"Have you ever killed anyone, Elisabeth?"

Even though the relief her words had invoked in him was palpable, the frankness of his following question briefly rendered her silent. The reasoning for it felt uncertain: Rowan Wrynn had already confided one moral quandary with Rocket, so who was not to say that this would be another he found umbrage with?

Elisabeth was among monsters, however. That had been her chosen path. So she faced him and said, calmly and directly:

"Yes. I have."

His amber eyes would see no guilt, no remorse, no apology in her own. Merely resignation, and acceptance of the past for what it was.

"Why do you ask?"

Rowan went on to explain, eyes shifting away from their own now.[break][break]

"I hope I never have to, but I know some day I might." He admitted, chewing on his lip idly. "I'm a Beast after all. I just want to know what drives someone to kill."

This time when Elisabeth lifted the needle in hand, she examined it as if it were something else entirely. Sharp, pointed. A weapon, rather than a domestic tool.

"You assume it was just one person, I notice. That's kind of you."

Poison was a peculiar trade, in that way. Was it indirect murder and torture by proxy to create something that others wielded to harm and kill?

Elisabeth believed so.

Onyx Lamore had died to the Toxapex poison she had cultivated. angelo vestri had likewise suffered the paralytic effects of her Toxel poison. Zev Harcourt had finished off a murder that she had slowly begun with the ingestion of Roselia extract, or 'Devil's Breath' -- a tactic she had done before with Cillian Quinn, to dispatch a rising and corrupt local politician.

What Rowan Wrynn was asking her now, however, was importantly revealed in his follow-up statement: "I just want to know what drives someone to kill."

"The answer you're looking for is simple, Rowan. It's survival."

When she stabbed her needle into the fabric of his costume once more, it was with a near-fatal precision. She lowered her gaze to the costume, finding a rhythm in the work as she spoke of uncomfortable subjects aloud.

"It took me a long time to commit my first murder. Years. It was not in my nature, truthfully. As you well know, the study of plants and botany is one of nurturing, of growing, of preserving life."

The repetitive motion of sewing soothed her. Calmed her. Kept her voice even.

"But to understand life is to understand its opposite, too. And in that understanding of death, I was able to defend myself when I was cornered. It is why that is my focus as a trainer: Poison."

Her finger slipped and caught on the pointed edge, red droplets welling as she paused, wincing.

"My first kill was a man who had too much power over me. A man who did not value my freedom. And so I had to take it by force."

The golden wedding band on her left hand gleamed, an unspoken answer to his question as she blotted her fingertip on a handkerchief.

He didn't know what it was about Elisabeth that made him want to spill his guts, but there was no denying the woman was similarly damaged, perhaps commiserating could help both of them grow. "I left Galar because of him. I knew that if I didn't I'd end up..." Rowan paused, looking down at the floor. "I didn't want to spend the rest of my life in prison, you know?" Leaving was easier than giving into the murderous urge, he wouldn't let his father continue to keep him prisoner, even after he would have been dead.

Elisabeth folded the costume, placing it aside, and listened to Rowan Wrynn.

When he said he understood, she believed him.

There was something about being in Team Rocket that made Elisabeth feel safe, paradoxical as the notion was for a criminal organisation. Perhaps everyone who had joined alongside her was, in some way, running from something.

The same way that she was.

"I'm glad you were able to leave Galar, without killing him," Elisabeth said softly. There could be no doubt that she meant every word. "If I had been able to do the same, in Kalos, I think..."

I think I wouldn't have joined Team Rocket at all.

Her words trailed off here, ultimately useless and meaningless.

"I'm glad you didn't have to do what I've had to," she repeated again, more firmly this time. "I hope you never have to."

That transgression had already been crossed, for her.

So if it spared others the necessity of doing the same, she'd descend further into the depths of her own depravity.

The Beast chuckled, imaging themselves working somewhere like the Aether Foundation. [break][break]

Perhaps it wasn't so far fetched after all. "Hell, is that the time?" They'd been talking for so long he'd hardly noticed that he was running late. "I'm supposed to meet Adrian for dinner. Hope you don't mind me dashing, yeah?"

"Somehow I can't imagine you in a Silph Co. cubicle," Elisabeth teased, something genuine sparkling in her green eyes. "There are different circles of hell, you know."

Time had flown indeed, but Elisabeth didn't regret the distraction that Rowan Wrynn had offered her.

The blonde lifted up his completed costume with the silent pride of someone who labored with great love in all that she did, and said warmly, "I hope you have a good evening then, Rowan. And that when next we speak, it's on happier subjects."

Conversations that seemed rarer each day in Hoenn, as the meteor approached closer, and closer, and closer.
