisabeth’s own. “Are you sure you can do that?”

Elisabeth considered the words that Rowan Wrynn had spoken in silence. Death. The concept of it did not hold any great power over her. She had killed before, and had no qualms doing it again.[break][break]

Even so, he had a point. Elisabeth had not approached this battle in the manner that it deserved -- with brutality and ferocity alike. She had taken it as a lesson, and been more focused on impressing than on seizing victory through any means necessary.[break][break]

"You are right," Elisabeth conceded at last, resigning as she returned her Vileplume to her Pokeball. "Tactics and strategy within the confines of structure are not guaranteed, when true conflict flips the chessboard over."[break][break]

Her crystal blue eyes met his amber, level as they considered his point. "My specialty is in poison," she said at length. "I operate slowly and methodically. That has been the way I have known survival."[break][break]

She retreated into the multiple nameless faces prepared among the recruits, bowing her head as she returned to one among the many. "I will not limit myself, however. I am prepared to do whatever it takes to survive, going forward. If death is to be my win condition, so be it."[break][break]

Killing had gotten her this far, hadn't it, after all?[break][break]
