Summer decided that with the local school's spring break coming up, perhaps she should take some time off work. Leave everything up to her most trusted sidekicks, bring her laptop for emergency purposes, and get away for a little while.[break][break]

After all, since she took over as CEO of Prescott Industries, she never truly took time off anymore. Her previous missions were easy to sneak time in like that. And it wasn't so much like her father cared.[break][break]

In true spring break fashion, Summer decided to go to the beach. She had one of her homes in Lilycove, and her staff let her know it was prepared for her visit. However, she made sure to reach out to Gunner Graves's company because...[break][break]

Well, for once, she didn't feel like being alone.[break][break]

Much to her pleasure, they agreed to let her take their worker. Summer ensured that she'd cover his expenses and work leave under her own dollar. And she didn't give Gunner the choice not to go when she told him.[break][break]

Finally, relaxation. She settled on the edge of her bed, humming contently as she looked out the window where the ocean met the shore. "It's lovely, isn't it?"

Spring break was not a luxury Gunner had the privilege to enjoy. Unlike his brother GIDEON GRAVES, who worked at a university, Gunner hadn't had a spring break in almost a decade — not since he was studying for his law degree. Instead, work dominated his life, especially with the recent plans revealed to him by Melody Miro.[break][break]

So when Summer Atreides informed him — informed, not invited — that he'd be accompanying her on her own spring break, he was understandably confused. Pleasantly surprised, but confused nonetheless. The fact that she was also covering his expenses and PTO seemed outright ridiculous.[break][break]

But his protests to pay for himself had fallen on deaf ears. Summer really seemed used to getting what she wanted, and who was he to deny her when she was being so generous?[break][break]

That was how he found himself in her — their — beach house bedroom, overlooking the ocean after bringing their luggage upstairs. "It is," he agreed, a soft smile on his lips. "I don't often get the chance to get away to the beach. Thank you again for having me."

Summer turned her head away from the ocean view, instead letting her gaze fall back to his face. She snorted, raising one of her eyebrows at him.[break][break]

"You know, you don't have to be so formal with me at all. I invited you here as my companion to enjoy time with."[break][break]

And the honest truth was, they were far past the point of formalities. Their relationship was an affair of passion. It was beginning to change, but that passion was still there and brewing.[break][break]

"I wanted you to come. I didn't want to be alone," she admitted, standing again from the bed to approach the window. Floor to ceiling, they invited in the warm sun, brightening the room better than any light could.[break][break]

"Besides, don't you think we both need a break from the world?"

Gunner blushed at her gentle admonishment, a sheepish smile curling his lips. "Sorry. Everyone says I'm too serious. I guess formal is my default."[break][break]

He joined Summer at the window, wrapping his arms around her from behind and placing a gentle kiss on her shoulder. "I'll try harder to loosen up, I promise," he offered, hoping that would appease her.[break][break]

A pang of pity filled Gunner at the thought of Summer being all alone in this enormous house. He truly was grateful she'd decided to bring him, so he'd resolved right away that he would do everything in his power to make the week pleasurable — in more ways than one.[break][break]

"You're right, we really do. You've been working nonstop lately, and with all the trials right now, it's a wonder I have enough time to eat and shower before crashing in bed every night."[break][break]

Another soft kiss, this time on the side of her head.[break][break]

"So, what do you want to do first?" he murmured into her hair.

There was familiar warmth behind her, and Summer leaned against his solid frame as he wrapped his arms around her. It was tempting to take him and have a moment of intimacy right then and there. But, there was also so much more to be done.[break][break]

Not to mention she knew they'd have plenty of time for that later. "Don't worry. I'll help you loosen up."[break][break]

It was meant teasingly, but she didn't mind if he took it more than one way. Summer laughed softly, allowing him to press soft kisses against her skin and sigh against him comfortably.[break][break]

"Let's go have a nice lunch on the beach. We can go from there. But I have two rules." Summer turned in his arms to look up at him.[break][break]

"I have my laptop for emergency purposes only. So you may use it. But rule one: no thinking about work. And rule two: no worry about work. Only emergencies permit use," she said giving him a mix of teasing and serious look.

Gunner laughed lightly at Summer's promise to loosen him up. He had no doubt she'd be able to do just that.[break][break]

"Got it. Emergencies only," he repeated. However, the knowledge that her laptop was present in the house sent the gears of his mind turning. Could he dig through it while she was asleep? Maybe while she was having a long and luxurious bath?[break][break]

He'd need to formulate a plan once he understood the routine of their days. In the meantime…[break][break]

"And lunch sounds fantastic." Gunner released Summer and turned to gather whatever things he needed. Sunglasses, phone… He guessed he could leave behind his wallet, though. As for the actual food and drink, he assumed Summer's staff would take care of them.

"Do you want anything specific, or should I let them know to make an array of food?" Summer asked, breaking from his grip to approach the phone on the wall to call down for her waitstaff.[break][break]

"Jacques, my dear. Hello, it's good to speak to you too. Listen, I'd like to have lunch down at the beach with my guest. Please set it up, and let the cooking staff know that we aren't picky. Thank you, mwah, mwah."[break][break]

She hung up the phone, looking back to Gunner with a small giggle.[break][break]

"Jacques been serving my family for as long as I can remember. He's like a father to me. He always doted on me, would sneak me things behind my father's back when he was around. I'm pleased we can see him again this week. Now, shall we get ready?"

Gunner shook his head. "Nothing specific. Request what you like."[break][break]

He idled by the door of the bedroom while Summer made the call to her personal chef. Though it was still very weird to think of other people in such terms, Gunner was beginning to get used to it, at least in the context of Summer's life.[break][break]

"It sounds like I need to meet this Jacques and thank him for always supporting you," Gunner said with a smile, meaning it. "But yeah, let's go."[break][break]

They headed downstairs to exit the house on its beach-facing side. On the way, they collected a large picnic blanket, some cushions for sitting, and a portable Bluetooth speaker for music. Gunner carried it all in a large basket.[break][break]

"Is there anything else you'd like to bring?" he asked Summer.

Gunner's words touched her heart in a way she didn't expect it to. Summer felt her cheeks warm up for a moment, though she tried to hide their redness by appearing busy for a moment or two.[break][break]

What's with him and the sweet compliments? She could kiss him right now, if they weren't busy getting ready to head downstairs.[break][break]

The trek to the sand was a short one, since her home was beachfront. The expanse of sand and the ocean was a private strip she owned, fenced around the sides so no one was allowed to come in. And it gave her privacy as well.[break][break]

"I think this is it. We can settle right here."[break][break]

Her staff was there to set things up, placing their meal on their large blanket and providing wine for them to drink. Summer thanked them, their cue to disappear. She settled on one side, waiting for Gunner to join her.[break][break]

Gunner marveled, not for the first time, how efficiently Summer's staff worked. They didn't let him help at all, so he stood awkwardly nearby as they set up the picnic. Finally, when they finished, he thanked them and settled down on the other side of the magnificent, beautiful spread of food and wine.[break][break]

"This is amazing," he said, selecting some appetizers and gathering them on a small plate. Before he popped one into his mouth, however, he took a moment to appreciate the view before them.[break][break]

"Pristine sands, the ocean without crowds of other beachgoers, a delicious meal," he turned his gaze upon Summer, drinking in the sight of her, "and a beautiful woman to enjoy it all with me."[break][break]

He shook his head, chuckling. "It's not how I imagined spending the week, but I can't think of anything better."

Summer herself took a sip of wine, daintily eating here and there as she listened to Gunner speak. She looked over at him, practically beaming, as he gushed about their vacation that had just started.[break][break]

Then he spoke about her again. And she...[break][break]

Reaching over, despite both of them having eaten something, she reached for his chin, his jaw, and pulled him closer. To kiss him. It was sweet and intimate, fueled by something that was new in her. "I..."[break][break]

What was she going to say? "I love you? I care about you?"[break][break]

The brakes in her mind screeched to a halt as she leaned back just enough to look into his eyes, still in his presence. No, she couldn't say that. Not now, right?[break][break]

When Summer reached for him, Gunner leaned in eagerly to meet her lips with his. Ever since their outing in Petalburg Woods, their kisses carried a different meaning than before. Whereas they used to be charged with lustful passion, lately, they were full of tenderness. Gunner wondered more and more if their relationship had taken a turn toward something else.[break][break]

In fact, when Summer pulled away and gazed deeply into his eyes, Gunner's heart jumped into his throat. The tension between them as she searched for words was palpable.[break][break]

But the words he thought she might say never came. Instead, she simply agreed with his sentiment. Gunner had to believe that was all she felt; it would be foolish to conjure some deeper affection.[break][break]

"Do you do this often?" Gunner asked, turning the conversation back to the picnic to ease any awkwardness on both their parts. "Come to the beach for a meal like this?"

Summer felt their tension and intimacy cease, popping like a balloon when Gunner brought the conversation back to the beach. It deflated her a bit, but it was her fault. Maybe she should have said it.[break][break]

"I used to, when my father was in charge of the company. I don't have a lot of time for myself now, though," she admitted with a gulp of wine.[break][break]

Summer had mentioned her father before, but Gunner still did not know much about the man — at least, from her perspective. Of course, he'd read the newspaper articles about Merrick Prescott's death. They couldn't tell Gunner what Summer's relationship with him was like, however.[break][break]

"You said he was a strict father who wanted you to be his perfect successor. Right?" Gunner asked, just to make sure he had his facts straight. "You mentioned Jacques sneaking you things behind his back. It sounds like he was more of the father you wanted than your real one."[break][break]

Gunner sipped at his wine glass, though when her hand brushed against his, he leaned over and kissed her bare shoulder.
