By now, Adrian learned to hate the sand. It was coarse and got everywhere, including in your eyes if you weren't careful. Not to mention the looming threat of an oncoming sandstorm was daunting and most unwelcome. "We're almost there," Adrian asserts in a muffled voice, a loose scarf covering his mouth and most of his face. His goggles were caked with dust, but he could see.

Chasing at their flank was a rising sandstorm that hadn't come into peripheral for Adrian yet. They were out in the open heading towards the last suspected location of the Desert Ruins, wanting to see if the ancients had left anything on the matter of the Unown. And so he was tunneling his focus, wondering if it had been buried again.

I really don't wanna be out here all day...

Mars hadn’t expected to be stepping upon Hoenn’s desert before his scheduled trip to the remnants of the ruins with angelo vestri, but alas, here he was, searching with Adrian Malcolm for reasons that were entirely different from those that had originally pushed him to talk to the pilot… or were they?

It would seem as if when it came to Unown, Rocket had a penchant for throwing him and Adrian together and sending them on the hunt. Was it because they both had a substantial number of them or was it simple because they were two of the only people who actually seemed to care about all that?

Either way, once walking upon the desert itself, a single look towards the sandstorm behind them tells him they probably won’t find much this time…

"Sandstorm?" Adrian looks around incredulously-he hadn't noticed anything-but sure enough, a tenebrous wall of silica hangs over the region like a veil, blotting out the sky and earth alike. "F#ck. Yeah, you're right."

They were still hugging the edge of the desert enough that he could see the rocky hills heading back down along Route 111 headed towards Mauville City. He hoped that one of them had a cave, but short of that, it would be useful to have a border at their backs to keep as a frame of reference, like a landmark to keep them on the right track.

"Over there. Maybe we'll find a cave to duck into."

That, and it might give them enough time to outpace the storm. It didn't look to be moving fast, but these kinds of things could be deceptive to the naked eye.

Despite the seemingly calm storm, its pace far outstripped theirs as the desert sands roiled in the wind.

Why couldn’t the ruins be at a nice beach where the sand was only pleasantly warm and didn’t rise in huge destructive clouds that threatened to overtake everything in sight? Was that too much to ask?

Apparently so, because no matter how fast they moved, no matter how close to the rock, it was with a gust of wind that the storm reached them, sand rising while their protective gear did little to stop it from covering them.

”Fuck!” Dust filled the air, impairing their vision and even causing him to cough, and while Mars may not have believed in luck, it seemed as if it was only because of it that he found a gap in the rocks big enough for them to fit through.

The cavern was a bit larger, although it's true depths would have been difficult to assess in the pitch darkness that surrounded them…

It wasn't his first time stuck in a bad situation like this. Heavy snowfalls near Snowpoint City had once trapped him in a whiteout. But it still left a sinking feeling inside when your senses started to fail you; he could hear almost nothing of use, see little but the tenebrous wall of dust encapsulating them.

O - - r - - r e ! I can't-what'd he say!?

Adrian manages to detect their AURA a step ahead of him, which he follows. When he manages to file in behind them, he clambers around feeling helpless. He can only barely make out their silhouettes.

"We need a light..." Hands on his knees, he races to catch his breath before sifting around for a pokeball. A Starmie ejects from the pokeball when activated, its natural ability to ILLUMINATE the environment coming in handy. Bit of a godsend, even. Since they were forced to hide out in the cave, Adrian tried to find a comfortable place to sit.

"Whew... What a shit show." How long might the sandstorm last, he wondered. Rummaging through his backpack, he tears a canteen out of its holster, slaking the thirst he'd built up in their mad dash.

Up until this day, Mars would have considered a statement like saying he “hates sand” to be a huge exaggeration, but now that he found himself quite literally stuck in a cave because of it, it seemed rather fitting.

The light produced by the Starmie was welcomed, and it was with a sigh that he slid down to the cold ground, reaching for his own canteen in order to take a drink.

”So much for finding the ruins. Let’s just focus on getting out of here, the last thing I want is to get lost in a sands–”

Mars found himself interrupted by a sound akin to hissing. More than just that: along with the sound, sand began to rise even within the small cavern, causing him to scramble to cover his nose and mouth with his scarf.

”What the hell?! Even in here?!”

Water sputters out of his mouth when he realizes a Sandaconda is spitting sand from its burrow, instinctually clambering back against a wall and activating his eyes to see if he can't make out its physical form. Still coiled, it ejects sand hoping to deter them from staying.

They can only bet on its passivity for so long.

There's a fuckin' storm out there, not that the Sandaconda would afford them the consideration, being a wild thing.

This was going to go one of two ways...

"Starmie," Adrian begins, but the Sandaconda will have none of it. Its body lunges forwards towards him, wreathing its coils around him before any verbose command can be given, its muscles constricting.

TIGHT—!

Fingers scramble to try and claw at the serpent's hide, though his digits roll off its sleek hide, struggling to gain any purchase. But for a mercy, he is able to maintain contact for an extended period of time. Provoked by an intense fight or flight response, Adrian's aura begins leeching the Sandaconda's own, whittling away at its lifeblood... The sensation of infinity energy is intoxicating.

For what seemed like an eternity Adrian couldn't breath, his skin turning red from the sheer strain, but as the vise grip on him weakened and the blood came coursing and left him lightheaded but very much alive, he came to. In needy, gasping breaths he caught his second wind, stifled only by the weight of the limp cadaver strewn over him. Awash with mixed feelings of euphoria and malaise, he likens the experience to some of his worst trips. "...Fuck!"

Adrian felt awful all over, and worse yet he was wrapped up in a dead snake whose life he'd just hard lined. A hand raises to his forehead, fingers running over the clammy veneer of sweat into greasy streaks of stygian. I'm fine.

What seemed like an eternity was in fact a few agonising seconds. Seconds during which Mars could do no more than watch the scene unfold before him. He had called out his Lurantis in case there was a need to cut Adrian free from the snake’s grasp, but soon enough the avatar had dealt with the wild pokémon himself – Yveltal’s life-stealing blessings fully displaying themselves.

It was both horrifying and awe-inspiring at the same time.

”Holy fuck.” The spewing of sand stopped just as the Sandaconda seemed to grow limp, Mars soon realising the grim reason for this.

The Sandaconda was probably dead.
[break][break]
”Are you alright?”
[break][break]
It was cautiously that he approached to help Adrian break free from the Sandaconda’s grasp, although it would have been hard to tell if that caution was because of the hostile wild pokémon or because of the avatar himself. The snake’s body was as heavy as it was unmoving, and once it fell to the ground, the admin sighed.

”It’s too heavy to take to the black market with us, but the skin would probably fetch a good price.”

He looked at his Lurantis then, leaving the Grass type’s sharp blades to deal with that part of the ordeal.

"Yeah... sure." Adrian manages a few exasperated words while pulling himself together, deigning to rise and get an assessment of his physical health. Despite feeling like an orange that had been squeezed and very nearly juiced, he didn't feel like anything was broken... yet.

Perhaps in stealing it, he had supplemented himself, although once again the incompatible burn of energies not belonging courses through his arm, slightly less unpleasant with every fresh attempt.

Lurantis was wrapping up while he took a few practice laps around the cave before ducking his head out to check outside. It looked like the worst had passed, but the air was still heavy with a sweltering heat. "...Ready?"

Am I? He would just have to be.
