A couple of weeks after the Winter Masquerade, a bouquet found its way to the headquarters of Prescott Industries. Primarily the light purple-blue of hyacinths and complemented by the darker hues of blue salvia, it arrived, enribboned, with a note.[break][break]

Darling Summer,[break][break]

It's been a while since our dance at the museum. Would you be interested in having dinner with me? Le Pavillon Slateport on Saturday the 17th at seven o'clock. Their tasting menu earned them a Michelin star this year.[break][break]

Below his name was his cell phone number.[break][break]

An accompanying card indicated the meanings of the flowers: hyacinths for playfulness, and blue salvia for platonic thoughts that never strayed far from the bouquet's recipient. And of course, a business card had been tucked in behind the other two notes, its face bearing the elegant logo of Fiorelli Floristry.[break][break]

The bouquet made its way to Summer Atreides's desk. Whether she would receive it positively, however, was not something Gunner would know — not unless she reached out to him after or showed up at the restaurant in question.[break][break]

Which was where Gunner waited on the appointed night, dressed in a black sweater and slacks, kept warm by a wool overcoat that fell to his knees. The slightest whiff of cologne clung to him like a ghost, alluring notes of amber and oak. He stood outside the front of the restaurant, watching the street on both sides, keeping an eye out for the telltale blue hair of his date.[break][break]

Underneath his calm exterior, Gunner was on high alert. Prescott Industries was the HBIC's newest target for an investigation into possible ties to Team Rocket. No concrete evidence had come forth yet, so it was up to Gunner to dig deeper and unearth the truth. His angle of approach?[break][break]

When Summer Prescott entered her office after a long meeting from her partners in trade, she wasn't expecting to see flowers waiting at her desk. It took her by surprise as she walked closer, looking over them carefully. She received flowers on many occasions, but she never knew if there was something to poison her or drug her should she come closer.

Paranoia, especially after dealing with her father's former supporters, was still blooming in her chest. She plucked the note along with the flowers with a handkerchief, keeping it away from her hands should it be embedded with poison.

However, after reading it over and looking at the place the flowers had come from, Summer determined that they were safe. In fact, she couldn't help a light smile on her lips as she looked over at the number scrawled below. She made a note to meet Mr. Gunner Graves at the designated time, though she didn't send him a message.

That evening, she came wearing her cream cape, covering her body and shielding her from the cold. Summer carried a handheld purse in one hand, the other sending out the last of an email for that day. She looked up and spotted the man waiting for her.

"Mr. Graves. I didn't expect flowers at my desk the other day. I'm delighted to see you once again," Summer said with a smile, tucking her phone away into the purse.

Mr. Graves. It was such a formal way of addressing him considering their last encounter, but it brought a smile to his lips anyway. After all, they were properly meeting for the first time.[break][break]

"Miss Prescott. Likewise," he said. "You look as lovely tonight as you did when we first met."[break][break]

And she did, possessing the very same air of sophistication and class even though her clothing was drastically different. Instead of a risqué dress that saved little for the imagination, she had covered herself all the way up to the neck, save for a peek at the bare skin of her thighs. The memory of his hands gripping those same thighs flitted through his mind, but he put it away as quickly as it had emerged. There'd be no guarantee of a similar situation that night.[break][break]

"I wasn't sure if you'd come, but I hoped anyway." He gestured toward the front doors of the restaurant. "Shall we?"[break][break]

A rhetorical question, of course. He offered her his arm so they could enter together.

"Thank you. You look dapper as well," she said with a nod of her head.

With his arm outstretched, she looped hers around and allowed him to lead her inside. This wasn't a place she'd been to before, and she'd admit she was eager to try it. They were shown to a table for two, where she allowed him to help her sit and push her chair in as she waited for him to settle.

"I'll admit, I almost didn't expect to hear from you again after the masquerade. I wasn't sure I left such a large impression on you," Summer said with a laugh, taking a glass of wine that was poured for her.

"What brought on your sudden desire to see me again? I'm not disappointed. In fact, I'm glad you reached out to me."

After helping Summer with her chair, Gunner took the seat across from her and nodded a greeting to the waiter who poured them the wine. Then he turned his full attention back to his date.[break][break]

"I wouldn't say it's so sudden, even if it seems that way," he replied. "I enjoyed our time together at the masquerade, even when we were just conversing. I found myself wishing to talk to you again in a quieter setting."[break][break]

While not exactly private, the restaurant possessed a dignity that demanded hushed dialogue. It was a sharp contrast to the loud, raucous chatter that had filled the ballroom during the masquerade. Ever the introvert, Gunner preferred it — and also the chance to have a one-on-one conversation with an interesting woman.[break][break]

"Of course, I didn't know who you were until I was organizing our files at work. Your late father was our client in the past. My curiosity got the better of me since I had only vaguely heard of Prescott Industries, and I saw you'd taken over as CEO. So that's how I figured out who you were."[break][break]

The lie came naturally, as if that had truly been the case. It helped that Prescott Industries had hired an attorney at Wesson & Sons before. All the best falsehoods carried a nugget of truth in them.[break][break]

The waiter returned to explain the three-course tasting menu. There would be two appetizers, two entrées, and an assortment of desserts to sample — diners' choice, of course. Gunner listened attentively before turning to Summer.[break][break]

"Any preference for which items you want to try?" he asked her.

"Just conversing? Don't tell me that's the only thing you enjoyed about our time at the masquerade..."

Summer couldn't help but tease him, a smile crossing her face as she sipped her wine. She nodded, setting it down on the table. "I agree, though. It was an enjoyable night. I suppose it wouldn't hurt getting to know each other as well," she said with a small extension of her hand for emphasis.

"Really? Many people hear my name and quake to the ground. Grovel, if you will. Ask for money and compliment me to the extent of the end of the world. It's rather exhausting. I suppose this is rather refreshing, being unknown."

However, the mention of her deceased father left a bitter taste in her mouth. It sent the image of his body, slumped on the ground after she pulled the trigger. The metallic smell in the air, the sounds of Sam's Pokemon descending upon his body as they both escorted knox prescott out. Finally free, finally safe-

"Of course. I think I recall your company's services coming by before. It's funny, how small the world is sometimes," she said. "I've just taken over as CEO. My father's passing was recent, in the past several months. ARCEUS, bless his soul."

Summer couldn't just show her disdain for her father in front of a stranger. Especially since his company had worked for him. Thankfully, the waiter interrupted them and displayed the menu, explaining the options and how everything would work. She waved her hand.

"Chef's choice," she plainly stated.

"I guess we didn't really do much talking, did we?" Gunner chuckled at her tease. His golden eyes glittered as his friendly smile took on a mischievous quality. Then his gaze fell on her extended hand as it rested on the table.[break][break]

Slowly, casually, he met her hand halfway, his fingers curling around hers and holding them lightly. His thumb ghosted across her knuckles.[break][break]

"It probably helps that our first meeting was a more… intimate circumstance," he said. "When I saw your photo again, I didn't think to myself, 'Oh, she's a powerful CEO. Maybe she'll lend me money.'"[break][break]

He shook his head for emphasis, his eyes meeting hers once more.[break][break]

"Instead, I thought, 'There's that beautiful woman who dared to have a good time with me. Maybe she'd be interested in more of the same.' You know, when we're done talking for a while."[break][break]

Gunner released her hand to take a sip from his wine. He listened respectfully as she mentioned her father's passing, murmuring condolences for her loss. The waiter's interruption was indeed welcome, as Gunner didn't want the conversation to stray too far into serious subject matter on the first date.[break][break]

Once the waiter had left, the blonde man turned back to the woman seated before him. "So what do you like to do when you're not running a company? Any plans for the holidays coming up, for instance?"

"Really? Now that's a shocking statement," Summer said with her brows raised. Though it really did seem like Gunner had no idea that she was related to Merrick Prescott at all.

After all, after their little rendezvous in the museum, she had only given her first name, not her last. She couldn't fault him for not making the connection there.

"Oh? So you're not here just for good relations between your firm my company then?" she teased him, laughing softly into her glass. "If you treat me right tonight, we'll see how things go..."

It was fun to tease him, Summer decided. Her first impression of him had been someone that was stiff, someone who needed to have a good time. Maybe she was wrong. Maybe he knew more than she thought he did.

"I have a New Years party that I'm throwing with many high status individuals. You can say that throwing parties are something I enjoy doing. Not the process of setting it up but actually partying. The drinking and sorts."

It seemed Summer really liked to tease, for which Gunner was grateful. He preferred when the other person was more lighthearted and playful to contrast his more serious demeanor. Of course, he was doing his best to be charming and flirty, but it was easier when a partner could coax it out of him.[break][break]

"I'm up for that challenge," he said, still smiling, eyes still gleaming with intrigue.[break][break]

The first course, appetizers, arrived while Summer answered his question. Arranged on two plates for the couple to share, they were potato blinis topped with golden osetra caviar and lemon crème fraîche; and a fresh salad with chicories, sourdough “friselle,” hazelnut gremolata, king trumpet mushrooms, crispy Brussels sprouts, and black truffle vinaigrette.[break][break]

Gunner picked up a caviar-laden blini, curious about the taste. He'd only had caviar once before in his life during his mission in Kalos.[break][break]

"You did mention before that you often attend parties like the masquerade," he recalled after taking a bite and swallowing. Together with the lemon and the potato, the caviar had an exquisite taste. "I think it suits you. Nowhere is better for someone than where they can thrive."[break][break]

Gunner had never expected it for himself, but that kind of place was the Bureau for him. Not on a hiking trail, not behind a desk doing analysis, but out in the field, dancing with danger.[break][break]

Perhaps it was no surprise he had invited Summer to dinner.

The first part of their meal was served. It was nothing new or strange to Summer. Certainly, it was her first time to taste something in this arrangement, but the style of food was a commonality in her life. But she didn't mind it. At least Gunner Graves chose a nice restaurant in the Upper District rather than some random steak house.[break][break]

She'd experienced one too many times that people not in her class thought mediocre steaks were the greatest thing on the planet. She could laugh in their faces.[break][break]

"It's true. It's a great way to unwind. You don't have anything to think about, nothing weighing you down. It's just your own mind, your drink, and the music. Then it's up to you to have a good time," she spoke after savoring a bite of the appetizer.[break][break]

With a sip of wine, Summer met his gaze again, pondering for a moment before speaking. "Are you interested in coming? To my party, I mean," she said, raising her brow.

"I admit, I'm something of an introvert, so I find social events draining if I attend too many in a short time," Gunner said, wondering if the confession would be a turnoff for a socialite like Summer.[break][break]

The more honest he was with her about his life, however, the more believable his lies would be.[break][break]

"I prefer smaller, quieter gatherings like this. It's more intimate. I feel like I can talk with you and get to know you at our leisure." He paused for a bite of salad, making sure to chew, swallow, and wash it down with more wine before continuing. "I'd love to come to your party, though, if you're inviting me."[break][break]

If Gunner attended, he might be able to ascertain what sort of connections Summer, and by extension Prescott Industries, had with other movers and shakers in the region.[break][break]

After they were finished with the appetizers, their waiter took the plates away, returning a few minutes later with the entrées: grilled sea scallops with green curry roasted cauliflower, pickled biquinho peppers, and 'nduja sabayon for the seafood dish; and halva-crusted duck breast bigarade with charred orange, foie gras-braised endives, and chestnuts.[break][break]

The portions were small enough that Gunner did not worry about the food's richness overwhelming his middle class palate. He had some experience with haute cuisine and knew enough to appreciate it, but most of his dinners were simple, homecooked meals or takeout from the local Kantonese restaurant down the street from his apartment.[break][break]

Gunner and Summer continued to converse in low tones as they ate. He found himself enjoying it immensely, and he did his best to keep her entertained while being as honest about himself as possible. As the second course came to a close, he dabbed at his mouth with a napkin before asking her, "What did you think of the meal?"[break][break]

Naturally, he hoped she enjoyed it, but the rich tended to have particular and expensive tastes.

Summer listened as Gunner admitted that he wasn't the type of person to go to events like this. Or rather, he didn't enjoy them. Introverted was definitely a word she would use for him. It fit him. She opened her mouth to tell him that she wasn't going to have her feelings her if he didn't want to go.[break][break]

But then he agreed to come. It surprised her. However, she didn't let anything betray her feelings on the surface, rather giving him a smile as she nodded.[break][break]

"If you find yourself uncomfortable, you can leave at any time. I don't want you to feel pressured to be there, after all."[break][break]

Their conversing broke to small chatter as more food came out. More wine was poured in appropriate servings — because let's admit, Summer would've just topped her glass at that point since she was savoring it so much. Her eyes flitted upward, taking in his face for a moment before smirking.[break][break]

"I enjoyed it. Thank you. However, I can't help but wonder if you'd want to do something after this?" she questioned, tilting her head to the side to add a touch of innocence to her question.

The final course, dessert, emerged on a single plate: bite-sized samples of mousse, meringue, and chocolate-covered fruit. The waiter also provided two little cups of espresso to cleanse the palate and accompany the treats.[break][break]

Gunner smiled at Summer's question, delighted. Though innocently phrased, he knew better than to assume she had something chaste in mind. He assumed, too, she wouldn't make the offer if she hadn't been satisfied with how he'd treated her that evening. A woman like Summer did not seem the type who liked to spell out everything for a man.[break][break]

"I would love to," he replied, lowering his voice to a more intimate tone as his golden gaze locked with hers. "We could even take the dessert to go and enjoy it in a more private setting."[break][break]

After all, what woman wouldn't want to nibble on decadent chocolate after a satisfying round in the bedroom?

Take it to go, hmm? It seemed like Summer had riled him up, enough for him to think that leaving now was a great idea. She couldn't hide the pleased look on her lips as she nodded, waving down the server again to demand a box to go for their treats and cups for the espresso.[break][break]

No, she wouldn't waste a single drop of dessert, even after being ravaged by Gunner Graves.[break][break]

Their things were packed neatly, and without a further word or question, she stood, immediately walking away. Summer expected him to follow, to keep up the pace, because if they were to do this, she expected him to stay close by.[break][break]

Her loft in the Upper District wasn't far away, a short walk. With a quick few button pushes, they were on their way up. And Gunner barely had a moment to set his things down until she was on him in an instant, grabbing him by the front of his shirt and pressing her mouth to his.
