The Josh Fight Begins [Gym]

Comfortably at the front of the field, Josh took a look at the race timer in the corner of his Vision. If this was any other scenario, he would have settled with coasting to the finish line and saving Braver from any potential pulled muscles or other trouble that potentially came with the final push of every race. His body had started pounding from the strength behind the Arcanine's powerful gallop. While Arcanine were swift and amazing endurance runners, it took almost superhuman endurance to ride one at high speed for long.
His body was going to hate him for this. If he pushed hard enough, though, he could break his co-worker's course record. He had done so much racing at his own facility, yet he had never held a single course record at his own facility. If he had anything to say about it, that would change today. The Gym Leader slammed both his heels down and dug into his Arcanine's flanks. It was a tactile command Josh rarely used due to the pain it could cause the Pokémon when not properly done.
"Braver, EXTREME SPEED!!" his voice boomed as the world around him became a blur, dashing at the sustained speed of the Johto Beast of his dreams.

Braver let out a loud howl of half determination, half pain as the Gym Leader's heels came down at just the right spot. He, too, let out a loud war cry. It wasn't just about winning the race anymore. It was about setting a new course record using the very fastest Pokémon he had: a course record only another Arcanine rider would realistically be able to challenge. Every stride hurt Josh, too, the racer hissing with almost every time the fire-type's back slammed into his rump. They were pushing each other to their limits, crossing the finish line in first place.
The rest of the field was still in an intense battle for the last four spots. Clyde, too, wanted to make one final push, but he and Mystic were spent, and he was going to get trampled in that narrow strip at the end if he didn't yield. Reluctantly, the Flareon yielded to both the Hisuian Arcanine, watching Mystic the Ninetales cross the finish line in second place.
That left one podium spot for Challenger Dragomir and Buddy to chase. Once they were clear of the narrow path, a war cry from his rider made Buddy, likewise, give it everything he had. Craggro entered a WILD CHARGE to answer the burst of AGILITY his rival had put on. The finish was breathtaking to watch: Craggro had some distance on the RaiCorp executive, but Buddy had more raw speed. With one last howl and push from his trainer, the challenger's Hisuian Arcanine lunged over the finish line. The desperate move was just a tad too late, Craggro barely nosing Buddy out. It would be a hell of a moment to watch on the replay, though.

Hurrah for the Champion - F-ZERO GX OFFICIAL SOUNDTRACK Josh Devlin basked in the glory of his victory and his course record as the award ceremony wrapped up. Josh Dragomir was nowhere to be found on the podium after having just barely lost the duel with the Leader's Hisuian Arcanine. Only once the crowd began to clear out did the younger Josh address the older. "Mauville Gym's racing challenge is one of the toughest in Hoenn, Josh," the Gym Leader said with a frown on his face, as though to be the bearer of bad news. "It tests skills that very few other Gyms in the world test: not just the skills of the trainer, but their athleticism, as well. It's counterintuitive to many less experienced trainers, but riding on a Pokémon can be more strenuous than walking or even running on foot. Especially if you choose a Pokémon such as Arcanine. I hope you're not too sore; Braver wore me out!"After having rambled on a little too long, Josh reached into his right pocket, scooping a small, metallic object into his closed, right fist. "There is one quality you have shown me that I am truly impressed with, and that is your tenacity. Not once did you give up, even when you seemed to be hopelessly behind. And look at you! You wound up less than a tenth of a second from the podium. I don't think the bond between you and your Arcanine can realistically get much closer. I'm really impressed. That bond will see you far in the Pokémon League."With that, the Leader opened his closed fist in front of the more tenured Ranger, revealing his Gym Badge for the taking. "This is the official Hoenn League Quick Badge. You and your Arcanine shall be enshrined in the Gym's list of Qualified Riders as champions." He paused to let his friend and co-worker claim his Badge and let the title sink in. "How about we head over to this Unovan place a few blocks south of here when I break for lunch? We can catch up there." Josh Dragomir ···
