Some would call going to multi-level cemetery sculpted onto a mountain for stargazing to be somewhat irreverent, if sacrilegious. Nenet, however, prefers to think of it as practical. The graveyard was sure to be deserted, affording the woman peace and quiet as she made her observations.

Unloading the telescope strapped to her back, Nenet hums absent snatches of a jazz song as the contraption is set up, its tripod settled firmly into the ground to ensure it doesn't topple. A blanket to sit on soon follows and the woman settles there. She pulls a book from her things to begin scribbling the time, date, and weather conditions, preparing for her night of data recording.

As she writes, her head cocks slowly to the side at the sound of something - someone? - walking somewhere behind her. She does not look up from her work, instead pulling out a pokeball to release a Minior, its core hidden from sight. "No teasing, ghosts," Nenet warns into the night air.

It was one of those rare days when Zev had taken off work — both jobs, actually — to have the night to himself. He was not a sentimental sort of person, but Mt. Pyre reminded him of home. Lavender Town had been less of a town with a graveyard attached and more of a graveyard with a town attached. Zev had grown up comfortably there, or as comfortably as a troubled child could. The ghosts, at least, had not judged him as adults and other children had. Instead, they had provided company for the boy more interested in stabbing Rattata and Caterpie to death than engaging in normal hobbies.[break][break]

That was how he'd met Smoke, then a Gastly. Smoke accompanied his master now as Zev walked up the path between gravestones on Mt. Pyre, ever Zev's grinning shadow.[break][break]

A peculiar light ahead of the man caught his attention, causing him to pause for just a moment. It was not the natural light of the candles that burned there but an artificial one, small, like a pocket flashlight or reading lamp. Unobtrusive and narrow, it clearly was not meant to illuminate a large area.[break][break]

Zev approached. What he saw as the source of light almost made him laugh. Neffatari Nzingha sat with her back to him on a blanket, a telescope set up for stargazing. The light was, as he'd guessed, a palm-sized reading lamp for whatever she was scribbling in her notebook. She heard him draw near — he wasn't being stealthy, not this time — and spoke in warning without even looking.[break][break]

"What a coincidence," Zev said as he emerged from the night to stand beside her blanket. He grinned down at her, remembering to put on the persona she knew. "I'll be here all night, too."

Nenet isn't quite shocked, though decidedly surprised when a body levers down on the ground beside her. Apparently, it hadn't been a ghost looking to cause trouble, but a man she suspiciously kept bumping into out in the wild. At least he was pleasant to look at.

"Will you, now?" She laughs out quietly, her eyes falling half-lid as she looks askance to her new partner. "I should put you to work, but I'm not sure how good your physics calculations in the field are." Nenet's eyes sparkle in the limited light, the low timbre of her voice cushioning any sharpness that might be inferred from her words - few did what she could do, after all.

Gently, playfully, she nudges her shoulder against Zev's as she asks, "What are you doing out here in the middle of the night like a haint?" As she awaits his answer she looks back down to her notebook and continues to write. "I'm working," she informs him with a chuckle.

Zev chuckled softly when she teased him, letting her rock his body slightly with the nudge of her shoulder. "Keeping you company while you do complex physics calculations, obviously," he murmured, his own playful smirk illuminated by the light of her reading lamp.[break][break]

Movement at the corner of his vision drew his attention away from Nenet momentarily. It was a Phantump, floating toward them, attracted to the low noise of conversation. Smoke popped out of the ground in front of it, sending it careening with a well-aimed SHADOW BALL. Zev casually tossed an empty Pokéball toward the startled Phantump.[break][break]

"Catching Pokémon, actually," Zev said. "Getting away from the city. Thinking about home."[break][break]

The last part came out unbidden, and he mentally frowned at the unexpected admission. But it might be a good topic for conversation, as long as he didn't reveal too much.

Her eyes bright with mirth, Nenet retorts as she glances askance to her companion, "I think I've heard catching pokemon in a graveyard is bad luck." Despite her words, a soft order of, "Power Gem," is given to her nearby Minior; lighting up the area in a brief flash of light, an Oranguru is caught off-guard by the attack, and soon pelted with a pokeball.

Winking playfully, the woman turns to her telescope and begins to set the lenses. She hums in acknowledgement of Zev's following revelation, her tone distant as she peers through the eyepiece and then makes further adjustments. "What's home like," she asks without any real thought. She had other things to contend with, like getting this telescope properly set up, but she knew people tended to enjoy rambling about themselves if you asked a vague enough question to distract them from the fact that she was almost certainly paying the information little to no mind.

A satisfied smile soon blossoms across her full lips as she peers down through the eyepiece after another series of adjustments, her voice low as she whispers, "Perfect."

What was home like? He did not think much of it in his day-to-day life, not when he had to constantly pretend to be someone else and then spend his "free" hours hunting down people he'd been contracted to kill. In any case, what would a woman like Nenet want to hear? She seemed more engrossed in her telescope than the actual topic of home.[break][break]

If Zev had to be honest, this was the most they'd conversed. In the short time they'd known each other, they'd spent more of those hours occupied in bed than having a conversation. Nenet seemed like she cared little for the latter, and any silence they'd shared had been surprisingly comfortable.[break][break]

"Quiet and full of graves," Zev finally replied as he watched an Elgyem float by in silence. It disappeared into the night without disturbing them. "People left me to my own devices and I preferred it that way."[break][break]

At the sound of Nenet's whispered triumph, he glanced sidelong at her. It occurred to Zev that she probably hadn't even heard him, and if she had, she probably hadn't cared for what he'd said. No, whatever truly fascinated Nenet was in the sky among the stars.[break][break]

Zev could have claimed he was and alien from outer space, or something more sinister such as a killer for hire, and she wouldn't have batted an eyelash. Thus, she answers with a distracted, "That sounds nice."

His following question, however, elicits a decidedly more interested reaction, her face brightening when she looks over to the man. "Minior, my favourite." Nenet replies, her hands already moving to tug Zev into place to peer through the telescope - before she gives up her seat she gives one final look through the lens, ensuring the focus and sharp and where she desires it to be.

"Mount Pyre is one of the few places they will fall in Hoenn - if we're lucky we'll see one tonight. There's a cluster I've had an eye on for a week or so now. I think they're going to fall here, but it's hard to say. They may migrate before they decide to fall." As she speaks, her gaze casts askance at the appearance of a Hatterene. A Confuse Ray followed by a Swift attack from her own Minior sends the wild pokemon tumbling, and the throws a pokeball with ease before turning back to her lecture.

"My doctoral work focuses on the structural integrity of Minior shells and how much their core affects that composition. We already know the colour is determined by the nutrients absorbed in the stratosphere but we haven't studied whether that also affects the shell's thickness and weight."

The detached, dismissive tone of Nenet's comment reminded Zev precisely of his own attitude whenever someone tried talking to him about something he didn't give a shit about. It surprised him enough that he paused in crossing the space between them to give her a sidelong glance. His bewildered expression slowly gave way to an amused grin.[break][break]

Nenet seemed too engrossed by her telescope, however, to notice his reaction. She beamed with excitement at him and pulled him into position to peer through the lens. Even though she scooted aside to make room for him, his body still leaned into hers. He could feel the warmth of her against his side. Shifting, he placed his closer hand on the blanket behind her and leaned his weight on it.[break][break]

Looking through the lens, Zev could indeed see the cluster of Minior, identical to Nenet's own Pokémon. He had never seen one before hers and knew nothing at all about them. But no other topic broached before had caused Nenet to talk so much, and so Zev asked as he raised his head to look at her, "You must like them a lot, huh? What made you interested in studying them?"[break][break]

In the darkness a few feet behind his human companion, a Yamask floated into view. Zev's Gengar intercepted it with a quick HEX. His master followed up with a tossed Pokéball.

Her gaze casting sidelong as she spies a Drifloon in the distance, Nenet gives a subtle shake of her head to her Minior who simply stops moving. "What's your favourite pokemon?" Her gaze shifts, and her hand slips away from Zev's, the notebook picked up instead. Peering through the telescope for a moment, she begins writing anew.

But he watched her, his gaze never leaving her face as she shared the memory. Ever so subtly, her features softened, transforming her from the unreadable woman she often was around him into a person capable of care, love, and longing.[break][break]

Zev was almost tempted to say "that's nice" back, but he refrained. Instead, he watched a Misdreavus float near them and signaled Smoke with a hand. The Gengar cast another SHADOW BALL on the wild Pokémon, and Zev tossed an empty Pokéball at the intruding Ghost-type.[break][break]

"I counted ten," he said when Nenet asked him about the Minior he saw through the telescope. He had done it out of habit. Counting the number of bodies in a room — the number of potential enemies — was second nature to him. "Do you expect them to fall tonight? Or soon?"[break][break]

At her second question, however, he paused. Favorite Pokémon? He didn't have one. His Pokémon were tools, each with their own specific uses. He couldn't speak about his things in the same fond way Nenet spoke about the Minior.[break][break]

"I guess I like Gengar and their pre-evolutions," he said, gesturing to Smoke, who bobbed in the darkness like some ominous balloon. "Ghosts are familiar to me."
