"Took you long enough." Adrian couldn't be sure where Martin was coming from; it wasn't good practice to say something so sensitive over the phone. He'd been forced to start using burners lately. It wasn't something he enjoyed, having to fumble between phones and such, but he supposed the alternative was allowing the League to actively track them, uncover their identities... Yeah, no.[break][break]

At Adrian's side is a strange, green Ekans exhibiting preternatural qualities: Beneath the light of the evening sun, as twilight threatened to take hold upon the mountain, its body adopted an unearthly glow. Strange, lambent symbols appeared along its body. Things just kept getting weirder and weirder by the minute in Hoenn. Right now it was these babies coming out of the newest hatchery.[break][break]

Wake up in Mauville Hills, a commute to Slateport for work, then a trip to Sootopolis to spend some time at his other office, and some afternoons, a short flight to Mt. Pyre for the sake of a hike before heading back home. This is one of those afternoons, and while his Noivern is usually his preference when it comes to choosing a pokémon to fly on, as of late, his dark-winged Braviary has become surprisingly agreeable.

It’s Boreas that takes him to Mt. Pyre, but the huge bird is called back to the confines of a Luxury Ball before heading over to meet Adrian Malcolm – perhaps for the sake of allowing him some rest.

It’s a good thing too, because once Mars sees the glowing Ekans, there’s no doubt in his mind that the Braviary would have tried to eat it for lunch.

”Peculiar. Where did you find it?”

He suspects the answer, but his gaze quickly wanders from the Ekans to their surroundings – always searching for the elusive Symbol Pokémon he has previously encountered up in this eerie mountain.

But the namesake was evident in the specimen, which glowed an eerie green. Like a neon garden snake, making it a freak of nature.[break][break]

If it was related to the Unown Report, Mars would know.[break][break]

Their interest doesn't seem to spark any thought in this oddity besides trying to understand it. No revelations to be made. It would have been interesting to see if Martin had a reaction, which might have suggested more pointedly at the involvement of certain characters in the unsuccessful attacks on avatars relating to the Unown.[break][break]

Adrian is not interested in combating the wild pokemon, and the observers make for poor sport, able to anticipate the Ekans' baser impulses and boasting natural affinities countering it. So instead it remains coiled, trying to maintain its warmth atop the bluffs of Mt. Pyre.[break][break]

"Apparently infinity energy is getting a little out of whack." Both of them would recall the Tree of Life raid and the arrival of Xerneas from another plane.

It would be great if his connection to the Unown Report made it so he could immediately recognize anything even mildly related to it, but the truth is that it does not. All Mars can do is pull at the strings when he senses their presence before him; grasping at straws and sometimes perhaps even finding connections that aren’t real at all. He has no way to verify if most are real or not, so he often assumes the worst until proven otherwise.

”The hatchery…” The mention of it does spark something, and he turns to look at the Ekans once more. ”I hatched a few weird things there too… Pokémon with Pokérus.” A virus. One he had heard of months ago and lies engraved in his memory…

Only recently has he been introduced to Illumina pokemon, though their aura is somewhat unusual to his discerning eye. He shares Mars' assumptions about what brought this strange virus to Hoenn in the first place, but not the exact origins.[break][break]

"The Xerneas that we brought back with us wasn't originally from here; it must have something to do with it." And to that point he should have considered the grave implications that may have. For now Yveltal remained reclusive, dormant in its vigil, but the scales were ever tipping away in favor of life. Thriving beyond the intended scope, draining the land's precious, finite resources.[break][break]

Adrian doesn't truly notice the pokemon around them while they engage in speculative discussion, lost in thought as it were. "At least, I find that the more likely of the two."[break][break]

The crystalblooms weren't something he'd heard of either.[break][break]

Adrian Malcolm has a point, and it makes Mars wonder why he himself hadn’t thought of the Life Pokémon in particular. Probably because he doesn’t have an unquestionable bond with the pokémon that is both Xerneas’ match and antithesis, but still… Could it really be the cause for all of this?

Balance. The Darkest Day is supposed to be here, in Hoenn, attempting to destroy balance as they know it. But, instead of the foundation of life being stolen, life is thriving more than ever, and Yveltal hasn’t fallen like their visions had shown them. Could it be that the Lake Guardians had been mistaken? Or, is this perhaps the calm before the inevitable storm that awaits them?

”Sounds like you have some idea as to how to do that.” It’s casually yet carefully that Mars watches their surroundings as they talk, for the most part ignoring the wild pokémon nearby. As long as they don’t bother him, he won’t bother them.

”Bryan?” Mars hadn’t expected Adrian to be the type to care much for the wellbeing of his fellow Rocket Beast, but considering the bond between their legendary patrons, it does make sense. ”He seemed alright last time I saw him. Now, business as usual involves a whole lot of actual business for Mars, but Adrian is right all the same, and all they can really do is prepare. That’s what he himself has been doing, at least; training his pokémon to become stronger, looking for answers, and trying to come up with solutions to their more obvious problems. For example, this plan of theirs.
