It burned with the bright red, orange, and yellow flames of Team Flare -- which had overrun the city and the region in waves of grunts, their aggression putting the recent efforts of Team Rocket to shame.[break][break]

That was why they weren't Rocket. They were better.[break][break]

Elisabeth inhaled the smoke of her cigarette, blowing it out the open window as she watched the capital of Hoenn turn ablaze, a self-satisfied smile curling at her lips. That is, until a sharp cough interrupted her silent gloating.[break][break]

"How did she manage to work in this room," she sputtered out, breathing in yet another unwanted Stoutland hair that she wiped away with the back of her hand. "Ugh. We'll need to set up elsewhere. Is your brother's office any cleaner? He seems the type."[break][break]

Beside her was her partner in crime, MATIAS SILPH.[break][break]

The co-founder of Team Flare.[break][break]

The loathed supreme traitor of Hoenn.[break][break]

PENELOPE LIVY had supposedly been especially feisty. Imagining the former councilwoman rotting in the very prison that used to house Rockets gave Elisabeth a sick, sadistic pleasure.[break][break]

She approached Matias then, drawing intimately close. A hand ran through his hair as she asked, "How did you convince kyle lopez to betray the League, anyway? That was a pleasant surprise."[break][break]

She rewarded her loyal minion for his cunning with behavior that thoroughly desecrated the sanctity of Dahlia Goode's former office. If it had not been immaculate before, it surely was not now.[break][break]

Efficient as ever, Elisabeth adjusted her clothing in the aftermath, smoothing out her hair nonchalantly as they returned to actual Team Flare business.[break][break]

"I believe the Andersons have left Hoenn as well. Councilwoman Elinor Anderson was quite amenable to working with us once her family's safety was procured."[break][break]

Elisabeth had convinced the capitalist that it was far more cost-effective to run Hoenn on less bureaucratic staff. Imprisoning them was much cheaper than paying their salaries. Who was Elinor to say no to a thriving Hoenn economy? War was good for business, after all -- assuming you picked the winning side.[break][break]

"Was there a prisoner you wanted to see in particular?" she asked then, extending a hand for him to lead her onward. "The surly redhead, perhaps, or the insufferably 'good' Miss Goode... Or did you have someone else in mind?"

They passed some of their operatives as they did so, nodding to DEREK HOFFMAN and CIAN MAHER, who had likewise defected for the glory of Team Flare. The former had been promised a funded trip to a mysterious ruin, accompanied by armed and skilled mercenaries; the latter had merely been told that PENELOPE LIVY would be imprisoned, and that seemed to be enough.[break][break]

"Any reason you want to start with Livy?" she commented at length, searching his face for an explanation. "Is she of particular interest to you these days?"[break][break]

An odd spike of ENVY filled her, for reasons Elisabeth couldn't explain. Strange.[break][break]

"She's not of high enough threat to be a significant concern. Amusing to taunt, though, I'll grant you."[break][break]

To her mind, PENELOPE LIVY was a one-time foe subdued at last, squished like a Spinarak beneath her heel. A love rival, though? It depended on how much her loyal companion had seen fit to tell her.

In the blanketing shadows of the singular cell block, there was no telling how many hours crawled by, or how many days separated herself from the proud woman they had first thrown behind those cold, thick bars.

Sometimes, when the hallways whispered reminders of her absolute solitude, she'd take the opportunity to peek through the window of temptation between each bar. She would press her cheeks against its metal, letting the cold bite her tightening skin, all while craning to steal a glimpse of the world they had robbed from her.

But, no matter how many lashes she received, or how many months went by without the faintest touch of another's voice, hope still thrummed inside her. Hot and passionate, it remained alive in her heart, never to be forgotten for as long as she lived.

At least ollie morales and aaron faust are safe, she would remind herself with the faintest curl of a smile.

They carried her faith, her hope, her everything. They were the beacon to which she sent her prayers. That is, at least, until he showed up at her door.
