As he'd promised, Gunner invited her to a festival in Verdanturf Town. From what she'd looked up, there were many of these springing up in various cities, but she didn't really care which they went to. Summer may as well have thrown a dart at a board blindfolded to pick where they wound up.[break][break]

The last time she'd gone to a festival like this, she had met BARNABY FINCH there. It was last year, and she remembered having a huge breakdown. Crying in her friend's arms, having to be pulled aside and comforted. Nothing like the fair he had taken her to later on that year.[break][break]

She only hoped that this one was better.[break][break]

"When was the last time you went to one of these?" she asked.

Gunner had been pleased when Summer agreed to go to a festival with him on the night of the new year, but when she'd mentioned it again some weeks later, indicating she had carved out time in her busy schedule for him, he'd been beyond delighted.[break][break]

He had chosen the festival in Verdanturf instead of a bigger one in Slateport or Mauville for the calmer, more laid-back atmosphere; festivities in the cities tended to be chaotic, with throngs of people pressing in on all sides. Out in the countryside, Gunner and Summer could make their way through the town at a leisurely pace, observing the performances, eating street food, and enjoying the fireworks without hurry.[break][break]

Dressed in a casual, modern outfit — unlike many locals who were dressed in more traditional clothing — Gunner strolled down the main street with Summer at his side. "I try to go every year, but didn't get a chance last January," he admitted. "We were a little too busy at work, and I couldn't find the time."[break][break]

With everything happening lately, between the open rifts at the primal point sites leading to new worlds and the threat of Team Rocket looming ever larger, it was a wonder Gunner had found time to attend a festival this year.[break][break]

"What about you? Do you come to these often?" he asked Summer.

"I don't really come to things like these often. I went to one last year. It was alright."[break][break]

Summer wasn't going to admit that it was a horrible time. The purpose of her coming with him today was to have a fun time and relax. She didn't want him to feel guilty about bringing her out here if she had bad experiences a different time before.[break][break]

"Growing up, I didn't attend festivals or the like unless it was related to business. It was sort of my father's policy, to focus on business rather than have fun," she admitted.

"Hopefully this time will be more than 'all right'," Gunner said, inwardly excited to show Summer a fun time. He unfolded a piece of paper with the festival's schedule printed on it, scanning the text until he found something that sounded interesting. "There are all sorts of dances and musical acts to watch, or games to play."[break][break]

Summer's admission prompted Gunner to gaze at her with sympathy. Though they'd been seeing each other for a little over a month, she had barely mentioned anything about her childhood or family life. In fact, the only thing he knew was the death of her father some months ago.[break][break]

In an attempt to empathize with her, he said, "My parents were pretty strict, too. They wanted my brother and me to be the best at everything — school, sports, hobbies. We used to come to these festivals as a family when we were still little kids, but once Gideon and I were in high school, that stopped."[break][break]

Tilting his head, Gunner turned the conversation back to Summer. "Was your dad the same way with you? What about your mom?"

Summer thought briefly for a moment how exactly she could explain all of this to him without giving away that she was, in fact, in Rocket. And not just anyone in Rocket. No, she was an executive in Rocket. Just below the Rocket Beasts, higher than the grunts. She stared ahead before she spoke.[break][break]

"In a way, I suppose. He was rather strict. When he decided that I was going to take over the company, my childhood was essentially gone. My life was just training to become a CEO. I was given tasks that were difficult for a child to comprehend. Like taxes or confrontation of business issues."[break][break]

The reality was, she handled much more than that at a young age. Enough so that she had become numb to the illegal world.[break][break]

"My mom left when my brother and I were young. We never saw her again. It was just us."

The reality of Summer's childhood was so staggeringly unfamiliar that Gunner could only shake his head, awed by her resilience. He couldn't imagine what it was like to lose a parent — not from illness or a sudden death, but simply because they had left.[break][break]

"I'm sorry. I can't imagine what that must have been like for you, as a kid." He reached out and squeezed her hand. "Just for today, let's try to have fun like kids would, all right?" he suggested, a rare smile of gentle encouragement gracing his lips.[break][break]

Looking ahead, Gunner saw a candy stall selling sugar-coated strawberries on sticks. Tugging on Summer's hand, he pointed toward the stall. "Want some? It'll be my treat."

Normally, Summer would snap, say something snarky or sarcastic. But, she was quiet for once. Thinking over what was said between them. Were they similar, with their upbringing? Or was he trying to relate with her, and he couldn't since he had no way of knowing her connection to Rocket?[break][break]

Summer didn't even remember her mother's face. She remembered the day she found their father's journal and the note he'd written about her assassination. All of her images were burned and destroyed.[break][break]

"It's okay. Nothing we can change about our past, right? We may as well move along." She offered him a smile, or at least the best she could offer.[break][break]

The offer of the sticky, candy-coated strawberries were not passed up. "I'll take one, thank you."

Gunner nodded in agreement. "You're right. The past is what it is, so we can only focus on the future."[break][break]

How hypocritical of him, to say such words knowing he was mired in the past. To pretend that moving on was the best course of action when he himself refused to do it. But he brushed such thoughts aside, along with the beautiful face that haunted his dreams.[break][break]

After buying two sticks of strawberries, Gunner and Summer resumed their walk through Verdanturf Town. Ahead, a dance troupe performed on a raised stage, their steps perfectly timed to the beat of several drums. A large audience gathered in front of the stage to watch them.[break][break]

"I guess you didn't have much time for hobbies growing up, what with your father's expectations," Gunner mused aloud. "Did you have anything you liked to do as a kid, though, when he wasn't looking?"[break][break]

He recalled all the times he and GIDEON GRAVES had snuck out of their house to play in the woods or in the graveyard just outside of their hometown.

Summer snorted, remembering when she and knox prescott would go out and club together. Get drunk, get high, do anything they could to just be free of responsibilities.[break][break]

"My brother and I liked to go clubbing. Call us irresponsible, but it was definitely something we hid from our father. Or, at least, I tried to. He disliked my brother's party addiction, but I would play it off as me trying to reel him in."[break][break]

Summer had a bit more freedom than her poor brother, who was booted out of the house. Made to be hunt down by their father, to be eliminated. He had been seen as a stain.[break][break]

Not anymore. Summer would protect Knox with her life.

So that was where Summer's love of parties originated. No wonder she considered them freeing. For the first time since they'd started their little fling, Gunner felt like he understood her a little better.[break][break]

The thought gave him hope.[break][break]

"You have a brother?" It was Gunner's first time hearing about him, too. "Younger or older? I'm guessing he's younger since you ended up with the responsibility of being your father's successor."[break][break]

Unless, of course, Summer's brother had done something irredeemable in their father's eyes and suffered disownment because of it.

So the late Mr. Prescott had not only been a strict father, but he was a conservative one to boot, if he was so patriarchal that he initially thought only his son could succeed him. How sad for Summer to know she'd been her father's second pick this entire time. Gunner could only imagine the bitterness she might have felt about that choice.[break][break]

After chewing thoughtfully on his strawberry candy for a moment, he decided she might appreciate it if the conversation turned away from her for a time. "I used to sneak out with Gideon when we were kids, too, but we didn't go clubbing. I don't think I've actually ever gone clubbing before, to be honest with you."[break][break]

The thought of him in a nightclub with flashing lights and loud music made him chuckle.[break][break]

"Instead, we'd escape into the mountains outside Fallarbor. We'd go fishing or bird watching — Gideon's hobbies, really — or swimming in the river. Anything to escape our parents' expectations, even for a couple of hours."

Gunner's deeper laugh joined Summer's. "It was. I think we were holding onto the childhood years that were rapidly vanishing. Though, by the time Gideon entered university, we stopped playing in the woods like that. It's been… what, sixteen years?"[break][break]

He shook his head, marveling at how time had managed to escape from his grasp. Since their teen years, both Graves brothers had finished school, Gideon had gotten married and then divorced, and Gunner had signed his life away to the League government.[break][break]

Two young boys playing in the river never would have expected such a turn of events.[break][break]

"I can't imagine you getting dirty in the woods either," Gunner said. Then he grinned. "There's always a first time. Ever gone camping, Summer? We used to do that a lot, too. We'd pitch a tent by the riverside, roast marshmallows for s'mores, and tell ghost stories after sundown."[break][break]

He paused to crunch down on his sugar-coated strawberries, finishing the snack in another two bites. "Glamping would probably suit you better, though. 'Glamorous camping'," he mused aloud.
