Trainer Hill was a place Josh had fond memories of. Lots of fond memories. It was where he took his first steps toward the position he got himself into. It was amazing how little his Gym had changed from the Minor League to the Major League, yet how much more overwhelmed he was just by virtue of being an official Gym Leader now. As he rode Saber past the outdoor portion of the facility, Josh recognized the paths of the tracks he had at his old Gym. While the bleachers, starting arches, scoreboards, and the like were all gone, having been moved to his new Gym in Mauville, he could see their positions as though he were still at his old facility. Good times, Josh. Good times.

Josh entered the first floor of the main tower and saw his old lobby. His wallpaper was intact, though the old lobby itself was empty. There was a lot of evidence of general disrepair. No wonder the League was hiring Major League Gym Leaders; there were seemingly very few applicants in the Minor League to promote up!

Consulting the site directory, Minor League Director 's facility was on the top floor. He withdrew Saber before heading into the elevator, taking it all the way up to the floor seemingly dedicated to the Battle Arcade. While it wasn't as massively spacious as Josh's Gym was, it was far gaudier, looking like a game show studio.

The Mauville Leader sent his Manectric out again, then opened the door to the studio and greeted the Director. "Hi there Kyle! It's been a while!" Saber barked a greeting, saying hello to Kyle as well. "I miss seeing you since I got promoted out! I owe you everything for giving me the chance to take the position I'm in now. Thank you so much." While the Gym match wasn't the primary reason Josh had signed up for a match, it would be a good backdrop for the true purpose of his trip: an audience with Entei's Avatar. He was the best lead Josh had in his chase of Raikou.

"I just want to say this up front. After our match, can we sit down and talk for a while? I've had a few questions burning in my mind since becoming Mauville's Gym Leader and you're the person to come to for them." He took his position behind the pedestal across from the Big Board, the strobing lights flashing among various panels on said board. "But for now, I have a challenge to get through. And...STOP!" He slapped the big red button in front of him in an effort to time it to a favorable panel.

and as scheduled, josh devlin walks in for a challenge.

"you're going to kill me with that much praise," he tells josh as he receives more than enough flattery than he can handle. he balances it out in his own way. "if you want to thank anyone, thank the higher ups. they're the ones that forced me to do this."

the urge to pet the manectric gets resisted as josh takes his turn on the wheel.

a split second sooner and it would've hit the smallest chance of the worst outcome. the tile blinks though, inching itself back to the black tile. he raises a brow, wondering if it's a rotom's work.

the lights dim. a spotlight shines on the battlers, where the challenger can see the leader fiddle around a pc to change his party up. gone were the electric-types and in goes kyle's flavor of the day.

"yeah, sure. take all the time you need to talk with me after this," he casually answers as he decides on the six. "doubles good enough for you? 6v6?"

a chingling and a dunsparce come out of their pokeballs.

"Director, you don't have to be so humble," Josh replied in an almost pleading voice. "Take some credit where it's due!" As the flashing lights slowed to a stop, they flashed between a black tile and a tile that would have been very favorable for Josh. "Thank you. Because... a lot happened, as I'm sure you are aware. What with being Hoenn's Champion and all. I have a lot I want to talk to you about. Both about my future as a Gym Leader, and about... aspirations beyond."

In an almost glitch-like state, the lights rolled back to the black space, the lights going completely dark as a sinister think cue blared from the studio's sound system. He rolled his eyes as he found himself and Kyle under the lone lights, tension high. He had no idea what to expect, but it was going to be Arceus awful. "Sure thing!" With that, he sent out two of his most nimble Pokémon, Aslan and Resheph. It never looked right to him seeing his Pokémon de-geared, what with how much racing he did. It was as though their saddles and bridles were a part of the Pokémon themselves. "Come at me, Director!"

aspirations and stuff... he's not really the best person to talk about it. the lack of long term goals, motivation and enthusiasm on important things in life make him the least capable person to give him advice.

he smiles nervously. he's guesses he's not going to give him the answers he wants, but he'll do his best.

josh's taunt gets kyle's pokemon riled up more than him, but kyle nevertheless reacts with a chuckle, breaking the anxiety he had let his head build up from just a few words from the new gym leader.

this was a battle. he's just supposed to have fun now. "well, more like you should be the one to come at me."

his opponent sports a pyroar and a dragonair. one commonly runs long-ranged moves, while the other was a toss-up every time. unless josh is the type to go against his pokemon's strengths in favor of unpredictability, he should be facing against two offensive mons.

"you're setting up trick room," he mentions as he points to the chingling before his finger shifts to his dunsparce, "and you're setting up coils."

there's a chime from the pokemon, and weirdness starts to fill everything up. the space shifts itself, the pressure inside the room feeling heavy, not unlike what one experiences during a time-space distortion. meanwhile, the dunsparce sits in the same spot, limbering up its body to hype itself up for the fight.

The Director looked awfully humble for a Champion, sending out a Chingling and Dunsparce to match Josh's extremely speedy Pokémon. "Aslan, NOBLE ROAR!" Josh commanded, his Pyroar taking a deep breath before letting out a primal roar intended to shake the mettle of all three of his opponents. The Leader very much doubted it would work on his opponent, but it would rattle the Pokémon enough for Resheph to get the upper hand. "Resheph, take out that Dunsparce with your DRAGON RUSH!" Lowering her horn and enveloping herself in royal purple draconic energy, the blue serpent lunged at the small snake with blinding speed.

Before the Pokémon crashed into one another, Josh's worst nightmare came to fruition. A dome of sinister energy, pulsing in psychedelic violets, materialized around the studio's battlefield, its screens simply floating in midair. The racer's Pokémon, almost invisibly fast before, looked like they were being played back on a high speed camera. It was almost like what the eyes of a Ninjask would see, if the studies were correct about its perspective being in super slow motion compared to what the rest of the world saw. The distorted dimension was none other than the problem the League held his job as a Gym Leader over his head for.

TRICK ROOM.

In all of his Gym Challenges up to this point, Josh had not once defeated a challenger who utilized the move. Not once. There was one hope for him in this battle. He had a long meeting with about handling Pokémon that utilized TRICK ROOM to take his speed advantage away from him. This battle would be a test to apply that knowledge and prove to the League he had the skills to be a truly great Gym Leader.

on one hand, it's probably the right choice to target down the threat from the two pokemon on the field.

the chingling watches in horror as the dragonair rushes the other serpent. although shaken from the pyroar's earlier noble roar, it's defensive stance from coil at least cushions some of the injuries it would've otherwise received.

a ring sounds. another warning flashes on the big screen.

weather/terrain change
sunny day

the roof opens up, and where the clouds were when josh entered the building was nothing but clear skies. harsh sunlight bathes the battlefield with light, making it difficult to read the words on the led screen.

as the challenger chooses his target, opportunity costs in choosing the attacker over the support shows itself.

"chingling, we're yawning the pyroar." it was the obvious option, given the weather. "and dunsparce? roost."

it's a heavy blow that it suffered, but the dunsparce can brush it off for a moment's rest. joining him would be the pyroar later, as the chingling opens its mouth to put the fire-type to sleep.

kyle takes it slow, forcing the challenger to a decision: go all-in and try to take down a pokemon on his side before he's incapacitated, or play it safe.

Josh remembered this tactic well from his Gym battle with @callan. While it wasn't exactly this combination of Pokémon he had used in the battle with the newest member of the Elite Four. As threatening as the Dunsparce was, he knew the long-term problem in the battle would be not the offensive Pokémon, but the supporting Pokémon. Not one, but both the challenger's Pokémon let out loud yawns that could be heard over the sinister battle theme blaring from inside the Distortion-like TRICK ROOM. Was the twisted space reversing more than just the speed of Pokémon within?

"Change of plans!" Josh cried, his voice sounding like it was coming from beneath the sea. If his Pokémon fell asleep, Chingling could maintain the TRICK ROOM for the entire battle. He could not let that happen. Josh was Hoenn's King of Speed, damn it. And if he had any advantage, he was going to press that advantage--and the advantage of the harsh sunlight that had began baking the studio. "Aslan, FLAMETHROWER! Just from where you're at! Resheph, HYPER BEAM! Focus on Chingling, but try to catch them both in it!" That tactic had come from Josh's Gym Battle with . For all the shit the League was giving him about his battle performance as a new Gym Leader, he had incorporated points that worked in all of his previous Gym Battles. He was no stranger to innovation, either.

The TRICK ROOM slowed the speed at which Aslan exhaled his FLAMETHROWER attack, as well as the speed Resheph was able to undulate around the boundaries of the top-floor arena to set up an attempt to tag both Kyle's Pokémon in the beam of orange, pure energy coming from the Dragonair's horn. The speed of the attacks themselves, though, were unaffected. The surge of pure energy and fire raced toward the psychic-type in a cross pattern, Josh crossing his fingers that the added speed the distortion bestowed wouldn't be enough for his tactic to fail.

Resheph was the first to fall limp, sawing logs from using such an exhausting attack while already tired. Josh's Pyroar, likewise, could not keep his eyelids open, and the tendrils of sleep claimed him as well. They would both be sitting ducks for Dunsparce...and whatever Pokémon fought alongside it in the aftermath of the brutally powerful combination.

the chingling and the dunsparce both try to run away from the attack. the trick room gives them maneuverability, although it was unfortunately not enough to get them out of danger.

the hyper beam goes straight to the chingling. as the beam cannot swing fast enough to reach both after two of kyle's pokemon ran to opposite directions, the dunsparce has instead only managed to get hit by the fire-type's flames. it stung, but wasn't enough to take the dunsparce down in one hit.

kyle recalls his psychic-type before replacing it with another. the oranguru appears on the opposite side of the battlefield as the dunsparce, where the chingling was.

"rock slide."

the dunsparce takes the opportunity to hit both of the incapacitated pokemon with rock slide. the oranguru instructs it to do another. the field gets filled with rocks, giving unevenness to the smooth, flat floor of the gym.

The battle dais of Kyle's studio was covered in gravel, making it difficult for Josh's Pokémon to keep their footing even when the Arceus-damned distortion faded away. The challenger's two Pokémon didn't even notice a thing as the bladed rocks cut into their scales, both deeply imprisoned by the shackles of sleep. It took a second or two for him to realize his Pyroar was also no longer breathing. His Dragonair, despite being half-buried in sharp rocks, remained asleep, unaware of her predicament.

In a panic, Josh withdrew his unconscious Pyroar and sent out his Absol, Twilight, who also moved sluggishly in the inverted dimension. "NIGHT SLASH the Oranguru, Twilight!" the challenger commanded, his partner charging toward the Oranguru in what appeared to be slow motion. The mountain-adept, feline-like quadruped was at the very least used to the rough terrain. She didn't need that slowing her down, too. Once she was in range, the Absol raised her head, then rapidly swung it to the opposite corner, attempting to gore the psychic-type with her horn-blade.

it's no water-type move, but it was still effective against the pyroar.

an absol replaces it. with his current pokemon on the field, the disadvantage is there, unless they make use of the trick room and abuse the mechanics in place set by the effect.

the psychic-type manages to gauge the movements of the absol, moving further from it at a much faster speed than it can rush. it guides the swipe through multiple rocks from the earlier attack, weakening the blow just enough to survive it.

the impact throws the oranguru closer to the dunsparce, who receives the same command from his trainer. "rock slide."

much like earlier, rocks start to rain from above, hitting enemies indiscriminately on the battlefield. it's serene grace may attempt to make its opponents flinch with its sheer finesse, and if it didn't, the oranguru would make sure of it.

"and you're instructing him again."

as another bout of rocks fall, another ring from the screen appears. kyle has to squint to see through the bright sunlight, breathing in relief when he realizes it's not him.

challenger tells one fun fact about themselves

he really should change some of the results, given that they're not really changing the battles much, unless they rely on verbal commands that it stops opponents from issuing moves.

TRICK ROOM was perhaps the most obnoxious trick in the book for the Mauville Leader. It not only reversed his speed advantage, but it took every tactic he avoided having to worry about by virtue of having such a fast Pokémon team. In this match, all his Pokémon were exposed to that very weakness. Remembering the advice of , Josh did have a trump card, though. There was one way to ensure he got the jump on a foe, even inside this warped dimension.

"Twilight, QUICK ATTACK the Oranguru!"

While the ROCK SLIDE was too omnipresent to fully dodge, the added speed of Twilight's Boost would let her attempt to take the barely-standing Oranguru while she still had all her strength. It was speed not subject to the twisted space of the TRICK ROOM, either. Hit or miss, the Rock-type barrage came raining down, Josh's white Pokémon squinting in pain as one of the rocks landed on top of her horn-blade.

Resheph aroused after being slammed with the first boulder barrage, but was pinned beneath too many big stones to even think about escaping before the second left her down for the count. The tide of battle had shifted in the Leader's favor. As he sent out Pinky, the think cue changed to something less sinister as Josh was required to answer a question about himself.

"Ummm...I studied mythology at Ecruteak University for a dual credit course in high school. My favorite Pokémon to learn about were Raikou, Entei, and Suicune." Fitting, considering the boss Pokémon awaiting him at the end of the battle was Entei...

"ooh! mythology, huh? no wonder hoenn called to you."

a place where legendaries appear on the daily was a mythology nerd's dream come true.

his thoughts were interrupted by the absol zooming in with quick attack. it definitely bypasses the limitations set by the trick room, but kyle isn't sure if it was the right move for him.

"shouldn't you stall out the trick room instead?" he asks as he watches the absol get face-to-face with the dunsparce. "ah! nevermind that."

he didn't want to backseat after all.

"secret power."

the absol is never given a chance to rest as soon as it knocks out the weakened oranguru, that ragdolls like a wobbuffet, with its attack. as soon as it comes into range, the dunsparce is quick to react with it being in trick room.

it glows in an aura, before tackling the absol right on its side with its coiled up body.

kyle recalls the oranguru, and replaces it with his gastrodon. it comes with an icy wind, slowing its opponents down with chill. advantageous in trick room, but not what happens after.

Dunsparce's uncoiling lash in the form of SECRET POWER was more than enough to retire the Absol. Josh was now down an entire Pokémon, but he had several advantages. One, Chingling's TRICK ROOM was flickering like a fading space-time distortion. He would be able to turn this battle around with the blitzkrieg tactics his Gym was well-known for. Little did he know how badly he needed to do so, what with the nasty surprise that awaited him. Second, he had two of his best partners in reserve: Janus and Pinky. Pinky was already out and about, now joined by an Espeon.

As much of a problem as the Gastrodon was for Josh's strategy, he didn't need the Dunsparce making the gravel-covered battleground any harder to navigate. The Eeveelution mount Pokémon had enough trouble as is. "Double QUICK ATTACK! Take out that Dunsparce! he commanded them both.

The tactic should have come as no surprise to the Minor League's Director; after all, Quick Attack was his Gym's signature move. While the Espeon's was an ordinary QUICK ATTACK other than being fueled by teleportation for added surprise factor, the Sylveon's was special. Pinky's feelers whipped through the disturbed airflow, her claws glowing a bright pink with PIXILATEd Fairy energy that added quite the punch to the blindingly nimble move.

The Gastrodon's ice storm hit, blinding both of the quadrupeds in one eye and covering their lower bodies in frost. The two were able to shrug the Ice-type attack off, but its primary purpose seemed not to harm, but to allow the Arcade Director to keep his speed advantage even after the TRICK ROOM faded.

a one-two from the pair of eeveelutions knock the dunsparce out, which is then recalled by kyle promptly.

that's the last of kyle's newer pokemon out. the last three are ones that kyle is confident enough to bring on high stakes missions, trained enough to be considered part of an actual boss battle.

"guess you'd be excited to meet him, then."

kyle whistles. a figure from overhead casts a shadow from below. entei leaps from the opening on the gym's roof, landing on the patch of floor that has been weathered under the harsh sunlight from earlier.

as entei lands, another beep on the screen sounds. another boon to turn the tides to the challenger's favor appears.

challenger gets a one turn stat boost
defense

two moody smeargles baton pass off their boosts from the sidelines. an inconvenient roll against the entei, right after it's arrival, doesn't trouble the leader, however.

"boss battle starts now." kyle crosses his arms. "clear smog. bulldoze."

the gastrodon finds itself in position to fire off the move as the two eeveelutions knocked the dunsparce out. a debilitating fog that aims to cancel out the boosts they got from earlier gets released from its mouth, creeping into the nearest target, with aid from the previous move to make it harder to walk out of it with ease.

friendly fire was a foreseen circumstance, but kyle trusts in his gastrodon's defensive capabilities to withstand it. the floor shakes indiscriminately, breaking the rocks that had been set up earlier in the process. entei destabilizes the footing of every pokemon in the fight, hampering movement on top of the icy wind.

A transparent, glass-like shield suddenly rose around the entire arena as the TRICK ROOM faded away, shielding the battle's audience from the elemental assault that was about to test Josh in a way he never could have expected. He had been told by , , and that if he wanted to pursue the legendary Pokémon Raikou, all roads would lead to .

They did so in a way the Pokémon racer could never have expected.

The arena's temperature surged drastically, the furnace-like conditions of Mount Chimney during his mountain rescue aided by The Volatile coming to mind. From an opening on the rooftop crashed a large, quadrupedal, obviously fire-type Pokémon about as large as Aslan. Volcanic embers radiated from the majestic, noble Pokémon, Pinky and Janus trembling under the PRESSURE of its divine Aura that was nothing short of oppressive. Josh had expected, from his research, that the Champion merely knew where Entei was and was on good enough terms to visit it.

He had no idea that the Director had the Sacred Beast at his beck and call!

Josh's jaw was wide open, not even noticing the roof of his mouth starting to cook from the heat entering his body. As he shed tears of happiness in meeting one of the three divine Pokémon he admired to the point of adoration, they evaporated within seconds. He was overcome with joy, so much that he lost focus on the battle. A roar from the Beast would make Josh fully aware that he still had a challenge going on.

The sonic discharge, magnified by the PRESSURE of the flame emperor's inhuman Aura, swept Josh off his feet and into the arena wall behind him, the challenger landing on his rump. Janus and Pinky, sounding loud and pained cries, stood their ground. At the very least, the wheel was in Josh's favor, two Smeargle on the sidelines BATON PASSing enhanced defensive capabilities to them. Capabilities Kyle's Gastrodon looked to remove from Pinky with a cloud of CLEAR SMOG.

Acting quickly, Janus juxtaposed with the Sylveon with a quick use of ALLY SWITCH, shielding his ally from both the venom Fairy-types loathed while also keeping his bolstered defenses intact. Defenses he would need when Entei reared and slammed his broad, seemingly omnipotent paws into the arena's center, BULLDOZING every piece of Rock Slide debris into deadly shrapnel that went flying in all directions. The Gym's safety system was thankfully able to keep Josh safe from the rocky explosions, but not so much Janus and Pinky. The Espeon had been felled in a single blow, and Pinky was in terrible shape, just barely able to struggle to her feet and attempt to twist the space around Entei with his PSYSHOCK.

While the safety systems were able to keep Josh safe from the shrapnel, the Beast's shockwave was another thing. Its PRESSURE was so great that it breached the system intended to keep challengers safe, a drastically weakened form of Entei's BULLDOZE striking Josh directly just as he was trying to stand up. He fell on his rump a second time, this time cutting both its cheeks on pieces of shrapnel that had escaped in the process. Blood dripped from the legs of his shorts as he recalled his brutally beaten Espeon and sent out his final Pokémon, Saber the Manectric. The electric-type was furious, locking stares with the Legendary Beast.
