With the number of Pokémon that Little Josh had thanks to his Gym, he was glad that he, too, had a large property in the form of Mauville Racing Grounds. The downside was that his property was tied to his job. If he were to suffer a career-ending injury, which was always a danger in his line of work, where would he keep so many big Pokémon? He would almost certainly need to move out of Mauville. Lavaridge wouldn't be a bad place to move to; it was close enough to the main population centers of Hoenn that a trip to all his favorite places wouldn't be too long.

With there being almost no wind, the desert would be Josh's playground on the way to the village nestled in the foothills of Mount Chimney. He was there to test his older colleague's racing visor, and he needed to get warmed up. Breathing a deep sigh, Josh clutched the reins of his Arcanine mount, Braver. "Alright, use your EXTREME SPEED!"

The Arcanine's legs coalesced into a single blur, Josh's knuckles turning white as the orange-and-black comet dashed across the Great Desert's sands. Landmarks zipped past him at surreal speeds. In his eyes, this burst of speed was on par with what the Beast of Thunder could offer. Whether that was true would be something he would only be able to experience for himself either befriending Raikou himself, or finding out who had done it before him.

Catching a glimpse of a familiar rock formation preceding the entrance to Lavaridge Town, Josh had Braver make a wide turn, made even more gradual by the Arcanine's hampered cornering mid-EXTREME SPEED. It was for the Leader's own health, as well; any sharper of a turn would have wrenched Josh off at blistering speed. That would not have ended well for him.

The older Josh may have been able to catch a glimpse of the Arcanine comet before the two started to slow down. As the two entered the large property, he may have been able to see Resheph EXTREME SPEEDing alongside Braver, with Blinky the Jolteon trailing behind the two quite a bit.

"Daddy, what is it?" answered young Lyra, clinging to her father's leg.

"Hopefully nothing. But just to be safe, I'll call you out if things are fine."

Josh had been expecting for the rider to show up, though he hadn't been expecting a massive series of blurs to come rocketing towards the ranch at high speeds. Offhand, Josh couldn't tell what they were, so he had sent the kids inside in case he needed to defend the ranch. Lightning's ears were perked up, giving Josh an idea of how close they were getting. Reaching up, he brought a hand to his ear and hit the button that would bring out the eyepiece. Pushing a few buttons on the holographic interface, he was able to turn the scanners on and zoom in...

That was when he was able to recognize the person atop one of the Pokemon. It was still a bit of a blurry sight, which meant he would have to do some calibrations to fix that. But at the least, he could tell that the approaching Pokemon were not a threat. Just a very reckless kid. Josh took a deep breath as he turned off the eyepiece, watching as the Gym Leader made his grand entrance. He really did wish the kid didn't toy with his worries like that. Not when they were dealing with Pokemon outbreaks.

With great speed came great responsibility. True to the Mauville Leader's catch phrase, once the gate came into sight, the three swift Pokémon began pumping the metaphorical brakes, no longer looking like comets on the ground but still going at quite the clip passing through the gate to the expansive property owned by the RaiCorp executive. The Jolteon, Arcanine, and Dragonair enjoyed a much more relaxing pace while on site as to not spook the Pokémon there. Braver would sound a greeting bark toward Buddy if the Hisuian Arcanine was present.

Josh took the slower speed as an opportunity to catch his breath. Even the Master of Faster himself was not immune to the effects an Arcanine's supreme sprinting speed had on the human body. If this would be what living his dream was like, it was both exciting and frightening at the same time. "Hi there!" he waved to the older Josh. "From your call, this is about the racing helmet we talked about before, right?" he asked for confirmation, his eyes shifting about the expansive property. It didn't take him too long to spot Lightning and wave at the Raichu in a greeting smile.

The kid and his Pokemon began to pump the breaks once they got close enough to the gates. Josh let out an exasperated sigh as he made the call that the kids could come out now. So when Small Josh arrived, out of the the door of a manor seen in the distance came two children, both looking to be around six. A young boy with black hair, and a young girl with blonde hair.

"Whoooooaaaa!" the kids exclaimed when Little Josh and his entourage came to a stop. Though they were of course referring to the Pokemon, not the rider. Both kids rushed forward like little happy Pichu to try and pet the Arcanine, one shouting "HE'S SO FLUFFY!" as Josh sighed and shook his head.

"Sorry about that" Josh apologized to Little Josh. "Yeah. I've been working on how to make the tech work with different kinds of eyewear and I thought I'd bring you to test it since you've been on my case about it" Josh brought up at that. He would pull out a racing visor, and hand it to him. "Figured we could find a means to give it a test in visor form. I'll turn it into a proper helmet for your special order when the time comes, but I imagine this should suffice for now. I've put a latch on it to hook onto your own helmet if you brought it. Otherwise I have spares. They might be a little big for you, but they'll do."

Braver certainly didn't mind the affection and TLC; with Josh being such a serious, sometimes unintentionally harsh trainer, he wouldn't turn down the opportunity to gently play with Dragomir's children. "This is Braver," he introduced his Arcanine to the Dragomirs, the fire-type sitting down both to let his rider dismount and to not be so imposing to the kids. "You lot have fun, and be careful, okay?" he requested of them before leaving them to their play.

"It's okay," the younger Josh reassured. "Maybe they'll be my fans when they get older!" Whether that was as a Pokémon racer as he wanted to believe, or simply as a Gym Leader, would be up to them. Of course, it was all wishful thinking; they would have lives of their own to live, after all!

And now, down to business. "This is slick," the Gym Leader complimented his friend on RaiCorp's technological marvel. "Can't wait for this to go into production, but I'd be glad to give it a test for you!" And a good one at that; he whisted for Blinky to come to his side, the Jolteon still a little winded from the long run across the desert but recovering fast. Though Braver's EXTREME SPEED was faster in bursts, the Jolteon's sustained speed was quite a bit higher. "Got a spot all picked out to do this field test?" he asked as he hooked the prototype HoloWear into place. It wouldn't be as seamless as his current setup, but that would come in due time.

Today, he was there to test its technological functionality.

Josh smiled slightly as the kids would bury their faces in Braver's fur. Since Small Josh had indicated that the Arcanine was safe, he would respect his judgement. However, an Espurr lurked nearby, watching the kids and Arcanine intently with big, blank eyes that radiated an unflinching intensity.

"Believe it or not, I knew you'd want to take it for a racing spin" Josh revealed when Little Josh asked as to where they would be conducting a field test. Knowing Amblin was nearby, as was his wife and parents so the kids would be more than safe, Josh led the other Josh throughout the large, sprawling ranch. There were... Well, a lot of Pokemon, to say the least. A Pidgeot and Poipole soared over their heads, engaged in a heated race. A Meltan could be seen clinging to the Poipole's head. As they passed the sight of a napping Charizard that Small Josh would recognize, they came to an open field that clearly looked like it had recently been cleared of equipment and Pokemon.

"This should do it. I've ensured the Pokemon are out of the way, but they'll likely be lurking. What I want to test today is to see if you can identify them with your visor while racing. The heat-seeking capabilities should be able to help you see them even behind obstacles, but the further away you are, and the faster you're going. The blurrier the image is. I've done some tweaks and want to see if there's been any improvement. I also need to ensure the visor works as well as the eyepiece."

It was a tough test, but if they were going down, at least they can say they die hard.

The older Josh's smile assured the Gym Leader of their trust, though having a backup plan was always good; after all, even the most well-trained Pokémon weren't truly predictable. They were living creatures, with free will of their own, and that was what made them so amazing! Braver gently played with the excited children, letting out an affectionate growl they would almost certainly be able to feel the rumbling from if they continued to pet him.

At Dragomir's command, Leader Devlin switched racing helmets to the prototype he was to test. It was a vastly improved version of the glasses he had used before, with a lot of adjustable UI elements. He was able to make the speedometer in the lower right corner a little more prominent. While he had an objective to test the device's heat-mapping capabilities and the effectiveness of its distance-measuring equipment, he wanted to see just how fast his Pokémon were, as well. The top speed of a Rapidash was a well-known baseline he used to determine competitive viability for a racing Pokémon. "Got it! Looking forward to helping out!"

He switched to heat-mapping mode after climbing onto Blinky's back, firmly holding the reins as he kept one eye on the reds, yellow, and oranges of his thermal vision, and the other on his speed. "Alright, Blinky, let's go! We've got a lot of ground to cover." The giddy Jolteon reared in anticipation, startling her rider before zooming away from the RaiCorp bigwig in a blur that was already causing the heatmap to lose precision. With the ranch being wide open, Josh had little worry about crashing into anything. The heat-map would pick up any Pokémon that suddenly popped up. He was distracted by watching the numerical display of his speed climb, and fast. Was a Jolteon's acceleration really so violent? Or had all the time he spent as a racer dulled his body to the sensation of strong g-forces?

It may just have been a prototype, but Josh was pretty confident that it would run well. He had spent hours agonizing over it personally, after all. His first major advancement in RaiCorp's tech, that he was to lead a team of his own in development of -- it had to be perfect, he knew. So he had spent many hours in the lab personally building on and testing it. But his own eyes couldn't see everything the same way as everyone else. So Devlin's input did help. Especially when it came to building it into something such as a racing helmet -- that had been extra challenging.

And with that, they were off. Josh took off after his younger counterpart on his own Hisuian Arcanine. As Devlin rocketed off through the ranch, his headset would begin to pick up the heat signatures of many Pokemon at once. At times it began to stutter as it tried to process all of it at once, but Devlin could at least pick up the sight of a Swampert, a Blaziken, a Typhlosion, a Venusaur, an Incineroar, a Haunter, a Tyrunt, a Rowlet, and a Poliwag.

If he looked up in the air, he would catch sight of a Swablu, Salamence, Haunter, and a pair of Aerodactyl gliding through the air. In the waters nearby? Wishiwashi, Primarina, Gyarados, and for some reason a Forretress that was intent on taking a bath in the lake.

The interface would, if Devlin pushed on his headset in the direction of any Pokemon he saw, try to identify them. But it was a lot of Pokemon, and it was bugging a bit at all the information it was trying to process. It did eventually do so, even with all the Pokemon at once, but it was perhaps a little slow.

With the technology being in beta, Josh was not surprised that the identifiers lagged his display. The real-world objects, of course, passed through as they would, but the AR aspects of the racing helmet had an unacceptable amount of lag to them at first, jumping all over his visor as he made turns. Once the bugs were weaned out, it would be an incredibly valuable resource, both as a Ranger and as a Pokémon racer. He already imagined the technology being distributed to racers to enhance their experience, giving visual indicators of how far behind one was, and so forth.

As Josh completed a lap around the ranch, he slowed his Jolteon mount down so that Buddy could keep pace. "This is really slick! The code could use some optimization, though; I wouldn't want to use this for racing, with how laggy the display is. For Ranger work, though, it's a good start!" He whistled at how many signatures the device picked up. "Are all those Pokémon yours? You've got quite the collection yourself!"
