It's with a thud she lifted and slammed her foot against the lifted piece of rubble, looking to stomp it back down into the ground. It hurt, feeling the dirt stab into the bottom of her soles, but the pain of their conversation felt worse. Like needles puncturing her skin.

His words forced her to take a step back. Flinching beneath the implication he breathed life to, her voice shriveled down to a low hiss.

It hurt, hearing him lie like this. Sprouting hope where reality should've rested. Cowarding back into the shell of her wrapped arms, Penelope willed herself to turn away, pain blossoming in places not easily hidden.
