Summer's words about herself, however, caused Gunner's heart to ache for her. He set down his wine glass and scooped her up in his arms, pulling her onto his lap so she sat with her side pressed against his chest. His hands stroked her hair.[break][break]

"I'm sorry. You didn't deserve that. You deserved a childhood and a loving father."[break][break]

He almost said, You deserve love. But he held back, unsure if it was the right moment to say those words.

Summer's sudden tears surprised Gunner at first, but he quickly recovered, rubbing her back and murmuring soothing words as she cried into his shirt. "It's okay, Summer. Let it out. I got you."[break][break]

And he did, sitting patiently until her sobbing quieted. And even when it did, he continued to hold her. A small smile, understanding mixed with sadness at seeing her so upset, graced his lips when she thanked him.[break][break]

"Anytime, darling," he murmured, tilting her face up so he could wipe the tears from her cheeks with his fingers. "My mom used to say crying is good for getting the poison out. So cry as much as you need, okay? I'm here."

Summer allowed him to tilt her face up and brush away the tears, sniffing like a child. She couldn't help but give a small laugh when he spoke about his mother.[break][break]

"She sounds wise." She wondered what her own mother would have said.[break][break]

Wiping away the rest of her tears, she sat up straighter, though she kept herself planted on his lap. Summer placed her hands on his shoulders, brushing her thumbs over his neck tenderly as she looked at him.[break][break]

"You can do the same, you know? Cry or be vulnerable with me. I trust you... and I hope you trust me too."

Gunner could not help but smile at Summer's offer. "I do trust you," he admitted, even though he hadn't meant to become so enthralled by her. What had started off as a job and a deception had turned into something genuine and meaningful.[break][break]

Suppressing any guilt from surfacing on his face, Gunner lowered his head. "I wasn't always a paralegal, you know. I used to work in data analysis for the League. It's not a glamorous job, but it was good money for someone with my degree."[break][break]

All of this information was public, of course. He wasn't endangering his mission by sharing it with her.[break][break]

"I was stationed in Kanto, actually, in the year leading up to the war." His voice grew quiet. "It was a tense time, especially in the weeks before the takeover. My team wasn't sure we'd make it back home safely."[break][break]

He paused, unsure how to express the tumult of feelings and memories from that time.[break][break]

"I guess I'm bringing it up because it's something about my past I've not shared with you yet, and…" He shrugged. "I want you to know about this part of my life that left a deep impact on me. And not necessarily a good one."

There was a feeling in her chest, like a butterfly trying to escape, when he stated he trusted her. Summer bit the inside of her lip, looking at his features with earnest as he went on to speak.[break][break]

And Kanto was brought up. Summer wasn't ever near Kanto when the war had taken place, but she'd seen footage of it. The wreckage, the destruction. She remember her father talking about it, how Rocket should have done better despite everything that happened. The change of power was a shame, in his eyes.[break][break]

It made a pit of guilt form in her stomach, one she tried to bury as she listened to him. Summer reached up, smoothing her thumbs across his jawline to focus him on her again.[break][break]

"I don't want you to think I'm disregarding that part of your life. I'm proud of you for having served, even though it caused a great stress on you. But you're here now. And I will do anything in my power to make your life one you deserve. I will do anything to make you happy, Gunner."[break][break]

Summer spoke earnestly and truthfully. "If you ever have to wake me up because of Kanto, or it's interfering with your life, I will be there to fight it for you."

I don't deserve this, or you, Gunner wanted to say, but Summer gazed at him with such a deep affection and sincerity that his words died on his tongue. She was such a strong-willed woman that to deny her what she wanted was to do her an injustice. And she clearly wanted him.[break][break]

His heart sang with joy at her declarations. But could he reciprocate? Could he make her happy?[break][break]

It didn't matter, Gunner realized. Instead, all that mattered was that he wanted to try. He wanted to give her everything, including himself.[break][break]

He loved her.[break][break]

"Now it's my turn to thank you," he said, smiling again.[break][break]

He leaned forward and kissed her softly on the lips, savoring the taste of her on his tongue. They sat like that for a moment, tangled up in each other's arms, as he worked up the courage to express himself in words.[break][break]

Finally, when the kiss ended, Gunner only drew back enough to hold her gaze with his. His heart pounded in his ears.[break][break]

Summer allowed him to engulf her, savoring his kiss as she leaned into him. As close as she could humanly get in the setting they were in. She drew her hands over his body, sighing contently into his mouth as they broke away. She looked at him intensely, but nothing could prepare her for what he said next.[break][break]

”I love you.”[break][break]

Did she hear him right? Her ears were buzzing as she stared almost dumbly at him, face turning a hot shade of red as her brain processed what he had just confessed. So, Gunner felt that way… too?[break][break]

Overwhelmed with a surge of emotions, Summer grasped his face and kissed him again. It was fueled with passion and fire like no other before, as she held him close like she would lose him if she let go. But when she broke away, she replied, almost shakily.[break][break]

Summer's reaction was everything Gunner had hoped for and more. He returned her kiss with fervor, clutching at her with an eagerness and desperation he hadn't felt in a long time. And when "I love you" fell from her lips, he could not help the beaming grin that spread across his face.[break][break]

"Have I ever told you how adorable you are?" he murmured with a chuckle.[break][break]

Leaning in again, Gunner brushed his lips against Summer's in a feather-light kiss, tender and sweet. He didn't want to stop kissing her, holding her, touching her. In fact, he wanted nothing more than to whisk her back to the house, up to their bedroom where he could show her just how much he loved her.[break][break]

But his stomach rumbled in protest, interrupting the moment. It seemed they'd have to finish lunch first, at the very least.

Summer sighed against his lips, breathing deeply as he pulled away. What she’d do to spend the rest of her life just like this, sitting in his lap and engulfed in his arms. To bask in the sunlight and never have to worry about a thing besides when his next kiss would be.[break][break]

She shook her head. ”I’m not adorable…” she pouted against him, leaning her head against his chest.[break][break]

The rumbling of his stomach stopped her from proceeding further. She laughed before she sliding off of him. ”Let’s finish eating.”[break][break]

The food and drink was delicious. But once it was time to go in, the game was on. Summer was all purely innocent and angelic until they reached the bedroom, closing the door quietly. The second it was shut, however, she practically lunged at Gunner, grabbing him by the shirt and pulling him to her. While still romantic and passionate, her kisses were hungry and filled with desire.

Gunner knew exactly what to expect once the bedroom door closed. He let Summer pull him down for a kiss, matching her hunger with his own. His hands roamed across her body, wanting to caress every inch of her bare skin. While they kissed, he pulled up the skirts of her dress until they were up near her hips.[break][break]

Then, without warning, Gunner picked up Summer by her ass, cradling her body against his in such a way that she'd have to wrap her legs around his waist. He carried her that way to the bed.[break][break]

Once he reached it, he threw her onto the mattress, barely giving her time to recover before he hooked his fingers into her underwear and yanked it down her long, slender legs.[break][break]

Discarding the thin cloth onto the floor, Gunner knelt between Summer's legs and began kissing his way up the inside of one thigh.[break][break]

"Lie back and relax, darling," he said, his voice low and thick with want. Another kiss, this time with teeth. "I want to love on you for a little bit."

Summer was pleased at his advances, raking her hands down his body to dive under his shirt. His skin was soft, yet she could feel his muscles with each movement of his body as he gripped her skirts. Her breath was hitched as there was cool air to brush her skin.[break][break]

That hitch turned into an excited laugh, wrapping her legs around his waist as he gripped her tightly. She spared no kisses to his lips as they blindly went their way to the bed.[break][break]

In fact, she was nearly breathless as she felt her back hit the mattress, looking up at him with the most wanting gaze. Summer’s teeth snagged her lip as she reached for her pillow, propping herself up to see him settle between her thighs.[break][break]

”Mmph… please, Gunner.” His name flowed perfectly from her tongue as her fingers tangled in his hair gently, brushing the strands from his face.

Summer's fingers in his hair urged Gunner forward to make promises with his tongue. He coaxed a song from her lips, his hands pinning her hips down in case she struggled too much against him.[break][break]

When he felt she'd been thoroughly caressed, Gunner lifted his head and drew away. He scooted out of his clothes, shedding them onto the floor. Within moments, he returned to the bed, drawing up next to Summer to kiss her on the mouth.[break][break]

"How do you want me?" he asked, barely able to hold himself back from simply having his way with her. But he wanted her to feel special and adored. He wanted to show her how much she meant to him.

If Summer was broken, Gunner was putting her back together, mending the pieces just by touching her. She sang for him, just as he wanted her to, held down by his hands.[break][break]

There was a moment of longing when he left, even if only for a brief moment, but she was given the display of him shedding his clothing. Summer sat up to pull off her own, pulling him over her as he kissed her.[break][break]

”I could have you any way in the world and be satisfied,” she murmured against his lips. However, she wrapped her legs around his torso, pulling him close.[break][break]

”Like this. Close to me. I don’t want to stop looking at you.”
