had she not been as lithe, or as flexible as she was, chances are the cat would have trampled her. luckily, this wasn't the case. still, watching the stain her scales with dirt as she rolls has her training wincing. nevertheless she pushes herself to a feet, the ghost of a wolf's smile on her sharp maw.

"let's see if you can keep that speed up without tiring!" the goading clap of small claws calls for an ENCORE, and the lizard actually prepares this time against the on-coming assault.

The purpose of the QUICK ATTACK was to close the gap and follow up with a much more powerful attack that Josh felt would certainly leave the Salazzle unable to stand. While many of the fastest predators in the world used surprise to their advantage, the way the Mauville Leader trained his team was different. His team was specialized in speed. Perhaps overspecialized. Sure, his Pokémon lacked the need for stealth, being fast enough to chase down any prey, but they were also quick to wear themselves out. Josh had very few Pokémon that were swift yet could still fight a longer battle. Nitro, his Gogoat, came to mind as one of those exceptions.

Josh knew from racing that chains of the speed-boosting move were the way to move fastest through the course, but they also sapped his mount's stamina quickly. With Raikiri goaded into charging back and forth across the lizard like a jousting knight, the venom burning his four limbs from within, it was only a matter of time. The Gym Leader wasn't giving up, though. If anyone knew about pushing his Pokémon to their limits at the very end of a trial, it was him. He had to do it every single time he got on his Pokémon and raced. Even if the Salazzle knew the wildly fast attacks were coming, it still took exquisite timing to evade them. That was Josh's best bet to achieving victory in this battle.

[attr="class","char-words"]each strike carried the force of momentum, thundering against the pale white scales of the lizard. she keeps as close as she can — relying heavily on their close-distance to keep from suffering the more powerful blows.

each beat of zeroara's quickening heart spreads the poison faster, and deeper. content to let time win this battle for her, salazzle releases a point-black plume of POISONOUS GAS. it wouldn't compound the already poisoned zeroara, but it would offer a moment of distraction to become a more difficult target to strike.

delay tactics suited her fine — time was on her side, after all.

Speedy attacks were an effective form of battle, but they also took a lot of energy out of their user. It was energy that Raikiri could not afford to expend. Still goaded from the Salazzle's ENCORE, the exhausted Zeraora lunged into the poison-type with yet another QUICK ATTACK. Hit or miss, the powerful electric-type would succumb to the venom afterward.

Letting out a sigh, Josh recalled his Pokémon. "That was a close one, Greyson! It seems like I'm going to need to do more research. If I can't even take down a former Gym Leader with a Pokémon like Raikiri, how will I pass the Champion Assessment?"

"the champion assessment should be a perk - not a goal. our job is to the people and wildlife of hoenn first and foremost. train yourself not just to survive, but to thrive. train yourself, and your team, to adapt to whatever threats that may exist out there. do that and the champion assessment will be a joke.

Little did the Master of Faster know just how well Greyson Connors ' words would serve him when they would, in the future, meet as part of his Champion Assessment. The young racer's strategy was true to his name: just throw darts as fast as he could and see what stuck. While that worked on Gym challengers, the best trainers in the world had eyes trained to see through that kind of speed.

Greyson's point was accurate and damning. Ride Pokémon, by their very nature, mostly excelled at speed. There were a few exceptions, though. "I have a Gogoat that's still plenty fast but can fight longer battles. Of course, Nitro would have been equally badly matched against your Salazzle. Admittedly, ENCORE is a tactic I haven't had too much exposure to as a Gym Leader."

Cillian Quinn had already proven Greyson's point to him. He did need to diversify his strategy. "Perhaps a riding buddy instead of a ride Pokémon. Something like a Lucario, riding alongside me on another one of my Pokémon..." It was tempting to consider. Knowing how to use EXTREME SPEED, the fighting-type was no stranger to high speed combat.

The more of Greyson's wisdom Josh absorbed, the more he realized he had a long way to go if he wanted to truly make a name for himself in the region. "And that is what I do as a Ranger. I go out into the wilds of Hoenn and use my Pokémon to save lives. All my ride Pokémon are perfect for it. Sometimes I wonder which is my true calling: Gym Leader or Ranger. I enjoy them both so much that I just can't give one of them up. But the Champion Assessment as a byproduct of growth, rather than a benchmark to work toward... that's one way of putting it, and one way I've never thought about before."

it was getting late and he owed annalise henderson a date-night. he turns to look at the man in-front of him one final time.

all around him bursts of light announce the arrival of comfeys. they slowly begin to latch around his arms and he extends them out to make the process easier.

"as for me though, i've got to go. and as cool as riding pokemon is, the inverse is even more fabulous!"
