A spotter would arguably be more valuable than a racing partner would, come to think of it. This was a notorious criminal Josh was dealing with, after all.
"That's probably for the best," he answered Swan as he took the earpiece and got it set up.
"I don't think this Drift King has any intention to play by the rules, and there won't exactly be paramedics on standby in case of an accident, like in official Federation races." Josh couldn't help but chuckle at Swan's movie reference.
"Never saw it, but I've heard of it. Not much of a movie goer myself."Swan's smile was one of the funkiest Josh had seen in a while; it seemed like something was on her mind.
"Yikes!" he couldn't help but exclaim after hearing about Swan's Pokémon's voracious appetite.
"What kind of Pokémon is she? You wouldn't think a well-behaved Pokémon would do something awful like that!"
Whether she was willing to answer or not, Josh climbed aboard Twilight and firmly held her reins, then looked at the time.
"Well, it's that time. You make sure to keep me informed of any funny business this Drift King has planned. Anything that will help bring him to justice." He didn't actually plan on turning this Drift King into the authorities; he already had a deal in mind. Whether this terror of the canyon would be willing to listen after a trouncing was another question.
"...See you on the other side, Swan!" With that, the Absol trotted off with her trainer in tow.
Once Josh turned the bend leading northward, he saw a bearded man that looked a little older than he was, astride a Liepard that was even larger than Twilight. He was wearing a black leather jacket, with several of his cronies standing near him in similar gear. The Liepard wasn't that much larger than Twilight, but that dark-type feline in such a large size was hard to get ahold of. It was either stolen from a wealthy trainer or breeder, or the tremendous funding needed to make such a purchase was obtained in a suspect way. He had seen Liepard once in a Master Class Pokémon race; the species was a master at making sweeping, drifting turns. A very appropriate Pokémon for one who called himself the Drift King.
"Y'know that Chimney Canyon is the turf o' the Drift King now, dont'cha?" the Liepard's rider taunted Josh and his Absol as they approached. Twilight returned the taunt with a death stare directed at both Josh's target and the Liepard, whose saddle and collar were studded with metal spokes. Intentional contact of any kind in Federation races was illegal due to the threat of a high-speed impact. This Drift King meant business; a crash into one of those spokes would leave his Pokémon, or even Josh himself, skewered! No wonder the League was interested in apprehending him.
"Y'know what's good for ya, ya back down ri'now." the Drift King continued.
"And I already know about yer little eye in the sky. I got my own friends in high places!" The scum, of course, was bluffing, but Josh had no way of knowing. This did give Josh some cause for concern; if Swan had already been had, he was on his own in a life-threatening situation.
Josh wasn't one to back down from a challenge, especially if it removed a bad name from the career he desired.
"On the contrary, mister Drift King, you're coming with me. This operation you're running has gone on long enough." The two trainers argued with each other, their Pokémon staring each other down.
"There's only one way we're settlin' this. The only way the Drift King ever settles anythin', and that's with a contest of speed. See those flags in the distance?" the Liepard's trainer pointed toward a pair of red and white flags atop a large arch several miles in the distance.
"The first t'pass between those two flags on the other side o'the canyon is the winnah. If ya lose, ya leave fer good, and without yer Absol! Any Pokémon who loses t'the Drift King is forfeit!"Well, that escalated fast. It would give Twilight an incentive to run her hardest, but their nerves both just shot way up. Josh's confidence was shaken a bit. He shook his head, then retorted,
"And if I win, you come back to the Rangers' Guild where you belong--in their custody, and you will return all the Pokémon you've stolen to their rightful owners. You will answer for everything you've done to these poor people!" "Yer on. But that'll never happen. I'm the Drift King, and I've never lost! And especially not t'some kid like ye!" Aside from flipping his helmet visor down, Josh gave no further response.
With that, the two took the line, the Drift King and Josh staring at the racing gang's underling holding the green flag in his hand.
"He doesn't realize he's dealing with a Pokémon racer about to turn pro," Josh whispered to his Absol.
"We got this."The countdown began from "three". Just after "one", the Drift King slammed his studded boots into his Liepard's sides, spurring the dark-type into a frenzied dash before the race had even "started". That cheat! By the time Josh could react, his opponent was already quite far ahead. He felt the warm winds from Mount Chimney's presence against his arms as the Absol already exceeded speeds one could legally drive on the highway.
