His time is as if a valuable resource; precious and not to be wasted. However, on this day, a very specific time frame has been reserved to be spent at the Team Rocket training facilities, all due to one equally specific matter.

Zev Harcourt is someone Mars holds in high regard. He appreciates the hitman’s skills and talents, and this paired with his efficiency when his job is concerned makes him into someone who the underboss considers to be a valuable member of Team Rocket. There’s only one issue: he has seen the hitman in action, but he’s not sure how well his pokémon hold their own, and if he intends to send Zev on more dangerous missions, this is something he needs to know. Especially given the sort of situations Hoenn has faced as of late. All of Team Rocket must be prepared for battles like the one that took place during the Dawn of the Darkest Day.

And so, he waits, standing besides a large Blastoise that solemnly stares across the arena. She’s a beautiful creature, majestic, her shell being marked by battle scars and her body being built for a fight. At her right wrist, a bracelet bearing a mega stone shines.

Zev was not often called to Team Rocket's headquarters, often only showing up at the behest of one of his bosses. It was the same this time, following instructions to prepare for a Pokémon battle against Martín del Mar. The underboss mentioned it was training as part of the new M.A.G.M.A. Division, meant to prepare all members of Rocket for upcoming engagements with the League. Zev had always considered himself a contractor of the organization, not a fully fledged member, but it was true that recently, he had taken on a few missions that hadn't required his expertise at killing.[break][break]

In any case, Zev did not dislike Mars; quite the opposite, in fact. Their professional relationship would benefit from indulging the underboss with a Pokémon battle.[break][break]

The hitman showed up at the training arena on time, as expected. He was dressed in his tailored black suit and tie, his usual uniform for Rocket business. With a nod, he greeted his opponent for the afternoon.[break][break]

"Mars. It's been a while," he said, his bright blue gaze noting the Mega Stone on the Blastoise's wrist. With that detail in mind, Zev selected a Pokéball from his belt and released his Gengar. "You're the last person I expected to invite me to a Pokémon battle."

”That it has.” Mars greets Zev with a smile, and as it often happens, their attires match. An elegant and perfectly-tailored suit is worn by the businessman and underboss, and on his simple grey tie, an adorned tie pin bears the keystone meant to synchronise with the gem at the Blastoise’s arm. It’s always there, serving as a reminder to people.

A reminder that his power is more than just in his wealth and enterprises.

”Ha! Why’s that? I just realised I’ve never really had the chance of seeing your pokémon in action before.” Not truly at least. Other than during situations like the day they broke into Dewford’s prison in order to deal with an informant. With everything that has happened, that feels like it was a short eternity ago.

”I’ll get us started, then.” He wastes no time and the first action he takes is whistling one short note to which his Blastoise responds. Non-verbal commands. Always. Unless speaking them is absolutely necessary. Mars doesn’t like giving away his intent.

A plethora of attacks could be expected when Calliope readies her cannons, but in this case what is shot towards the Gengar is the chill of an ICE BEAM. One that cuts with its frost and has the potential to FREEZE its victims.

The sudden ICE BEAM smashed into Smoke, encasing the Gengar in a haphazard cage of ice crystals. To escape it, he liquefied his body into living shadow, seeping between the cracks in the ice. Smoke reformed outside of it as the sculpture fell to the ground and shattered into countless tiny fragments.[break][break]

No smile graced Zev's face. He eyed Mars carefully from across the arena, then the man's Blastoise. The large Pokémon had attacked as soon as her master had whistled. Did that sound mean she should attack without orders? Or had the whistle been an order in itself?[break][break]

It was clever, either way. Zev had to admit that much.[break][break]

"Do what you do best, Smoke," he ordered his own Pokémon. The Gengar's grin widened. Keeping a good distance from the Blastoise, he cast HYPNOSIS on her, intending to put her to sleep.[break][break]

As is an imperfect sculpture, the ice that had encased the Gengar is left behind when it takes its incorporeal form, jagged shards falling to the ground and shattering within seconds.

Mars simply watches, paying attention to every detail about the battle before him, and when Zev commands his pokémon to cast HYPNOSIS, that smile of his shifts into a smirk. One of his favourite moves being used against him. Hilarious.

HYPNOSIS falls upon the field as if a heavy veil, and the Blastoise’s firm stands falters, struggling for a moment before finally retreating into her shell to slumber.

”Great choice, but this wouldn’t be much of a battle if Calliope here is sleeping the whole time, no?”
[break][break]
He could wait it out, yes. He’s more than familiar with the usual duration of HYPNOSIS-induced sleep, yet this is not the kind of battle where he has to bide his time and wait for the perfect moment to play his cards. Attrition is Mars’ usual strategy, but sometimes, going all out can work just as fine.

All he does is gently tap on the keystone at his tie pin, and this single action results in light. Light emitted by the keystone and light emitted by its matching mega stone from within the shell of the Blastoise. Her body is soon engulfed by it, and it’s with a resounding roar that she soon emerges: changed, grown, and awakened.

”All yours, Calli.”

At this moment, he leaves the battle up to the Blastoise, and true to her nature, she retaliates in full. A G-MAX CANNONADE is her move of choice, water being shot out of her dozens of cannons directly towards the ghost.

Zev smirked when the HYPNOSIS succeeded at lulling the Blastoise to sleep, but his expression quickly turned serious again when Mars activated the keystone on his tie pin. The hitman wasn't surprised, however; he'd noticed the Mega Stone. He was expecting the mega evolution and would have been disappointed if Mars had eschewed it for a regular battle.[break][break]

The G-MAX CANNONADE slammed into Smoke, throwing the Gengar against the arena wall behind Zev. He watched as his Pokémon slid to the ground, as if he couldn't levitate anymore.[break][break]

"Get up," the man snapped, his eyes narrowed.[break][break]

Frowning, Smoke struggled to his feet, swaying a little before bounding back up into the air. Turning once more to face Mars, Zev tapped the side of his wristwatch where his own keystone was embedded. A similar light shone brightly from the gem, and as Smoke rose, the same light seemed to emanate from within him until it completely engulfed him. It grew and grew until it became massive, taking up much of the space on Zev's half of the arena.[break][break]

When the light dispersed, Smoke had transformed as well.[break][break]

"Take her down," Zev commanded, his voice as cold as the shards of ice that still lay shattered upon the ground. Smoke obeyed, and every shadow in the chamber lanced toward the mega Blastoise at startling speed as he cast G-MAX TERROR.

”Ha. Now, that’s what I’m talking about.” Unlike Zev, there is no frustration to be found in Mars’ tone, much less in his expression. The same smirk from before remains at his lips, and there is something burning in that amber gaze of his. Excitement, maybe. Enjoyment.

True to his name, Mars has always been someone who enjoys battle, strategising, and thinking of creative ways to outsmart his opponents. When this happens to be someone who won’t pull their punches, it makes it all the more interesting.

”Not bad, Zev. You could have been a great professional trainer.”
[break][break]
Mega evolution is one thing. G-MAX TERROR is another. In his mind, Mars goes through what he knows about the move, and a decision is made within a second. Inaudibly to Zev from where he stands, he clicks his tongue.

The Blastoise hears it, though.
[break][break]
Calliope retreats into her shell once more, but this time, the momentum of the motion is used to begin to spin rapidly. Her shell is as if STEEL, defending her from taking heavier damage, and although the phantasmagoric attack meets its mark, it’s immediately countered with a CORKSCREW CRASH meant to for the Gengar that had latched onto her shadow.

Mars continued to make small talk, but Zev had fallen into his usual demeanor when fighting. He did not bother acknowledging the compliment, did not bother speaking except only when he needed to. His eyes watched not only the battlefield but also his opponent and their Pokémon. Even if the battle was meant only to be a test of his Pokémon's skills, he was taking it seriously, as if it were truly life or death.[break][break]

Blastoise's spinning shell hurtled through the air and collided with Smoke, causing the Gengar to scream with agony in a voice that sounded like a chorus of wailing souls in the afterlife.[break][break]

Zev's frown deepened. He did not recognize whatever move Mars' Blastoise had just done. Was it one of those Z-Moves he had heard about? Looking over Smoke, Zev saw that the attack had dealt significant damage to his Gengar. How long could Smoke hold out?[break][break]

Groaning in pain, Smoke nevertheless retaliated. He lashed out with his ridiculously long tongue for a paralyzing LICK.[break][break]

Mars has always loved a good chat. It makes things more interesting, in his opinion, but it also happens to be a test of its own: conversation can often distract an opponent from the battle. So, perhaps it’s a good thing that Zev doesn’ respond. Perhaps it’s a good thing that he’s taking this as a life-or-death situation.

The underboss notices and he makes mental note.
[break][break]
There are many reasons why he considers Zev Harcourt to be a valuable member of Team Rocket, and the potential he has to become a fearsome trainer is one of them. He could do great, if he trained his pokémon to be the deadly weapons they’re meant to be.

That’s what Calliope here is to him; above all else, a valuable tool that suits his needs.
[break][break]
And, being this, when the PARALYSIS caused by a LICK from the Gengar slows her spin, Mars sighs as if slightly disappointed, but he’s quick to raise a hand only for the sake of snapping his fingers. Another command. One that, this time, causes the dozens of cannons of the Mega Evolved Blastoise to point to her opponent once more, a pressured stream being released within seconds.

Powerful, but an attack that will leave Calliope too exacted to act, especially with her mega evolution being close to fading.

The deluge of highly pressurized water from the Blastoise's attack was more than Smoke could take. The Gengar shrieked in otherworldly agony. Then, in a burst of blinding light, he shrunk down to his normal size and form. Too weak to even dissolve into shadow, he simply lay on the floor of the arena, battered.[break][break]

People who knew Zev assumed he felt nothing at all, that his heart was as black and cold as a void. But that was not true. While certain emotions like love and sadness were alien to him, he felt others easily: joy, frustration, contentment, excitement.[break][break]

Rage.[break][break]

At that moment, with Smoke unconscious on the ground, Zev needed no words to express his barely contained fury. The way his face had darkened into a scowl, and the way his hands had curled into white-knuckled fists, said enough. The only thing keeping him from lashing out was Mars standing there in his triumph. He was a man Zev respected, even liked. And as much as Zev wanted to spit venom at the other man, the socialized part him — the part that knew things like etiquette and tact and consequences — crushed that impulse.[break][break]

Zev needed to keep his rapport with Mars intact.[break][break]

How he hated it.[break][break]

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity of wrestling with himself, Zev forced himself to relax and return his Gengar to a Poké Ball. "Impressive," was all he said of the battle, his eyes sliding sideways to consider the mega Blastoise.

Zev’s reaction is somewhat unexpected.

Mars had always known the hitman to be calm, professional, and level headed. It’s something he appreciates about him, even something that makes him like him, but he had wondered how Zev would react to a situation that doesn’t go as he wishes. Frustration, defeat… Sometimes things like those are inevitable, and losing one's cool when everything starts to go wrong usually only makes it worse. He dislikes people like those.

Clear as day, he sees Zev’s anger. He sees the scowl, the hands closed to fists, and he also sees that Zev stops himself.
[break][break]
Good.
[break][break]
Feelings like those are inevitable, but it’s important to keep them contained until the right moment. Mars is very much the same. Or, it’s what he has trained himself to be, at least. What he was forced to become by the people who used to control him.

”It was a decent battle. Your Gengar did well.” He knows the praise will likely mean little to Zev now that he has been defeated, but the words are spoken anyway. Calliope’s MEGA EVOLUTION fades then, and in a flash of light, Mars returns her to her Luxury Ball. ”Have you ever faced off against League officers? They usually use their pokémon.”

Zev disagreed, making the compliment an empty one. Smoke had not done well. In fact, the Gengar's performance had made one thing abundantly clear: not every tool in Zev's arsenal was in peak condition. While he kept himself in top shape, and while he maintained his knives and guns meticulously, he had allowed his Pokémon to grow lax. Lazy. Weak.[break][break]

He would put an end to that, one way or another.[break][break]

"I haven't had to yet," Zev replied. There was no point in lying. He understood Mars' implication and agreed with it — he had to ensure his Pokémon became stronger, no matter what it took. After all, League officers preferred to use their Pokémon in battles over conventional weapons. Men like Zev, who preferred to do their work without the aid of Pokémon, were increasingly rare.[break][break]

"Let me guess: you expect a confrontation sooner or later, what with tensions rising between us and the League?"

Despite the humiliating incident that had just taken place in that combat hall, Mars' admission felt like a triumph. Zev had arrived in Hoenn three years ago on the trail of his brother without any connections or leads. To achieve his goal, he knew he had to work closely with Team Rocket. If he gained the trust of those in authority — no, if he could make them depend on him — then all their resources would be at his disposal. And so he tolerated his partners on various jobs, ingratiated himself to his superiors, and even referred to the organization in terms of 'we' and 'us'.[break][break]

And with Mars' words, it seemed like Zev had succeeded.[break][break]

But the manipulation could not end there. Caleb was still missing. So at the suggestion of the gym circuit, Zev replied, "I haven't, but you're right about needing to be ready. I refuse to be the weak link in the chain." That much was absolutely true.[break][break]

He would have to approach the League's gym leaders carefully. Thankfully, the League had no idea Zev the hitman existed; for all they knew, the only Zev in Hoenn was the Slateport bar owner. Still, he'd have to ensure no aspect of his real self came out during those battles.[break][break]
