Though Gunner laughed at Gideon's challenge, he did not step up to meet it. After all, he didn't feel like pretending to lose to his older brother in a race simply to keep up his cover story. They were enjoying a pleasant outing after a long period apart; there was no need to spoil it with the reminder that Gideon knew very little of Gunner's life.[break][break]

"The defendant will likely go through rehabilitation at a state institute while he serves his time," the younger man replied. "I've read of cases where that's happened before. I'll text you after we find out his sentence, if you like."[break][break]

The brothers reached the crest of the hill, which afforded them a beautiful view of the section of forest ahead of them. In the distance, nestled amidst the trees, was a sight straight out of a fairytale: a small cottage with a thatched roof, its outer walls adorned with vines and flowers. Smoke rose lazily from a brick chimney.[break][break]

"Someone lives here?" Gunner mused aloud. He glanced around the hilltop and spied a fallen tree trunk, the perfect bench for sitting and admiring the scenery. "Should we sit and rest for a bit?" he asked his brother.

Gunner’s laughter was music to Gideon’s ears and goaded a pleasant smile to his lips. It reminded him of old times, when they would play and roughhouse and get into trouble (almost always instigated by the younger Graves brother).

As their conversation continued in a comfortable familiarity, however, Gideon couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret. He wished they could do this more often, could laugh like this more than just every few months. This tinge of sadness didn’t show on the professor’s face, though, and it soon passed.

“I would appreciate that, actually. I’m curious to see how it turns out.” He replied just as they crested the hill.

A quaint cottage greeted them at the top. Older in construction, or at least built to seem that way. Just looking at it eased Gideon into a cozy, easygoing frame of mind.

“Looks like it, if the smoke’s any indication. Quite a ways out of town, though.” At Gunner’s suggestion Gideon’s umber gaze fell on the fallen log. It had been a snag for wildlife at one point, but was now perfect as a bench for the two brothers. The professor approached and sat to one side of the tree, leaving room for Gunner.

Poppy had alighted from his shoulder by this point, startled by something in the trees. Gideon allowed her this time to herself, not knowing she had gone to ward off a CACTURNE skulking nearby.

As Gunner sat down on the other end of the log, a wild Salandit emerged from the underbrush, drawn by curiosity to the two men who'd just invaded its habitat. Guinevere met the lizard before it could reach the humans. The two Pokémon sniffed at each other and exchanged some noises before the Quilava let the Salandit approach.[break][break]

Gunner, who had taken out a bag of trail mix, raised his eyebrow at the lizard. After a moment's pause, he tossed a chunk of caramel at it. The Salandit snapped it out of the air with its mouth and munched on it happily.[break][break]

Smiling with amusement, Gunner looked back over at the cottage in the distance. "What sort of person do you suppose lives there? A forest witch?" he joked.

An alert call from Poppy caused Gideon to tilt his head, where he saw her perched triumphantly atop the CACTURNE. Gideon threw a Poke Ball to catch the downed Pokémon before it has an opportunity to retaliate.

As his brother fed the spooked SALANDIT, he lowered his arm, palm open, in a nonverbal request for Gunner to share his trail mix. He’d know that Gideon wasn’t much of a nut guy, so hopefully the handful consisted mostly of raisins and pretzels, maybe a few chocolate tidbits. You know, the best parts for the best brother.

“The most likely scenario, I’d imagine.” Gideon said through a humored grin, continuing the joke. “Does that make us Hansel and Gretel, lost in the woods?”

Meanwhile CRISPR was making friends with what looked like a large mushroom, but what was in actuality a PARASECT. He trilled away, conversing in a language that neither human could understand. They seemed to get along from the get go - perhaps the butterfly could convince the wild Pokemon to join them? He was surely embellishing the positive aspects of moving to Gideon’s Insectarium.

After receiving a treat, the Salandit agreeably entered an empty Pokéball, which Gunner minimized and pocketed with satisfaction. Just in time, too — a Bulbasaur emerged from the underbrush, catching Guinevere's attention. The Fire-type rushed toward the wild Pokémon with FLAME CHARGE, catching him unawares and scorching his skin. Feeling sorry for the injury, Gunner threw a second Pokéball at the burnt Bulbasaur.[break][break]

"We better be good children and avoid it for now," Gunner said of the cottage, finishing the joke. Growing more serious, he continued, "Besides, that would be trespassing, and I don't really want to disturb a person who clearly wants to be left alone, if they live this far from the city."[break][break]

Gideon's outstretched hand did not go unnoticed. Gunner poured a handful of trail mix into his brother's palm, inwardly disappointed to see he'd given Gideon a huge amount of chocolate and pretzels.[break][break]

The universe could be so cruel.[break][break]

"Should we head back in a little bit?" he asked, adopting an air of nonchalance instead before popping another scoop of trail mix into his own mouth.

Gideon gladly munched on his treasure trove of chocolate and pretzels, enjoying the mix of salty and sweet as it intermingled on his taste buds. The universe was truly favoring him today. Yummy snacks, quality time with his brother, beautiful shots of wild Pokémon and a few new additions for the Insectarium.

It was a great day. Too bad it was already starting to wind down.

"Good point. We'll leave the witch to her devices, then." Gideon responded, wiping his hands together after eating the last of his trail mix. "We should probably get going, yeah, if we want to make it back before sundown."

With that he stood, whistling for his Pokémon to return to his side. CRISPR did so without fuss, but Poppy returned with something clenched in her talons... a FOONGUS? A wriggling, frantic FOONGUS. Gideon quickly captured it and the waved for Gunner to join him on the trail.

"Let's get going. Oh, and tell me your thoughts about dinner..." Gideon asked in a warm voice as he descended down the path they had come.
