Slateport City was the closest Hoenn had to the sprawling metropolis that was Josh's hometown, Goldenrod City. The last time he had come to the region was a few years ago, it was for a qualifier to get onto the Pokémon Racing Federation's Gold Circuit, and with a big pay bump at that. Though it was only the equivalent of the minor leagues, it was better than the field of amateurs and hobbyists he was used to competing against. The somewhat tall, black-haired young man found himself in a strange skill bracket among Pokémon racers; he would finish way in front of strong amateurs, but not be able to put up a good race against even lower-caliber professionals.

That was then, and this was now. This was the Year of Arceus 2022. He had become a lot more skilled in the off-season, significantly lengthened by the travel lockdown enacted by Johto's regional government in early 2020. He had a lot of time to practice in those two years; he knew all of Johto's tracks by heart. It was time to make his mark in the Hoenn League, and the closest course was carved into Petalburg Woods' natural features. He had to get there first, though.

Once the yellow-dressed trainer was clear of Oldale Town limits, Josh released all three of his overland Pokémon: Saber, the hyperactive Electrike who immediately let out a yip that was supposed to be menacing but came out adorable; Aslan, the Litleo who was content to chase the much more nimble Saber; and finally, Twilight, the Absol who showed not one shred of emotion. Her horn-blade was soft like table felt when Josh touched it - one of the few ways her trainer could tell she was in a good mood. "Don't go too far off the road, now!" he cried toward the two young and playful Pokémon, uncertain if they actually heard him.

"Now Twilight, if you would hold still for a moment, I need to make sure this won't go sliding anywhere..." Josh said to his Absol as a strong gust of wind blew from the south. Any stronger, and he might have to flip his helmet visor down just to keep the wind out of his face. He wanted to make sure the white Pokémon's jet-colored saddle, matching the color of her forehead and tail blades, was secured but not uncomfortably so.

She had been walking around route 102, enjoying the scenery as she didn't often get a chance to visit the more country side of hoenn. It was all beautiful lush grassland, it was quiet here. [break][break]

The sound of two Pokémon making a ruckus drew her in their direction. She walked over and saw an Electrike and a Litleo playing. She saw a person nearby with an Absol. "Hey! Are these your Pokémon?" she asked wondering if they had owners. She had noticed the saddle on the absol and tilted her head. "What are you up to?" she asked, extremely curious as to what exactly he was doing as she had never seen pokemon riding gear before.

Josh ended up finding one buckle that was a little loose. "Aha, I thought something didn't feel right," he said to himself. Tightening that loop one more notch made Twilight's gear much more secure, with no adverse reaction from the Absol. Satisfied, he swung his leg over the white-furred Pokémon, ready to take off when a female traveler seemed concerned with how rough Aslan and Saber were playing.

"Oh, hi there!" Josh leaned over to see the young woman about his age, Twilight shuffling her feet to allow the two to see face to face. "They are my Pokémon; Saber is the Electrike, and Aslan is the Litleo. The Absol's name is Twilight, and she's a Pokémon trained for racing. I'm Josh, an amateur Pokémon racer looking to turn pro. When the little ones evolve, I'd like them to also be trained the same way." While he was adjusting Twilight's saddle, Josh had lost track of the two, and they had ran way ahead. He let out a shrill whistle and shouted for them, "You two come back here! You can't leave us in the dust like that!"

Saber, overflowing with energy as always, sprinted back toward Josh and the stranger, Aslan following at a more leisurely, but still quick, clip. "I'm just letting these two get exercise while Twilight and I practice for an upcoming race near Petalburg Woods in a few weeks. Other than that, keeping my eyes out for Pokémon that could help me in the Gym Challenge when the season's over." He couldn't help but notice Twilight's horn gradually turning more reflective of the sunlight as Saber caught up and started running circles around her. "Can you relax, Saber? You're making Twilight nervous!"

By now a little curious seedot, she was curious to see what all the commotion was about. Melody crouched down and placed a hand on the seedots head but her expression couldn't help but perk up when she heard the mention of the gym challenge. "Oh, you're gonna take on the gym challenges? They can be pretty tough honestly. I've seen some of them live." she says casually, keeping her gaze on the seedot as she used her free hand to release a Primarina from it's pokeball. She missed Sootopolis, life was simpler as a gym leader. [break][break]

She felt a little bit of relief as it seemed like he didn't know who she was. It was a small bit of relief, she didn't always like everyone who could identify her right away as she missed being able to live anonymously. "haha, seems like your Pokémon are all just raring to go. How fast can they all go?" she asked casually as melody's primarina picked up the seedot and tossed it into the air to play with it. The Pokémon seemed to still be a baby so she was easily won over by play. [break][break]

Melody took out a diveball and bonked it onto the seedot head to see if it wanted to come with her as she watched the pokeball swing from side to side.

Josh couldn't help but notice the female resting a hand on the wild Seedot as though it were her own. Her Primarina was well-groomed; was it a Contest Pokémon? Josh once tried to enter a Pokémon Contest in Verdanturf Town, but what he thought was cool, the judges did not find cool. He did get first place in the rhythm section for performing a complex beat no one else could keep up with, but bombed the rest of the Contest so badly that he still wound up in last place by a wide margin. That was all the experience he needed on that front.

Even the Primarina was being playful with the grass-type. "Wow, you're really good with wild Pokémon! If I was better with wild Pokémon, I probably would have enlisted with the Rangers during the off-season instead of the Gym Challenge. What's your name, by the way? I think I missed it." Saber and Aslan were finally starting to wear themselves out for the time being, the Electrike in particular sticking his short tongue out and breathing more rapidly.

"The little ones are energetic; what can I say?" Josh replied. "And they'll be even faster when they grow up!" The yellow-dressed racer smiled when it seemed the young lady was asking for a demonstration. "This road is probably rural enough and long enough for Twilight and I to show you! Come on, girl!" The goading wasn't necessary; the Absol's horn-blade hardened; while it wasn't sharp as a sword, it was still hard enough as to not be malleable like it normally is when she is in a good mood. It seemed the white feline wasn't too keen on a demonstration, but would follow along to make her trainer happy.

Once she had sufficient distance to run, Josh flipped his helmet's visor down and leaned low in the saddle. Her claws tore through the short grass on the side of the road as she accelerated. "Now, Quick Attack!" During the resulting dash, it sounded like there was more than one Absol running, based on how rapid her footfalls were. Josh rode past Aslan, Saber, Melody, and her Primarina, giving the traveler a brief look at what his career was all about. Twilight was quick to put on the brakes, too, kicking up a lot of grass and dirt in her path while she dramatically shed her speed as to not leave Melody behind. Josh loudly grunted from how rapid the deceleration was. "Wahoo! That never gets old!" he couldn't help but cry with skyward hands, his Absol having sprinted well above legal highway driving speeds.

Unbeknownst to Josh, the Absol's breakneck run disturbed an Eelektrik that had been relaxing in a small pond. It floated behind Saber and latched onto him in an attempt to siphon him dry of electricity. Aslan came to the rescue, bellowing a surprisingly loud Hyper Voice roar to stun the wild. The noise rang in Saber's ears too, but being around the Litleo made him more used to it. With the Eelektrik in its weakened state, it was simple for the Electrike to shake himself free.

Josh turned Twilight around and coaxed her into a swift run back toward where Melody and the rest of their Pokémon were at and noticed the carnage. Not wanting to see any more violence amongst his young Pokémon, he pitched a Poké Ball toward the Eelektrik with extra force. "Are you two okay?!" he instinctively shouted, sliding off Absol's saddle and kneeling down to evaluate the Litleo's and Electrike's injuries. They would at the very least need some Super Potion...

Melody watched the chaos unfold so quickly, but she remained calm for the most part. Pokémon were a resilient species, she called out into the air "Dancer!" she said as the gardevoir quickly teleported to her side as the Pokémon was usually nearby listening to her. [break][break]

"Could you help out his Pokémon please my love?" she asked as gardevoir nodded and teleported over to the electrike who seemed to be in more danger and used HEAL PULSE. "Don't worry, your Electrike should be fine. She's my dedicated nursing Pokémon." she tells him as she reassures him his Pokémon will be fine. [break][break]

"My name's Melody. Melody Miro." she says with a small wink, hoping him knowing her name wouldn't reveal who she was. Meanwhile a small little Cherubi waddled up to them, seemingly wanting to battle. "Primarina. Sparkling Aria, then hyper voice." she orders as her primarina slid into battle, singing a note loudly as water condensed in the air and fired a barrage at the cherubi, she tried to resist with a leafage attack but she was out powered. Then when cherubi was launched into the air, primarina followed up with a hyper voice that knocked the pokemon out. Melody lobbed a pokeball at it and waited for the capture to go through.

"Thank you so much," Josh gratefully replied as her Gardevoir released a healing wave around itself, soothing the Electrike's wounds. While the little one wouldn't be running around at breakneck speeds, his need to go to a Pokémon Center was not dire anymore. The little ones still needed medical attention, but they were well enough to rest within their Poké Balls until it was convenient for him to return to the city.

"Melody is a beautiful name," Josh continued after recalling jos Electrike and Litleo, then climbing back atop his Absol. He seemed almost supernaturally in tune with his Pokémon when he held her reins. "Back in Goldenrod, where I'm from, there was a radio show host with that name. Talked about Pokémon Contest stuff. That's all I remember. Tried a Pokémon Contest once and it just wasn't for me."

While there was something majestic about Melody, Josh couldn't quite put his finger on what it was; he just simply rode alongside the female and her Primarina, Josh talking about his racing career and how he wanted to make sure the Pokémon Racing Federation grew just as big in Hoenn as it got in Johto.
