When Tempest Quinn put out the message on Team Rocket's encrypted channels that he was looking for volunteers to examine the four seals in the Border, Zev did not respond at first. Between his work for S.P.E.C.T.R.A., investigating the whereabouts of Palkia and Dialga, and running his bar in Slateport City, he was a busy man.[break][break]

However, it later occurred to him that getting to know the husband of his long-time ally Cillian Quinn was not a bad idea. Of all the members of Team Rocket in Hoenn, Zev knew Gavin the longest. The Beast wondered if Temp could be of use to him, as Gavin was.[break][break]

The two men traveled to the campsite he, Lulu Flint, Elisabeth Fiorelli, and Naomi Sato had erected near the massive, red-leafed jubboko tree. Much of the equipment there was still usable, including the four pitched tents. Zev didn't know how long he and Temp would be staying in the Border, but they'd brought enough supplies to last a few hours, at least.[break][break]

A chill breeze swept through the hills, raising goosebumps on Zev's skin. He hated the feeling. Turning away from the windswept clouds, he removed a Pokéball from his belt. "I'll establish a perimeter around here while you do whatever you need," he said to Temp.

While Temp had not gotten a chance to talk with Zev Harcourt one on one he had heard of him. It was little whispers; Temp wasn't one for gossip. But how did you ignore the presence of a Beast? His own tangling with Cillian Quinn meant he saw a few things, on occasion, he shouldn't. Temp was loyal to Gavin, to Rocket, and so they never parted his lips. He just carefully looked away and put any information not for his eyes out of mind.[break][break]

It was surprising that someone like Zev would bother with Temp and his chasing of ghosts. Yet he was grateful nonetheless.[break][break]

The trip out here had been relatively peaceful, all things considered. The base camp was sturdy but Temp wasn't sure how long it would last; the shifting geography made everything unpredictable. Best to use it while they could.[break][break]

A body cam was in place, a camera in hands. Temp started out by taking a few pictures of the area and for the Seal from a distance. It was large and imposing, much like the one on the Cliffside.[break][break]

Zev released a few Pokémon to watch their backs as they worked. His Gengar, Nidoking, Infernape, and Noctowl emerged in flashes of light. After giving them orders, they fanned out, with Noctowl taking wing to survey the area from above.[break][break]

Then Zev rejoined Temp, remaining some distance from the other man so Temp could work uninterrupted. Zev's eyes scanned the surrounding hills, wary, watchful.[break][break]

"Has the science department figured out the nature of the seals yet?" the Beast asked, assuming Temp was part of that wing of their organization. "The last time I was here, Underbosses Flint and Fiorelli, and Dr. Sato, all speculated its purpose but hadn't reached any conclusions."

The camera clicked as Temp worked. He was quiet as he listened to Zev Harcourt, both focusing on the task at hand as well how to respond to the other. His efforts weren't really a secret, something he would gladly share with Rocket at large. It was mostly just a choice on what the other might find the most useful info.[break][break]

"I've been looking into it with Naomi Sato; we think it might be a language." Lowering the camera, Temp stepped towards the Seal itself. He didn't step deep, but he did stick close enough to examine the area just inside of it. Darkness prevailed but it had the scent of damp and rotting leaves hidden under the smell of stone and dust.[break][break]

Touching the insides of the Seal, Temp hummed to himself before speaking again.[break][break]

"We examined the Seal by the Cliffside together a few days ago. I noticed that one had what looked like claw marks on the inside, like an animal trying to get out. This one doesn't have that." How odd.

A language? Zev stepped closer like Temp did, peering at the symbols along the broken seal with a new perspective. Yet they did not look like any language he knew, whether he could read their alphabets or not.[break][break]

"This doesn't look like any language from our world."[break][break]

When Temp touched the inside of the seal, Zev tensed, expecting the worst — the activation of a trap, or the sudden rush of a deadly Pokémon from within the dark hole beyond the seal. But nothing happened.[break][break]

"Could whatever was inside have flown out? Or slithered?" Zev offered. Taking a heavy duty flashlight out of his pack, he clicked it on and shone the high intensity beam down into the darkness.[break][break]

Perhaps they could spot some remnant of the previous occupant, like feathers or scales.

"You know, that makes sense." Temp was already turning the suggestion around in his mind. Mulling over it. One of his greatest curiosities was why the Seals were even here... but if they had held something inside? Well, that was the most obvious thing, wasn't it?[break][break]

But this place was so hard to navigate. It was so deadly and strange. Even amongst other Rockets it had been hard to pin down what was real and fake unless you experienced it yourself.[break][break]

Inside was a blank space. Dark and rotted. It smelled like decay wafted from inside, making Temp wrinkle his nose. There was little more than rock to the visible eye... for now. But oddly enough,[break][break]

"It's... smooth?" Taking a tentative step inside, Temp had to pause when a sudden wave of bitterness washed over him. It made him feel ill. It was like when he had felt the irrational anger the first time he was here.[break][break]

But he choked the feeling down and lifted his camera.[break][break]

"The walls and floors are like... it's like it's been polished down in here.".

The same strange feeling overcame Zev as he joined Temp within the dark, enclosed space — an unexplainable bitterness, like someone had wronged him. Anger flared within Zev, an automatic response, but he gritted his teeth against it.[break][break]

This realm beyond Mt. Pyre's rift was full of deception. What he was feeling wasn't real. There was no one present, human or Pokémon, that had earned his grudge against them.[break][break]

Zev forced himself to focus on the stone. Reaching out a hand, he gently dragged his fingertips against the nearest wall. As Temp said, the surface possessed an unnatural smoothness that defied the nature of rock.[break][break]

"Water might have done this, or another liquid. Blood, maybe." After all, they were within the base of a giant tree that drew sustenance from corpses.[break][break]

Zev withdrew his fingers. Nothing but dust and dirt coated the tips.

"Enough blood to do this would have killed the tree." Blood was mostly salt. No tree could survive being doused in this much salt water, magical realm of ghosts and magic or not.[break][break]

That did draw other questions to mind.[break][break]

"It's also not stained the right colors for dried blood." Questions might be begged on how he knew any of this.[break][break]

It didn't rule out water. But just water seemed too normal for something as odd as this. [break][break]

Temp took out a small, silver pocket knife from his pocket and a small glass vial. A few scrapes to get small chucks of rock and dust into the vial. A sample for the lab later.[break][break]

A wave of queasiness churned in Temp's stomach.[break][break]

"... we should probably go soon." Temp had promised to be careful.

Zev was at a loss for what else could have caused the tunnel's smoothness, but Temp was already collecting samples for later analysis, so the Beast remained silent as he watched.[break][break]

"I agree. The longer we're out here, the greater the chance we'll attract hostile Pokémon or spirits," he said before turning toward the exit. He emerged from behind the broken seal to find his own Pokémon all standing guard, as expected.[break][break]

An ominous wind blew through the area, causing the dry branches of the enormous tree to rattle like death.[break][break]

"I imagine I'll be reading a report later with your findings?" Zev asked Temp as the other man joined him outside the seal.
