Eva wasn’t expecting Gunner to open up to such a degree. She imagined there were very personal reasons that built the base for his inquiry and desire for answers that her publication couldn’t answer. Eva desperately wished she had more answers and more comfort she could provide him. Unfortunately, this cruel world robbed them both of such peace.

Her soft features turned grim as he explained his story. It was all too familiar: love, loss, regret, a need for closure. She wasn’t surprised it held similar milestones to her own and the stories of too many Kanto survivors, “I’m so sorry for your loss, Gunner,” which is probably not what he wanted to hear. The pain he felt was clear as day in his words and etched within the dark lines of his face, but in the end her deserved the truth like they all did. So, she would tell him.

“The way things are right now,” she pauses for a moment, contemplating her next words, “I sadly don’t see that happening anytime soon,” her shoulders drop in a sense of defeat, “Things are too . . . volatile there. A resistance is still present, but it is small and only a smoldering flame. But that flame can also be fanned into something great if given the right fuel. Then, and only then, will there be a free Kanto,” she fanned that flame a little white she was there. It was enough to spur some unrest, but fire did not appear to be catching.

None of the words Eva shared were what Gunner wanted to hear. He swallowed his bitterness and nodded in understanding. "I see."[break][break]

As much as he wished to dig into the Kanto Resistance during his free time, he barely had any of that. Between his duties with the HBIC and his cover at the law firm, he was stretched too thinly. And the Hoenn government was in no position to provide aid to a foreign region.[break][break]

"Thank you for your time, Dr. Morales," Gunner said, rising to his feet. He had occupied too much of Eva's time. "I appreciate having a chance to chat with you like this. If you hear anything more from the resistance in Kanto, will you let me know?"[break][break]

It was worth asking, he thought.

It was hard to see the pain etched across his face, but in some sick and twisted way, Eva was glad to know she wasn’t alone still mourning over events that transpired years ago.

“I’m sorry Gunner,” Sorry she couldn’t tell him what he wanted, “But I’m free to chat any time,” she confirmed with a gentle smile as he rose to leave. Her head tilts at his next inquiry. It really wasn’t her place to recruit for support for the resistance, but she would remember his compassion when they time came to solidify allies. She simply nodded, but offered something else that might help him find peace, “You know, if there’s anyone in particular you’d like me to ask about . . . I know people who could help,” All she needed was a name and a hometown and perhaps a date of death. Someone would be able to at least find a grave if it existed. Eva pushed a small piece of scrap paper and a pen towards Gunner, “I’ll burn it afterwards,” she assured him, leaving the decision in his hands. Perhaps she could help him find some sense of closure and peace.

The tension in Gunner's face eased somewhat at Eva's offer to chat anytime. He had not expected how much comfort it had brought him to talk about Kanto with someone familiar with the situation.[break][break]

"Thank you. But hopefully the next time we chat, it won't be about such sad matters," he said, attempting a hopeful smile.[break][break]

Gunner turned to leave, but then Eva spoke again. His eyebrows rose into his forehead at her offer. "If it's not too much trouble," he said with some reluctance, not wishing to burden her or her contacts. Still, he took up a pen from her desk and scribbled down the information.[break][break]

Eva offers Gunner a hopeful smile and she leans forward to drag the paper back across the desk ot her. It’s tucked away safely in her pocket to remain on her person until relayed to her contact in Kanto, “It’s no trouble at all,” she assured Gunner. She sends him on his way with a grateful nod and one final statement to contemplate, “The worst thing we could do for those we’ve lost is forget. Silence breeds contempt which smothers hope. Without hope there is no chance at a brighter future - So don’t lose hope, Gunner.”
